A few years ago, I was leaving the dog shelter where I worked only to find a baby goat at the end of the driveway. The shelter’s owners are known as animal rescuers, and I figured someone had abandoned him over the fence. The kid was visibly nervous but stood perfectly still as I approached.
I’m an animal lover and I’ve brought home dogs, cats, horses, and chickens, but never a goat. The tiny kid was too adorable to resist. I named him Quincy, and with the help of some experienced friends, bottle-fed him in my bathroom.
Quincy proved to be quite sharp-witted. When he was about a week old, I knocked on the bathroom floor and said “lie down”. I was astonished when he dropped down. I was even more amazed when he did it three times in a row.
A quick study! Quincy learned to lie down, bow, and turn in a circle in no time. He is house-trained, jumps in the back of my SUV when I say “load up”, and spends the day wandering with my dogs, whom he considers his fellow goats. He knows the name of everything I feed him, and even joins us for trips to the dog park.
I love to train animals and often take my dogs to shows where they can perform their tricks. Quincy did his first show when he was just six weeks old. He knew only a few tricks then, but he did them perfectly and never misbehaved or got nervous in front of the crowd.
Now he has a whole inventory(清单): he’ll come when called, walk on a string, wave, smile for the camera (“Say cheese!”), and more. Quincy and my dogs perform regularly at schools, nursing homes, and charity events. Quincy can even “read” his tricks off cards, which always earns the most applause.
It’s hard to believe that the baby goat nobody wanted turned out to be one of the smartest and most good-natured animals I’ve ever had. He’s by far the sharpest of my bunch—just don’t tell the dogs!
24. Why did the author decide to adopt the goat?
A. It touched his heart. B. He could only find a goat.
C. A goat was always his favorite. D. Some experienced friends convinced him.
25. What does the underlined word in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Brave. B. Gentle. C. Innocent. D. Intelligent.
26. How does the author present the baby goat’s ability?
A. By citing figures. B. By listing examples.
C. By making a comparison. D. By drawing a diagram.
27. Which words can best describe the author?
A. Generous and modest. B. Cautious and smart.
C. Humorous and warm-hearted. D. Optimistic and creative.

If you aspire to master a new language, consider the intriguing suggestion from Swansea University scholars to “sleep on it”. These researchers are probing the nexus of sleep patterns, the act of dreaming, and the critical process of memory consolidation — the mechanism by which memories are more firmly embedded in the brain. A forthcoming study in the Journal of Sleep Research scrutinizes the interplay between sleep and the perceived significance of information on its memorability. Participants were slumbered in a state-of-the-art laboratory setting, with their cerebral activity under constant surveillance. The subjects, native English speakers who had just arrived in Wales, were tasked with committing Welsh vocabulary to memory and were subsequently tested after a 12-hour interval. One cohort was required to retain the information while awake, whereas the other group was permitted to sleep in the lab. Those who availed themselves of sleep demonstrated superior performance in the vocabulary assessment, and an enhanced interest in the Welsh language further bolstered their results. Parallel studies conducted in the sleep lab, showcased at the British Science Festival, endeavor to discern whether dreams are merely a byproduct of other nocturnal activities. To decode the timing and substance of dreams, the research team examined the dreams recounted by participants in their own narratives, immediately post-awakening. This investigation revealed that the probability of dream occurrence is notably elevated—approximately 80 percent during REM sleep. This phase of the sleep cycle, distinguished by swift ocular movements, is presumed to significantly contribute to the consolidation of memories. The electrical activity within the brain fluctuates markedly across various sleep stages, a factor that aided researchers in gauging the duration and quality of sleep, enabling them to rouse participants at specific junctures in the sleep cycle. The findings indicate that daytime experiences are more prone to crystallize into dreams with a one-day lag and are likely to reoccur repeatedly after an interval of five to seven nights. This phenomenon has been termed the “dream-lag effect”.
28. What was the primary objective of the study conducted by Swansea University scholars?
A. To understand the effect of sleep on physical health.
B. To investigate the relationship between sleep and language learning.
C. To determine the impact of dreams on creativity.
D. To study the role of REM sleep in memory consolidation.
29. How was the experiment conducted in the sleep lab?
A. Participants were asked to learn Welsh vocabulary and then were tested after 24 hours.
B. Participants were monitored for their brain activity while they were awake.
C. Participants were tested on their Welsh vocabulary immediately after learning.
D. Participants were tested on their Welsh vocabulary after a 12-hour interval, with one group sleeping and the other remaining awake.
