Ted 35
Construction worker
Each day at work is more or less the same—tiring! When I get back home, there’s nothing more satisfying than a big meat dinner: I’ve always been a big meat eater and in this house, no family meal is complete without meat. I still don’t think that anything can beat my mum’s homemade sausages, though.
Max 19
College student
There are five of us living in our shared student house. My mum says I need to have three healthy meals a day, but I’m too busy studying and meeting friends! We don’t really buy fresh food, and I suppose the fridge could be kind of cleaner... I daren’t let my mum see this photo!
Mike 49
Cook
With five children, we’re one big family! My wife and I both work full-time, so life can get pretty busy! Like lots of cooks I know, I don’t really do much cooking at home. Sometimes I bring home food from the restaurant where I work. Once a week, we do a big shop and buy a lot of frozen food. I know we should eat more fresh fruit and vegetables, but ready meals are so convenient.
Ellie 31
Junior doctor
I don’t cook very often. My fridge is usually half empty and I’m often too tired to eat much anyway. I often end up saving part of my meal for the next day. Some evenings, I’ll just have something quick, like bread, fruits, or even just a yogurt with honey. As a doctor, I know I had better change the way I eat, but I just don’t have the time or the energy right now.

Poppy stood in front of her bedroom mirror, carefully trying on her new blue dress. It was really perfect. “Mom! Have you seen my black dress?”
Her mother appeared in the doorway, “My goodness, you look lovely! But why are you dressed up today?”
“Tomorrow is school picture day. The photos will go in the yearbook forever! I want to make sure everything is perfect.”
Her mom smiled. “You already do, sweetheart. Just be careful with that fruit punch until you change out of your new dress.”
As Poppy reached for it, she knocked over the glass and the punch fell down on her dress.
“Oh, no! Now I can’t wear this tomorrow!” “Don’t worry,” her mom said calmly. “We’ll wash it tonight. Now come on, let’s go to your eye check.”
At Dr. Chen’s office, Dr. Chen smiled. “Let’s pick out the glasses you like.” Poppy’s eyes widened. “Do I have to? But my picture won’t be perfect!” “I’m afraid so. It will be nice to read the blackboard more clearly.” Her mother replied.
The next morning, disaster struck again. “Mom! My dress got smaller in the wash!” Her mom sighed. “Wear your yellow dress instead.” “But I hate yellow!”
Nothing was going right!
At school, waiting with the other classes, Poppy kept playing with her glasses. She hoped her class’s turn would never come. Nearby, classmates were sharing their own worries.
“I hate my new haircut,” Raul muttered, patting his short hair.
Lei grinned, showing missing teeth. “Try smiling like this!”
Poppy noticed Rosa’s bandaged nose and Evan’s broken arm. “I guess we all have things we don’t like about our looks.” Poppy said.
When the photographer called them, Poppy found herself placed front and center. She was starting to remove her glasses, but the photographer stopped her. “Nice glasses! They make you look smart.”
Poppy thought about how each of them had problems for picture day. They couldn’t take off a bad haircut or hide a broken arm. We’re all different. She thought. Maybe that’s what makes us special. She decided to wear her glasses for the picture.
“Cheese!” the class called out.
Poppy smiled her brightest. Picture day hadn’t gone the way she had planned. ________
The flash went off as the photographer snapped the picture. “Perfect!” she cried.

