专题10 读后续写 ( 地 城 考点 01 家人和亲人 ) Passage 1 (2023-2024学年高二下·江苏宿迁·期末) “Maya, do you know what day it is today?” Ali asked. Maya, absorbed in her homework, replied, “It’s the 5th of December.” Then suddenly she exclaimed, “Ali, it’s Daddy’s birthday today!” “That’s exactly what I was about to tell you,” Ali responded with excitement. “How could we forget such a special day? How careless of us!” Maya blamed herself. “Maya, we haven’t planned anything yet. We don’t have much time!” Ali regretted. “It’s never too late, we still have time until dinner,” Maya comforted him. Both of them were filled with determination to make their dad’s birthday memorable. They decided to gather some funds and remembered they had been saving their pocket money to buy comic books. However, even after pooling their money, they realized it wasn’t enough. “Oh no, we can’t even afford a decent chocolate cake with this amount, let alone decorations,” Maya sighed in disappointment. “But remember sister, Daddy likes simplicity, so we should make it as simple as we can. Let’s decorate the room with balloons only and simply order creamy pasta, Daddy’s favourite,” Ali expressed his thoughts. “Hmm ... you are right. I am thinking of baking the cake ourselves,” added Maya. “Now let’s see what’s in the fridge and start working on our project for today.” That evening, their parents had to attend a tea party, leaving the kids with ample time to experiment in the kitchen. Maya felt a bit nervous, but Ali encouraged her. “Dear sister, have confidence in yourself. This is our last option, and we don’t have any other choice. Trust me, baking a cake isn’t as difficult as it seems only if we are determined to.” With Ali’s motivation, they started the task like scientists in a lab. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ As they just finished decorating the room, the doorbell rang. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 With Ali’s motivation, they started the task like scientists in a lab. They surfed the Internet and found the recipes for cake. Having prepared the necessary ingredients: eggs, sugar, milk, oil, baking powder, light cream and so on, they started according to the procedures. Eventually they made it. After placing the cake in the oven, they cleaned up the kitchen. Nearly 30 minutes later, the cake emerged from the oven, and they both shouted with joy, “We did it!” Overcome with excitement, they got down to decorating the room with the balloons. As they just finished decorating the room, the doorbell rang. Maya and Ali opened the door. Upon seeing their parents, the kids hummed the birthday song together. Knowing the birthday cake was made by themselves, his father gave them each a bear hug, saying “Thank you my sweeties. What a big surprise.” It became a memorable day. Later that night, Maya shared a lesson with Ali, “Sometimes, it’s only the first step that makes us afraid. Once we have a firm belief in ourselves, everything will become a piece of cake.” 词汇激活 行为类 ①开始:start/commence ②大声叫:shout/call out/exclaim ③给予某人一个熊抱:give sb. a bear hug/give sb. a bear embrace 情绪类 ①开心:joy/delight ②兴奋:excitement/exhilaration 【点睛】[高分句型1] Having prepared the necessary ingredients: eggs, sugar, milk, oil, baking powder, light cream and so on, they started according to the procedures. He promised to do it when he got back from Kim's house. However, I demanded that he not leave the house until he finished writing a note to everyone he came in contact with during the job interview. “Even the receptionist who was rude to me?” Jon asked with a confused expression. “Especially her!” Jon was home on Christmas break from college and had just finished interviewing with his first-choice company in Cleveland, Ohio. It was a rare opportunity considering that jobs were in short supply. The power of a thank-you note is something I drilled into my boy from the time he was old enough to hold a pencil. It didn't matter if it was for a birthday, Christmas or graduation. Every gift had to be acknowledged with sincere gratitude within twenty-four hours. Growing up, my mom was a stickler for thank-you notes. But she phrased it in such a way that it came across not as a threat but as a privilege. She'd say, “Your words of sincere gratitude have the power to change someone's life for the better—even if it's just for a moment.” Her advice changed my life, and it was my hope that it would change Jon's life as well. After an hour, Jon emerged from his room and handed over eight thank-you notes. To my delight, they were all sincere and heartfelt, even the one to the receptionist who had been less than friendly. Before Jon left to visit Kim, he turned to me and announced that he was pretty sure a thank-you note to the CEO or the receptionist wasn't going to land him the job. With a smile, I told him to wait and see. Jon was twenty-one years old, and I felt foolish telling a grown man what to do, but I also didn't want him living in our basement for the rest of his life! A week later, Jon received a call from the company. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The next day after work, I found a thank-you note on my bedside table. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 A week later, Jon received a call from the company. Shifting uneasily in his chair, he picked up the phone. “Yes, this is Jon,” he said, trying to keep his voice steady. I watched him, my heart pounding. As he continued to speak, his face lit up with an excited smile. When he hung up the phone, he turned to me, eyes shining. He told me that they were really impressed with his interview, but what really stood out were the thank-you notes. The CEO mentioned that he was touched by the notes and appreciated the effort Jon put into thanking everyone, including the receptionist. I felt a rush of pride and relief. I knew it would work. The next day after work, I found a thank-you note on my bedside table. Surprised, I picked it up, unfolded it, and was greeted with Jon’s familiar handwriting. It was a thank-you note from Jon. He thanked me for pushing him to do his best and for teaching him the importance of gratitude, which had truly changed his life. As I read the note, tears welled up in my eyes. I had always believed in the power of gratitude and a thank-you note, but seeing it come full circle like this was more rewarding than I could have ever imagined. Jon was not only succeeding in his career but also growing into a thoughtful and compassionate man. And that was the greatest gift of all. 词汇激活 行为类 ①挪动:shift/move ②提及:mention/refer to ③打开:unfold/open 情绪类 ①激动的:excited/exhilarated ②感到骄傲:feel a rush of pride/feel extremely proud 【点睛】[高分句型1]. I realized that my four-year-old sister, Tammy, was staring down at me. I struggled to push her off me as she bounced on my legs. She screamed, and then ran out of my room. It was as if Tammy never did anything wrong. If Tammy got angry, Mom would say she was trying to get her point across. When Tammy broke a plate, Dad said she was just  “helping” me empty the dishwasher. When Tammy scribbled (乱涂乱画) all over the wall, instead of scolding her, my parents chuckled and said, “She’s turning into an artist just like you, Tara.” We were flying to Utah to visit my grandma for the Fourth of July. Every year I draw Grandma a picture for her birthday, but I sighed as I considered about what picture I should draw this time. When we walked off the plane, I was relieved to see the smiling face of my grandma. We raced over to her. “Hi, sweetheart.” Grandma got down on one knee to hug Tammy and then swung her in the air. Tammy screamed with laughter. Then Grandma hugged me. “It’s so good to see you too,  Tara.” After six hours of flight, I was exhausted—six hours of listening to Tammy scream with delight again and again and again. I wanted to be alone, so I went outside with my sketchbook and colored pencils. Looking at the scenery, I felt inspired to work on Grandma’s drawing. As I admired the shading on the mountains and the swirls of the sunset, I smiled to myself and thought, this is the best picture I have ever made. Before I finished my picture, Mom was calling me inside for dinner. When I walked back into the room, my heart stopped. Tammy was lying on the bed, scribbling on a piece of paper. When Tammy saw me frozen in the doorway, she jumped from the bed. She ran over to me and grinned. “I drew you a picture.” she shouted. “Out!” I screamed angrily, and she ran out of the room. She shut the door and sat down next to me,“Tara,”she whispered,“I’m so sorry, I know you worked hard on it. Tammy is challenging sometimes, but your yelling at her doesn’t solve anything. ” It felt as if a dam inside of me broke. I signed and walked out of the room with my picture.  I gathered up the courage to walk over to Grandma. Grandma looked up at me, her eyes sparkling. I handed her the picture I had drawn, the one that Tammy had ruined. Grandma took it into her hands and said, “Oh, Tara, I love it!” She smiled at me. “Do you know why I love it so much? This picture represents the bond you and Tammy share. If you look closely at the picture, there was a faint picture of two girls smiling and holding hands. ”I watched Tammy from a distance. I had been so worried about not having the perfect fourth July vacation that I forgot about what mattered most. 大叫:yell at/scream at /shout at ②.解决:solve /handle/settle ③.画:draw/paint 情绪类 ①.抱歉的:sorry/regretful ②. With only one week and one assignment to go before the summer holiday, Truman knew that to secure the top spot, his final report had to shine. The topic was beehives (蜂巢), a subject that Mrs. Lawrence, his teacher, had emphasized the need for a unique perspective to earn an A+. Truman opened the door to find his four-year-old brother, Bryan, who sat on the floor in the living room with paper tubes all over the floor. Bryan called, “Truman, help me build a city!” With a sigh, Truman replied, “I’m sorry, Bryan, but I have to write a report about beehives.” Stepping carefully between the scattered tubes, he went into his room, deep in thought about his project. Shortly after, Bryan appeared at the door, his eyes sparkling (发亮).“Truman, I know where there’s a beehive,” he said. Truman followed Bryan to the garage where they found a real beehive hidden among the firewood. Bending down, he removed the beehive from the wood. As Truman examined it closely, he was fascinated by the hexagonal (六边形的) structure of each cell. “Why the hexagon?” he thought. After dinner, Truman did the dishes. He glanced at the clock. If he didn’t think of something soon, his chance to get an A+ would be slim. As Truman turned around, he stepped on something. He hadn’t seen Bryan play with paper tubes behind him. “Get your tubes out of here, Bryan!” Truman said angrily. Bryan ran into the living room, crying. Truman sighed and gathered the paper tubes. Suddenly, he found that they were arranged with one in the middle and surrounded by six others. They reminded Truman of the beehive. The center tube formed a hexagon, just like the cells of the hive. Truman tried to use different numbers of tubes to surround the center tube, and then Truman got the new angle. But what else did he need to accompany his report? Maybe a model beehive! Thinking about this, Truman rushed into the living room, his heart pounding. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Bryan smiled and began picking out his tubes. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Thinking about this, Truman rushed into the living room, his heart pounding. He threw his arms around his brother, his voice trembling with sincerity, “Bryan, I’m deeply sorry that I lost my temper. I never intended to hurt you. And from the bottom of my heart, I thank you.” He continued to tell his brother that these tubes had given him ideas, helping him find his perspective. Therefore, he can finally complete the report! “But,” Truman said, “I have to build a model beehive with these tubes. Can you help me?” “Well,” Bryan said hesitantly, with tears on his face. “You can help me glue them,” Truman offered. Bryan smiled and began picking out his tubes. Truman opened the drawer near the TV, grabbed a bottle of glue, and showed his brother how to stick the paper tubes. Working together, they made a model beehive. As they compared their creation to the real beehive in the garage, they agreed it was flawless. With his newfound focus, Truman completed his report well ahead of time, introducing a fresh perspective that fascinated his classmates. Mrs. Lawrence awarded him an A+ and praised his efforts in front of the entire class, leaving Truman feeling proud. 发脾气:lose one’s temper/get angry /fly into a temper ②.帮助:help /assist/aid ③.完成:complete/finish/accomplish 心理类 ①.遗憾的:sorry/regretful ②.迟疑地:hesitantly/uncertainly 【点睛】[高分句型1]. No matter how rotten I had been, I could tell Grandpa anything. My secrets were safe. Whenever there was a problem, he gave me the tools to fix it. I knew I would always find the best answer from him. He always understood. He loved me. I remember a time when a bunch of us were playing baseball in the field behind Mrs. Ferguson’s house. I hit one pitch just right and… slam! It was a home run that soared high and away, and ended up breaking Old Lady Ferguson’s kitchen window! We all ran! Walking home, my best friend, Tom, asked, "How will she ever know who did it? She’s blinder than a bat!” He had a point. I was afraid that Mrs. Ferguson would stay mad at me, so I ran. I didn’t know what she would do. I tried to calm down. However, my stomach was in knots. On the way home, I imagined that she was a mean witch (女巫) chasing me, and the further way I ran, the larger she grew… until finally she towered over the whole town, seeing my every move with an evil eye. Thoughts rushed through my mind. Would Mrs. Ferguson stay mad at me? Would she call police? Worse still, would she tell my parents. I couldn’t even imagine the disappointment on Mom and Dad’s face. They were hoping I would act honestly and in a responsible way. I decided to stop by Grandpa’s. I felt ashamed. I wanted to hide. I wanted to knock my head against a tree a thousand times and make the world just go away — as if punishing myself could undo things. But inside me a voice said: “I would tell everything to Grandpa.” “I was wrong,” I told him, with my head down. He must have known something was up by the expression on my face. He knew we had been warned many times about the dangers of playing where we shouldn’t. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Para 1: But he just listened while I continued talking. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Para 2: Hearing the decision, grandpa smiled. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 But he just listened while I continued talking. “I was wrong. It was always my choice. While sitting at his office desk, working on an important assignment. he heard his phone ring. “Mom's 100th birthday,” the reminder on his phone read. “Oh, how can I forget her birthday again?” Mark shook his head as he turned the reminder alarm off. “I can't keep disappointing her like this.” He quickly finished his work and left the office without wasting another minute. On his way, he stopped at a bakery and bought his mother's favorite cheesecake. “My mother turned 100 today!” he cheered, telling the shopkeeper how happy he was. He also bought her balloons and a few gifts. Excited to see her after a decade, Mark drove towards his mother's house. Mark finally arrived at her house after driving for hours, but the house did not look the same anymore. The lights inside were all turned off, and the fence was covered in wild vines (藤) . It seemed like no one had been living in the house. Worried for his elderly mother, Mark entered the house, carefully walked towards the switchboard in the hallway and turned the switches on. A thick layer of dust had settled on the furniture. As he slowly walked towards the kitchen, a wave of regret engulfed (吞噬) him. Every corner of the house reminded him of missed opportunities to bond with his mother, listen to her stories, and learn about her feelings. “Where did she go?” he wondered. My friend Ollie has lived with his grandmother, Abuela, since he was a baby. Abuela is the kindest, smartest, funniest person imaginable! On the morning of Mother's Day, I invited them to my house for a party. “I love any kind of party if there's a cake!” Ollie said. “Of course.” I chuckled, “I made a card for my mom, but I still want to find some present to go with it”. Ollie also wanted to buy roses for Abuela, but everything is so expensive at the flower store that he can barely afford a leaf! Just then, our neighbor, Mrs. Nishikawa who was watering her garden, waved and called, “Good morning, kiddos!” Ollie waved back. “Good morning, Mrs. Nishikawa! Your garden is always so pretty.” “Oy! It's a mess.” She groaned. “My back has been acting up, and I haven't weeded for days.” Ollie and I were eager to offer help. Half an hour later, both of us had a big pile of weeds. Mrs. Nishikawa smiled and said we could choose whatever flowers we liked for Mother's day bouquets (花束). We clipped, arranged, and wrapped everything in big sheets of sparkly paper and string. Ollie and I both said that these look just as good as the ones at the store and even better. As we headed back with flowers in arms, we came up with a plan. Nobody would think to look in my bedroom closet, a perfect place to hide these, except my two cats. It was a good idea that at the exact right time, we would shout “Surprise!” and amaze everybody. But you know perfect plans don't always work out perfectly. Everybody elegantly sipped tea and not-so-elegantly gobbled cake. Then we took turns saying things we loved and appreciated about Abuela and my mom. Right when they were chatting, Ollie and I snuck (溜走) off to get our surprise. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 “NO!” I yelled as soon as our cats dashed out of the bedroom. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “How can you get so beautiful flowers?” Abuela and my mom asked. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 “NO!” I yelled as soon as our cats dashed out of the bedroom. The sight that met my eyes was both amusing and a little heartbreaking. While our carefully crafted bouquets were now a chaotic blend of petals and stems scattered all over the floor, the cats were completely unaware of the mess they had caused. Ollie and I stood there, momentarily stunned, as our surprise was unveiled in the most unexpected way. The guests, including Abuela and my mom, quickly rose from their seats, trying to contain the playful cats and also attempting to rescue what was left of the bouquets. “How can you get so beautiful flowers?” Abuela and my mom asked. Ollie and I exchanged a knowing look before bursting into laughter. “Well, it's a funny surprise actually,” I began, recounting our story with Mrs. Nishikawa. Abuela and my mom couldn't help but join in our laughter, their eyes sparkling with amusement. “Tomorrow, I will tell Mrs. Nishikawa what happened to her flowers,” Ollie joked. As we all sat together, talking about the surprises, we knew that the true gift of Mother's Day was the love and laughter we shared as a family. 词汇激活 行为类 ①没意识到,不知道:be unaware of/ be ignorant of ②交换:exchange/ change for ③参加:join in / participate in 情绪类 ①突然大笑:burst into laughter /burst out laughing ②小心地:carefully / with caution 【点睛】[高分句型1]. Mum struggled to raise us kids on her own in our small community of New Westminster. BC. My Dad had died five years earlier. There was not much money, so we went on relief, now called social assistance. Looking back, I realize what Mum went through sending us kids to school. Every morning she would fold and put a new piece of cardboard in our shoes, which were worn out. When we got home, Mum would have “French Toast” — deep-fried bread — ready for us. Rent was twenty-five dollars a month, but Mum couldn’t pay it, and we knew we would be forced to leave right after Christmas. These were hard and sad years, but we never complained. Christmas was approaching, and we were entitled to a twenty-five-dollar Christmas fund. It was four days before Christmas, and Mum said instead of buying food, she would use the money to pay back rent, assuring us all of a roof for a little while longer. She told us then there would be nothing for Christmas. Mum prayed for a special Christmas. Unknown to Mum, I had been selling Christmas trees and doing odd jobs to earn enough money to buy a new pair of boots. I knew exactly which boots I wanted. They were Top Genuine Pierre Paris and they had a price of twenty-three dollars. The big day came on the afternoon of Christmas Eve. Extremely thrilled, I hurried in  the street. On the way, I noticed a house with Christmas lights and decorations. It was then that I realized that at our house, we had no lights, no decorations, nor any money for Christmas goodies. I knew then that we would have no turkey or ham for Christmas, and I felt upset. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Paragraph 1: As I continued walking, I was feeling a strange sense of guilt. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: With two full bags of groceries on the doorstep, I knocked on the door eagerly. