In the age of online shopping and e-readers, devoted staff and customers have kept the doors of Auntie’s Bookstore open for over 40 years. “When you’re in Portland, you go to Powell’s Books. When you’ re in Seattle, you go to Elliott Bay. When you’re in Spokane, you go to Auntie’s,” said John Waite, the owner of the bookstore. “I can’t imagine Spokane without Auntie’s,” he said. “A lot of people can’t imagine Spokane without Auntie’s, either,” Waite said.
Turning visitors into regular customers is important to the store’s success. Auntie’s markets itself as a destination. A half-dozen book clubs meet there. In most weeks, the store hosts two to four author readings or literary events. “We want people to come down, hang out and experience the feel of having a book in their hands,” Waite said.
Eager readers not only want to read books, but want to discuss them, said Kerry Halls, the store manager. Auntie’ s offers them that chance, she said. “You can’t go to Amazon and talk to someone about your favorite novel, or discuss what you think of the latest Stephen King’s book compared with Pet Cemetery,” she said.
To compete with the convenience of shopping online, Auntie’s tries to predict what books will become a trend. They store these books in advance. But Waite doesn’t hide the realities of selling books in the age of Amazon and other online retailers (零售店). “Even the big guys can’t make it,” he said, noting physical (实体的) retailers are striving nationally. As the United States’ oldest national bookstore chain, Barnes & Noble has to constantly reorganize to stop the declining sales.
At Auntie’s, regular customers are very important to its survival and development. Sales of children’s and young adults’ books are increasing in recent years, Waite said. “For a long time, older customers have kept book stores alive,” he said. “Now, it’s starting to attract younger people.” Another reason of Auntie’s longevity (长寿) is Northwest culture, which Waite said encourages new ways of thinking and the diversity of ideas. “I think it’s a great book town,” Waite said. “People are enthusiastic about reading.”
4. What can we learn about Auntie’s from Paragraph 1?
A. It is popular throughout the US.
B. It is a well-known physical bookstore in Spokane.
C. It takes full advantage of the e-business platform.
D. It has a longer history than Powell’s Books and Elliott Bay.
5 How does Auntie’s keep its customers?
A. To awaken people’s interest in reading.
B. To have more regular customers.
C. To set up a literary environment.
D. To encourage readers to learn about more authors.
6. What does the underlined word “striving” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. celebrating. B. struggling. C. progressing D. sharing
7. What is the best title of the passage?
A. The Culture of Northwest America.
B. Auntie’s Bookstore: An Ideal place for Book Lovers.
C. The Decline(衰落)of Physical Bookstores in the Online Age.
D. The Secrets of Auntie’s Bookstore’s Long-term Success.

In January 2018, the long-awaited ban (禁令) on plastic microbeads (微珠) in make-up and washing products came into force in the UK. These tiny bits of plastic were discovered to enter the ocean in their millions. The ban was a conservation victory, but scientists at Northumbria University have always been aware that such beads are only the tip of the iceberg (冰山一角) when it comes to tiny bits of marine (海洋的) pollution. The scientists’ recent findings suggest that microfibers produced during the washing of textiles (织物) are likely to be a more significant contributor to pollution than the beads ever were.
The new study from scientists at Northumbria University has revealed that almost 13,000 tons of microfibers, which are equal to two rubbish trucks every day, are being released into European marine environments every year as they fall off clothing in washing machines. These microfibers are made up of a range of materials and in fact the vast majority are natural fibers, such as cotton, wool and viscose. Though significantly more biodegradable (可生物降解的) than man-made fibers, these fibers have still been found in significant quantities in the bottom of the European oceans.
Extensive research is being carried out on how to cut down microfiber pollution. The Northumbria researchers note that several textile design rules have been established, and that more research is being undertaken to encourage their adoption by the textile industry.
The team points out that there’s a barrier to consumers’ adopting colder and quicker washing cycles (洗涤模式), since the consumers are concerned that they will not achieve the desired level of cleaning. In their conclusion they call for further advances in cold-water cleaning technology to smooth away the performance gap between regular warm cycles and colder and quicker alternatives.
“This is the first major study to examine real household wash loads and the reality of fiber release,” said John R Dean, who led the study. “Finding an ultimate solution to the pollution of marine ecosystems by microfibers released during clothes-washing will likely require significant actions in both the production processes of textiles and the design of washing machines.”
8. What do scientists at Northumbria University mainly focus on?
A. Benefits of wildlife conservation. B. Microfiber pollution from clothing.
C. Methods of making textiles clean. D. Marine pollution from tiny bits of plastic.
9. What can we infer from the new study?
A. It takes a long time for fibers to break down.
B Man-made fibers are easy to fall off clothing.
C. Natural fibers do little harm to the environment.
D. Household washing machines operate in an eco-friendly way.
10. Consumers say “No” to the colder and quicker washing cycles mainly because the cycles are believed to ______.
A. be slow in washing clothes B. be too complex to operate
C. waste too much heat and water D. fail to remove dirt effectively
11. What did John R Dean think of solving microfiber pollution?
A. It seems impractical. B. It’s unlikely to succeed.
C. It may need joint efforts. D. It needs urgent actions.
D
Is boredom a thing of the past, like black-and-white television? And, if so, is that a good thing? Julie Robinson, a former teacher who now represents the Independent Association of Prep Schools, thinks that boredom is regarded as an enemy of today’s children, and they are losing the ability to become thoughtful and reflective.
“We should not fear boredom.” said Julie Robinson. “Boredom is valuable to children. Quiet, reflective time is just as important as purposeful activity,” she added.
Her opinion is that constant (连续不断的) activity for a child, often the result of the dreams of parents, will lead to concerned and worrying adult. The traditional ideas that children should be constantly active could prevent the development of their imagination. So anything that improves a greater thoughtfulness is to be warmly welcomed.
Parents now feel a sense of failure when they hear their children complain about being bored. They seek an electronic device to play games at once. And we didn’t feel bored during long car journeys anymore by the impatient “Are we there yet?” because all kinds of electronic devices have been taken along to avoid even a minute of boredom. So what chance do children have to allow their thoughts to wander?
But it’s not just children who need lessons in reflection. Adults need that, too. On my train journey to work this morning, I couldn’t see a single person who wasn’t using an electronic device. No one was simply looking out of the window at the beautiful views. Not time for quiet thinking, even in the quiet library. There were emails to send, texts to read, and games to play. The wider world, seemingly, didn’t exist. The mobile phone has changed many things about our lives, and has developed an inability — among adults as well as children — to live in the present. What Julie Robinson regards is a cross-generational phenomenon: the fear of “inactivity”. And she is right.
12. Julie Robinson thinks boredom is useful because it makes children______.
A. find effective solutions to social problems
B. have time to think and have their imagination developed
C. improve the ability to learn knowledge
D. communicate more with their parents and friends
13. Which of the following is seen as “inactivity” according to the last paragraph?
A. Sending emails on a train.
B. Playing games with friends.
C. Planning constant activity for children.
D. Looking out of the window at the beautiful views.
14. The author mentioned the train journey to show that ______.
A. electronic devices influence people’s life greatly
B. the view of the countryside was beautiful
C. people had too much work to do
D. the trip on a quiet train was very boring
15. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. The importance of preventing children from being bored.
B. The negative impacts of electronic devices on adults.
C. The problem of people’s fear of boredom.
D. The ways to encourage children’s imagination development.