In South Korea, families must pay for the food they throw away. This simple rule has reduced household waste by 30% in just five years. Every year, 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted while 800 million people suffer from hunger.
The journey of wasted food begins long before it reaches our plates. Studies by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization show that in developing countries, farmers don’t have proper storage or transportation, so 40% of food is lost after harvest. In India, nearly 20% of fruits and vegetables go bad before reaching markets. In wealthy countries, like the U.S., where over 40% of the waste happens in shops and homes, nearly 20% vegetables never leave farms just because they look “ugly”. At home, U.S. families waste $1,500 worth or food every year because they misunderstand “best before” dates.
The environmental damage (损害) that food waste causes is amazing. Rotting food in landfills produces methane, a greenhouse gas which is 25 times more powerful than CO2. If food waste were a country, it would create more pollution than other nations. The water used to grow wasted food could fill Lake Geneva three times. Deforestation also connected to wasteful food systems.
Food waste costs the global economy $1 trillion every year. U.S. families could save $1,800 per year by reducing waste, while UK supermarkets lose £250 million on unsold bread. During the period that the disease spread a few years ago, when schools and restaurants closed, U.S. dairy farmers threw away 3.7 million gallons of milk daily.
Action are being taken around the world. France has become the first country to prevent supermarkets throwing away edible food, requiring them to donate it instead. Denmark started public education campaigns in 2010 and has cut national waste by 25%. And apps like Olio which encourage neighbours to share surplus food are proving helpful.
Small steps at home can help as well. Storing food properly like separating apples can keep food fresh longer. Understanding “best before” dates means quality rather than safety, could prevent 20% of household waste. California schools, which introduced “share tables” for uneaten food, reduced cafeteria waste by 30%.
As scientist Dr. Jane Smith warns, “Reducing food waste is one of the most effective ways to fight climate change that anyone can take part in.” By planning meals, buying “ugly” food, and storing food properly, everyone can help create a future where food should feed people instead of being thrown away.
34. Why does the article talk about South Korea’s rule?
A. To show Asian countries have stricter laws. B. To explain how this rule makes much money.
C. To prove that small new rules can work well. D. To discuss why the rule is popular worldwide.
35. What can we learn about food waste?
A. Indian farmers lose most fruits because of bad weather.
B. U.S. farms waste almost 20% vegetables for ugly looks.
C. California schools teach special lessons to cut food waste.
D. UK supermarkets are fined for throwing away unsold bread.
36. What do the last three paragraphs mainly talk about?
A. Using apps to share uneaten food. B. How scientists remind us of healthy eating.
C. Creating plans for a greener future. D. How different groups can fight food waste.
37. The following sentence can be best put at the end of ________.
This shocking imbalance harms the planet, economies, and people in need, but this can be fixed through collective effort, as research shows.

Every morning in Beijing’s parks, you can see groups of people moving slowly like flowing water. They are practising Tai chi. Tai chi is deeply based on the Chinese Philosophy of yin and yang. Chinese people invented tai chi to keep the balance of yin and yang in the body through opposite movements.
As a saying goes, “Water is the softest substance in the world, yet it can penetrate the hardest rock.” Tai chi shows us soft things can be stronger than hard things. Scientists have found people who do Tai chi regularly (定期地) not only feel less stressed, but also sleep better at night, A recent study showed older adults who practised for six months improved them balance by nearly one-third, which helped prevent falls.
But some young people today think tai chi is too slow for their fast lives. They prefer exercises that make their hearts beat fast, like basketball or dancing. As a wise teacher in Shanghai explained, “We should make old traditions useful for today’s world rather than keep them like treasures in a box.” So some creative teachers now mix traditional tai chi moves with modern music, which attracts many young people who want to try something different.
What’s amazing is tai chi has become popular all over the world. Whether in busy cities like New York or quiet towns in Europe, people are discovering sometimes moving slowly can help them solve problems faster. An experienced tai chi master put it simply, “Don’t waste energy fighting walls. Look for the door that’s already open.” This ancient exercise reminds us patience and smart thinking often work better than rushing things. That’s why more and more schools are teaching tai chi.

As Poppy reached for it she knocked over the glass and the punch fell down on her dress.
“Oh no!

【答案】例文:
Dear Tom,
I’m glad you will come to Wuxi soon. Here is a plan for us.
On the first day, we’ll visit Huishan Ancient Town. We’ll walk on stone streets, watch clay figurine making, and taste “qishibao” rice cake to feel local history. On the second day, we’ll go boating on Taihu Lake and enjoy its beautiful natural scenery. In the afternoon, we’ll visit Lingshan Grand Buddha and climb for good luck. On the third day, we’ll explore Nanchan Temple Street, where we can try Chinese calligraphy or drink Biluochun tea in old shops. In the evening, we’ll watch Wuxi Opera to enjoy its beautiful costumes and soft songs.
This plan mixes history, nature, and art, just like Wuxi itself. I hope you’ll love every part of it!
I’m looking forward to your coming.
Yours truly,
Li Hua
