The Mojave Desert is a large desert in the southwest United States that includes much of southern
California, some parts of central California, and parts of Arizona,Nevada, and Utah.Named after the
Mohave Native American tribe, the Mojave Desert's borders are loosely defined by the presence of Joshua
Trees, which are a native species to the area.More concretely, the Mojave Desert is bordered by the
Tehachapi,San Gabriel, and San Bernadino mountain ranges.
Joshua Tree National Park
Joshua Tree National Park lies within the desert's boundaries, contributing to the area's high number
of tourists each year. The highest point in the Mojave Desert is Charleston Peak, which reaches 3,632.6
meters above sea level. This swing in elevation()accounts for some of the wild weather the region
receives.
Palmdale
Palmdale,California is a larger city within the Mojave Desert, while other cities in the desert are much
smaller:Bullhead City and Kingman,both in Arizona,have a population of 40,000 people or less.Several
major highways and roads cross the desert, including Interstate 40 and Interstate 15.Historic Route 66 also
crossed part of the desert at one time, but most of the towns and roads fell into disrepair once the interstate
was built.
Las Vegas
While the Mojave Desert is generally less populated, several urban centers and small towns do exist in
the region. The largest of these centers is Las Vegas,Nevada, which attracts tourists to the hot,dry
climate because of numerous historical and scenic attractions.
Death Valley
Death Valley, which lies within the Mojave Desert,is the lowest and hottest region in North America,
at nearly 92 meters below sea level.Temperatures can surpass 120 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer.
Today,Death Valley is part of Death Valley National Park, the hottest and driest national park in the
United States.
21.What do we know about the Mojave Desert?

When Sable Marie Cady Johnson saw a poster online advertising a food truck,it inspired her to create
the innovative project,a Shakespeare Food Truck Festival,to connect students with the Shakespeare's plays
they're studying in her class. Her idea became a reality on April 28.Nearly 200 students designed and built
cardboard outline of food trucks from which they sold food during a mid-morning activity period.
Students were given two options when creating their food trucks. The first option was a character's
truck in which students were asked to imagine that one character from the current play they're studying has
decided to leave everything behind and take a food truck out on the road.Students had to design the truck
from the view of the character, making appearance, theme, staffing and menu choices based on all they
have learned about him or her.
The second option was a themed food truck in which students were asked to imagine what famous
authors, publishers, journalists would be eating when visiting a world literary conference. The truck needed
to represent a current play being studied and choices of appearance, theme and menu had to be based on
elements from the text of that play.
The festival took place in the cafeteria, which was filled wall-to-wall with 45 food trucks. The students
worked in teams to staff their food trucks with tickets purchased to use as payment for menu items. Two
juniors at the Murderous Meals food truck-Breanna Allen and David Newsome-were excited about their
Macbeth-themed eatery."It took two days for us to come up with the theme and three days to create the
truck,"said Newsome."We were able to integrate what we've learned in the classroom by designing our
food truck around the play."
"This is awesome,"said Johnson."It's beyond my expectations. It took lots of cardboard, lots of time
and lots of creativity.I loved watching the students engage in this project and make it their own.Money
raised from the festival will be donated to the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts in Hatfield."
24.Why did Johnson launch the project of a Shakespeare Food Truck Festival?
A.To show honor to Shakespeare.
B.To raise students'sense of charity.
C.To get students connected with plays.
D.To let students experience a different life.
25.What should students selecting the first option do?
A.Rent a truck and decorate it.
B.Name the menu as they like.
C.Sell items in a food truck on the road.
D.Choose a character from the plays of Shakespeare.
26.What does Johnson think of the project?
A.Risky but valuable.
B.Expensive but meaningful.
C.Demanding but long-lasting.
D.Time-consuming but rewarding.
27.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Power of Shakespeare's Plays
B.A Thoughtful and Creative Teacher
C.Bite into Shakespeare for Food Truck Project
D.Engage Students in Books by Role Performance
C
Scientists might be able to study the world's flora and fauna(动植物群)by analyzing DNA floating
through the air. That's the conclusion of a study published in Current Biology,in which a team identified
more than 180 types of organisms, including plants, insects and animals, using DNA captured by filters(
from air-pollution monitoring stations.
Scientists struggle to keep track of changes in ecosystems and rates of species decline because they lack
facilities to measure biodiversity on large scales().Typically,researchers monitor a few species in
small regions using labour-intensive methods such as camera monitors,in-person observations and
examining traces including footprints.Over large scales, only very general measurements are possible.
But environmental DNA(eDNA)-small amounts of genetic material left by living things-that is
collected automatically using air-pollution tracking networks could help solve this problem, says Elizabeth
Clare,an ecologist at York University and lead author of the study.
Scientists have been collecting eDNA from soil and water samples for about 20 years to track rare or
endangered species.Regulatory agencies have used eDNA to detect invasive()species.But it
wasn't until last year that scientists, including Clare, reported that eDNA can be captured from air samples
and used to explore biodiversity.
3/6页
The advantage of using existing air-monitoring stations is that this infrastructure has already been set
up in many countries around the world. But before the monitoring method can be rolled out widely,
researchers need to work out some details, including the best sampling time to ensure broad eDNA
collection.Other unknowns include how far eDNA travels in air, which will determine how large an area
this method can monitor.
Study co-author Joanne Littlefair says the team is also still working out what ecological information
eDNA can provide beyond identifying species. For example, she suggests it is unlikely that the method will
be able to measure species richness, but it could monitor bird migrations and how they are changing in
response to climate change.
28.How did researchers carry out the research published in Current Biology?
A.By studying DNA obtained in the air.
B.By collecting the remaining footprints.
C.By making careful observations in person.
D.By expanding the range of species observed.
29.What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The lack of sufficient facilities.
B.The causes of declining biodiversity.
C.The scales of wildlife population monitoring.
D.The disadvantages of current species monitoring.
30.What is the function of paragraph 4?
A.To highlight the significance.
B.To clarify a concrete concept.
C.To add background information.
D.To give more supporting evidence.
31.What does Joanne Littlefair want to stress concerning eDNA?
A.It has unavoidable limitations.
B.It can have a wider application.
C.It can be used to identify species.
D.It needs evidence to confirm its accuracy.
D
You are more likely to think of the information that is repeated to be true than the information you hear
only once. You assume that if people are going to put in effort to repeat a statement, this reflects the truth
of the statement.
Simply repeating some pieces of information does not actually make it true, but this tendency-also
called the illusory(truth effect-is a prejudice that can lead you to draw the wrong conclusions. An
important step in decreasing the negative influence of prejudices in thinking is to be aware of them.To what
degree are people aware of the illusory truth effect? This question was addressed in the journal Cognition by
Simone Mattavelli.
In the critical study, participants did two sessions. In one session, they read about a study in which
people were exposed to trivia()statements and then were asked whether both statements they had
heard before as well as new statements were true. They were asked to predict the percentage of each
statement that would be judged as true.At another session a few days later, participants actually performed
this study, reading a set of 20 trivia statements and then judging the truth of 40 statements, half of which
were the ones they saw earlier and the other half of which were new.
This study replicated the illusory truth effect.People were more likely to judge statements they had
seen before as true than statements that were new.Two interesting findings emerged from the predictions.
First, participants tended to underestimate the size of the illusory truth effect for everyone.Second,
participants were more wrong when predicting their own performance compared to predicting the
performance of another person.
This work is particularly important in light of the amount of misinformation presented in social media.
Many people are influencing public opinions about political and economic matters.Social media websites
with misinformation will lead people to believe this information is true just because it is stated.
32.What is Simone's study mainly about concerning the illusory truth effect?
A.People's awareness of it.
B.People's reaction to it.
C.Its causes.
D.Its process.
33.How did the participants engage in the first session of the study?
A.Reading,repeating and judging.
B.Reading,assessing and forecasting.
C.Recording,judging and predicting.
D.Predicting,observing and reflecting.
34.What does the underlined word "replicate"in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Correspond with.B.Be contrary to.
C.Put forward.
D.Account for.
35.What is the author's attitude toward Simone's study?
A.Unclear.
B.Dismissive.
C.Doubtful.
D.Approving.