A Pleasant Surprise
It was one week before Christmas and my house was filled with festive cheer. The only thing I hoped to get from my Christmas wish list was a puppy (小狗). I had always dreamed of having a puppy, as I was the only child, and it could be quite lonely at times. However, I did not want to get my hopes up, as I knew neither of my parents liked the thought of having a puppy around the house and all that came with it.
Every time I begged for a puppy, my parents would say, “It is a lot of responsibilities, and you will have to clean up after it, give it baths, feed it regularly and walk it.”
I knew the responsibilities and was ready to take them on. Unfortunately, even with my enthusiasm (热情) and determination, my parents still disagreed to get me a puppy. There were very few chances of getting it, but I still tried asking them again that week.
“Oh honey, pick something else instead. There are so many toys that you can pick,” my parents responded as usual. As expected, I thought, giving a resigned sigh (无奈的叹息). For the rest of the evening, I decorated the Christmas tree as my parents hung some stockings. That night, I went to sleep with the hope that my dream would ever come true.
My alarm clock woke me up. “Oh my goodness, it is finally Christmas day!” I shouted excitedly and rushed down the stairs to the living room.
“Good morning, Bella!” both my parents chatted with huge smiles on their faces that were brighter than usual. My curiosity was inspired and many questions rushed into my mind. They played Christmas carols, and they sang along to the merry tunes. Just then, I caught my father smiling at my mother as if they had a secret plan and walking out of the door. When I asked my mother where my father had gone, she simply said that he had gone to pick something up. I grew confused.

5. How does Auntie’s keep its customers?
A. To awaken people’s interest in reading.
B. To have more regular customers.
C. To set up a literary environment.
D. To encourage readers to learn about more authors.
6. What does the underlined word “striving” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

B. Man-made fibers are easy to fall off clothing.
C Natural fibers do little harm to the environment.

A The importance of preventing children from being bored.
B. The negative impacts of electronic devices on adults.
C. The problem of people’s fear of boredom.
D. The ways to encourage children’s imagination development.
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. A 15. C

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 I wondered what they could be hiding from me. As the morning unfolded, my anticipation grew, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that something extraordinary was about to happen. Moments later, the front door creaked open, and in walked my father, his arms cradling a small, wriggling bundle of fur. My eyes widened in disbelief as he presented the adorable puppy to me, and my heart swelled with joy. Overwhelmed by emotion, I gathered the little creature into my arms and felt an instant connection.
I fell in love with the puppy at first sight and named her Daisy. Her playful energy and endearing nature quickly won over my parents, and soon, our home was filled with laughter and warmth. With Daisy by my side, I found a constant source of companionship and love. My once lonely days were a thing of the past, and I reveled in the newfound happiness that she brought into our lives. Christmas had indeed granted my dearest wish, and the arrival of Daisy made it a holiday season to remember.
