Since the Warring States Period (战国时代), people loved sweets and had different ways of making sugar. In the Tang Dynasty (朝代), people greatly improved skills of sugar making. So sugar, the precious thing that once could only enter homes of the kings, also went into common people’s homes. During the Song and Yuan Dynasties, people became less interested in only tasting sweetness. In the Ming Dynasty, some people added pictures with good luck to the bowl of sugar, and sugar painting came into being. Sugar painting is different from other paintings. Sugar painters use syrup (糖浆) as the material (材料), a spoon (汤勺) as the “paintbrush”, and a smooth table as the “paper”. To make syrup, they have to make sugar hot before painting. Since syrup may become hard if it cools, the painters have to make the work very quickly. They move the spoon full of syrup up and down, left and right. Soon a sugar painting is finished. _________ The sugar painting that used to be rich in shapes has become poorer because of fewer needs. What’s worse, only a few old sugar painters are willing to pass on this kind of art. For most people painting is a kind of art and difficult to understand. However, sugar painting has entered people’s daily lives. Through it, we may see the spiritual support of people across centuries. Now, sugar painting has been an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in China. So we Chinese should remember, miss and pass on the art till forever. 31. What does the underlined word “precious” in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A. valuable and expensive B. useful and cheap C. inexpensive but special D. simple but priceless 32. When did sugar painting appear? A. In the Warring States Period. B. In the Tang Dynasty. C. In the Yuan Dynasty. D. In the Ming Dynasty. 33. Why should sugar painters make the work very quickly? A. To show their good skills. B. To stop syrup becoming hard. C. To protect the spoon and the table. D. To save people’s waiting time. 34. Which sentences can be put in the ________? A. Luckily, more and more young people like it B. It’s strange that fewer people enjoy eating. C. However, it’s a pity that this folk art is dying recently. D. As time goes on, people create different forms of sugar painting. 35. How might the writer feel about today’s sugar painting according to Paragraph 4? A. Hopeful. B. Angry. C. Unclear. D. Worried. D Blue light blocking glasses have been popular over the past few years with the idea that they protect our eyes from the use of screens. But a new study shows they might not be as good for our eye health as expected. Researchers analyzed (分析) the information from 17 tests and reported the results. They found that the glasses filtering (过滤) out blue light on the market probably make no difference to eye strain (眼疲劳) or sleep quality. “We found there may be no short-term advantages in using blue light filtering lenses (镜片) to reduce eye strain that is connected with computer use,” said Laura Downie, a main member of the study. “It is also unclear whether these lenses affect vision quality and sleep-related results, and no conclusions could be drawn about any possible effects on retinal (视网膜) health in the longer term,” she added. “People should understand these findings when deciding whether to get these glasses.” The tests are different in size and length. The number of the people taking part in a test could be from as few as 5 to as many as 156. Some of the tests were finished in one day, while others even lasted five weeks. And the researchers said further research in more groups of people is needed to better learn about any other possible effects. Dr. Sumeer Singh, a researcher in the Downie Lab, said more studies should be done to find out whether the results change when different groups of people use different types of lenses, advising for future research. Blue light from computer screens and smartphones does influence our eyes, and it can cause sleeping problems. But instead of paying for special glasses, experts advise taking screen breaks. 36. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 1 refer to? A. The eyes. B. The researchers. C. Blue light blocking glasses. D. Different groups of people. 37. From the text, we can learn blue light blocking glasses ________. A. can improve people’s sleep quality B. is popular among young people C. make people see things far away clearly D. may have no clear advantage in the short term 38. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text? A. The researchers did 8 tests. B. The tests remained the same in length. C. There were 156 people taking part in the tests in total. D. Further research on the glasses is needed to learn more. 39. According to the last paragraph, the experts suggest ________. A. using screens less. B. taking screen breaks. C changing glasses often. D. buying special glasses. 40. Which can be the best title for the text? A. Can screen time influence our eye health? B. How can we avoid the harm of blue light? C. Where does blue light come from? D. May blue light blocking glasses not actually help? Summer is here. It’s the sugar for us to taste, and the painting for us to enjoy. For most people, painting is a kind of art and difficult to understand. A. Luckily, more and more young people like it B. It’s strange that fewer people enjoy eating. C. However, it’s a pity that this folk art is dying recently. D. Some of the tests were finished in one day while others even lasted five weeks. And the researchers said further research in more groups of people is needed to better learn about any other possible effects. Dr. Sumeer Singh, a researcher in the Downie Lab, said more studies should be done to find out whether the results change when different groups of people use different types of lenses, advising for future research.
