I was one of those children who enjoyed counting to ten in different languages while I brushed my teeth. When I went to university, I chose to major in French and Spanish. I cannot say I studied particularly hard; though I did get to live in Paris and then Barcelona, where I had many opportunities to pursue my various interests and hobbies.
I was frequently asked about what I planned to “do” with my language degree, and it wasn’t until after a decade of thinking that I finally had a satisfying response. I always take exception to the idea that language is just a “tool” — a means to ask for directions or defend yourself when you have trouble with the locals. It depresses me to hear people say that AI will make language learning pointless. To me, language is not just something to be used. It shapes the way we perceive and experience the world.
This is not a novel insight. Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf were made famous by the film Arrival. They proposed that the structure of language informs the thinking style and world view of its speakers, and that language determines how we see the world. The 18th-century German Romantic philosopher Johann Georg Hamann also wrote that the features of a people’s language will correspond to the direction of their mentality.
It’s a matter of debate as to whether speakers of Guugu Yimithirr, a native language in Australia, have a better sense of navigation (导航) because of their language. I think it does. Where we (English speakers) use left and right, forward and back, speakers of this language use north, south, east and west. To do this, they must know where north is at all times. They orient (确定方位)themselves more skillfully than we do.
To learn another language is not just to get by a bit more easily when you go on holiday. It’s to learn to perceive the world differently, to think differently, and even to be someone different. And that, in turn, throws light on your native language, your culture and yourself.
41. What can we know about the author?
A. He had a clear career plan. B. He is a language enthusiast.
C. He dislikes living in different cities. D. He struggled to achieve his college degree.
42. What does the underlined phrase “take exception to” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Try out. B. Hit upon. C. Put forward. D. Disapprove of.
43. Why does the author mention different historical figures in paragraph 3?
A. To compare their views on language. B. To honor their contributions.
C. To support his argument. D. To explain a new insight.
44. What does the author try to explain about language in paragraph 4?
A. Its guiding role in our life. B. Its development throughout history.
C. Its importance in social interaction. D. Its impact on our cultural identities.
45. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Language Is Key to Learning B. Language Shapes Our Reality
C. Environments Affect Our World View D. Cultures Promote Emotional Expression
【答案】41. B 42. D 43. C 44. A 45. B

【导语】这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了学习语言的重要性,它塑造了我们看待世界的方式,影响了我们的思维方式和世界观。

推理判断题。根据第一段中“I was one of those children who enjoyed counting to ten in different languages while I brushed my teeth. When I went to university, I chose to major in French and Spanish.(我是那种喜欢一边刷牙一边用不同的语言从一数到十的孩子。当我上大学时,我选择了法语和西班牙语专业)”可知,作者从小就喜欢用不同语言数数,大学还选择了法语和西班牙语专业,这表明他是一个语言爱好者。故选B项。
【42题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线单词后文“It depresses me to hear people say that AI will make language learning pointless. To me, language is not just something to be used.(听到有人说人工智能会让语言学习变得毫无意义,我感到很沮丧。对我来说,语言不仅仅是用来使用的)”可知,作者不认同语言只是一种“工具”这种观点,所以“take exception to”意思是“不赞成;反对”,与D选项“Disapprove of.( 不赞成)”意思相近。故选D项。
【43题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段作者提出“To me, language is not just something to be used. It shapes the way we perceive and experience the world.(对我来说,语言不仅仅是被使用的东西,它塑造了我们感知和体验世界的方式)”以及第三段提到 Edward Sapir、Benjamin Lee Whorf以及Johann Georg Hamann等历史人物,他们的观点都表明语言与思维方式和世界观有关,这是在支持作者的观点。故选C项。
【44题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“Where we (English speakers) use left and right, forward and back, speakers of this language use north, south, east and west. To do this, they must know where north is at all times. They orient (确定方位) themselves more skillfully than we do.(我们(说英语的人)用“左”和“右”、“前”和“后”,而说英语的人用“北”、“南”、“东”和“西”。要做到这一点,它们必须时刻知道北方在哪里。他们比我们更有技巧地定位自己)”可知,澳大利亚本土语言Guugu Yimithirr的使用者因为语言的原因,在导航方面比说英语的人更有优势,这说明语言在生活中起到了指导作用,即语言对我们的生活有引导作用。故选A项。

