Her voyage began at 14, volunteering at a food shelter. While packing boxes with canned goods for needy families, Lauren detected a substantial shortage: fresh vegetables. This observation sparked an idea that soon grew into a community-wide initiative. Lauren pictured transforming part of her family’s 150-acre farm into a garden committed to growing produce for local families. Her proposal was met with a hint of concern from her mother, Katie Schroeder. While supportive, she also foresaw the extensive labor involved. Despite the agricultural background — her family typically planted soybeans and corn — vegetable cultivation was a novel pursuit. Nevertheless, Lauren was eager to tackle the nutritional deficiency she had uncovered. The hard work began in earnest. Not discouraged by potential obstacles, Lauren dived into research to be a seasoned vegetable cultivator and secured a grant (拨款) from the National FFA Organization to cover initial costs. Subsequently, she spent two to three hours daily watering her crops by hand through the hot Iowa summers, sandwiching this commitment between softball practices. Furthermore, she carefully tended to her garden, combating weeds and harvesting crops, with green beans proving particularly challenging. Eventually, with assistance from her younger brothers and sisters, Lauren’s half-acre garden produced 15 varieties of vegetables. In its first year, the garden generated 40 pounds of produce, benefiting food banks, nursing homes, and soup kitchens. Motivated by the early achievements, Lauren doubled the garden’s size. To date, she has donated over 7,000 pounds of produce, valued at approximately $15,000, commanding community respect. Her work has found a deep echo among others, notably a mother from a local shelter who was grateful for the fresh food that reminded her children of home. Lauren’s inspiration is straightforward yet deep-seated. “I wanted to have something that would impact people,” she told KWQC. Her actions demonstrate her belief in the power of community and the joy obtained from helping others — a feeling that will undoubtedly shape her future initiatives. 4. Why did Lauren initiate the community garden? A. To pursue a new hobby. B. To explore plant cultivation. C. To fill a food shelter’s vegetable gap. D. To gain recognition in her community. 5. How did Lauren overcome her lack of experience in vegetable farming? A. By doing trial and error. B. By conducting thorough research. C. By engaging in fundraising activities. D. By maintaining consistent hard work 6. What do we know about Lauren in the initial process of vegetable cultivation? A. She was passionate and determined. B. She was inexperienced but creative. C. She was observant and popular. D. She was concerned but hardworking. 7. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Garden to Table: a Solo Effort B. Local Garden: Hope for the Globe C. Harvesting Hope: Community Growth D. Farming Fundamentals: a Teen’s Journey C Animals hibernate (冬眠) to conserve energy during cold weather or when food becomes scarce, slowing their heart rate and dropping their body temperature to as low as 5℃. This is only survivable if their blood continues to flow efficiently and supply oxygen to the body. We already know that red blood cells change shape to fit different pressures and blood vessel sizes. To investigate if something like this happens in the cells of hibernating animals to keep blood flowing, Gerald Kerth at the University of Greifswald in Germany and his colleagues turned to bats. They analyzed hundreds of thousands of red blood cells from common noctule bats, which hibernate and Egyptian fruit bats, which don’t, along with cells from people. The researchers found that for all three species, red blood cells became less flexible and stickier as temperatures dropped from 37℃ to 23℃. But when they cooled the cells even further to 10℃, the bat cells continued this metamorphosis, whereas the human cells did not. Indeed, the bat cells — even those of non-hibernating bats, which probably maintained the evolutionary capacity — continued to become thick, stiff and functional even at very low temperatures. This might be slowing down the cells as they pass through the tiny vessels in the muscles and lungs, making them highly efficient at exchanging gases, like oxygen, throughout the body. “It is like how when you take your time at the supermarket instead of being rushed, you can really fill up your basket,” says Kerth. Exactly how this structural change happens is still unclear, but the team guesses that the mechanical properties of the bat red blood cell membranes (细胞膜) play a key role. The findings suggest that drugs could one day include human red blood cell membranes to imitate the way bat membranes react to the cold, says Kerth. In the more distant future, hibernation could also allow for efficient long-distance space travel, requiring minimal food and other resources while preserving mental health during the journey. “There are benefits of putting humans at low temperature during space flight,” says Kerth. 8. What did Gerald Kerth’s study focus on? A. Blood flow. B. Blood vessel sizes. C. Red blood cells. D. Different pressures. 9. What does the underlined word “metamorphosis” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Change. B. Growth. C. Damage. D. Movement. 