I was 11 when I asked my mum for piano lessons. As we were in an economic crisis, she said
a polite "no”.
That didn't discourage me.I drew a keyboard onto a piece of paper and stuck it on my desk.I
would1 notes on an online keyboard and "play"them back on my paper one-keeping
the sound they made on the computer in my head.I spent six months playing withouta
real piano. As my mum found I was serious about it,she bought me 10 lessons with borrowed
money.
I3my grade one after eight lessons and got distinction.By the time I started
secondary school,we couldn't afford lessons again,so I retumed to my paper keyboard.I passed
grade three, then grade five, practising only on my piece of paper.
For the grades above that, there's an4 that you should add a certain sensitivity into
your playing. The music teacher at my school said I could practise on the school's grand piano:I
would wake up at 5:30 am to get there in time and play until lessons started.I'd5 lunch
and then practice after school until the caretaker kicked me out.At home,I'd have dinner,do three
hours of revision, and then 6 practice until 1:00 am.
My school didn't offer music A-level.I found the Purcell School for young musicians. The
audition (was extremely challenging, and I felt overwhelmed. To my amazement,I was
offered a 7.
I had been told I had started playing too_&一to reach conservatoire(音乐学院)level,,
but when I left Purcell,I was awarded the senior piano prize.Iam now at the Guildhall School in
London,where I was offered a scholarship.I feel9:it's been 10 years since I drew my
paper piano and I'm at one of the world's leading conservatoires.
The irony is that I continue to do a lot of my practice away from the piano-what we call
mental practice.It10key areas of the mind that are less readily accessed by piano
playing alone. The paper plano helped stimulate my curiosity about how music works.

At my first lesson in Chinese calligraphy,my teacher told me plainly:"Now I will teach
you how to write your name. And to make it beautiful."I felt my breath catch.I was curious.
Growing up in Singapore,I had an unusual relationship with my Chinese name.My parents
are ethnically Chinese,so they asked fortune tellers to decide my name, aiming for maximum luck.
As a result,I ended up with a nonsense and embarrassing name:Chen Yiwen,meaning,roughly,
old",barley(感米)”and "warm
When I arrived in America for college at 18,I put on an American accent and abandoned
my Chinese name. When I moved to Hong Kong in 2021,after 14 years in the States,I decided to
lear calligraphy. Why not get back in touch with my heritage?I thought.
In calligraphy, the idea is to copy the old masters'techniques, thereby refining your own.
Every week, though,my teacher would give uncomfortably on-the-nose assessments of my person.
You need to be braver,”he once observed.“Have confidence..Try to produce a bold stroke(笔画),"
For years,I had prided myself on presenting an image of confidence, but my writing betrayed me.
I was trying to make sense of this practice. You must visualize the word as it is to be written
and leave a trace of yourself in it As a bodily practice, calligraphy could go beyond its own
cultural restrictions.Could it help me go beyond mine?My teacher once said'to me,"When you
look at the word, you see the body.Though a word on the page is two-dimensional,it contains
multitudes, conveying the force you've applied, the energy of your grip, the arch of your spine."I
had been learning calligraphy to get in touch with my cultural roots, but what I was really seeking
was a return to myself. Now I have sensed that the pleasure out of calligraphy allows me to know
myself more fully.
During a recent lesson,my teacher pointed at the word I had just finished, telling me:"This
word is much better.I can see the choices you made, your calculations, your flow.Trust yourself.
This word is yours."He might as well have said,"This word is you."
24.What did the author initially think of her name"Chen Yiwen"?

Creativity is a product of the human mind. But why are some people more creative.than
others?
Having a unique brain has been proposed as one possibility.Take Wolfgang Amadeus
Mozart's musical creativity. It has been suggested that he had Tourette's syndrome,a brain
condition linked to a range of symptoms, which could have played a role.Other proposals link
creativity to intelligence or even to the use of certain drugs.
In the Creative Brain:Myths and Truths, scientist Anna Abraham examines these ideas and
four more, describing them as myths (and each is discussed in a chapter. But rather than
fully debunk them,Abraham's precondition is that they all contoin atruth.
She researches into how these beliefs developed and spread-and why they are so hard to
desert. Her focus is on how misinformation is often related to conflictig results in the scientific
evidence that is supposed to back them up.
Take the common idea that the brain's.right hemisphere ()is associated with creativity.
Both behavioral and brain-based studies have explored this, but findings are hard to compare
because the ways of measuring different aspects, such as the level of creativity, vary greatly. This
means we can find evidence supporting both the right and left hemispheres being dominant in
creative activities,as well as the joint involvement of the two.
Such problems, says Abraham, originate in the fact that creativity typically involves many
elements but the focus is often drawn to just one,the imagination needed to make something new.
Other aspects-such as the drive to create, the hard work involved and the ability to produce
something that sympathizes with an audience-are also cruclal. Many explanations, she says,
treat creativity too simplistically:for example, taking certain drugs can make someone more open,
and thus better able to think creatively, but may not affect their motivation.
第6页共12页
Abraham provides a good summarization of the relationship between creativity and the brain,
covering a lot of ground while doing so.She encourages readers to think more deeply about
brain-based creativity theories, even if they seem backed up by evidence. How creativity
originates in the brain is complex and probably can't be explained by a simple narrative.Perhaps
we need a new approach.
28.What does the word"debunk"underlined in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Charge.
B Deny.
C.Approve.
D.Clarify.
29.What can we leam about creativity from the passage?
A.It helps to sympathize with an audience.
B.It is dominated by the brain's right hemisphere.
C.It is a complex process involving many factors.
D.It can be enhanced by hard work and motiwation.
30.As for brain-based creativity theories.Abraham is
A.appreciative B.disapproving
C.objective
D.unconcerned
31.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To explore the myths and truths about creativity and the brain.
B.To prove that creativity is greatly linked with a unique brain.
C.To argue that creativity is mainly determined by intelligence.
D.To encourage the use of drugs to partly enhance creativity.