A trust is a legal arrangement where one party (the trustee) holds and manages assets (资产) on behalf of another party (the beneficiary). For example, a wealthy individual might set up a trust to ensure that their children win receive financial support in the future. The trustee, often a bank or a professional financial institution, is responsible for making sure the assets are invested wisely and distributed according to the terms of the trust. Trusts can protect assets, provide for family members, and even offer tax benefits.
Interest is the amount charged for borrowing money or the return earned on an investment. When you deposit money in a bank, the bank pays you interest as a reward for letting them use your funds. On the other hand, when you take out a loan, you have to pay interest to the lender. There are two main types of interest: simple interest/and compound interest. Simple interest is calculated only on the principal amount, while compound interest is calculated on the principal and the accumulated interest over time. For instance, if you deposit $1000 in a bank with an annual interest rate of 5% simple interest, you will earn $50 each year. But with compound interest, the amount you earn will increase every year as the interest is added to the principal and then interest is calculated on the new total.
A future is a financial contract obligating the buyer to purchase an asset or the seller to sell an asset, such as a commodity or a financial instrument at a predetermined future date and price. Futures are used for two main purposes: hedging and speculation. A farmer might use futures contracts to lock in the price of their crops in advance, protecting themselves from price drops. This is hedging. Speculators, on the other hand, try to make a profit by predicting the future price movements of the underlying asset. They might buy a futures contract if they think the price will go up and sell it at a higher price later.
These three concepts-trust, interest, and future - play crucial roles in the financial world, affecting everything from personal savings and loans to large-scale investment strategies.

A. To use the assets for personal gain.
B. To possess and administer assets on behalf of the recipient.
C. To loan the assets to other parties.
D. To invest all the assets in high-risk projects.
47. How does simple interest diverge from compound interest?
A. Simple interest is computed on the principal and accumulated interest, while compound interest is computed merely on the principal.
B Simple interest is always higher than compound interest.
C. Simple interest is computed solely on the principal, while compound interest is computed on the principal and the accumulated interest over a period of time.
D. Compound interest remains unaffected by the duration, while simple interest is influenced by it.

Lao Zi once said, “Care about what other people think and you will always be their prisoner.”
People-pleasing, or seeking self-worth through others’ approval, is unproductive and an exhausting way to go through life. Why do we allow what others think of us to have so much power over how we feel about ourselves? If it’s true that you can’t please all people all of the time, wouldn’t it make sense to stop trying?
Unfortunately, sense often isn’t driving our behavior. For social beings who desire love and belonging, wanting to be liked, and caring about the effect we have on others, is healthy and allows us to make connections. However, where we get into trouble is when our self- worth is dependent on whether we win someone’s approval or not.
This need to be liked can be traced back to when we were children and were completely dependent on others to take care of us: Small children are not just learning how to walk and communicate, they are also trying to learn how the world works. We learn about who we are and what is expected of us based on interactions with others so, to a four-year-old, if Mommy or Daddy doesn’t like him or her, there is the danger that they will abandon them. We need to understand that when we desperately want someone to approve of us, it’s being driven by that little kid part of us that is still afraid of being abandoned.
As you become more capable of providing yourself with the approval you seek, your need for external approval will start to disappear, leaving you stronger, more confident, and yes, happier in your life. Imagine how much time we lose each moment we restrain our authentic selves in an effort to be liked.
If we base our worth on the opinions of others, we cheat ourselves of the power to shape our experiences and embrace life not only for others but also for ourselves, because ultimately, there is no difference. So embrace the cliché (老话) and love yourself as you’ll not regret it.
51. What can we conclude from Lao Zi’s quotation?
A. We should see through other people’s attempt to make a prisoner of us.
B We can never really please other people even if we try as hard as we can.
C. We can never be truly free if we care about others’ opinion of us.
D. We should care about other people’s view as much as they care about our own.
52 What will happen if we base our self-worth on other people’s approval?
A. Our desire to be loved will be fulled
B. Our Identity as social beings will be affected.
C. Our life will be unfruitful and exhausting.
D. Our sense of self will be sharpened and enhanced.
53. What may be the reason for our need to be liked or approved of?
A. Our desperate longing for interactions with others.
B. Our understanding of the workings of the world.
C. Our knowledge about the pain of being abandoned.
D. Our early childhood fear of being abandoned.
54. What can we do when we become better able to provide ourselves with the desired approval?
A. Enjoy a happier life. B. Exercise self-restraint.
C. Receive more external approval. D. Strengthen our power of imagination.
55. What does the author advise us to do in the last paragraph?
A. Embrace life for others. B. Love ourselves as we are.
C. See our experiences as our wealth. D. Base our worth on others’ opinions.

In the world of finance, three terms stand out significantly: trust, interest, and future. Understanding them can open the door to a better comprehension of how the financial system works.
Trust, in a financial context, is more than just a simple belief.
46. What is the main responsibility of a trustee in a trust?
B. Simple interest is always higher than compound interest.
C. Simple interest is computed solely on the principal, while compound interest is computed on the principal and the accumulated interest over a period of time.
D. Compound interest remains unaffected by the duration, while simple interest is influenced by it.
48. Why would a farmer employ futures contracts?
A. To generate substantial profits by speculating on price increases.
B. To fix the price of their crops in advance and avoid price declines.
C. To obtain a loan from the futures market.
D. To acquire more land using the futures as security.

B. We can never really please other people even if we try as hard as we can.
C. We can never be truly free if we care about others’ opinion of us.
D. We should care about other people’s view as much as they care about our own.
52. What will happen if we base our self-worth on other people’s approval?
