Passage 3
(23-24高二下·湖北武汉·期末)It’s hard to say what is normal and what is weird where food is concerned — it all depends on the taste of the individual and which part of the world you come from. One person’s nightmare is another person’s delicacy. Here are a few of the strangest types of food from around the world.
Haggis (Scotland)
A world-famous dish, haggis is made from the parts of a sheep many people would throw away. The heart, lungs and liver are mixed together with onion, spices and oatmeal, then put inside a sheep’s stomach and boiled for three hours.
Sannakji (Korea)
Now that Japanese sushi is popular around the world, many people are used to eating raw fish. But Sannakji is different. It consists of octopus which is sliced up while alive. The octopus is then cooked in sesame oil and served with a dipping sauce. If you don’t chew the octopus carefully, it’s possible that the tiny suction cups on tentacles(触须) can stick to your throat.
Fugu (Japan)
Fugu is a famous Japanese fish filled with enough of the poison substance to be deadly. Chefs have to be trained before they can prepare the fish. Fugu actually tastes quite mild. The excitement is in surviving the experiences of eating it.
Frogs’ legs (France)
Frogs’legs are a popular dish in France, usually served with garlic. They’re said to taste like chicken, but some people find them to be too chewy. If you’re feeling brave, you can try frogs’ legs for yourself — just be sure to remove the skin and bones before you eat them.
7. What do you need to pay attention to while eating Sannakji?
A. Eating carefully and slowly. B. Boiling it with dipping sauce.
C. Slicing up the dead octopus. D. Preparing a cup of sesame oil.
8. Which dish offers diners a thrill of danger?
A. Haggis from Scotland. B. Sannakji from Korea.
C. Fugu from Japan. D. Frogs’legs from France.
9. Where does this text probably come from?
A. A special menu. B. A cooking recipe.
C. A food magazine. D. A nutrition guidebook.
Passage 4
(23-24高二下·湖南邵阳·期末)Every delicious steak you have ever enjoyed eating started with a good cut of meat. However, picking that perfect cut can be challenging — supermarkets are flooded with options, and it is not as straightforward as simply choosing the one with the highest price tag. Follow this guide for some advice.
Tenderloin (US), Fillet (UK), Eye Fillet (AUS/NZ)
A classic cut, the tenderloin comes from the strip of muscle tucked against the backbone of the animal. As this muscle does not do much work, this is the tenderest cut of beef — which also makes it the most expensive, and arguably the most desirable. We say “arguably” because, while the tenderloin is supremely lean and a favorite of those who love their steak to melt in their mouth, it can also be tasteless. Filet mignon, widely referred to as the creme (精华) dela creme of all steak cuts, is cut from the very tip of the tenderloin.
Ribeye (US/UK), Scotch fillet (AUS/NZ)
This cut, from the rib section of the animal, comes with an abundance of rich marbling. The ribeye won’t give you that same “melt-in-your-mouth” feeling, but it is still one of the tenderest cuts available. Differently, the ribeye is cooked with the bone in, while the Scotch fillet is not.
Strip (US), Sirloin (UK), Porterhouse (AUS/NZ)
Coming from the hindquarter of the animal, the strip is not quite as tender as the tenderloin, or loaded with quite as much flavor as the ribeye, but for many steak lovers, it is just right. The best part is that because this all-rounder has a bit more chew and a bit less marbling than those cuts, it tends to be less expensive.
T-bone
Can’t decide between the tenderloin and the strip? Why not both? The T-bone is cut with strip on one side of a bone, and tenderloin on the other. With two very different textures (口感) and flavors, the T-bone gets the best of both worlds, but it can also be more difficult to cook. The meat closer to the bone is slower to cook than the rest of the steak.
10. What can we know about the steaks from the passage?
A. It usually takes little time to cook T-bone.
B. All things considered, Ribeye is the best.
C. A good cut only means the most expensive one.
D. It's not a piece of cake to pick a perfect cut.
11. What makes the tenderloin the most expensive part among the steak?
A. Different textures. B. The tenderest cut.
C. Rich marbling. D. Much flavor.
12. Where can the passage be taken from?
A. A science daily. B. An agricultural journal.
C. A food magazine. D. A reading website.