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 As I continued walking, I was feeling a strange sense of guilt. Here I was going to buy a new pair of boots while Mum was home in tears. She would be trying to explain to us why there were no presents. The thought froze me for what seemed ages before I changed my mind. With a load lifted off my mind, I bounced into a big grocery store across the street. Soon, I found myself weighed down by all the Christmas treats. Having spent every dime of my hard-earned money, I went home with satisfaction. With two full bags of groceries on the doorstep, I knocked on the door eagerly. I could hardly wait to see my mother’s face! When Mum opened the door, she just stood there completely dumbfounded by the groceries. Holding back the tears, I said, “Merry Christmas!” I had a lot of explaining to do as we unpacked all the food and put it away. That day I got enough hugs and kisses from Mum to last two lifetimes. To see my Mum’s prayers answered more than made up for the boots I never got. It was a Merry Christmas for us after all! With a load lifted off my mind / feeling relieved ②满意:satisfaction /content 【点睛】[高分句型1] Having spent every dime of my hard-earned money, I went home with satisfaction.. The harvest moon shone bright, illuminating the stadium as our team prepared for the semifinal round of the Championship Our goal was to reach the State Championship game in December. As the team captain, I felt the weight of the game on my shoulders. Playing in the championship game was something my dad did as a senior in high school. Hoping to make it happen was a far dream of mine. I wanted to do something my dad had done, but better. The game was fiercely contested, with both teams leaving their all on the field! Our team took an early lead, but the opponents quickly countered. In a desperate attempt at a two-point conversion with three seconds left, we failed and the final score stood at 19-16. The sound of the whistle echoing through the stadium L we realized our dream of reaching the finals was over. I had my chance and blew it. I completely messed it up I knew where my parents sat and hid my face from their seats. I couldn’t bear the disappointment in the eyes of the crowd. I couldn’t bear the thought of what my dad was thinking. I felt numb, mentally and physically exhaused. I didn’t want to speak to anyone. Wo cheerleaders, no coaches, not my teammates, and especially not my dad. I feared how the conversation would go. With my gear (比赛用具) in hand, I made my way off the field. I looked up into the stands where my parents once sat. All of the seats were empty. II guessed they had decided to leave early. Was it my failure that drove them away? I didn’t blame them; I was disappointed too. It is funny how the air can be cold, your body hot and your emotions frozen as a familiar sound falls on your ringing ears. It was a whistle (哨音). A familiar whistle. 注意: (1)续写词数应为150个左右; (2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Among thousands of cheers, I recognized that whistle. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Then Dad said something I’ll never forget for the rest of my life. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Among thousands of cheers, I recognized that whistle. It came from the sideline. There he stood in his game clothing: red hat, red shirt with my number on his left breast pocket. It was my dad’s whistle. Why did he come to the sideline? What could he say? What news couldn’t wait until I got home? Why was it so important to remind me of the disappointment I had become? Head hanging down, I walked towards him. Our eyes met, both red from heartache. I stared at him awaiting the criticism. He didn’t say, “Good game,” or “You should have done better.” No expression fell over his face. Then Dad said something I’ll never forget for the rest of my life. He extended his muscular arm, raised a thumb-up, and uttered, “I love you, son.” He loves me? Even after I messed it up? Even though the weight of the game rested on my shoulders, I missed it. He loves me? Exactly. He does! All of those negative thoughts left my head. I didn’t have a father whose love was dependent on my successes or failures. He accepted me, not just for the championship. I have a father who loves me because I am his child and he is my dad. Thank you, Dad. Thank you for showing me the perfect picture of my heavenly father’s love. 词汇激活 行为类 ①低下:hanging down/lower/drop down ②凝视:stared at/gaze at ③说:uttered/say 情绪类 ①失望:disappointment/frustration ②消极:negative thoughts /passive thoughts 【点睛】[高分句型1]. He was a good reader and had plenty of books that he could read to himself. Reading on his own was fun, but Gerry also liked listening to his parents read books aloud. That way he could hear the stories in the thick books that he wasn’t yet able to read. Meanwhile, the shared experience of storytelling created a warm and comforting atmosphere that stayed with him long after the tales ended. Gerry felt truly loved and cherished in those precious moments, surrounded by the magic of storytelling and the bond between parents and children. If you asked him who was a better reader, Gerry would say that he liked both his parents equally. That was true. He loved Mom and Dad both very much. But deep down, Gerry felt that Dad was just a little bit better at reading stories because he always made different voices for each character. Gerry thought that this made the books more exciting. But Dad wasn’t always home to read to Gerry before bedtime. Gerry’s dad worked for a big company that had offices all around the world, so Dad had to travel a lot. When he was gone,  Gerry felt very sad. Mom still read books at night, but it wasn’t quite the same. Sometimes Gerry went to bed without a story at all, just to get to sleep faster and get that much closer to the day they would pick Dad up at the airport. Understanding Gerry’s feelings well, Mom made efforts to comfort Gerry during Dad’s absence. One night, Gerry felt sad because Dad was in London and would be there for two months. That was longer than any trips that came before. Just as Gerry was about to turn off the light switch and pull the covers up to his chin, Mom knocked on the door gently,  “Gerry, I have a surprise for you.” Mom came into the room and handed Gerry her phone. Gerry was surprised. Normally Mom’s phone was off limits, and there was no screen time after supper. “Take a look,” Mom encouraged. 注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Gerry took the phone and looked at the screen with curiosity. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “Dad, can we meet on the phone every night?”  asked Gerry eagerly. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Gerry took the phone and looked at the screen with curiosity. There was Dad! “Hi, Gerry!” Dad said. “Can you hear me all the way from Japan?” “Yes!” said Gerry. Something exciting happened. Dad held up a thick book with a dark blue cover. “Mom packed this book in my suitcase so I could still read you a story before bed. Would you like to hear it?” “Oh, yes!” said Gerry. With the phone propped up on the pillow, Gerry could hear Dad make all the different voices for the story’s characters. It was almost just as good as having Dad here in person. “Dad, can we meet on the phone every night?”asked Gerry eagerly. “Of course!” Dad said. And he turned the page to begin the next chapter of the story. From then on, Mom and Dad took turns to read stories to Gerry before bedtime, and Gerry felt very satisfied. Two months later, Dad returned from the business trip in London, bringing back more storybooks for Gerry. Gerry hugged his father tightly and excitedly said, “Finally, we can get rid of our phones. Tonight, you can sit next to my bed and read me stories.” 举起:hold up/raise ②.轮流:take turns to do sth. /do sth. in turn ③.返回:return/come back 情绪类 ①.满意的:satisfied/content ②.激动地:excitedly/passionately 【点睛】[高分句型1]. My mother read the little poem and began to cry out, “Buddy, I can’t believe it. What a wonderful poem!” My eyes twinkled when she poured out her praise. “What time will Dad be home?” I asked. I could hardly wait to show him, expecting the praise from an editor of Times. I spent the best part of that afternoon preparing for his arrival. First, I wrote the poem out to the best of my ability. Then I drew pictures to match this greatest poem. As seven o’clock drew near, I confidently placed it on my father’s plate on the dining room table, waiting for him to appreciate this wonderful poem of mine. That evening when my father burst in, his mood seemed even more thunderous than usual. An hour late for dinner, he did not sit down but circled the long dining room table with a drink in his hand, complaining non-stop about his employees. Under my steady stare, he paused and glared at his plate. There was an awful silence. “What’s this?” He reached for the paper and read it. Then he dropped the poem back on the table, saying, “Awful!” My eyes were getting wet. “Ben, Buddy is just a little boy. These are the first lines of poetry he’s ever produced. He needs encouragement,” my mother said. But my father disagreed, “Isn’t there enough terrible poetry in the world already? No law says Buddy has to become a poet.” They quarreled over it. I couldn’t stand it another second. I ran from the dining room, crying. A sad story, but you know, the family wounds healed (痊愈). My mother began talking to my father again. I even began writing poems again, though I seldom exposed them to my father. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 One day in my senior high school, my teacher Mrs. Brown advised me to take part in a poetry contest. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ After the success, I came to understand the true meaning of “awful”. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 One day in my senior high school, my teacher Mrs. Brown advised me to take part in a poetry contest. My first reaction was to refuse, with the word “awful” ringing in my ears. Sensing my hesitation, Mrs. Brown said, “It’s a chance to prove yourself to others, isn’t it?” “Yes, maybe my father,” I thought. In the next few weeks, I buried myself in writing, though. The moment I finished my poem, I gathered the courage to present it to my father, wondering what response I might receive. Reading quickly, he said another “awful” as expected. Suddenly, I heard the most beautiful voice, “Make it brief!” Quickly, I did so. The revised version earned me a grand prize. After the success, I came to understand the true meaning of “awful”. My father’s “awful” probably meant the high expectations he had of me instead of sharp criticism. From then on, I chose to seek further improvement in whatever I did. There was no doubt that my mother’s praise could cheer me up and boost my confidence, but it was the discouraging word “awful” that stimulated my potential and pushed me out of comfort zone. The two conflicting voices were just like two opposing winds leading me towards perfection. 