Unit 1单元话题
A.Choose the best answer. (选择最佳答案):
You probably know you should say “please” and “thank you” at restaurants. You probably know the rules of a library. You know you should respect and be nice to your classmates. But do you have music manners?
Keep It Down! You have to notice the volume of your music. You should not play your music so loud that everyone around you can hear it. Some people might even get angry. Usually, when you play the music loud on an MP3 player, other people can’t hear the words of the song. They just hear a loud sound. No one wants to listen to this. Very loud music can also be bad for your cars, so even if you are alone when listening to our MP3 player, you shouldn’t have it turned up too high.
Take Them off! You need to know when to turn your MP3 player off and put it away. Libraries and schools don’t allow MP3 players. There are other places, like museums, that don't have rules, but is would be rude to have your MP3 player on. Sometimes, it just doesn’t make sense to listen your MP3 player at event. Why would you listen to music at a play, a movie or a sporting event? You would miss what is going on and others would wonder why you even came.
Take One Out! Once in a while it’s okay just to take out one earphone and not the other. Imagine you are listening your MP3 player when someone asks you the way. It would not be rude to take out one earphone, tell him the way, and put back the earphone and continue listening. You can also do this when you order food at a fast-food restaurant or when you answer the telephone and it’s not for you.
It’s Your Choice! There are times when you need to decide what is best. For example, some people can listen to music on their MP3 Players when read books, while others think it is disturbing. In cases like this, you need to do what seems right for you.

Unit 2单元话题
Body language is a very important part of communication, but do you know the same gesture can mean different things in different countries?
Nodding your head usually means “YES”. Especially in Japan, nodding and bowing are the ways that locals show their agreement and respect. But in Bulgaria (保加利亚) and Greece, nodding up and down means “NO.”
Strong eye contact is very common in Spain, Greece and Arab (阿拉伯的) countries. However, in Finland and Japan, too much eye contact is |considered rude. To avoid embarrassment, they often look at the other person’s neck or shoulders instead.
Tapping your nose means “secret” in England while it means “be careful” in Italy.
In many cultures, like Italy and the U. S., people use their arms freely when talking. However, Northern Europeans don’t like gesturing with their arms. They think it is too dramatic (戏剧化的). Similarly, in Japan, gesturing with broad arm movements is thought to be impolite.
Sitting cross-legged is common in North America and some European countries. But in Asia and the Middle East, sitting like this is not respectful.
The “thumbs up” sign is another interesting example. In the U. S., it usually means “good job” or “everything is okay”. But in some Middle-Eastern countries like Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Iran, this gesture is very offensive. It’s like a very bad word.
Understanding these differences helps us avoid misunderstandings. When you travel or talk to someone from a different culture, pay attention to their body language. You can make a big difference in how well you communicate!
1.Tom is traveling in Greece. He asks a local, “Is there a bank nearby?” The local nods. What does this likely mean?
A.The local didn’t want to answer Tom’s question. B.The local didn’t understand Tom’s question.
C.The local meant there isn’t a bank nearby. D.The local was not sure.
2.When an Englishman taps his nose during a conversation, he may probably want to say “________”.
A.Look out! B.Keep quiet!
C.I disagree with you. D.It’s just between you and me.
3.If you’re chatting with a Japanese man, which of the following behaviors will make him feel comfortable?
A.nodding head B.looking at him in his eyes
C.using a lot of arm gestures D.sitting with legs crossed
4.In which picture “thumbs up” is not a suitable gesture?
A. B. C. D.
5.What does the underlined word “offensive” mean?
A.wrong B.angry C.rude D.embarrassed

A.ask readers to use more body language
B.help readers better understand people from other cultures

