For years, we’ve been teaching a class on music and the mind. At the start of each semester, we’ve asked the students to complete a survey on their favorite songs and artists. Students’ favorite songs and artists get longer and more varied each year and their playlists barely overlap (重叠).
Indeed, listening to music is a deeply private and personal experience nowadays and even more so with the introduction of the iPod and smartphones. When teenagers listen to music via streaming, artificial intelligence (AI) and social media platforms team up to suggest personalized playlists for them.
Some young people feel that AI-generated playlists make them exposed to something dull. Their playlists are populated with songs and artists they’ve never heard of before, yet they all sound similar. In the past, they might not have noticed such a situation. Their musical consumption was narrowly dominated by the “Top-40” artists. However, AI-generated playlists have changed this, since a wider range of music is available. If they think their AI-influenced playlists are unappealing, they still have the ability to search for new music. Just because AI can suggest songs, it doesn’t prevent them researching and discovering music on their own, or sharing playlists. Anything that exists, they can find. The store is always open.
Music listening and preferences play an important role in young people’s transition (过渡) from childhood to adulthood, two seemingly opposing but vital processes: forming a unique identity, while at the same time becoming part of a community. However, AI-generated playlists have the potential to challenge this transition. So does AI make it easier to differentiate the self, but harder to bond with others?
Fears of new technologies are commonplace. For example, the decline of scheduled network TV erased lots of common ground for discussion, so will 50 million Americans ever again tune in to watch the series ending of a TV show, as they did for Friends in 2004?
If AI is, indeed, contributing to the transformation of teenagers’ shared listening experiences, then AI playlists are more than a convenient way to discover their next favorites. They are a revolution worth paying attention to.
1.What makes teenagers’ music listening experiences more private?
A.The extensive use of electronic devices.
B.The easy access to musical instruments.
C.The lack of interaction among teenagers.
D.The popularization of music education.
2.What is paragraph 3 mainly about concerning AI-generated playlists?
A.Their accessibility. B.Their development.
C.Their advantages. D.Their limitations.
3.What challenge may AI-generated playlists present?
A.They make identifying oneself impossible.
B.They provide less for teens to communicate.
C.They result in the decline of network TV.
D.They prevent teens choosing similar songs.
4.Why does the author mention Friends in paragraph 5?
A.To emphasize its popularity among Americans.
B.To explain people’s willingness to accept AI.
C.To tell us the predictability of new technology.
D.To show the potential social influence of AI.
Why Do We Love Sad Music?
Scientists have long puzzled over humanity’s attraction to sad music. In our daily lives, we often find ourselves drawn to tunes that carry a sad undertone, despite the general pursuit of happiness. While happy songs dominate pop charts, ballads like Adele’s “Someone Like You” or Billie Eilish’s dark pop songs consistently top global charts. 5
A 2023 study in Nature Psychology reveals that sad music activates two brain regions at the same time: the amygdala (associated with emotional processing) and the nucleus accumbens (linked to pleasure). 6 This neural (神经的) “sweet spot” creates a safe space to process complex emotions without real-world risks, like emotional weightlifting that strengthens our resilience (恢复力).
7 In Japan, the concept of mono no aware — appreciating the beauty of transience (无常) — explains the cultural embrace of sad folk songs. Similarly, Portuguese fado music transforms personal sorrow into collective catharsis (宣泄). “Sadness in art isn't passive suffering,” says music therapist Dr. Hannah Park. “ 8 ”
The phenomenon also has social benefits. Crowds singing tearful ballads at concerts report stronger group bonding. 9 Moreover, sad music can serve as a source of inspiration. Many writers and artists find that the emotions stirred by sad melodies fuel their creativity, leading to the birth of more profound works. Next time you reach for a heartbreaking playlist, remember: you' re not drowning in misery — you’re conducting profound emotional transformation.
A.It's an active dialogue between the artist and listener.
B.Cultures worldwide have developed unique frameworks for this contadiction.
C.Streaming data shows rainy days increase classical music consumption by 18%.
D.This contradiction highlights a fundamental aspect of human psychology.
E.Recent research proves dogs also respond emotionally to minor-key melodies.
F.Evolutionary biologists argue this shared defencelessness enhances empathy.
G.Surprisingly, listeners describe the experience as “comforting” rather than “depressing”.

Good morning everyone, I am Li Hua. It’s a great honour to be invited here to deliver a speech about how music changed my life.
Once I was a shy girl. Every time I was asked to answer questions in class, I felt so nervous that I couldn’t speak fluently. So I was discouraged and didn’t know how to deal with the situation. It was music that inspired me with confidence. I thought to myself “Now that I had a talent for music, why not sing it in public bravely?” Therefore, I often sang songs in my classroom or in front of hundreds of other schoolmates. Last term I took part in a school concert and was awarded a prize for my wonderful performances. Music gave me confidence and a sense of achievement. I think I should owe my success to music.
I hope all of us will make music our friend who can cure you of your weaknesses.
Thank you!

【答案】1.A 2.C 3.B 4.D
根据第二段“Indeed, listening to music is a deeply private and personal experience nowadays and even more so with the introduction of the iPod and smartphones. When teenagers listen to music via streaming, artificial intelligence (AI) and social media platforms team up to suggest personalized playlists for them.(的确,如今听音乐是一种非常私人和个人的体验,随着iPod和智能手机的推出,这种体验更是如此。当青少年通过流媒体听音乐时,人工智能和社交媒体平台会联合起来为他们推荐个性化的播放列表)”可知,电子产品的广泛使用使听音乐更加私人化。故选A。
根据第三段“Some young people feel that AI-generated playlists make them exposed to something dull. Their playlists are populated with songs and artists they’ve never heard of before, yet they all sound similar. In the past, they might not have noticed such a situation. Their musical consumption was narrowly dominated by the ‘Top-40’ artists.
根据第四段“Music listening and preferences play an important role in young people’s transition (过渡) from childhood to adulthood, two seemingly opposing but vital processes: forming a unique identity, while at the same time becoming part of a community. However, AI-generated playlists have the potential to challenge this transition. So does AI make it easier to differentiate the self, but harder to bond with others?(音乐聆听和音乐偏好在年轻人从童年到成年的过渡过程中扮演着重要的角色,这是两个看似对立但至关重要的过程:形成一个独特的身份,同时成为一个社区的一部分。然而,人工智能生成的播放列表有可能挑战这种转变。那么,人工智能是否让我们更容易区分自我,但却更难与他人建立联系?)”可知,AI生成式歌单可能呈现的挑战是让青少年之间的联系更加困难,减少了共同讨论、交流话题的机会。故选B。
4.推理判断题。根据第五段“Fears of new technologies are commonplace. For example, the decline of scheduled network TV erased lots of common ground for discussion, so will 50 million Americans ever again tune in to watch the series ending of a TV show, as they did for Friends in 2004?(对新技术的恐惧是司空见惯的。例如,定期电视网络的衰落抹去了许多讨论的共同基础,那么5000万美国人还会像2004年看《老友记》那样,收看电视节目的结局吗?)”可知,提及《老友记》是为了展示AI可能造成的社会影响。故选D。