词汇激活 行为类 ①完成:finish/accomplish ②感觉:sense/feel ③促进:boost /stimulate/improve 情绪类 ①赞美:praise/compliment ②犀利:sharp/ incisive 【点睛】【高分句型1】Sensing my hesitation, Mrs. Brown said, “It’s a chance to prove yourself to others, isn’t it?” (运用了现在分词作状语和不定式作后置定语) 【高分句型2】The moment I finished my poem, I gathered the courage to present it to my father, wondering what response I might receive. At ages five and eight, Bobby and I would spend our usual Saturday with Grandpa, cleaning his house. Grandpa was only in his late fifties. His own dad had died early, so he didn’t go to school but ran the family farm to raise his family. Because of that, his skills consisted of being able to sign his name, read his grandchildren’s names, and do simple sums in his head. Then I didn’t understand the poverty and limited opportunities Grandpa lived with. A little food was the only items in his small refrigerator. He worked as a night guard for several companies, and the highlight of his week was the reward he gave my brother and me for cleaning. After we were done, Grandpa would put on his only suit, and we’d head to town. As we walked, Grandpa would greet every person he met along the way. Everyone had a story to share, and Grandpa would stand quietly, always smiling, and listen with great appreciation. When we’d finally arrive at Grandpa’s favorite diner, the waitresses would all greet him as a long-lost elder. Bobby and I split an adult plate, and Grandpa either had a cup of soup or a cup of coffee, talking about how well we cleaned his place, telling anyone who would listen every step of every task we accomplished. Every waitress would make sure they came up to say “hi” to Grandpa and congratulate his grandkids on their work. It may have been a diner, but it was our another home. When dinner was over, the waitress would bring the check and slide it over to Grandpa. One day it was Gloria, and like always she bent close to him and told him the amount of the check (knowing that he couldn’t read the paper). Grandpa carefully dug into the pocket and brought out a broken coin purse. He carefully laid out the bills and coins. Then he gave Gloria a very very small tip. I was ashamed that he had got it wrong and that he—we—would be embarrassed. 注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 I was about to say something to Grandpa when Gloria grabbed my hand. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The words “being nice” played over and over in my mind. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 I was about to say something to Grandpa when Gloria grabbed my hand. “Come and get some flowers, today’s gifts, Susie,” she said as she led me toward the counter. “I want you to listen carefully, Susie,” Gloria said to me seriously. “You can’t do that. Your grandfather is very kind. Although his income is small, he has helped many people, including me. Everyone here respects him so much.” I listened carefully. “If you blame him for not tipping enough, it will not only embarrass Grandpa, but also make us sad. Just being nice.” Gloria continued. The words “being nice” played over and over in my mind. I listened to Gloria and stared at those flowers, deep in thought. I seemed to understand what Gloria said. “If you hadn’t appeared in time, I might have made a big mistake. May I have these flowers?” I whispered. “Of course.” she replied, smiling. I took the flowers and went straight to my grandfather, handing them to him with both hands and saying, “Thank you for treating us to a big meal.” Grandpa happily took the flowers and touched my head. Everyone in the restaurant was happy, too. 词类激活 行为类 ①帮助:help/assist ②出现:appear/show up/turn up 情绪类 ①开心的:happy/pleased/delighted ②伤心:sad/feel down 【点睛】【高分句型1】Although his income is small, he has helped many people, including me. The impending celebration of the maternal anniversary, known as Mother’s Day, was fast approaching, and he found himself devoid of any gift to bestow upon her. "What avenue is available to me for the procurementof a present when my financial resources are non-existent?" he pondered with a sense of urgency. In a bid to alleviate his melancholy, Jim retrieved the daily journal of current events that was casually dispersed across the sofa. His attention was arrested by a prominent proclamation on the initial page. A nearby establishment for retail purposes was the progenitor of a competition. "Articulate the unique qualities that render your mother distinguished and stand a chance to acquire an uninhibited foray into our marketplace for her," the proclamation declared. "This presents a serendipitous opportunity!" Jim exclaimed inwardly. With alacrity, he proceeded to his chamber, clasping the journal in his grasp. From his study desk, he selected a writing utensil and an unmarked sheet of paper, and commenced to inscribe his thoughts. "Her maternal excellence surpasses that of all other mothers in the terrestrial sphere. She is perpetually in the act of preparing a repast for my scholastic sojourn, and never does she overlook the provision of a sweetmeat. She indulges my desire for tales by reading to me in the twilight hours, and with unwavering diligence, she ensures the sub-lethal inspection of my slumbering quarters for any lurking nocturnal visitants. Furthermore, she bestows the most affectionate embrace, yet with a considerate discretion when in the company of my comrades, who might ridicule such a display of familial affection." Jim was well-pleased with his composition. He transcribed it with meticulous care and sought an envelope and the necessary postal insignia from his paternal figure. With haste, he made his way to the receptacle for outgoing correspondence, his entry in hand, "Mother will revel in the unrestrained exploration of the marketplace," he mused. Jim dutifully monitored the mailbox for the arrival of his accolade. Time elapsed—a succession of days, then weeks. The eve of Mother’s Day arrived, and still, there was no communication regarding the outcome of the contest. "What am I to do at this juncture?" he questioned himself. A gift remained elusive, as did the prospect of a shopping extravaganza, and his financial status remained unchanged. He was compelled to devise an alternative. With his eyes tightly shut, his toes curled in concentration, and his mind racing, Jim exerted such intense effort in his contemplation that it induced a sensation of discomfort in his auditory organs. 注意: (1)所续短文的词数应为150左右; (2)续写部分分为两段,每段开头语已为你写好。 Suddenly he had an idea. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The next morning Jim handed his present to his mom. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】  Suddenly he had an idea. Why not create a gift from the heart? Something that would convey his feelings and appreciation more deeply than any store-bought item. With renewed vigor, Jim excitedly gathered materials from around the house: colorful papers, glue, scissors, and markers. He crafted a series of coupons, each offering a promise—a hug, a chore done, a bedtime story read. He carefully decorated each coupon, pouring his love into every detail. By the time he finished, a beautiful booklet had taken shapeSuddenly he had an idea. The next morning Jim handed his present to his mom. Her eyes widened in surprise as she opened the handmade booklet, leafing through the coupons one by one. Tears welled up in her eyes as she read the promises, realizing the depth of thought and love behind each one. "Jim," she said, pulling him into a tight embrace, "this is the most wonderful gift I've ever received." The joy in her voice and the warmth of her hug told Jim all he needed to know—he had given his mother a Mother's Day gift that was truly priceless. 词汇激活 行为类 ①表达:convey/express ②收集:gather/collect ③完成:finish/complete/accomplish 情绪类 ①感激:appreciation/gratitude/be grateful ②快乐:joy/happiness/delight 【点睛】[高分句型1]. Kids, adults, pretty much everyone made me nervous. I was also what most teachers and parents would call a “good kid”. I followed the rules, got good grades in school and rarely questioned authority. But then one day, one single ride on a school bus changed all that. The school bus that day was crowded, hot, humid and smelly. Most of the other kids were busy with conversations, arguments and games. Only a few of my classmates were looking through the windows at the water filling the street. It was raining too hard. The road outside looked like a flooded stream. I sat alone as usual, speaking to no one. Suddenly I saw a kitty on the other side of the road. Poor cat, I thought. He was all wet and didn't seem to know where to go to get out of the rain. I wanted to go and get the kitty, but I knew that the bus driver, Mrs Foster, would never allow me off the bus.It was against the rules to even stand up. I would get in big trouble for trying to rescue a cat.I also thought that the other kids would laugh at the animal that was dripping wet. They would see his misery (悲惨) as their entertainment. I could see him shaking. His movements revealed a level of fear that I had never witnessed before. My heart was racing. Tears were rolling down my cheeks. I wanted to rush off the bus without asking permission, and pull the cat from the rain, and wrap it up in my warm jacket, But I also pictured getting into trouble before the cat could be saved, the other kids staring and laughing. I sat motionless, unable to act. I was sure that I heard his terrified meow. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150个左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Somehow, I managed to stand up, crying,“Mrs Foster!” ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Mrs Foster grabbed the cat, returned to the bus, handed it to me, and asked how to handle it. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Somehow, I managed to stand up, crying, “Mrs Foster!” My voice was trembling with emotion as I broke the silence on the bus. All eyes turned to me, surprised by my sudden outburst. Mrs Foster, with a stern expression, turned around from her driving position. “What is it, young man?” she asked, her tone a mix of curiosity and annoyance. I choked back my tears and pointed out the window, my voice barely above a whisper. “There’s a kitty out there, all wet and scared. Please, can I help it?” To my amazement, Mrs Foster’s expression softened, and said that she would get off the bus to get the cat back. Mrs Foster grabbed the cat, her gentle touch calming the shivering creature. She returned to the bus, handed it to me, and asked, “Now, what do we do with this little one?” I was taken by surprise but quickly regained my composure. “We can wrap him in my jacket to keep him warm,” I said, pulling off my jacket and wrapping it around the cat. The other kids, who had initially been skeptical, now offered their assistance, some offering tissues to dry the cat’s fur, others sharing snacks from their lunchboxes. Mrs Foster smiled approvingly. “Well done, everyone,” she said. “Sometimes, breaking the rules for the right reason is what makes us human.” That day, the bus ride became a lesson in empathy and kindness, and I realized that being brave didn’t always mean standing up to bullies or fighting battles. It also meant standing up for the vulnerable and doing what’s right, even if it meant stepping out of your comfort zone. 