Students often want to practice their English outside class. One of the best ways to practice your English is to speak to a foreigner. This week’s question comes from a student who is eager to start a conversation with the foreigners he sees every day. One student asks, “Is it Okay to try to talk to foreigners I see in the street?”
The answer is yes or no, but probably no! If you see a foreigner who looks lost, it is polite to ask him, “May I help you?” But, otherwise, you should probably let them get on with their business. Situations, however, do exist (存在) where it is quite all right to talk to foreigners. If a foreigner enters your school, office, shop or restaurant, for instance (例如), feel free to ask him (for example):
— What is your name?
— Where do you come from?
— What do you think of Beijing?
— How long will you stay in Beijing?
There are also situations where it’s Okay to talk to foreigners in public places. If you see a foreigner alone in a restaurant, bar or coffee shop, it may be appropriate (合适的) to ask him or her:
— Is this seat free?
— Do you mind if I talk to you in English?
You can probably help them if they are new to China and if they are alone. You may be able to make them feel more welcome.
After a few such questions, you should know whether this person wants to talk to you or not. If they ask you similar questions, or if they give long, informative answers, you’re in luck. If not, then give them their privacy (独处). Talking to strangers is fun if you choose the right time and place.

D.it is impolite to help a foreigner find his way
3.When you first meet a foreigner, you should say “________”.
A.Where are you going?
B.Have you eaten your dinner?
C.Can you help me with my English?
D.Nice to meet you.
4.The writer suggests us that we should ________.
A.follow the foreigners when we meet them in the street

The people at the zoo said that it would cost about $900 a year for the food for Brocky.

Wild animals play a crucial role in our ecosystem. They help maintain the balance of nature. For example, wolves control the population of deer, which in turn affects the growth of plants. However, wild animals are facing many threats. One of the main threats is habitat loss. As human activities expand, forests are cut down, and wetlands are drained. This leaves wild animals with less space to live.
Another threat is poaching. People hunt wild animals for their valuable parts, such as ivory from elephants and fur from tigers. This not only reduces the number of wild animals but also disrupts the ecosystem.
We need to take action to protect wild animals. We can support conservation organizations, reduce our waste, and use less plastic to help protect their habitats.
1.What’s the importance of wild animals?
A.They are beautiful. B.They help maintain the balance of nature.
C.They can be hunted for money. D.They can be used for experiments.
2.What’s one of the main threats to wild animals?
A.Too much food. B.Habitat loss. C.Too many friends. D.Clean water.
3.Why do people poach wild animals?

A.Hunt more wild animals. B.Support conservation organizations.
C.Cut down more forests. D.Use more plastic.
5.How does poaching affect the ecosystem?
A.It makes the ecosystem better. B.It has no effect on the ecosystem.
C.It disrupts the ecosystem. D.It helps the ecosystem grow.
6.What’s the main idea of the passage?

The idea of a pet for an elderly person is one that is often considered. Elderly people may miss their friends and family who are no longer around. However, a kitten (a young cat) is not a good idea for an elderly person.
Kittens are tiring. Elderly people, even those in the best of health, will have a lot of difficulty chasing after a kitten and, unluckily, kittens do need a lot of care. They need to be trained not to destroy furniture and not to run up curtains (窗帘), and they need a lot of fun-time which an elderly person probably won’t be able to give them. And an elderly person will not want to look for the cat. It needs much physical energy.
It is not cheap to care for a cat of any age, but kittens can be particularly expensive. They need to be taken to the animal doctors for regular health checks, especially when they are young. Cat food is usually expensive, and their beds, toys and other things all cost much money. For an elderly person living on a pension (退休金), the cost can be more than they can bear.
Provided that an elderly person really does want an animal friend, an older cat would be a much better choice. Getting one from a cats’ home should make sure that it is already well trained. And with a little bit of care, it will live in a home with an elderly person. Asking advice from the cats’ home should make sure that a gentle cat will be good for an elderly person.
Anything that may cause extra stress (压力) for an elderly person should be carefully considered. So think of other ways to improve their quality of life.

A young boy is crying because his ear hurts. Then a man comes out of the forest. He carries some juice from a white fungus (蘑菇). Carefully, he puts the juice into the boy’s ear. In some rainforest villages of South America, that’s how earaches are treated!
Rainforest doctors, called shamans, use many kinds of plants as medicine. They make tea from one type of red vine (藤蔓). This tea cures stomachaches. Yellow flowers from another plant are used to treat snakebite.

