Have you ever imagined a farm where machines do most of the work? Thanks to high technology, farming is changing in amazing ways. Here’s how smart farming works.
The key to smart farming is special tools and machines. Smart machines in the soil check how much water and nutrients (营养物) the plants need, telling farmers the best time to water or add nutrients. Flying machines go over the fields, taking pictures to find sick plants early. Smart computers in greenhouses change heat and light by themselves, helping vegetables grow faster.
However, smart farming isn’t without challenges. High-tech machines cost a lot of money. Many small farms can’t afford (买得起) them. Farmers also need to learn how to use these machines. In places with bad internet (互联网), the smart tools might not work well.
China is already doing well in this area. In Xinjiang, cotton farms use flying machines to water plants, saving half the water compared to old ways. In Shandong, farmers pick fruits by using smart machines, which work fast and never get tired.
As you can see, high technology is so widely used in farming. We grow more food with less water and land by using smart tools. Will smart machines one day take the place of farmers completely in the future? Probably not—but they’ll certainly make farming easier and greener!
4. What do flying machines do in smart farming?
A. They check water and nutrients in the soil.
B. They change heat and light in greenhouses.
C. They take pictures to find sick plants early.
5. Which of the following is a challenge of smart farming?
A. It helps vegetables grow faster.
B. It saves half the water.
C. It costs a lot of money.
6. What’s the best structure of this passage?
A. B. C.
7. What can we infer (推断) from the passage?

Born in 1958, in south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Huang Danian had an interest in geophysics from an early age. He spent his whole life on science, making many sacrifices (牺牲) along the way and eventually went to the United Kingdom for further study in 1993.
In 2008, China launched a national project calling for the world’s top talents named the Thousand-Talent Program (千人计划). It encouraged overseas Chinese and foreign professionals to work in China, and Huang decided this was his calling. He quit his job in the UK, sold his property and belongings and returned home.
Huang was invited to be the chief scientist of China’s biggest deep-Earth exploration program at Jilin University in Changchun, in northeast China. The program aimed to install (安装) high-tech cameras on planes, ships and satellites, which would enable them to see through the Earth’s crust (地壳). Although China has some advantages in underground exploration and undersea detection, it was well behind the rest of the world in this area.
Huang got straight down to it and his efforts soon paid off. China narrowed the gap with the developed countries in getting correct data on deep-Earth exploration. Thanks to a number of inspiring scientists, such as Huang, China is now becoming a leading power in this technology.
Huang died of cancer at the age of 58 in winter. A bright star in the world of science had fallen, leaving the scientific world in huge sadness. It’s clear that the world will be quite different in the year 2045. But what changes might we see? It’s pretty likely that robots and AI technology will bring great changes to jobs. Also, self-driving and flying cars will come into our daily life, making our lives easier. Scientists have even bigger ideas in a video called To the Future.
Dr. Juraz believes we might be able to control things around us simply with our thoughts. “Imagine that you could use simple devices (设备) to connect to your mind and control things around you simply by thinking about it.” Juraz says. According to him, scientists are working on the technologies that can make this happen. They’ve made some progress already.
The future has more than just that. Steven says that we’ll be able to create very strong but light things. New materials will change the way we build everything from cars to spacecraft. Imagine cars are safer, more energy-saving, and able to carry heavier things. Lighter spacecraft could mean great cuts in the cost and make more exploration goals possible.
Panny believes that our relationship with machines will change. She says, “I think one day we can tell a machine what to do with just a button (按钮) or a few simple words.” For example, pilots have to follow many steps for a plane to take off. But in 2045, according to Panny, “Prepare for taking off,” and the computer will do the rest. Or maybe, we won’t even need pilots.
These are just a few of the many possible changes that 2045 might bring. It makes us wonder what other surprises the future holds. Will there be new forms of energy that change our lives?
12. What is likely to bring great changes to jobs in 2045?
A. The development of new materials.
B. Robots and AI technology.
C. The change in our relationship with machines.
13. According to Dr. Juraz, what might we be able to do in 2045?
A. Control things around us with our hands.
B. Use complex (复杂的) devices to connect to our minds.
C. Control things around us just by thinking.
14. How does Panny explain her idea?
A. By telling a story. B. By giving an example. C. By making comparisons.
15. What will the writer probably write about after the last paragraph?
A. Many possible changes. B. New forms of energy. C. New wonders in 2045.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. B 15. B

A. There won’t be any food shortage.
B. More high-tech machines will be used in farming.
C. Smart machines will take the place of farmers completely.
C
During his last days in hospital, Huang continued to answer his students’ questions, assign work and write recommendation letters for his colleagues. But as some of his students said, Huang’s passing was not a good-bye, as his spirit and words would always be with them.
8. Why did Huang Danian return to China?
A. He wanted to receive further study.
B. He hoped to serve his country.
C. He got an invitation to visit Jilin University.
9. What can we know about Huang’s work at Jilin University?
A. He invented cameras for underground animals.
B. He worked as the program’s chief scientist.
C. He took the job mainly for high pay.
10. What’s the meaning of the underlined phrase in para.4?
A. Made the difference smaller.
B. Broke all old rules.
C. Started a new research.
11. What’s the best title of the text?
A. A new way to explore deep seas.
B. China’s plan for space satellites.
C. Huang Danian: A devoted (有贡献的) scientist.
D