The 2024 Nobel Prizes honored both works relating to artificial intelligence and efforts by
the group Nihon Hidankyo to end the nuclear()war.It was a striking juxtaposition.
In the 20th century, the Nobel Committees awarded prizes in physics and chemistry for
discoveries uncovering the structure of atoms, which enabled the development and subsequent use
of nuclear weapons.Decades later, the Nobel committees awarded this year's Peace Prize for work
trying to counteract one way nuclear science ended up being used. There are parallels between the
development of nuclear weapons from basic physics research, and the risks posed by applications
of AI emerging from work that began as fundamental research in computer science, including
misinformation,job displacement,and supervision.Will the Nobel Committees be awarding a
Peace Prize in the next century to the people cleaning up the mess AI scientists leave behind?
About 80 years ago, hundreds of top scientists joined the Manhattan ProJect in a race to build
an atomic weapon before the Nazis did.Yet after Germany surrendered, the project continued and
only one scientist,Joseph Rotblat,Jeft the project. After the war he retumned to physics, focusing
on medical uses of radiation, and became a leader in the nuclear antiproliferation (
movement.
第7页共12页
Looking back,Rotblat explained"You get yourself involved in a certain way and forget you
are a human being. It becomes an addiction, and you just go on for the sake of producing a gadget
without thinking about the consequences. And then, having done this, you find some justification
for having produced it.Not the other way around."
Though written decades ago, these words are a frighteningly accurate description of the
widespread spirit in AI research today. Now,as then, there are thoughtful, grounded individuals
who stand out in the development of Al.Ed Newton-Rex resigned last year from his position
leading the music team at Stability Al,over the company's insistence on creating generative AI
models trained on copyrighted data without paying for that use.In 2024 Suchir Balaji resigned as
a researcher at OpenAl over similar concers.
When we look back on the nuclear era,we send a signal to scientists today about what we
value. When the Nobel Prize Committees choose which people among those working on AI to
award, they set a powerful incentive (for the AI researchers of today and tomorrow.
It is too late to change the events of the 20th century, but we can hope for better outcomes for
AI.We can start by looking past those in machine learning focused on rapid development of
capabilities, instead following the lead of those who insist on engaging with the context of their
work and who have the capacity not only to evaluate but also respond to changing circumstances.
As the nuclear era teaches us,right now is the time to carefully evaluate what applications of
scientific discovery and whom among today's sclentists reflect the values not of the world in
which we currently live but the one which we hope to inhabit
32.According to Paragraph 1 and 2,what does the underlined word "juxtaposition"refer to?
A.The continuous efforts of the Nobel Committees to promote peace.
B.The direct link between AI research and nuclear weapons development.
C.The comparison between the positive impacts of AI and nuclear technology.
D.The contrast between scientific discoveries and their unintended harmful outcomes.
33.The author quotes Joseph Rotblat mainly to
A.challenge an assumption
B.suggest an alternative
C.make a comparison
D.illustrate a point
4.It is implied in the passage that
A.cooperation among organizations is needed for responsible AI progress
B.the Nobel Prize's recognition is a warning for AI's future development
C.the Nobel Prize should stop awarding AI-related research
D.AI researchers have lost control of their own creations

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)
We humans arc comparison creatures.35
This quality may have evolved as a
means of helping us fit into the social hicrarchy (of the cultures we inhabited.Regardless of
the reasons, social comparison plays a significant role in how we view and evaluate ourselves, and
how we interact with our world.
It used to be that our primary reference of comparison was our local communities, primarily
neighbors and co-workers.Because we tend to gather around those similar to ourselves in terms of
educational level, work income, and shared interests, the range of differences when we compared
ourselves to others was fairly small.Unfortunately, with the emergence of the Internet,we can
now compare ourselves to literally anyone in the world.36What had in previous
generations been a small gap in our comparisons has now become so large and unattainable.
3 When so many people that are easily discoverable on the Intemet seem to be so
successful, famous, influential and beautiful, given our preference to compare,it is difficult not to
have it influence how we view ourselves.Sadly, these comparisons usually result in our feeling
inadequate and"less than".
These harmful comparisons also damage our emotional lives. When we feel lacking,we
experience a variety of unpleasant and unhealthy emotions. We feel jealousy and envy for what
others have and what we lack.38
It's one thing to realize that you compare yourself to others. It's another thing to recognize
that social comparison is often corrosive(逐步慢蚀的)to you in so many ways psychologically and
emotionally. It's an entirely other thing to stop yourself from comparing yourself to others.
39
A.We are constantly measuring ourselves against other people.
B.Yet it is possible, and it is worth the effort for your mental health.
C.Thus,we are now exposed to groups that are quite different from us.
D.We believe that there is something wrong with us compared to others.
E.We can even feel bitterness and anger at others for the unfairness of it all.
F..Comparing ourselves to others has the potential to increase our life experience.
G.This new level of comparison has huge implications for our psychological lives.