Passage 9
(23-24高二下·广东佛山·期末)Feeling burned out and looking for reasons to work less? A new study shows that working nights and volatile(不稳定的) schedules in young adulthood can leave you to suffer from depression and poor health in middle age.
The research examined the work schedules and sleep patterns of more than 7,000 Americans over three decades, from the ages of 22 through 50. To the surprise of the study’s author, New York University professor Wen-Jui Han, only one-quarter of the participants worked traditional daytime hours. The remainder worked variable hours. Those with volatile work schedules reported a greater likelihood of poor health and depression at age 50 than those with more stable schedules.
“Our work now is making us sick and poor,” Han said in an interview. “Work is supposed to allow us to acquire resources. But, for a lot of people, their work doesn’t allow them to do so. They actually become more and more miserable(悲惨的) over time.”
Dr. Alyson Myers, a professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, appreciated the new study’s focus on the connection between work schedules, sleep and poor health. The study findings confirmed what she sees in many of her diabetes(糖尿病) patients, who often get no more than five hours of sleep after they work night shifts.
Many of the participants in Han’s study who had volatile work schedules tended to have part-time jobs, in some cases multiple part-time jobs. “Unfortunately,” Myers said, “the trend for a lot of these people is that they have to work more than one job to survive.”
Han would like her research to promote conversations about ways of providing resources to help people live a happy and healthy life when they’re dog-tired both physically and emotionally because of their work.
25. What does Han’s study mainly tell us?
A. The significance of a healthy lifestyle.
B. The rising trend of working variable hours.
C. The long-term effects of unstable work schedules.
D. Some practical approaches to dealing with depression.
26. What is Myers’s attitude to people with volatile work schedules?
A. Understanding. B. Unconcerned. C. Doubtful. D. Critical.
27. What is Han’s expectation of her research?
A. To provide resources for the poor.
B. To help improve people’s well-being.
C. To raise awareness of healthy lifestyles.
D. To initiate dialogues between employees.

As a yam bean farmer, Uncle Green held a deep respect for education, coming from his own unfulfilled academic eagerness. (23-24高二下·江苏泰州·期末)Sia was 13 when she noticed the barefoot children of workers at a construction site. “Their feet were bare. Hard. Dirty. Bleeding.” reflects Sia. “They were just walking around just as it was an everyday practice.” It was then that Sia realized their lives were so different from hers.
Sia went back home and saw shoes piled up high — many of which hadn’t been worn for months. Then she rushed to distribute them to the children she saw at the building site. Later that year, with the help of her parents and community volunteers, Sia founded Sole Warriors, a charity committed to providing shoes to those in need, whose motto is: “Donate a sole(鞋), save a soul.”
The idea quickly grew. After she spread the word with posters, enquiries from people who wanted to help came flooding in. Now in its fifth year, the organization collects used shoes, refurbishes(翻新) it and donates the finished products to people in need. That need is endless. In the world, an estimated 300 million people can’t afford shoes. Of the nearly 24 billion shoes made every year, shockingly more than 90 percent end up in dustbins.
In its first distribution, Sole Warriors collected and gave out 700 pairs of shoes. Today that number rises to 28,000 across four countries. But the organization’s growth met with many challenges. When it came to looking for a company that would do the refurbishments free of charge, Sia faced one barrier after another before finding a partner. “Being a 13-year-old, I did face a lot of prejudice because people were less willing to hear what I say.” says Sia.

Passage 6
(24-25高二上·浙江嘉兴·期末)McGriff was in her second year of university when she read Half the Sky, which examines the unfair treatment of women in developing countries. She was shocked to learn that 129 million girls worldwide do not have access to school.
“In much of the world, women and girls are responsible for household duties,” said McGriff, “It’s seen that girls won’t ever be putting their education to use.” Additionally, many poor families can’t afford girls’ tuition fees, school supplies and uniforms(校服). Yet, studies have shown that providing free uniforms can reduce dropout rates by 16% and absenteeism by more than 35%. This simple solution took root in McGriff’s mind and started her journey helping girls transform their lives.
As she took an entrepreneurship(创业) class, she was tasked with creating a business or nonprofit for a class project, which reminded her of the idea of the school uniform. Soon she developed an idea. After conducting field research, McGriff returned home, presented her education project at entrepreneurship competitions and won $35, 000 in startup fund. Eventually she established her nonprofit, Style Her Empowered (SHE), to bring her vision to life.
That first year, the group hired local tailors and provided uniforms and school fees for65 girls. But they soon ran into a problem — the students were outgrowing quickly. To address this, McGriff’s team, together with local tailors and students, designed an innovative “growing uniform” which could be adjusted to fit a girl for up to three years, accommodating six different sizes.
Today, SHE serves girls in 20 rural villages in southern Togo, providing 1, 500 girls a year with free uniforms, school fees, supplies, tutoring, and much more. Once enrolled, students receive weekly tutoring. As a result, SHE’s students consistently pass their exams at higher rates than the national average. “Our students have increased their performance in school dramatically,” McGriff said. “If given the opportunity, they shine.”
21. What contributes to girls’ high dropout rates according to paragraph 2?
A. Financial difficulty. B. Family conflict.
C. Academic performance. D. School arrangement.

