Newton’s Laws (定律) of Motion
Have you ever heard of Newton’s Laws of Motion? These three laws, or principles, explain how things move.
Law 1: An object at rest stays at rest. A moving object keeps moving. Objects continue doing what they’re doing unless a stronger force acts on them.
Here, the stronger force is the wall. It stops the truck but not the boxes, so they keep moving backward.
Law 2: It takes more force to move a heavy object than to move a lighter object. Newton came up with a scientific formula (公式) to explain this: Force= Mass × Acceleration.
Large weights with a lot of mass (质量) require more force to lift than smaller, lighter weights do.
Law 3: For every force, there is an equal (相等的) reaction in the opposite direction.
Air from an untied balloon rushes out in one direction. As the air escapes, it pushes the balloon in the opposite direction.
1. The drawing for Law 1. shows that the ________.
A. boxes are a stronger force than the truck
B. truck stays at rest, but the boxes do not
C. wall acts on the truck but not the boxes
2. How do the italicized captions (斜体的说明文字) help you understand the drawings?
A. They tell why the law could be wrong.
B. They provide the scientific explanation of Newton’s laws.
C. They explain what is happening in the drawing.
3. Which is not a way that the drawings help you understand Newton’s Laws of Motion?
A. They provide real-life examples of the laws at work.
B. They help you see how the laws work.
C. They provide the scientific formula for each of Newton’s laws.
4. The drawings and captions for Law 2 are designed to help you understand that ________.
A. adults are stronger than children
B. more force is required to move an object that has greater mass
C. the larger an object’s size, the greater its mass
5. How did the columns (专栏) used to organize the text help you understand the information?
A. They made it easier to see how the words and pictures for each law went together.
B. They showed objects move more quickly when pulled by a string (线) or chain (链).
C. They described parts of the drawing.

Which Button (按钮) Do I Press?
My brother Micha’s high school graduation was almost over, and I was still fumbling with (笨手笨脚地做) my new digital camera. I had gotten it for my birthday, but I had never read the directions. That’s why I spent most of the ceremony trying to find out how to turn the camera on. And when I finally did, all I saw on the screen were a bunch (串) of mysterious icons (图标).
Soon the headmaster was calling students’ names. Each graduate walked happily across the stage to get his or her diploma (学位证书). It was almost Micha’s turn! I started pressing buttons at random (随便地) until the camera beeped (嘟嘟响). Had I taken a picture? There was no time to check because the headmaster called Micha’s name. I looked very carefully through the camera’s viewfinder.
Micha walked with confidence to the headmaster, smiling ear to ear. Then, suddenly, he did the most amazing thing. He jumped into the air and did a complete flip (空翻)! When he landed, the crowd went crazy. I tried to take a picture, but the camera just beeped again, like it was making fun of me.
After the ceremony, I handed the camera to Micha and apologized (道歉) for being such a terrible photographer. “What are you talking about, Sasha?” he said excitedly. “You got the whole thing on video!”
I must have hit the button for video instead of photo. Micha ended up posting the clip (剪辑) on the Internet for our friends and family to see, and everyone keeps congratulating me on my fine camera work. Now, if only I could find out which button I pressed.
6. At the beginning of the passage, Sasha fumbles with the camera’s buttons because she is ______.
A. nervous about her brother’s graduation

8. What happens as a result of Sasha recording a video instead of taking a photo?
A. Sasha feels guilty about what she has done.
B. Micha can share a happy moment with friends.
C. Micha shouts at Sasha for being unprepared.
9. Why do people congratulate Sasha at the end of the passage?
A. Because she graduated from school.
B. Because she won a photography prize.
C. Because they admire the video she took.
10. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. People think Micha’s flip was Sasha’s idea.
B. Sasha is not interested in the graduation.
C. Sasha isn’t sure how the video is recorded at the end of the story.

What Mosquitoes (蚊子) Like About You
Do you ever feel like mosquitoes single you out in a crowd? Do you think your blood must be extra delicious because you’re the one who always gets bitten (咬) when no one else does? It shows that mosquitoes do have preferences, but it isn’t tasty blood that attracts (吸引) them to their target (目标). It’s all about how easy a person is to find. Mosquito expert Susan Paskewitz explains that “the main things are how you smell and how warm you are.”
Two scents (气味) that are particularly attractive (有吸引力的) to mosquitoes are carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) and lactic acid (乳酸). Both of these chemicals are produced when you-breathe or sweat (出汗). So, when you exercise, mosquitoes may run after you. That’s because exercising causes your muscles (肌肉) to build up lactic acid. Also, your sweat sends out carbon dioxide, and your body temperature increases. But not everyone produces carbon dioxide and lactic acid at the same rate. Some people produce higher levels, so they are more likely (可能的) to attract mosquitoes.
Even your sense of style can influence whether or not you get bitten: Mosquitoes use color to decide where to land, and they prefer dark colors. Wearing a black or dark blue T-shirt is a good way to turn yourself into a giant target for mosquitoes. Wear white, and they might fly right by.
11. Which of the following is most likely to cause a mosquito to find and bite you?
A. The way you look. B. The way you taste. C. The way you smell.
12. The writer would probably agree that a reasonable way to avoid mosquito bites is to ______.
A. avoid all kinds of exercise
B. wear light-colored clothing
C. try to increase your lactic acid levels
13. Which of the following is not a reason that mosquitoes are attracted to people who have just exercised?
A Their body temperature is higher than normal.
B. They produce higher levels of carbon dioxide.
C. Their blood sugar level increases.
14. The writer quotes (引述) mosquito expert Susan Paskewitz in order to ______.
A. explain what attracts mosquitoes
B. show that mosquitoes like blood
C. support the idea that mosquitoes spread deadly diseases
15. What information is not given as evidence (证据) of which senses mosquitoes use to find their target according to the article?
A. Mosquitoes use color to decide where they land, which means they use sight.
B. Mosquitoes are attracted to the scents of certain chemicals, which means they use their sense of smell.
C. Mosquitoes move after people who exercise, which means they feel the temperature.