30. What was the term used to describe the phenomenon where daytime experiences turn into dreams after a one-day lag?
A. The “sleep-lag effect”.
B. The “dream-lag effect”.
C. The “REM effect”.
D. The “consolidation effect”.
31. What was the significant finding regarding the timing and substance of dreams?
A. Dreams are most likely to occur during non-REM sleep.
B. Dreams are recounted immediately after waking up.
C. The probability of dream occurrence is notably elevated during REM sleep.
D. Dreams are a byproduct of daytime activities and are immediately forgotten.
【答案】28. B 29. D 30. B 31. C

A smiley face is not always just a smiley face. Behind the yellow, wide-eyed emoji’s smile is an intergenerational minefield. For many teenagers and 20-somethings, a smiley face popping up in a text or email is seen as something different.
HafeezatBishi, 21, started an internship(实习) at a Brooklyn digital media firm. She was surprised to be greeted by her co-workers with a bright smiley face. For Bishi, the welcome seemed dismissive and she sees the emoji as conveying a kind of side-eye smile.
The rise of the use of emojis at work, especially between remote teams during the pandemic, has created more misunderstandings than ever. People over 30 tend to use emojis to express what the images always did, but younger digital natives may use them to convey ironic meanings, or use them as shorthand for an entirely different thought. For instance, the skull and crossbones means death or danger to many adults, while many younger people say that to them it signifies laughing extremely hard-as in “I’m laughing so hard that I’m dying.”
Charlie Nelson Keever, a 31-year-old lawyer in the San Francisco Bay Area, spends a lot of time analyzing social media accounts to piece together legal cases. It was while researching narratives and timelines on a case that it dawned on her that young people don’t use smiley faces to mean they are smiling.
She quizzed a Gen Z friend and was confused by the undertones which some emojis carry for that generation. On its face, the cowboy, a grinning emoji wearing a hat, can signify a special brand of quirky, giggly happiness. But for many in Gen Z, it means the sender is putting on a front, smiling on the outside while dying on the inside.
Keever feels she should have her finger on the pulse of how people communicate on the Internet. “There’s nothing that makes you feel older than googling what an emoji means, ”she said.
32. How did Bishi understand the smiley face from her co-workers?
A. An insincere greeting. B. A dynamic greeting.
C. An indifferent greeting. D. A genuine greeting.
33. What do we learn from paragraph 3?
A. Young people use skull and crossbones to convey death to adults.
B. The pandemic has largely brought about the increasing use of emojis.
C. Emojis are often used to express ironic thoughts by older people.
D. Misunderstandings of emojis may occur due to the intergenerational gap.
34. What does the underlined word “undertone” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. answer B. implication C. image D. signal
35. Why does Keever want to have her finger on the pulse of how people communicate?
A. To catch up with the latest fashion pulse.
B. To line up with what people chat online.
C. To put up with feeling old when googling emojis.
D. To keep up with the way digital natives communicate.
【答案】32. A 33. D 34. B 35. D
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章举例说明了不同年代的人对表情符号的理解不同,因此容易造成一些误解。
32. 细节理解题。根据第二段“For Bishi, the welcome seemed dismissive and she sees the emoji as conveying a kind of side-eye smile.(对Bishi来说,这种欢迎似乎是轻蔑的,她认为表情符号传达了一种侧眼微笑)”可知,Bishi认为同事的笑脸是不真诚的问候。故选A。
33. 细节理解题。根据第三段“People over 30 tend to use emojis to express what the images always did, but younger digital natives may use them to convey ironic meanings, or use them as shorthand for an entirely different thought. For instance, the skull and crossbones means death or danger to many adults, while many younger people say that to them it signifies laughing extremely hard-as in “I’m laughing so hard that I’m dying.”(30岁以上的人倾向于用表情符号来表达图片的含义,但年轻的数字原住民可能会用它们来表达讽刺的意思,或者用它们来表达完全不同的想法。例如,对许多成年人来说,头骨和交叉的骨头意味着死亡或危险,而许多年轻人说,对他们来说,这意味着笑得非常厉害——就像“我快要笑死了。”)”可知,代际差异可能导致对表情符号的误解。故选D。
34. 词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“She quizzed a Gen Z friend and was confused by the”以及后文“On its face, the cowboy, a grinning emoji wearing a hat, can signify a special brand of quirky, giggly happiness. But for many in Gen Z, it means the sender is putting on a front, smiling on the outside while dying on the inside.(在它的脸上,一个戴着帽子咧嘴笑着的牛仔表情符号,可以象征一种特殊的、古怪的、傻笑的幸福。但对许多Z世代的人来说,这意味着寄件人是在装样子,外表微笑,内心死亡)”可知,表情符号存在潜在的其他含义,即她问了一个Z世代的朋友,被一些Z世代的表情符号所包含的潜在含义所迷惑。故划线词意思是“暗指,暗示”。故选B。
35. 细节理解题。根据最后一段“Keever feels she should have her finger on the pulse of how people communicate on the Internet. “There’s nothing that makes you feel older than googling what an emoji means, ”she said.( Keever觉得她应该掌握人们如何在互联网上交流的脉搏。“没有什么比在谷歌上搜索表情符号的含义更让人觉得自己老了,”她说)”可知,Keever 想要掌握人们如何沟通的脉搏以跟上数字原生代的交流方式。故选D。

Campus loan generally refers to a private loan given to a college student on the campus. Internet lenders, most of whom are loan sharks(高利贷者), offer such loans to students who need the money to meet their college and other expenses. 36 But these loans come with high interest and often with collateral security(抵押担保), which has included naked photographs of female students. Not being mature enough to read the trap attached to such loans, many students have fallen prey to the loan sharks.