It all began in 2000, when reading ability among students in the Philippines remains low. In memory of his parents who were able to gift their children with education, Guanlao gathered whatever books he had around the house, and placed them outside with a sign that reading was free. What started as a 50-book display has grown dramatically over the years, thanks to a steady supply of books from donors, some of whom opted to stay anonymous. “They just leave boxes of books outside my house,” said Guanlao.
Called the Reading Club 2000, Guanlao’s library showcases a wide variety of books he hopes will inspire people, especially young curious minds to read. Books, believes Guanlao, need to live. (23-24高二下·浙江湖州·期末)It was 11 p. m. when Alex saw a woman standing by the railing on the Main Street Bridge, peering down at the rushing river below. Maybe she was fishing, Alex thought. He continued driving to his home for some tools as his friend’s car had broken down. Tools in hand, he climbed into his car.
Instead of taking a shortcut, though, he chose to head back over the bridge. Something about that woman didn’t sit right. Why would she be fishing this late at night in May when it was still cold in this city? As he crossed the bridge, Alex saw the woman standing in the same spot. He pulled a U-turn and parked his car with the hazards(警示灯) flashing, blocking one of the four lanes(车道). In case there was trouble, he hoped another driver would take note and help.
He stepped out and got a clearer picture of the scene. The woman was in her 20s, dressed in pants and a heavy coat. “Hey, what’s going on?” Alex called out. The woman didn’t answer or turn around. Then a switch seemingly went off. Without warning, she climbed onto the railing. Alex reached for her swiftly and exhausted all his strength to pull her off. Suddenly, the police arrived. Soon, the woman was taken to a hospital.

(23-24高二下·福建莆田·期末)Fifteen-year-old Sansa has been writing for eight years and has been working on a book for the past four years. Feeling stuck and unable to write, she started searching for writing groups in Los Angeles, looking for guidance. When she found WriteGirl, she was inspired.
Keren Taylor started WriteGirl in 2001 as a way to help teen girls who did not have access to creative writing programs. “Teen girls are incredibly vulnerable(脆弱的) and invisible.” Taylor said. “They really need to be lifted up and inspired.”
At WriteGirl, 400 women writers volunteer to mentor(指导) 700 teenagers a year. (23-24高二下·福建三明·期末)In Cedars, Pennsylvania, a cafe is giving people with different abilities, and their families a safe and inclusive space to shine. Created in 2022, the cafe was a response to the need in the community for programs that would enable youth with special needs who aged out of school programs to develop social and vocational skills in a nurturing environment.
The cafe was the brainchild of Pennsylvania mom Maureen Stanko, a teacher and musician. It started as a way for Isla to fulfill the volunteering requirements for her Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award but grew into an activity for the whole family. Mrs Jourdain and her husband have lost friends and family to cancer, which played a key role in them wanting to partake in the project. “Now every Sunday evening, I say ‘postcards, people’ and we all sit down around the kitchen table and write together. We thought it would be a nice way to boost the patients’ spirits,” Mrs Jourdain said.
She thought it was nice because they had got such a range of ages between them, so it was quite a variety of things that they wrote about or if they were all writing about the same thing, it was done in different ways.
“Sometimes we may write about something that we have attended. For example, last weekend, Isla went to see the Royal Shakespeare Company’s performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and she wrote about that. Sometimes it's more about the gardening and the weather and we may comment on the art or people on the postcard we are writing on.
The postcards are given to the charity From Me to You as part of its “donate a letter” scheme, which sees them read by the charity, filtered, repackaged and delivered to hospitals, cancer centres or individuals at home.
Mrs Jourdain said she hopes to “inspire” others to take part. “It’s so simple, but can have such an impact and I just think we need to reignite the love of a letter,” she said. “Something handwritten is so lovely and personal and cannot be replicated(复制) in an email or text.”