词汇激活 行为类 帮助:help/assist 返回:return/go back 意识到:realize/be aware of 情绪类 害怕的:scared/frightened 感到惊讶的:surprised/amazed 【点睛】[高分句型1] My voice was trembling with emotion as I broke the silence on the bus.(运用了as引导时间状语从句) [高分句型2] That day, the bus ride became a lesson in empathy and kindness, and I realized that being brave didn’t always mean standing up to bullies or fighting battles.(运用了that引导宾语从句) Passage 2 (2023-2024学年高二下·江苏徐州·期末) Garcia, a mother of two sons living in Los Banos, was home alone with them. She had vertigo (眩晕症). Her husband, who had already left for his construction job, couldn’t attend to them at home. Garcia often found it hard to take care of her two sons, Thomason, aged 7, and Andrew, 5. Fortunately, Garcia lived in a friendly community. Neighbors often came to check on them. Mrs. Mathew, Garcia’s next-door neighbour dropped most. One morning, when Karen Garcia awoke suddenly at 4 a. m., the room was spinning. She felt everything was turning. She had never experienced it before. Both of the kids were asleep. She took her vertigo medication, and it didn't work. She couldn’t keep it down, vomiting (呕吐) for hours. At exactly 7:00 a,m, the children woke up. Usually, by this time, their mother would already be up, preparing breakfast in the kitchen. But today, the house felt frightening still. The boys began their search, calling out softly at first, then louder when there was no response. They checked the kitchen, the living room, their parents' bedroom, and even the garden. Each empty room increased their fear and anxiety. They finally approached the bathroom. Pushing the door open, both boys froze in horror. Their mother lay on the floor, pale and unconscious. The kids were rather distraught (忧心如焚的), frantically trying to help her. Thomason called 911, and gave the dispatcher (调度员) the details in a trembling voice. Before long, a crew of emergency responders arrived at the scene. They quickly made out that Garcia was in medical distress and should be sent to hospital immediately. The atmosphere of the hospital was too much for the kids so they had better stay. Then came the problem: who would accompany them? At that time, Mrs. Mathew appeared, curious at all the mess. She offered to help at once. Watching the ambulance roaring away, they retraced indoors. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Seeing the kids’ unsettled faces, Mrs. Mathew decided to do something.___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Later that day, word came from the hospital that Garcia was out of danger.___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Seeing the kids’ unsettled faces, Mrs. Mathew decided to do something. She gently explained the situation, reassuring them that their mother would be taken care of. Then, Mrs. Mathew was to prepare breakfast for the two kids. She also got them involved to take out the toaster, the sugar and the flour and asked them to help to make toast, distracting them from the worries. In a matter of minutes, the kids’ moods shifted. Once the kids finished eating breakfast, Mrs. Mathew kept them occupied with stories and games. Later that day, word came from the hospital that Garcia was out of danger. The kids, together with Mrs. Mathew, went to the hospital to visit Garcia. In the ward, they were relieved to find Garcia recovering from vertigo. The kids hugged their mom tightly, tears streaming down their faces. Then, they were so excited to tell Garcia about the time spent with Mrs. Mathew at home. Mrs. Mathew stood nearby, smiling warmly. Garcia was grateful for her neighbor’s timely assistance. The kindness and support from the community helped the family through a difficult time, reminding them that they were not alone in their struggle. 词汇激活 行为类 照顾:take care of/attend to 帮助:help/assist 拥抱:hug/embrace 情绪类 兴奋的:excited/thrilled 感激的:grateful/appreciative 【点睛】[高分句型1] She gently explained the situation, reassuring them that their mother would be taken care of.(运用了现在分词作状语,that引导宾语从句) [高分句型2] The kids hugged their mom tightly, tears streaming down their faces.(运用了独立主格结构) Passage 3 (2023-2024学年高二下·江苏南通·期末) I was shy when I was thirteen. My classmates were engaged in heated conversations and games. The driver had shouted at several kids who had been standing up in their seats and yelling. I sat alone as usual, speaking to no one. Should I break the rules and risk getting in trouble, or should I just sit here and watch the kitty drown? The terror in the cat’s eyes haunted me. I knew I couldn’t just sit by and do nothing. Summoning all my courage, I stood up and shouted, “Mrs. Foster, please stop the bus! There’s a cat drowning across the street!” My heart was pounding as all eyes turned to me, but I knew I had to speak up for that helpless creature. Everyone stopped talking and looked at me, waiting. Mrs. Foster stared at me through the rearview mirror, her eyes narrowing. The bus fell silent, and for a moment, it felt like the whole world was holding its breath. Then, surprisingly, she nodded and pulled over. “Go get your cat,” she said. I couldn’t believe my ears. Grabbing my umbrella, I leaped out of the bus and splashed through the rain to the drowning kitty. Its little paws were still clinging to the storm drain. Gently, I lifted it out of the water and wrapped it in my jacket. Back on the bus, I received a round of applause from my classmates. That day, I learned that sometimes, breaking the rules and standing up for what’s right can lead to unexpected rewards. And it was worth it. 词汇激活 行为类 ①大喊:shout/yell ②跳出:leap out/spring out ③举起:lift/raise 情绪类 ①恐惧:terror/horror ②惊讶地:surprisingly/amazingly 【点睛】[高分句型1]My heart was pounding as all eyes turned to me, but I knew I had to speak up for that helpless creature.(运用了as引导的时间状语从句以及省略that的宾语从句) [高分句型2]That day, I learned that sometimes, breaking the rules and standing up for what’s right can lead to unexpected rewards.(运用了that引导的宾语从句,what引导的宾语从句) Passage 4 (2023-2024学年高二下·江苏扬州·期末) I was shy when I was young — everyone made me nervous. I have to help that cat in trouble, and I can’t just leave it there.” I said firmly. Her eyes met mine, surprise quickly replaced by a look of understanding. She pulled over. “No one is to leave this bus.” Mrs. Foster said seriously, rushing into rain. Without grabbing an umbrella, Mrs. Foster quickly pulled the cat into the safety of her arms. As we all. watched in silence, she tightly held the terrified creature, removed her own coat to wrap the cat in it, and then raced back to the bus. We all cheered until she gestured us to be quiet. The cat was rescued, and I breathed a sigh of relief. I was still a pretty good kid after that day, but I learned to speak up to overcome my shyness. 词汇激活 行为类 ①怦怦跳:race/pound ②脱下:remove/take off ③克服:overcome/get over 情绪类 ①害怕的:terrified/startled ②羞怯:shyness/bashfulness 【点睛】[高分句型1] Although I did not break rules, my heart was racing. He was to meet the chief editor of the newspaper The Gazette. “Maybe I’d get a longer route,” he smiled. “Hello, Henry. Wow! Strong handshake!” The chief editor shook hands with Henry. “Thanks. It’s from rolling and delivering all those newspapers.” “So, about the newspapers ……” the editor paused. Henry’s smile faded. “We’re closing shop. Last July, the whole world saw the moon landing on TV —— live. Television is how people get their news today. Local newspapers are the first to close.” He shrugged. “Um, no! It’s sad. People won’t get their neighborhood news anymore,” said Henry. The editor nodded and sighed. Then, they waved goodbye. A week later, Henry wondered if his old customers on Maple Street missed The Gazette as much as he did. He started out in the morning on his old route with a notebook. First stop: No.26. Mr. Grady answered when asked, “I sure miss the days of reading the weeks’ happenings in The Gazette. By the way, I have a pile of comics (漫画) from The Gazette. Think someone would want them?” “Maybe. I’ll ask around.” Henry took a note in his notebook. He stopped at No. 27. Mrs. Burke was busy feeding her three babies. Henry suggested, “You should hire a babysitter.” “Definitely! I was going to put an ad in The Gazette, but …… Know any neighbor with experience?” Mr. Simon was at No.28, carrying his guitar. “Hey, Henry. My band is having a concert in the park next Friday. Tell all your friends.” As Henry made more notes, an idea flashed across his mind: maybe he could create a newsletter (简报) for the neighborhood. But how would he print it? He headed to the library and found the librarian. Seconds later, in front of a mimeograph machine (滚筒油印机), the librarian turned a handle and a printed sheet rolled out. “Will mimeographed copies work?” she asked. 注意: 1.续写词数应为 150 左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 “Perfect,” Henry was confident to carry out his plan. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The neighbors on Maple Street were amazed at the newsletter.. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 “Perfect,” Henry was confident to carry out his plan. Customers cheered Henry’s idea. Besides Mrs. Burke who longed for a babysitter and Mr. Simon who desired a large audience for his concert, Henry also collected six other neighbors appealing and needs, including Mr Grady who yearned for his children’s coming back for a short reunion. Information in hand, Henry knocked at Mr. Trotta’s door and pleaded for his support in publishing his first Oak Street News, who approved almost immediately. Soon, Henry’s tabloid was in circulation, which he cheerfully delivered from door to door as before. The neighbors on Maple Street were amazed at the newsletter. Neigh bons applauded the idea of sharing their needs in a communal newspaper, which really addressed their immediate concern in a practical and efficient way. As Mrs Burke successfully found an ideal babysitter, Mr Simon secured a large following for his concert and Mr Grady who happily reunited with his kids. Henry realized. from his deep heart, that The Gazette was far from gone in this TV era, but transformed into Oak Street News that connected, bonded and tied the Oak neighbors in a cory fabric. 3. 