4/6页
my time,I reflect on how to maintain some sense of balance in my life.36
First of all,it is sensible to think small. We often feel like our values-based actions need to take a
significant amount of time.37 Look over the areas that you are having trouble fitting into your life.Is
there a way to engage in a small part daily or weekly?Maybe instead of 90 minutes of yoga, you can do a
few poses in the morning or stretch during work break.
38 A good friend of mine often sets up calls with me while she is taking her daily walks. She still
gets her exercise and her time outside, and we also get to connect.Doing housework as a family can help
parents have valued family time while still keeping their homes running smoothly.
As we know, life is messy and ever-changing.It's also important to pay attention while we are doing
the actions that matter to us.It can be easy to think of the areas we aren't engaged in.39 Bringing
mindfulness to our actions makes them more rewarding.
One more thing that needs to be added is the fact that no matter how much attention we bring to
balancing our lives,we will unavoidably fall out of balance again.40 Please be gentle with ourselves.
And it may be helpful to think of the saying,"Fall down seven times, get up eight."
A.Don't take it too much to heart.
B.We may put meaningful actions together.
C.However,we don't notice what we are doing.
D.Balancing our lives requires planning and action.
E.I often underestimate how long it takes me to do a task.
F.Hence,I can do what matters to me across many areas of my life.
G.Even small numbers of values-based actions can be meaningful, though.

Danielle once asked her daughter how she modeled kindness. But her daughter,Kiddo, spoke nothing.
She had no idea about modeling kindness. Therefore,Danielle set an example for Kiddo by an encounter
they had with a guy at the airport when she was eight years old.
Dressed in worn clothes, the guy held up the line at a newsstand while he counted out pennies to buy a
bottle of cola.Meanwhile, the businessman behind him kept glancing down at his watch before finally
saying,"Buddy,do you mind? Some of us have a plane to catch!"Immediately, the untidy man looked
embarrassed. He handed the drink back to the cashier, then went away,limping().
Danielle was shocked. This man was clearly going through something. She couldn't let this pass.
"Kiddo, keep an eye on where he sits,"she told her daughter, who was watching the situation unfold.
Danielle asked the cashier what the deal was with the old man and bought her things, plus the man's drink
that the cashier still had behind the counter. They found the man again, sitting at a nearby gate.Danielle
walked up to him,and held out the drink with a smile. But he didn't take it.Not only that,he looked away.
Still,Danielle insisted,"I thought you might like this.It looks like you need a drink."
The man glanced back uncertainly, then slowly took the drink.Because she had time to kill before the
flight,Danielle asked if they could sit down next to him.As it turned out,his name was George. He had a
medical issue that made standing difficult. When he was in the newsstand and realized he'd left his wallet
back at the gate,he didn't have the energy to attempt the trip a second time.Explanation over,George
didn't say anything, not even acknowledging Danielle as she left.