Passage 16
(23-24高二上·河南驻马店·期末)Shen Yue, 26, was born in East China’s Shandong province, a region that many people believe prioritizes secure, officially-budgeted positions such as civil service. However, Shen’s decision to dive into the unpredictable world of full-time video blogging after graduating in 2019, with a focus on the popular game League of Legends (LOL), raised eyebrows.
Initially, Shen’s family supported his career choice, but when he struggled to make ends meet within the first year, they began to advise him to seek a more secure job. But Shen remained determined and persisted with his chosen path.
A turning point in Shen’s career occurred at the start of this year when he posted a seemingly odd video, replacing the D and F keys on a keyboard, crucial for in-game character actions, with a foot pedal. Describing it as a “pointless invention” created for fun, Shen admitted that the video initially received limited attention. But a message from a viewer who had lost an arm in a car accident changed everything. The viewer, who relied on one hand to play games, sought guidance on creating a similar foot pedal. “I hadn’t realized that there would be disabled players in need of this kind of pedal,” Shen said. Despite his limited knowledge of circuit-building, he managed to produce 10 different foot pedals and traveled to Chongqing to personally assist the player in installation(安装), gaining valuable feedback.
“Due to physical limitations, this player could only operate two simple game characters,” Shen explained. However, with this device, which allows the player to pedal with his foot, he can now play games like a regular person using a keyboard.
Recognizing the diverse needs of disabled players nationwide, Shen started providing free assistance in making these pedals. The continuous feedback within the community encouraged Shen to improve his inventions constantly.

(23-24高二下·河南许昌·期末)It was the summer of 1979, Laurie, my wife, and I were excited to spend two weeks exploring Africa. Our adventures led us to a city called Tétouan in Morocco. We were walking in the marketplace when I saw her.
She was about 20 feet from us, lying flat on her stomach, pulling herself across the streets. Her hands were dirty and bloodied, covered with cuts. People were rushing past her. She was almost invisible to everyone around her. The crowd was sweeping us down the street, little fazed by the woman’s situation.
“We have to do something,” I said to Laurie. She nodded. We looked up and down the street, searching for something to buy her, anything with wheels. But before we could figure out a way to help her, she was gone.

Passage 18
(24-25高二上·湖南长沙·期末)For children, gifts are usually one of the most exciting parts of Christmas. While opening presents is thrilling, some kids find happiness in giving rather than receiving. For 12-year-old Jonathan Werner, this is certainly the case. Learning that his father grew up in the foster(领养) system and didn’t have much of a Christmas, Werner from Minnesota decided to prepare gifts and basic supplies for children in foster families and domestic violence shelters in four counties.
To do so, Werner sold bags of flavored popcorn and chocolate-coated pretzels(双圈饼干) , setting a table by the entrance of big stores during the fall. “I’m proud of what he chose to do and the number of people that he can reach with this project,” his dad, Steven Kolk, told Good Morning America.
After selling over $56,000 in popcorn, he headed to multiple stores to pick gifts for 138 children. He chose his presents based on letters from the children and lists that social workers shared with him. “He reads every kid’s letter and tries to find something he thinks they are specifically going to like,” Werner’s mother said.
This year, he bought over 60,000 presents, from clothes to Barbie dolls and LEGO sets. He estimated the total to be around $11,300. Once the shopping was done, he set up a gift-wrapping workshop at home. They are deserved to be loved and appreciated,” said Werner, whose goal is to get Christmas gifts for every foster child in Minnesota.

In an effort to foster connections with her neighbors, Kristin hosted a convivial gathering. During the event, a mishap occurred when a delivery individual mistakenly placed one of the picnic tables in her front yard. Post-party, Kristin, enamored with the color turquoise, decided to repaint the misplaced table in her favorite hue and positioned it near the sidewalk.
This vibrant table quickly became the epicenter of Kristin's family life, serving as a spot for leisurely activities such as games, crafts, and snacks. Kristin remarks, “We got intentional about where we spent our time. We became ‘front yard people.’”
As the allure of the turquoise table drew in passersby, neighbors began to make their acquaintance and engage in casual conversations. Kristin extended invitations for coffee or iced tea, seated at the table. Soon, the idea spread, with neighbors inquiring about replicating the picnic table concept in their own yards. Thus, a grassroots movement was ignited, as Kristin describes, "It was a simple way to slow down and connect with others." The table, with its inviting nature, became a communal hub.
Often, individuals are reluctant to extend invitations into their pri$$

