Jia and Lin are two characters from the classic Chinese novel A Dream of Red Mansions (《红楼梦》), written by Cao Xueqin (1715-1763) . Now the book has been made into an English-language opera. After being performed in San Francisco, US, the performance came to Beijing, Changsha and Wuhan in 2017.
Many of the opera’s creators have backgrounds in both Chinese and American cultures, including the director and playwrights. Their understanding of both cultures helped them change a Chinese classic into a foreign - language opera.
The book, which covers the rise and fall of the Jia family, has 120 chapters and hundreds of characters. But opera writer David Henry Hwang cut down the number of characters to just seven. Hwang, a Chinese - American, focused on the love story between Jia and Lin and tried to write a heartbreaking tragedy that everyone would understand.
The art director Timmy Yip, from Hong Kong, tried to help foreign people understand the characters using costumes and stage settings. He compared Lin to water and gave her a light green costume. When Lin showed up on stage, there was usually water around her on the stage.

Super space seeds
Since humans sent the first satellite(卫星)to space in the 1950s, scientists have been studying an important topic: how to grow food in space if humans will one day live there. A recent experiment(实验)at the Tiangong space station makes a big step forward.
Chinese astronauts have successfully grown rice seedlings(幼苗)during the Shenzhou XIV mission. “The rice seedlings are growing very well,” said Zheng Huiqiong, a researcher from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Since the rice experiment began on July 29, the seedlings of the tall shoot rice variety(高秆水稻品种)have reached a height of 30 centimeters. The seedlings of the dwarf rice variety(矮秆水稻品种)have grown to 5 centimeters, China Daily reported on Aug 30.
While there have been other rice experiments in space, this one is the first of its kind to produce the complete life cycle of a plant—it begins with a seed and ends with a mature(成熟的)plant producing new seeds.
Such food-growing experiments are not just for astronauts. They can also solve food problems on Earth. By sending seeds to space, we can create mutated(突变的)seeds, thanks to microgravity(微重力), lack of air and cosmic rays(宇宙射线). The seeds can then produce higher yields(产量)on Earth.
For more than 30 years, China has developed over 260 new types of seeds in space. They are planted every year in fields that cover tens of millions of hectares(公顷).
According to Yao Tong, an engineer from Hainan Aerospace Engineering Breeding Research Center(海南航天工程育种研发中心), 30 percent of strawberries sold in Beijing are “space strawberries”, which are as big as eggs. The center has also produced “space tomatoes” with yields increased by 30 percent, and “space bananas” with a growth cycle(生长周期)shortened from 13 months to 9 months.
21. How high did the tall shoot rice variety grow for the first month?
A. 5 cm. B. 25 cm. C. 30 cm. D. 35 cm.
22 What does “this one” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The dwarf rice variety. B. The tall shoot rice variety.
C. The rice experiment on Shenzhou XIV. D. The last rice experiment in space.
23. How does the current rice experiment differ from other experiments?
A. Its seedlings have successfully come up. B. It goes through a complete life cycle.
C Its seedlings are growing very well. D. It uses completely new rice varieties.
24. Why do we grow food in space?
a. To feed astronauts.
b. To study microgravity.
c. To increase yields on Earth.
d. To research on cosmic rays.
A. ab B. bc C. ac D. bd
25. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. Space planting is benefiting us. B. Space planting has disadvantages.
C. People will never run out of food. D. People are afraid of food bred in space.

【24题详解】
推理判断题。根据“Such food-growing experiments are not just for astronauts. They can also solve food problems on Earth.”可知,这样的食物种植实验不仅仅是为了宇航员。它们还可以解决地球上的粮食问题。再根据“The seeds can then produce higher yields(产量)on Earth.”
故选A。

C919: A New Star in the Skies
China has made a big step forward in its aviation (航空) industry with the C919, the country’s first homegrown airplane. This exciting development means that China is now able to build its own airplanes, just like the big names Boeing and Airbus.
The C919 is a bit like the Airbus A320 and the Boeing B737. It can carry between 158 and 192 passengers and can fly distances between 4,075 kilometers to 5,555 kilometers. That’s enough to fly from one side of China to the other!
Air China and China Southern Airlines have just taken delivery of their first C919 airplanes. They plan to use these planes on many different routes, which means more people will get to fly on them. China Eastern Airlines, which got its C919s first, is already using them on several routes within China.
So far, more than 1,000 orders have been placed for the C919, and nine planes have been delivered. That’s a lot of interest in a new airplane! Air China, China Southern, and China Eastern have all ordered 100 C919s each, and they expect to get all of them by 2031.
The C919 is not just about flying people from one place to another. It’s also helping China to develop new technologies and improve its manufacturing skills. This can lead to even more advanced products in the future.
Since the C919 started flying with China Eastern Airlines last year, it has completed over 3,600 flights and flown for more than 10,000 hours. That’s a lot of flying and a good sign that the plane is reliable.
China’s air travel market is growing fast, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. In July, there were 69 million trips, which is a new record. As more people travel, the demand for airplanes will keep increasing.
Experts predict that China’s air travel market will become the biggest in the world by 2043. That means a lot more airplanes will be needed and the C919 could be a big part of that growth.
So, the C919 is not just an airplane; it’s a symbol of China’s progress and a sign of even greater things to come.
找出文中与The C919 is kind of similar to the Airbus A320 and the Boeing B737.语义相似的句子。

Pyramid Surprise
Linda and I were born only a few days apart, so every year we plan a birthday party together. This year, our birthday theme (主题) was “Discover the Pyramids”.
“What about inviting Mary?” Linda asked.
Mary was lonely, and hadn’t made many friends, but she was better at math than anyone else in class.
“Hmm, she wears the same old trousers every day. How could she even afford a party dress?”
After school the next day, Linda handed me a box. “What’s that?” I asked.
“My birthday gift from my aunt. I thought it would be nice to give this to Mary,” Linda said.
I opened the box. Inside was a gift certificate (礼品券) for our favorite clothes store.
“Wow,” I gasped. We both knew how many cute clothes that would buy.
“So, are we going to just hand it to her?”
“How embarrassing that would be!” Linda answered.
She was right. Mary would be totally embarrassed if we gave her money for clothes.
“What if we ask our teacher...”
“Wait a second. I have an idea.” Linda said.
“What? What?”
“I’m not going to tell you!”
On the day of our party, Mary arrived, with—no surprise—the very old brown trousers.
We sang, danced and ate biscuits. “And now for the big prize game,” Linda said. Big prize? My mouth dropped. This was not in the plan.
“The big prize game is like this: Tom and Sam were building pyramids... If their pyramids had to be 60 feet high, who would finish first?”
A math game. Of course! Linda winked (眨眼示意) at me. No one was surprised when Mary came up with the answer before anyone else and walked off with the box.

A. 5 cm. B. 25 cm. C. 30 cm. D. 35 cm.
22. What does “this one” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
C. Its seedlings are growing very well.

That means a lot more airplanes will be needed, and the C919 could be a big part of that growth.
So, the C919 is not just an airplane; it’s a symbol of China’s progress and a sign of even greater things to come.