“Hold that pose (姿势)!” said Dante, taking a photo of his mother.
Dante’s mom looked up in surprise and spilled (溅出) some of the orange juice she ____34____ (pour). “Dante, what are you doing?” she asked.
“It’s a project I’m doing for school,” Dante explained. “For the next two days, I’m going to keep a photo diary of my life.”
Mrs. Carter smiled at her son. “It sounds interesting,” she said. “I’m just not sure that a picture of me in my pajamas (睡衣) pouring orange juice at 7 o’clock in the morning is the ____35____ (interest) part of your day.”
“I’m not supposed to leave anything out” replied Dante. “It doesn’t really matter if it’s interesting. This diary should be a realistic narrative (叙述) of my day. You and breakfast are both a part of my day, so I wanted to make sure they ____36____ (record) on film.”
Mrs. Carter asked, “What will you do with your photographs when you’re done? Do you have to present them to your class?”
“I’m going to display the photos on a piece of poster board in the order that things happen,” Dante said. “Then, the class ____37____ (try) to write a brief summary (总结) of my day based on the pictures I took.”
“Do your dad and brother know about your photo diary project?” asked Mrs. Carter. “You might want to give them a bit of advance (提前) warning ____38____ they’re going to be part of it.”
Just then, Wesley came down the stairs into the kitchen. He was carrying a basketball under one arm and took a piece of bread as he sat down at the table.
“Wesley,” said Dante, “I ____39____ (do) a photo diary for school.”
Wesley smiled directly at the camera as Dante took the photo. Mrs. Carter laughed. “I forgot who I was talking about here,” she said, “I guess no ____40____ (explain) is necessary for your brother, Dante,” she said.
“I don’t blame him for wanting to get a picture of me,” said Wesley. “When I make it into the NBA, those pictures will probably be pretty valuable,” he joked.
Dante laughed. “There are some things you just can’t record in pictures,” he said. He took his dishes to the sink (水池) and then managed to get a picture of his dad adjusting his tie as he walked into the kitchen.
“____41____ you ________ (take) a picture of me? Am I famous?” asked Mr. Carter.
“Wait a minute,” said Dante. “But as a part of my photo diary, you will be with the members of Ms. Rutherford’s class.”

A Stinging (刺痛) Surprise
Sophie, Miles, and Mr. Taylor walked along the beach.
“Quick, kids, look at the seagull (海鸥)!” shouted Mr. Taylor. He pointed towards a gull that had just swooped down (俯冲) and pulled a large fish from the water.
“I can’t believe that a bird that size can carry such a...ouch! Dad, help! I think I stepped on something!” Miles jumped on one foot, trying to shake the stinging feeling from his other foot. Mr. Taylor reached him quickly and helped Miles take a seat on the warm sand.
“I think that’s what you stepped on,” said Sophie, pointing to a sand-covered, jelly-like blob (果冻状斑点) on the beach. “Is it a jellyfish (水母), Dad?”
Mr. Taylor nodded. Then, he looked at Miles. “You’re all right, Miles,” he said. He turned to Sophie. “Do you see that lifeguard tower down the beach?” he asked. Sophie nodded. “Can you run over there and tell the lifeguard that we think your brother was stung (叮) by a jellyfish?”
Sophie nodded and headed for the tower. Meanwhile, Mr. Taylor emptied the bucket (桶) of seashells (贝壳) and used it to gently wash the sand from Miles’s foot with seawater.
“How does that feel?” he asked Miles.
“About the same,” replied Miles. “It burns and stings.”
In just a few minutes, Sophie returned with the lifeguard.
He opened a small red and white box and took some rubbing alcohol (医用酒精). “First, we’re going to clean the area with a bit of alcohol,” he began. “Vinegar (酷) works too, if you’re ever stung again.”
“Now what are you going to put on it?” asked Sophie.
“Well it might sound funny, but I’m making a paste (糊状物) using meat tenderizer (嫩肉剂) and water.” He smeared (涂上) the paste on the heel of Miles’s foot. “Meat tenderizer is an enzyme (酶) that breaks down protein (蛋白质). Jellyfish poison (毒物) is a protein, so it works on the poison the same way it does on meat.”
“It actually feels better already,” said Miles in surprise.
The lifeguard smiled. “If you don’t have any meat tenderizer at home, a paste made of baking soda (小苏打) and water will also soothe (缓和) it. If the area becomes any more irritated (刺激) in the next couple of hours, I’d suggest seeing a doctor. Otherwise, you’ll probably be feeling much better by morning.”
“Thank you for all your help,” said Mr. Taylor, shaking the lifeguard’s hand. “Come on, Miles. This is probably the last piggyback ride you’re going to get before you get taller than me!”
48. If you don’t have alcohol and meat tenderizer at home, what else can you use to treat a jellyfish sting?

“Well, it might sound funny, but I’m making a paste (糊状物) using meat tenderizer (嫩肉剂) and water.” He smeared (涂上) the paste on the heel of Miles’s foot.