37 In that case, college students should first learn to recognize the dangers. They should realize that by applying for an “internet loan”, they themselves are leaking their personal information, including their national ID and student ID card numbers and bank details.
38 For example, they may trick them into signing a contract(合同) for a huge loan, but lending them only a small amount.
In order to avoid the dangers, the students should limit their consumption to what they really need, increase their financial knowledge and learn how to protect themselves using legal means.
To begin with, before applying for a loan, the students should carefully compare the financial service information and the extra fees different internet lenders charge on loans.
39 More important, they should analyze the actual interest and the fine for not paying the interest on time, and properly keep the loan certificate.
Also, when the students are threatened with physical violence to repay the loan, they should record the conversation and report it to the police in time. 40
Moreover, the students should learn to protect their privacy. And they should avoid the misuse of their personal information by other people to avoid getting involved in financial crimes.
A. Campus loan is in essence a private loan.
B. Campus loans come with many, hidden legal risks.
C. Some internet lenders even promote so-called job-hunting loan.
D. Besides, some internet lenders use loan tricks to cheat the students.
E. These loans are popular due to their easy application and approval.
F. This way, those issuing such threats can be held responsible for their actions.
G. They should also carefully read and understand the contract before signing it.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My mother believed in using things up. Last year, our cornfield had a bad harvest because birds feasted on the crops. It was probably then that Mom’s frugality became even more extraordinary. She began keeping everything that seemed useless in the attic-worn-out clothes, old sheets, broken umbrellas, and some other old items. Mom’s favorite saying was “waste not, want not.” My brother Josh and I weren’t sure what that meant until the Affair of the Scarecrow, which, as it later became known, left alasting impression on us.
The story began with a pretty hat that Mom received as a gift to protect her from thesun. However, Josh and I could see that Mom’s frugal nature and fashion sense were in battle. Mom really didn’t want to get rid of the hat -- it was new and had a lot of use left in it -- but neither could she stand wearing it. She tried to take off the fancy decorations, but they were stuck on tight. She’d have to find some other solution.
Josh and I watched as Mom headed upstairs to the attic with the hat. “Waste not, want not,” she called back down. We heard boxes being moved around. Moments later, Mom leaned out, holding a flour bag full of straw, and with a mysterious smile, she placed the hat on it.
“What is that for?” I asked, confused. “A scarecrow!” Mom exclaimed. “But not a good one yet. It needs a strong body to stand firm in the field,” she said with a frown. “And it doesn’t look scary enough,” Josh remarked. I had to admit that Josh, though younger than I was, could sometimes be more imaginative. Josh and I turned to each other, searching for a good idea. Soon enough, Josh’s eyes lit up with inspiration.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1: “Come with me!” Josh called out.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: In the days that followed, the scarecrow stood tall.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Come with me! Josh called out. The next instant, he raced upstairs with lightning speed. I hurried to follow him into the attic, where we began a thorough search. Mom was amused by our excitement when we found the broken umbrellas and used them as the backbone of the scarecrow. After that, we sorted out some old sheets and tied them on. The scarecrow now looked even scarier. We dragged our creation to the cornfield and planted it firmly in the mud, our hearts full of hope.
In the days that followed, the scarecrow stood tall. Serving as a silent guardian, it successfully scared the birds away. Under its watchful eyes, our cornfield flourished this year. To our amazement, Mom’s useless things from the attic had come together to create something extraordinary. As we enjoyed a good harvest, her favorite saying “waste not, want not” echoed in our hearts. The “Affair of the Scarecrow” has taught us the value of creatively transforming seemingly useless items into treasure, making us aware that frugality is a good quality after all.