10. Why does Kerth mention shopping at a supermarket? A. To prove the evolutionary capacity of bats. B. To show the role of red blood cell membranes. C. To indicate how the structural change happens. D. To illustrate the efficiency of exchanging gases. 11. How will hibernation help long-space travel? A. By offering astronauts resources. B. By speeding up astronauts’ travel. C. By reducing resource consumption. D. By maintaining astronauts’ overall health. D Interacting with AI chatbots like ChatGPT can be fun and sometimes useful, but the next level of everyday AI goes beyond answering questions: AI agents carry out tasks for you. But what exactly is an AI agent? As a computer scientist, I offer this definition: AI agents are technological tools that can learn a lot about a given environment, and then — with a few simple prompts from a human — work to solve problems or perform specific tasks in that environment. Simple AI agents can be taught to reply to standard questions sent over email. More advanced ones can book airline and hotel tickets for transcontinental business trips. Take Google’s Project Mariner as a typical example. Recently, Google demonstrated it to reporters. It’s a browser extension for Chrome that can reason about the text and images on your screen. In the demonstration, the agent helped plan a meal by adding items to a shopping cart on a grocery chain’s website, even finding substitutes when certain ingredients were not available. A person still needs to be involved to finalize the purchase, but the agent can be instructed to take all of the necessary steps up to that point. Actually, many of today’s AI agents tend to be utility (实用) based, meaning they give more consideration to how to achieve their goals by themselves. They weigh the risks and benefits of each possible approach before deciding how to proceed. They are also capable of considering goals that conflict with each other and deciding which one is more important to achieve. They go beyond goal-based agents by prioritizing their users’ unique preferences. However, a breach (违反) of an AI agent’s system could cause private information about your life and finances to fall into the wrong hands. Are you OK taking these risks if it means that agents can save you some work? What happens when AI agents make a poor choice, or a choice that its user would disagree with? Currently, developers of AI agents are keeping humans in the loop, making sure people have an opportunity to check an agent’s work before any final decisions are made. 12. What is an AI agent according to the passage? A. A chatbot responding to diverse questions. B. A technology enabling AI chatbots to perform complex tasks. C. A device solving problems by replying to standard questions. D. A tool learning environments and carrying out tasks with human guidance. 13. What’s special about Google’s Project Mariner from paragraph 3? A. It can answer standard questions over email. B. It can analyse and judge browser-page content. C. It can book airline and hotel tickets on its own. D. It can finalize a purchase on a grocery chain’s website. 14. How do utility-based AI agents differ from goal-based agents? A. They put what the users prefer first. B. They pay little attention to how to achieve the goals. C. They can integrate goals that conflict with each other. D. They weigh benefits over risks when making decisions. 15. What is the purpose of keeping humans in the loop when using AI agents? A. Let users monitor AI decisions. B. Reduce AI system-hacking risks. C. Stop AI agents accessing sensitive data. D. Teach AI agents to make accurate choices. During puberty (青春期), your body goes through many changes, and you start forming a body image — how you see, think, and feel about your body’s size, shape, and weight, or specific features like your nose. ____16____ For instance, you may believe your nose is too big or too small, even though it looks perfectly normal. ____17____ One major influence is peer (同龄人) pressure. Your friends might make casual jokes about your appearance, or you might compare yourself to them and feel they look better. Such experiences can harm the way you view yourself. Another powerful influence is the media, which often promotes a narrow, ideal body type. For example, if fair skin is portrayed as beautiful, you may feel insecure if you don’t match that ideal. Developing a negative body image can lead to unhealthy behaviors such as extreme dieting, overexercising, or even risky plastic surgeries. ___18___ When you focus too much on appearance, you may forget to appreciate other great things about yourself, such as your talents and personality. To build a positive body image, it’s essential to remember that no perfect body exists, as beauty standards are always changing. Models and celebrities may appear flawless in the media, but much of their appearance is due to makeup, angles, lighting, and editing. _____19_____ Rather than focusing on appearances, value people for their true selves. By surrounding yourself with positive influences and avoiding comments on looks, you can redirect your attention from self-criticism. ____20____ Over time, you’ll build inner confidence and develop a healthier, more accepting relationship with your body. A. Many factors shape your body image. B. It also lowers your overall life satisfaction. C. However, your true beauty lies within your heart. D. External judgement can be a double-edged sword. E. Emily was an ordinary teenager with an extraordinary passion for the environment. She had always been fascinated by nature and