词汇激活 行为类 ①收集:collect/gather ②渴望:yearn for/long for ③支持:approve/be in favor of 情绪类 ①高兴地:cheerfully/gladly ②高效的:efficient/effective 【点睛】[高分句型1] Besides Mrs. Burke who longed for a babysitter and Mr. Simon who desired a large audience for his concert, Henry also collected six other neighbors appealing and needs, including Mr Grady who yearned for his children’s coming back for a short reunion. She is a young mother. By seven, she has already eaten breakfast, had a cup of coffee, washed the dishes, taken her shower, and put on her make-up. Then, it’s time to do the housework. One early Saturday morning, when she was washing her son’s vacuum bottle (保温瓶), she felt upset. After having been used for long, the bottle was in poor condition. It was high time that she should buy a new one for her kid Bill, but her budget was limited. She had to decide that she would buy a new one sometime later. Complaining wasn’t how she would normally choose to start the day, especially with the sun shining. To cheer up and continue the day a bit more optimistically, she left the housework for later and set out with her little kid Bill for their morning walk on the beach a little earlier than usual. The local shops hadn’t opened yet. It was quiet outside; there were few people around. Walking through the downtown area, something on the pavement caught her attention. From a distance, it appeared to be a package of some sort. They walked over and Nancy picked it up. Upon examination, it turned out to be a brown paper bag. The downtown had nine blocks with stores. Grocery stores, furniture shops, cake shops, banks, bookstores, home-goods stores, clothing shops, and other businesses lined the street. Looking around, Nancy found none of them had been open for business. It was too early. Nancy knew all this indicated that the object had most likely been purchased by someone the evening or day before. Since it was near the road, Nancy guessed someone must have dropped it, probably while loading other bags into a car. Nancy looked inside the bag for more information. After opening it, she found there was a small handbag. Inside the bag there were many cards. Among them there was the owner’s business card, which showed the owner’s name and phone number. Besides, there was a box in the brown bag. “What may be in the box?” Nancy thought to herself. 注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。 She checked it, surprised to find there was a new vacuum bottle for kids in it. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Based on the information on the business card, Nancy made up her mind to call the owner. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 She checked it, surprised to find there was a new vacuum bottle for kids in it. Seeing it, Bill took the vacuum bottle from Nancy and jumped up and down with joy. With her heart beating fast, Nancy wondered whether they should give it back. However, thinking how worried the owner must have been, she bent down and looked at Bill, saying, “No, Bill. We should give it back.” Hearing it, Bill cried, but Nancy didn’t change her mind. Then, after some explanation, little Bill seemed to understand and finally nodded, supporting her idea. Based on the in formation on the business card, Nancy made up her mind to call the owner. The phone was answered by a woman after a few rings and Nancy explained the matter to her. The owner expressed her gratitude and said she would go to pick up the bag instantly. Before long, the owner arrived and Nancy handed the bag to her. She was so thankful that she insisted on giving Nancy some money. The woman also offered to give the new vacuum bottle to Bill when she saw Bill was quite fond of it. However, Nancy declined politely. In her opinion, doing a good thing doesn’t mean trying to get a reward. It shows good human nature. 词汇激活 行为类 ①哭泣:cry/weep/shed tears ②解释:explain/clarify ③表达:express/convey ④拒绝:decline/refuse/turn down 情绪类 ①开心:joy/delight/happiness ②担心的:worried/bothered/concerned ③感激的:thankful/grateful 【点睛】[高分句型1] With her heart beating fast, Nancy wondered whether they should give it back. I thought I’d given myself enough time to get to the airport, however, as often was the case, I was running late and had to pack my bag with little time left. Confused about what to carry, I stuffed all the clothes in my little bag, taking no notice of the weight. Thirty minutes before the flight, I was waiting at my terminal (航站楼) in the airport and couldn’t stop smiling. I was too excited to go on a much-needed trip. A little while later, I heard an announcement “Passengers flying to Taupo on Flight NZ5091 are requested to weigh your cabin luggage and collect your tag”. I stood in the line waiting for my turn, clueless about how much my bag would weigh, deep inside hoping not over the weight limit. When it was my turn, I placed my bag on the weighing scale and whoaaaa!! It was 9.4 kgs. I asked the flight attendant if I could buy $20 extra luggage allowance (行李费) as shown on the app but I was too late for it. Instead, I was asked to pay an additional fee of $65. I either had to pay or leave something away to bring it down to 7 kgs. I asked the attendant whether they would give my stuff back to me if I returned 3 days later and surprisingly I was told I wouldn’t get it back. To me, a bad luggage experience had the power to completely sour a trip. With no other alternatives, I decided to give up some of my stuff. Unsettled, annoyed, disappointed! As I started removing the items, I saw a lady approaching me. It looked like she had heard the whole thing. She sat down next to me. “Are you OK? I should be able to help you.” She said. 注意: (1)续写词数应为150个左右; (2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 I looked up, surprised, and saw her pointing at her bag. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ While I was worried whether I could get my stuff back, the plane landed. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】  I looked up, surprised, and saw her pointing at her bag. She said he didn’t take many things and could help me share some of my belongings. I couldn’t believe the help from a stranger. But, I thought to myself “this is the best way.” I am grateful to her for her kindness and transferred my overweight items to her bag. I managed to get on the plane without paying any extra fees. When we got on the plane, our seats were far apart and we didn’t communicate much, so I knew very little about this stranger.  While I was worried whether I could get my stuff back, the plane landed. There were a lot of people getting out of the plane. I was waiting for my turn and waiting for the strange woman to pass me by and return my stuff. In fact, I had been prepared for the worst. All sorts of disturbing thoughts ran through my mind. Just then, the strange woman tapped me on the shoulder. And voluntarily returned my things. I thanked the strange woman from the bottom of my heart. It also gave me a new faith in humanity. 词汇激活 行为类 ①交流:communicate /interact ②帮助:help/assist ③成功做某事:manage to do sth/succeed in doing sth ④感谢:thank/appreciate 情绪类 ①令人不安的:disconcerting/disturbing ②感激的:grateful/appreciative 【点睛】【高分句型1】When we got on the plane, our seats were far apart and we didn’t communicate much, so I knew very little about this stranger. A retired engineer、76-year-old Wilson had been offering free rides to college students for the past eight years. Since no first had started volunteering his car to the young people. Wilson had covered an astonishing 64,000 miles, and had countless pleasant and often humorous conversation with the students he transported to and from school. The students who he'd driven had go ne on to become physicians, teachers and engineers, but what they'd also got out of their time in school was finding a role model and a friend in Wilson. Some students even called him “Grandpa”. Tina Stern received rides from Wilson for all her four years in college, and the trips meant much more to her than just free transportation. “It's not just a ride; you're not just sitting there in awkward silence or with your headphones on.” Stern said. “He asks you questions and actually remembers the answers, so the next time you ride with him, he'll check on those things.” Wilson often went beyond to ensure the welfare and safety of the students. If they had problems with registration, Wilson was there to assist them. If they ran out of certain daily necessities, Wilson would drive to the nearest store and purchase what was needed. For many students, riding with Wilson had allowed them to complete their education—but according to Wilson, he benefited just as much from the experience. “I just love driving, and I love these kids,” Wilson said. “It's such a privilege to be a part of these kids' lives, getting to know them-and hearing their stories." One day, Stern came across Wilson and his wife in the hospital, where she knew Wilson was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease(阿尔兹海默症). “He isn't what he used to be,” his wife told Stem. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________$$ 专题10 读后续写 ( 地 城 考点 01 家人和亲人 ) Passage 1 (2023-2024学年高二下·江苏宿迁·期末) “Maya, do you know what day it is today?” Ali asked. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右;   2. 请按如下格式作答。 A week later, Jon received a call from the company. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The next day after work, I found a thank-you note on my bedside table. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Passage 3 (2023-2024学年高二下·浙江衢州·期末) My fourth of July vacation began with a scream. “Tara!”  I jumped, my eyelids snapping open. I ran over to the bed. I picked up the paper, and it was just as I’d feared. 注意: 1.续写词数应为 150个左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Thinking about this, Truman rushed into the living room, his heart pounding. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Bryan smiled and began picking out his tubes. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Passage 5 (2023-2024学年高二下·福建福州·期末) Grandfather was a wise and honorable man. His house was not far from ours, and I would visit him often going home after school. Searching for clues about his mother's whereabouts (行踪) , Mark found a dusty envelope on the kitchen counter. Curious, he opened it, pulling out a letter in his mother's handwriting. It turned out that his mother left her house a year ago because she felt lonely. She called a local retirement community and asked if she could join them. “I hope you can visit me before it's too late. I love you, my precious son! ” her letter said. There was not much money, so we went on relief, now called social assistance. Looking back, I realize what Mum went through sending us kids to school. Tonight, you can sit next to my bed and read me stories.” Passage 11 (2023-2024学年高二下·河南郑州·期末) I wrote my first poem. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ( 地 城 考点 02 公益活动,善行义举 ) Passage 1 (2023-2024学年高二下·河北承德·期末) I was shy when I was little. Henry, the paperboy, finished delivering his newspapers on Maple Street. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Passage 7 (2023-2024学年高二下·福建厦门·期末) I had booked the flights in somewhat of a hurry with just a carry-on bag, thinking 7 kgs was enough for a 3-day trip to Taupo. “It's such a privilege to be a part of these kids' lives, getting to know them-and hearing their stories." So I telephoned Professor Smith for help. I had heard that he was a good doctoral supervisor in the university, but I hadn’t met him. I tried to call him once, but to my disappointment, he said he was a little busy at that time and that he would contact me later. One day, I was driving home from the university when I saw an accident at the side of the road. The two cars collided (碰撞), but fortunately the drivers were not injured. They argued with each other about the accident and became annoyed. Then I stopped my car to see if they might need my help. “Calm down, gentlemen. What’s the matter?” I approached them and said. “It’s just a minor scratch (划痕). There were some disagreements when we tried to work things out privately. I think he is asking for a little too much,” one driver said to me. I learned that he didn’t have enough money on hand to pay for the damage. Understanding the situation, I offered to help. I paid the amount needed to settle the matter. A troublesome matter turned into a peaceful resolution with my involvement. When the driver offered to exchange our business cards, I agreed. “It was so kind of you to reach out. I’ll repay your money tomorrow,” he said. “Forget it. It’s just a small thing,” I responded. Finally, we said goodbye to each other. However, I didn’t expect my kind behavior would really bring me good luck. When I went back home, I happened to see the driver’s business card. It was hard to imagine disagreeing with her about anything, because when we first met, we got along so great. It was as if we’d known each other forever. Whenever we got to pick a partner at camp, we picked each other. Whenever we had a break, we hung out together. And the more time we spent together, the more we realized how amazingly alike we were. We both had two lovely cats. We both liked baking extra-creative cookies. But then something happened. The tent camp was next to a piece of beautiful land that had a bunch of giant old trees on it. Whenever it was nice out, we’d get to eat our lunch at picnic tables that were right by some of those trees. “Whoa!” said Karina one day. “Look at the millions of holes all the way up and down this trunk.” “That’s amazing,” I said. “A special kind of woodpecker (啄木鸟)makes those holes to store acorns (橡子).” “Pretty cool! ”said our counselor, Miguel. “Now, let’s all be sure to keep this magical forest as clean and perfect. Don’t forget to put your trash and recyclables in the bins.” And that’s when things got complicated. “Hey,” said our friend LeVar. “Have you guys heard that shopping-mall rumor (传闻)? They want to cut down a bunch of those trees to make room for a shopping center.” “That’s terrible!” I said. “We have to stop that.” “I disagree,” said Karina. “My parents said the shopping center would make new jobs for people.” “But think of all the birds and squirrels that would lose their homes!” I said. “I want people to have jobs, but not if it means cutting down trees.” “Don’t you think people’s jobs are more important than trees?” Karina asked. “Can’t we figure out how to make jobs without destroying nature?” I answered. “You know,” Karina said, super seriously, “maybe we’re not quite as alike as we thought.” I sighed sadly. 注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右; (2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Maybe two people with opposite points of view just aren’t meant to be friends, I was thinking. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ We ended up having much more fun at the tent camp. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Passage 2 (2023-2024学年高二下·广东惠州·期末) In a small town nestled in the heart of a green valley, there lived two friends,Alex and Ben.They grew up playing by the banks of the crystal-clear River Jade, which flowed through their village, providing them with a source of joy. After school, they would catch fish or swim in it,adding color and fun to their life. When they were in middle school, however, they started to lose the eagerness to play in the river. The once crystal-clear water was now dirty and smelly with garbage such as bottles and plastic bags floating on its surface, and the fish that once swam lively here seemed to be gone. They really got upset about it. Nothing changed until one day Alex attended a lecture on protecting the earth from being polluted in the school. He was shocked to see the terrible pollution caused by human's activities and got to appreciate the importance of protecting the earth. After the lecture,Alex walked home with a heavy heart, concerned about the huge amount of annoying rubbish in the river.Suddenly an idea flashed across his mind. He rushed to Ben's home and couldn't wait to share it with Ben. Later, they went to the riverbank together. “Our river is sick,” said Alex in a worried tone, “We need to find a way to heal it.” “Yes,”said Ben in agreement. “It's our responsibility to protect the hometown river. What can we do?” Alex suggested eagerly, “We should clean up the garbage from the riverbanks at weekends.” Ben nodded thoughtfully and said, “That is a good idea. But it is impossible for only two of us to remove so much garbage. Besides, the villagers may throw garbage into the river again and again.” “You're right! Maybe we need more helpers and also need to educate more people about the importance of keeping our river clean and encourage them to make a change.” Finally, they both decided that something must be done before it was too late. As children of the observatory’s researchers, they were no strangers to those joyful Arctic creatures and often saw them happily leaping up and down, digging holes in the snow for warmth, and chasing after their prey (猎物). Of the two, Alex seemed to be more attracted to those furry balls and formed a particularly strong bond with these lovely friends. “We’re not small kids, Alex. It’s high time we matured and stopped treating there search foxes like pets,” Lily said. Alex, said, in disagreement, “But they seem to enjoy my fondling and respond to me!” Smiling softly, Lily jokingly called him “fox charmer”. But Alex just smiled and turned blind eyes to it. Suddenly, an urgent alarm set off, followed by flashing red lights, indicating there were troubles. Rushing to see what was happening, they discovered the surroundings were colder than ever, with frost beginning to form on the wall. Never had Lily seen such a sight within the Observatory. “The heating system must have failed,” she exclaimed in disbelief. Wasting no time, Lily sent their parents a message, who were doing fieldwork outside. Now, it was up to Lily and Alex to face the extreme cold themselves and survive the extreme cold until help arrived. As time went by, their bodies began to shake uncontrollably. “We must do something or we'll freeze to death!” Lily cried loudly in desperation. With panic setting in, Alex’s eyes noticed that the pack of foxes huddled together in the snow just now began to dig a snow hole. In a moment of inspiration, he remembered how the foxes would dig deep into the snow to insulate (隔绝) themselves from the extreme cold, creating a warm environment beneath the frozen Arctic land. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150个左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 “I’ve got an idea to keep us warm!” Alex smiled and comforted his sister. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ After more than two hours, their parents returned with assistance. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Passage 4 (2023-2024学年高二下·江苏常州·期末) One of my first nights on call started by responding to a message on my phone, and then I arrived at the animal hospital hurriedly. I had been working as a veterinary (兽医的) nurse at a university hospital for only nine months. My job included assisting doctors in performing operations on animals. And I was already familiar with the basic operation procedure: preparing operation tools, giving anesthesia (麻醉), positioning the animal on the operation table, cleaning the injured part, and at last, attaching the steel plate to the broken bone. On this particular night, the only information given was an emergency that needed my immediate attention. I was calm, yet anxious as I headed to the hospital. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, I found that two doctors and another nurse had just arrived. They were checking the patient in a stall (牲畜棚) near the operation room. I entered the stall, surprised to find there stood a tiny horse. Obviously, she lived outside all year round. Her entire body was covered with caked-on mud. She looked normal. The only thing out of place was the unnatural angle at which she held her right back leg, which was injured. As I came closer, I realized she was shaking and sweating, even though the night was cool. As I approached, I heard her family talking to her, their voices quiet and serious. “It’s okay, Doro. We love you. Doctors will fix you right up, ”said a small child. Her name was Daisy and the horse was 28-year-old with a broken leg. For a horse, such an injury usually means the death sentence. And Doro’s age was against her. Her family included Mom, Dad, Daisy and her twin brothers, who were as worried as the little girl about the seriousness of the horse’s condition. Looking wide-eyed and frightened, Daisy turned to her father and asked, “Daddy, you won’t let Doro die, will you? ”That look in her eyes struck everyone’s heart. I knew we would be working all night to save Doro. Soon, we anxiously prepared for the operation. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150个左右; 2. 请按如下格式作答。 I rushed into Central Supply, the area where all our operation tools were kept. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “Doro has woken up and now you can see her. Come!” I cheerfully told the family. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Passage 5 (2023-2024学年高二下·浙江丽水·期末) Jennifer worked with her mother in their vegetable garden every day. The produce from their garden was sold at the farmer's market. This is how they made their living. Jennifer often pretended the plants she tended were beautiful tulips, like Mrs. Talia’s prize flowers. “Foolish girl!” her mother scolded.  “Flowers can't be eaten! Tend to the vegetables. That's our living.” Jennifer knew her mother was right. The only person in the village who made money selling flowers was Mrs. Talia. She grew tulips and sold them to local flower shops. Every year she won first prize at the Tulip Festival. Other contestants whispered that Mrs. Talia used magic to grow her tulips. How else could she win first prize twenty years in a row? Jennifer envied Mrs. Talia. If she could sell flowers like Mrs. Talia, she would be able to buy things for her mother. But tulips were expensive to start, and Jennifer could only dream about growing them. One day, Jennifer visited Mrs. Talia to see her flowers. Mrs. Talia was inspecting her tulips when she arrived. The garden of flowers springing up thrilled Jennifer. Mrs. Talia shattered her daydream. “Spying on me again!”Mrs. Talia frowned. Jennifer took a deep breath and explained she came only to see her flowers, hoping to grow such beautiful tulips and win a prize at the festival like her. “You! Win a prize growing flowers?”Mrs. Talia chuckled and told Jennifer the secret to growing prize tulips had been passed down to her from past generations of her family. Mrs. Talia patted her shoulder and said sticking to vegetables was a better choice for her. Mrs. Talia returned to her gardening, ignoring the sad look on Jennifer’s face. Then she pulled up what looked like a weed. “What's that?” Jennifer asked. Mrs. Talia said it was only a shabby plant and then threw it over the fence into the field beside the garden. Jennifer smiled and had an idea. She bowed farewell to Mrs. Talia and went out of the garden gate. Jennifer looked down at the discarded plant on the village path and glanced back. Mrs. Talia was busy minding her prize tulips. Jennifer quickly bent over and picked up the plant before rushing home. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为 150 左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Jennifer wondered what she should do with her plant. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Jennifer got up on festival morning. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Passage 6 (2023-2024学年高二下·山东滨州·期末) One day, Bart decided he wanted to get a dog. So he and his parents drove to the local animal shelter. There were two dogs that Bart liked. But he finally picked one named Scruffy. Scruffy looked exactly like his name—he was small, naughty with hair going in all directions. He just wanted to play and run around all the time. Bart’s parents did not like Scruffy at all. Scruffy was too energetic for them. The other dog, called Lady, was a very pretty and quiet dog. Since his parents insisted, he agreed to adopt Lady but not Scruffy. Back home, Lady slept in Bart’s room that night and the next night, too. Bart liked having her near him. He started to love that sweet dog. On the third day, tragedy struck. For no apparent reason, Lady quietly died in her sleep. Bart felt heartbroken. The next morning, after they had laid Lady to rest, Bart said, “Mom, Dad, I really liked the other dog, Scruffy. I know he liked me, too. Can’t we go back and get him?” His parents told him to forget Scruffy because three days had gone by, and it would be too late. “Too late? Too late for what?” he asked. “There are so many animal-lovers coming to the shelter, and if it were too late, Scruffy might have been adopted by someone else.” replied his father. “What?” exclaimed Bart, not wanting to hear the answer. “But let’s go back anyway. Maybe we can find Scruffy again.” So Bart’s parents drove him back to the shelter. When Dad parked the car, the three of them entered the shelter and directly went to the wire cage that had held Scruffy days before, only to find it was empty! “Scruffy is gone! Mom, Dad, he’s gone! Why?”, shouted Bart in great despair. At that moment, a gentle voice came from a young woman, “Can I help you, folks?” “Yes, I want the dog that was here, in this cage. The dog is gone. I want that dog. Where’s the dog?” asked Bart anxiously. “Oh, sorry to tell you he has been adopted by an old man already.” replied the woman. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150个左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Disappointed, Bart determined to find Scruffy back, though. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Moved by the kind kid, the old man decided to hand Scruffy to him. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Passage 7 (2023-2024学年高二下·河南许昌·期末) Lenny worked as a man collecting rubbish of neighborhoods. One day, he was busy with his work. During it, he also tried to look for a toy that he could send to her daughter Janet as a birthday gift. After a long time, he failed to find a good enough toy. “How could I let my daughter down for the second year?” Lenny thought sadly. He was standing among the rubbish. Suddenly, he heard an animal’s sound. It was a little dog, which had been hiding under a big wood board, looking Lenny straight in the eye. “Hi! Where’s your mom?” Lenny asked and picked up the dog, looking around for any sign of another dog. At the same time, his co-worker Joe waited in the garbage truck. “Lenny, just leave it alone. We’re running late. You don’t want to lose this job, do you?” Joe reminded. His friend was right. He couldn’t afford to lose this job. He needed to pay for Janet’s medical bills. Janet suffered from special epilepsy (癫痫) every few weeks. Every time, the sudden attack of the disease would cause Janet to fall on the ground with painful convulsions (抽搐) . Lenny thought about putting the dog back down for a second. But he couldn’t let the poor little creature in his arms go. He looked around once again and carried him along. He wanted to save the dog and planned to give it to Janet. When he arrived home, little Janet asked, “Dad! What’s in this box? ” Lenny was silent, worrying she’d dislike it. Unexpectedly, when Janet opened the box, she said excitedly, “Oh, a little dog. ” This dog was an unusual type of dog. It could pick up on early signs of an upcoming attack of epilepsy. Then, it would bark (吠叫) , warning the owner about it. Then, people could rush in time to prepare everything necessary to treat and calm the convulsions that were about to happen to the patient. Not knowing that special, natural ability of the dog, Lenny and Janet lifted the little creature together. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为 150个左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Then, Janet happily put her arms around the dog. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “Does the dog worsen Janet’s disease?” Lenny wondered and rushed to the hospital. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Passage 8 (2023-2024学年高二下·广东东莞·期末) Running Water It was a hot summer evening in July, and I had accepted an invitation from my friend John to visit him and his family on their farm. The family showed me around their farm, home to about thirty black and white Holstein cows. The fields were quiet and peaceful on this lazy Sunday afternoon. The creek, a small river, which poured down out of the mountains, sparkled in the sunlight as it ran through their green land. Now it was evening, and I listened with curiosity as they told me that one of their cows would give birth to a calf (a baby cow) out in the field. I was very interested in seeing the birth of the new calf, and really wanted to stay. On my way out the door I heard John’s father yelling something crazily from the field. The family became very excited and everyone ran out to see what was happening. We could see their dad down by the riverside of the creek. Apparently the mother cow had wandered away from the cattle and slipped down the muddy riverside of the creek into the cold rushing water. The riverside was so high that the tractor (拖拉机) was needed to pull her out. We all ran through the field to the creek while one of John’s brothers raced to the barn (谷仓) to get the tractor. As we reached the creek we saw the poor cow had gone below the water, which was up to her neck, with the cold water rushing around her. By now there was some panic because the tractor that was needed to pull the cow out was very slow. And it still had some distance to cover from the barn to the creek. Suddenly one of the girls yelled out, “The calf is coming. Someone has to jump in and help! ”It had been a hot day, but by now the family had changed into jeans for the evening. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 As the only one still wearing shorts, I was chosen to jump in! _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Now our next major concern was trying to get the calf warmed up. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Passage 9 (2023-2024学年高二下·广东深圳·期末) The sudden awakening to a rumbling sound was initially mistaken for thunder, but the unmistakable sensation of the ground trembling beneath you quickly dispelled that notion. Realizing you were in the midst of an earthquake, a natural disaster you had only heard tales of, your heart began to race with the urgency of the situation. The room around you was in a violent dance, each object seemingly alive with chaotic motion. You fought against the tremors to maintain your balance, knowing that swift action was crucial for your safety. With determination, you rose from your bed, navigating the unpredictable terrain towards the door. Exiting your dwelling, you were met with a scene of pandemonium. The earth’s relentless shaking was accompanied by the ominous sounds of structures succumbing to the force, their collapse echoing through the air. People’s panicked screams and cries for help filled the atmosphere, a testament to the chaos that had been unleashed. Guided by prior knowledge that doorways can offer relative safety during seismic events, you sought refuge in the nearest one. As you huddled there, the fear was palpable, the ground’s continuous shaking a stark reminder of nature’s raw power. Time seemed to stretch, each second an eternity, until finally, the earth settled. Cautiously, you emerged from your makeshift shelter, surveying the devastation that the earthquake had wrought. The once-standing edifices now lay in ruins, and in the distance, fires danced, casting an eerie glow over the landscape. Recalling the survival kit stored in your vehicle, you made your way to the parking lot, hoping it would provide the tools and supplies necessary for immediate needs. Upon arrival, however, you were confronted with a harsh reality: your car, a symbol of escape and independence, was now a victim of the disaster, crushed under the weight of debris from a neighboring structure. Alone but not defeated, you resolved to remain composed and think with clarity. Scanning your surroundings, you spotted a group of individuals huddled together for comfort and support. Joining them, you found a sense of community in the shared experience, a testament to the human spirit’s resilience in the face of adversity. 注意: (1)续写词数应为150个左右; (2)请按如下格式在相应位置作答。 Together, we worked to find a safe place to take shelter. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Eventually, after a few days, help arrived, and we were brought to safety. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Passage 10 (2023-2024学年高二下·河北石家庄·期末) The Mango Tree—A Friend of All It was a usual cheerful and playful day for Dorothy.