C. To raise awareness of healthy lifestyles.

Passage 1
(24-25高二上·河北邯郸·期中)“A good book is easy to find. ” That is the message on a sign at Hernando Guanlao’s home in the Makati area of Manila, the capital of the Philippines.
Guanlao has turned his home into a free public library. Visitors can borrow the books inside for free. Guanlao hopes his library will inspire people to read, especially the young. The 72-year-old said that his library includes books that all students can enjoy — from young children in kindergarten to older students in grade 12.
Guanlao’s library has books for readers of all interests. He spoke to reporters at his home, which is filled with thousands of available books.
He calls his library Reading Club 2000. It contains many different kinds of books, or genres (体裁) . Genre is a group of artistic, musical, or literary works that share a particular style, form, or content. Some genres in literature are poetry, non-fiction (or real stories) , and fiction (or imaginary stories) . Then there are “sub-genres” such as cookbooks, science fiction, and mystery, to name just a few.
He started his library more than 20 years ago when he set 50 books on the walkway in front of his home. Guanlao’s collection has grown greatly over the years — thanks to a continuous supply of books from donors.
Speaking of donors, he said, “They just leave boxes of books outside my house.” He has also started donating books himself. He sends reading materials to public schools in far-away communities.
Guanlao’s efforts come at a time when reading ability among students in the Philippines remains low. The Programme for International Student Assessment reports that reading scores in the Philippines are among the lowest in the world. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development runs that programme. Students in the Philippines are also facing learning delays in math and science.
Guanlao is firm about his goals: “My mission(使命) is to give away used and donated books to others at no cost,” he said, “and to promote education through literature.”

A. He is a self-disciplined teacher. B. He has a strong sense of social responsibility.

Passage 3
(23-24高二下·江苏宿迁·期末)After having her second child, 35-year-old Eman Wagdy Selim felt that she had a bigger purpose in life. Although her background was in language and translation, the young Egyptian woman, with her husband’s support, had an idea to create a platform called AI Faraza to provide high-quality fruits and vegetables at competitive prices. 13. 推理判断题。根据第二段“The patient, Laurie Gulliksen, had been receiving inpatient chemotherapy (化疗) since December of 2022. During this time the staff became very close with her. On Friday, April 21, the patient received her last treatment and was scheduled to go home. The nurses wanted to celebrate this achievement and make it special so they purchased balloons, flowers, a card, and a gift, but most importantly, a bell for the patient to ring to signal the completion of her chemotherapy.

根据最后一段“DAISY awards are presented monthly in front of the nurse’s workmates, physicians, patients, and visitors. Each honoree receives a certificate praising her or him for being an “Extraordinary Nurse”. Passage 5
In recognition of her great influence, Sia was given the Diana Award in 2021. It’s one of the most remarkable honors a young person can receive for social action. But her work isn’t done. “Our goal has always been to touch a million feet,” she says.
17. Why does the author mention Sia’s visit to a construction site?
A. To display Sia’s generosity.
B. To arouse readers’ sympathy.

A. By urging governments to make joint efforts.
B. By donating refurbished shoes to those in need.
C. By collecting second-hand shoes from dustbins.
D. By searching for companies to make new shoes for free.
19. What difficulty did Sia have in developing the organization?
A. Their donation couldn’t meet people’s demand.
B. The process of refurbishment was too complicated.
C. Her request was rejected by quite a few companies.
D. Few people were willing to give away their old shoes.
20. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Being a socialist is Sia’s dream.
B. The Diana Award is awarded annually.
C. Sia felt totally satisfied with her social action.
D. Sia would not stop her work with Sole Warriors.
【答案】17. D 18. B 19. C 20. D

22. When did McGriff start her nonprofit organization?
A. After she analyzed the data of studies. B. When she learned about girls’ dropout rates.
C. When she won entrepreneurship competitions. D. After she read a book on girls’ unfair treatment.
23. How did SHE settle the issue of uniforms for girls?
A. By hiring famous local tailors. B. By creating adjustable uniforms.
C. By providing uniforms of various sizes. D. By increasing the school uniform budget.
24. Why does the writer mention the school performance of SHE’s students?
A. To highlight their hard work. B. To suggest the popularity of SHE.
C. To indicate their further development. D. To show the effectiveness of SHE’s practice.
【答案】21. A 22. C 23. B 24. D
