When an earthquake hit Southern California on Monday, humans followed the usual action: drop, cover and hold on. But one group of elephants at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park had their own plan—circle up and stand together. One minute the elephants were playing in the sun; the next, they were reacting as the ground began to shake. The three adults looked around them and quickly stayed together, forming a circle around two 7-year-old ones. Experts call this behavior an “alert (警觉) circle,” an action elephants show when they sense a danger.
“Elephants are highly social, they take care of each other,” says Plotnik, a professor at Hunter College in New York who studies elephant behavior. Plotnik says this instinct (本能) to protect one another is the most important of the alert circle, a way for staying together when danger is near. “They stay together, the adults on the outside facing out, and then they’ll push the younger ones into the middle,” he says.
Elephants can sense the earthquake through their feet and ears, telling them the possible danger. “But earthquakes aren’t the only thing they can sense: Something similar happened during the 2006 tsunami (海啸) in Southeast Asia,” Plotnik says. “I’ve heard stories of elephants acting to the large tsunami of Thailand, for example, of elephants going up to higher ground with other elephants. These fast behaviors show the social nature of elephants,” Plotnik says. But he warns that elephants’ living in today’s world requires more than just instinct, there’s still much we don’t understand about how they avoid dangers. “Learning more,” he says, “is key to protecting these endangered animals.”
The Asian and African elephants are in great danger of dying out, and it’s important that we continue to learn more about their behavior if we’re going to come up with ways to protect them in the wild.

Confucius was a famous teacher who was born in 551 BC. This period was a dangerous time in China’s history. Many rulers were fighting across the country. Life was difficult for the poor. They worked hard for their rulers and received little money in return.

Although at that time he became very famous among China’s lower classes, the rulers never accepted his teachings. Self-discipline and education didn’t sound as good to them as power and wealth.

Have a question you want to ask Dear Life Kit? Share it here. We’re looking for your problems. Dear Life Kit is an advice column (专栏), where experts answer questions about relationships, work culture and more. These questions were answered by friendship coaches Jackson and Franco.
Dear Life Kit,
I made friends with a neighbor about a year ago. We became good friends and have a lot in common. However, she texts me nonstop—starting with a “good morning” text, then lots of messages about every detail (细节) of her day, and ending with a “good night” text. Sometimes I don’t answer, but it doesn’t stop her. I want to be this person’s friend, but I wish we could just talk in person. I’m afraid saying something will hurt her feelings. I don’t want to end the friendship, but she’s driving me away. What should I do?
—Sad
Jackson: Let your friend know you’re not going to text back as much, and how the texting makes you feel. Maybe tell her, “Sorry if I’m not replying as much as you’d like. I actually prefer getting together in person. When I get messages throughout the day, it makes me worried.” Hopefully, without telling her directly, she can pick up the subtext, which is: “Girl, I’m gonna need you to stop blowing up my phone.”
Franco: Remind yourself what values you have in friendship. Honesty? Openness? You’re afraid the friendship is going to end if you bring up this problem, but it is sure to end if you don’t bring up the problem. So at least give it a chance. Sometimes you have to do what feels cruel, but in fact it is kind. It will hurt her feelings a lot more if you don’t give her a chance to repair it. At the same time, this is a chance for your friend to say, “OK, I feel a little embarrassed, but I hear you.”
36. If you have a question about friendship, who will answer you on Dear Life Kit?

Once there lived a king who liked nothing better than collecting treasure. He got a lot of it and kept it locked in huge rooms under his palace. To pay for all this, the people were heavily taxed (征税). There were bread taxes, water taxes, head taxes and so on. The people became so poor that many couldn’t afford food. The king didn’t care what went on outside. If anyone tried to tell him, he just talked about something else, or walked away.
One day, the king’s most trusted servant was caught for picking the lock of the treasury door. This warned the king that his treasure was no longer safe. He chose four of his best soldiers to guard the door of the treasury. But one night he had a terrible nightmare. He dreamed that the guards themselves were breaking in and running away with his treasure. “How can we stop the guards from stealing the treasure?” He asked the prime minister. “We’ll put more soldiers to guard the guards,” said the prime minister. Each time the king had his nightmare (噩梦), he would send more guards to guard the guards. The king became more worried than ever. He didn’t want to eat anything and couldn’t sleep at night.
About this time, a young man named Carib arrived at the palace and said he was an engineer and an inventor. He could offer help. The king agreed. 故填was introduced。
根据时间状语“Since then”应该用现在完成时,主语music therapy是第三人称单数,助动词用has,develop的过去分词为developed。故填has developed。
主语he是第三人称单数,be动词用was,sit的行在分词形式为sitting。故填was sitting。

When I get messages throughout the day, it makes me worried.”
根据“Let your friend know you’re not going to text back as much, and how the texting makes you feel.”以及“You’re afraid the friendship is going to end if you bring up this problem, but it is sure to end if you don’t bring up the problem. So at least give it a chance.” Talk to her honestly about the problem。

Then he started to rebuild the door of the treasury and promised to finish it in six months. But as he was using many secret inventions, he must work alone.