Do you want to grow plants in your home during the cold weather? If so, you may want to use some plants to make your home smell nice. We are talking about rosemary (迷迭香) and bay laurel (月桂).
Both plants have good smell and it’s easy for you to plant them inside your home. You just put them near a window in the cold weather. As long as the temperature (温度) is warm in your house and you keep watering them, they will grow well. Both rosemary and bay laurel come from the warm places of the world. The area is cool but not cold during winter because it gets lots of sunlight.
For rosemary, water level is very important. You can’t water it too much. The plant needs a little wet soil (土壤). But too much water will injure the plant. It will grow slowly or even die. You can plant rosemary in the soil with some sand. The sand doesn’t keep much water, so this kind of soil will be the best place for rosemary to grow.
If you want to grow bay laurel inside, you can cut unwanted branches (枝杈) from the plant as it grows and make it look like a small tree. The plant will not die if you do this. Bay laurel has dark green leaves. It produces a nice smell when you cut its leaves. When you add them to the soup, it will taste better. Remember to wash the leaves before you put them into your dishes. So bay laurel is not only a plant, but also a kind of food.

6.The author wrote the article to ________.
A.ask readers to use more body language
B.help readers better understand people from other cultures
C.show readers the importance of body language
D.suggest readers make a big difference in communication
1.It is the best way to practice your spoken English with ________.
A.Japanese B.Americans C.your classmates D.French people
2.From the second paragraph, we can get to know that ________.
A.it is polite to stop a foreigner to talk with him in the street
B.it is polite to interrupt foreigners in a conversation
C.it is impolite to interrupt a foreigner when he or she is on business
D.it is impolite to help a foreigner find his way
3.When you first meet a foreigner, you should say “________”.
A.Where are you going?
B.Have you eaten your dinner?
C.Can you help me with my English?
D.Nice to meet you.
4.The writer suggests us that we should ________.
A.follow the foreigners when we meet them in the street
B.talk with foreigners in an accepted way
C.have a meal with foreigners in a restaurant
D.move to a place where a foreigner lives
5.This passage comes from a newspaper in column ________.

Would you like to adopt an animal? Although this sounds very unusual, some children have done just this. The Natural Zoo has given people the chance to adopt animals by paying for all of its food for one year. One of the animals that needed parents was a young tiger named Brocky. The people at the zoo said that it would cost about $900 a year for the food for Brocky.
Not many boys and girls have $900 to spend. That is why several hundred children and grown-ups each have sent a little money to the zoo to help pay for Brocky’s food. Some children sent in only a quarter because that was all the money they had. Other children sent in more money than that.
Since so many people sent money to the zoo to help pay for Brocky’s food, he now will be able to eat as much as he wants. Brocky surely must be a happy tiger to know that he has so many adopted parents. Many children must also be happy to know that they have helped to feed him. Sari: I don’t agree. What if you lie so you don’t hurt someone’s feelings? My sister got a new haircut (发型) last week, and she asked me if I liked it. I didn’t like it, but I didn’t want to hurt her feelings. So I told her it looked great. She was happy. I lied to my sister at that time.
Angela: Did you feel bad when you lied?
Sari: Well, at first I didn’t. But then my sister wanted to take me to the hairdresser’s (理发店). So I told her that I didn’t really like it. Then she was angry, and I felt guilty about lying.

Learning from the Shamans
Today, scientists from all over the world want to learn what these shamans know about plant medicines. They are studying the rainforest before the plants disappear. However, the rainforests are disappearing fast. Sometimes they want to use the land for farming. Sometimes they cut down the trees and sell the wood.
Now the scientists travel by boat, air, and on foot to rainforest villages. Then they spend long hours making their way through the hot and humid jungle (丛林) with the local shamans. The shamans show the scientists which plants can be used as medicines.
One USA company has already found an important new medicine. It comes from a plant in the rainforest. This medicine may soon be used to cure lung infections in kids. Rainforest plants might cure many bad illnesses. So medicine companies are working to save the rainforest.