spent most of her weekends exploring the nearby woods and streams. But as she grew older, Emily noticed something alarming—the once beautiful greenery was slowly dying. The trees were wilting (枯萎), the rivers were polluted, and the air quality was worsening. Determined to save her beloved town, Emily decided to take action. Emily started by educating herself about environmental issues. She read books, attended workshops, and even reached out to local experts. Armed with knowledge, she launched a campaign called “Green Future”. Her first step was to organize a community cleanup event at the local park. She put up posters, made announcements on social media, and even knocked on doors to spread the word. To her delight, many residents showed up with gloves and trash bags in hand. Together, they collected tons of litter that day, making a noticeable difference. However, not everyone was thrilled about Emily’s initiative. Mr. Johnson, the owner of the largest factory in town, saw her efforts as a threat to his business. His factory was one of the main sources of pollution, and he didn’t want any changes that could affect his profit. He began spreading rumors(谣言) that Emily was just a young woman who didn’t understand how things worked in the real world. Some people started to believe him, and Emily’s campaign faced resistance. Despite the challenges, Emily refused to give up. She knew that education was key to changing people’s attitudes toward the environment. She organized school presentations and invited guest speakers to talk about sustainability. She also started a recycling program at her school, which gained support from both students and teachers. Slowly but surely, more people began to join her cause. Even some of Mr. Johnson’s employees expressed their concern about the working conditions and the state of the environment. One day, Emily was invited to attend a town hall meeting for new environmental policy. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ With the new policy in place, the town began to change. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 2023级高二学年下学期期中考试 英语试题 分值:150分 时长:120分钟 第一部分 听力 (共两节,满分30分) 第一节 (共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。 1. C To fill a food shelter’s vegetable gap. A Change. B. Growth. C. Damage. D. Movement. C 9. A 10. D 11. 由文章第二段中“We already know that red blood cells change shape to fit different pressures and blood vessel sizes. To investigate if something like this happens in the cells of hibernating animals to keep blood flowing, Gerald Kerth at the University of Greifswald in Germany and his colleagues turned to bats. (我们已经知道红细胞会改变形状以适应不同的压力和血管大小。为了调查冬眠动物的细胞中是否发生了类似的事情以保持血液流动,德国格赖夫斯瓦尔德大学的杰拉尔德·克思和他的同事们转而研究蝙蝠)”可知,因此,杰拉尔德·克思的研究重点是红细胞。故选C。 【9题详解】 词句猜测题。由第三段“The researchers found that for all three species, red blood cells became less flexible and stickier as temperatures dropped from 37℃ to 23℃. But when they cooled the cells even further to 10℃, the bat cells continued this metamorphosis, whereas the human cells did not. 故选A。 由倒数第三段中“This might be slowing down the cells as they pass through the tiny vessels in the muscles and lungs, making them highly efficient at exchanging gases, like oxygen, throughout the body. (这可能会使细胞在通过肌肉和肺部的微小血管时速度减慢,从而使它们在全身高效地进行气体交换,比如氧气交换)”和倒数第二段中““It is like how when you take your time at the supermarket instead of being rushed, you can really fill up your basket,” says Kerth. (克思说:“这就好比你在超市不慌不忙,而不是匆匆忙忙,这样你就能真正装满你的购物篮。” )”可知,克思提到在超市购物是为了说明气体交换的效率。故选D。 【11题详解】 细节理解题。由最后一段中“In the more distant future, hibernation could also allow for efficient long-distance space travel, requiring minimal food and other resources while preserving mental health during the journey. (在更遥远的未来,冬眠还有可能实现高效的长途太空旅行,在旅途中只需极少的食物和其他资源,同时还能保持心理健康)”可知,冬眠可以通过减少资源消耗来帮助长途太空旅行。故选C。 D Interacting with AI chatbots like ChatGPT can be fun and sometimes useful, but the next level of everyday AI goes beyond answering questions: AI agents carry out tasks for you. 14 How do utility-based AI agents differ from goal-based agents? 12. D 13. B 14. A 15. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One day, Emily was invited to attend a town hall meeting for a new environmental policy. This was her big chance to make a difference. With trembling hands but a determined heart, she presented her case, backed by facts and proofs from other community members. Her speech was convincing, and many in the audience were moved by her dedication and the undeniable evidence she provided. After much debate, the town council voted in favor of stricter environmental regulations and the new environmental policy was finally carried out. With the new policy in place, the town began to change. The factory had to set up modern purification systems, and other businesses followed suit. People became more conscious of their waste and started adopting eco-friendly practices. The park was revitalized, new trees were planted, and wildlife returned. Emily’s efforts had paid off, and she was called as the “Green Hero” of her town. She continued to advocate for the environment, knowing that one person’s actions can indeed make a difference. 1】Her speech was convincing, and many in the audience were moved by her dedication and the undeniable evidence she provided.(运用了省略that的定语从句 ) 【高分句型 2】She continued to advocate for the environment, knowing that one person’s actions can indeed make a difference.(运用了现在分词作状语 ) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
