A charity called Hubbub suggests that we take our own plastic containers along when we buy takeaway food. To encourage us, we can get a discount on the food we buy. I agree with every aspect of this, other than that I personally wouldn’t want a discount. I would be only too happy to show off my absolutely world-class Tupperware collection on a daily basis. (Tupperware is a brand known for its line of plastic containers with airtight seals which are designed to keep food fresh for a longer time. ) I will be very pleased to pass on my discount to the customer behind me in the queue. They will want the money to buy themselves some better containers, for once they’ve seen mine, their whole bodies will throb (颤动) with envy.
I go back a long way with plastics. My mum is from Croatia, born and raised in a city where plastic products are cherished. The notion of single-use plastics doesn’t really exist there. Just as the Croatian writer Slavenka Drakulié points out in one of her books, nobody has any choice but to be environmentally sound: everything has to be recycled or more accurately, reused.
And my mum didn’t leave that habit at home when she came to Britain to meet my dad, have children and set up home in the West Midlands. To this day, my mum’s plastic collection is incomparable. Week after week, the recycling man walks up her drive, peers into the bin, shakes his head and walks away sadly — empty again. Inside, the kitchen shelves are full of plastic bottles and containers.
Her habit has been passed down to me. Every time when I try to throw away plastic pots, my hand shakes as they hover over the recycling bin. Disposal seems disloyal to my mum, the planet and everything in between.
Now I have transferred all my love to Tupperware. I counted 24 empty examples in various sizes this morning, along with 24 matching lids. Furthermore, at each washing I remove the plastic seals from the lids and clean them separately. If, mysteriously and upsettingly, I can’t find a lid for a tub, or a tub for a lid, the offending piece is put in my widows-and-orphans box. Sometimes a missing tub or lid turns up, and there is an emotional reunion with no small ceremony. These things are important to me.
41. What can we learn from paragraph 1?
A. Hubbub offers free plastic containers to people.
B. The author is proud of his Tupperware collection.
C. Hubbub encourages people to buy takeaway food.
D. The author tries to sell his Tupperware at a discount.
42. What do we know about the hometown of the author’s mum?
A. It is a place where plastic pollution is serious.
B. It is a place where plastic products are expensive.
C. It is a place which takes plastic recycling seriously.
D. It is a place which consumes lots of single-use plastics.
43. How does the author feel when he tries to throw away plastic pots?
A. Relieved. B. Delighted.
C. Angry. D. Guilty.
44. What will the author do if he can’t match a lid and a tub?
A. He will buy a new pair.
B. He will give them to others.
C. He will keep them in his storage box.
D. He will attempt to find the missing parts.
45. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.

D. the author throw away her plastic products regularly

根据第一段“I would be only too happy to show off my absolutely world - class Tupperware collection on a daily basis.(我每天都非常乐意炫耀我那绝对堪称世界级的特百惠容器收藏)” 可知,作者为自己的特百惠容器收藏感到自豪。
根据第二段“My mum is from Croatia, born and raised in a city where plastic products are cherished. The notion of single-use plastics doesn’t really exist there. Just as the Croatian writer Slavenka Drakulié points out in one of her books, nobody has any choice but to be environmentally sound: everything has to be recycled or more accurately, reused.(我妈妈来自克罗地亚,在一个珍视塑料制品的城市出生和长大。一次性塑料的概念在那里并不存在。正如克罗地亚作家斯拉文卡・德拉库利奇在她的一本书中指出的,每个人别无选择,只能注重环保:所有东西都必须回收,或者更准确地说,重复使用)” 可知,作者母亲的家乡很重视塑料回收。故选C。
【43题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Every time when I try to throw away plastic pots, my hand shakes as they hover over the recycling bin. Disposal seems disloyal to my mum, the planet and everything in between.(每次我试图扔掉塑料罐时,我的手在垃圾桶上方徘徊时都会颤抖。丢弃它们似乎对我母亲、地球以及这两者之间的一切都不忠)” 可推断,作者试图扔掉塑料罐时感到内疚。故选 D。
【44题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“If, mysteriously and upsettingly, I can’t find a lid for a tub, or a tub for a lid, the offending piece is put in my widows-and-orphans box.(如果,莫名其妙且令人沮丧的是,我找不到与容器匹配的盖子,或者与盖子匹配的容器,这些不匹配的物件就会被放进我的“孤寡物件箱”。)”
根据第三段“To this day, my mum’s plastic collection is incomparable. Week after week, the recycling man walks up her drive, peers into the bin, shakes his head and walks away sadly—empty again.(直到今天,我妈妈收集的塑料都是无与伦比的。一个星期又一个星期,回收废品的人走到她的车道上,朝垃圾桶里看了看,摇了摇头,悲伤地走开了——又一次空手而归。)” 和第四段 “Her habit has been passed down to me(她的习惯传给了我)” 可推知,回收利用塑料是作者家族的传统。故选A。
C
“More and more data are made available to drivers through in-vehicle systems. However, it’s not safe or practical to inform drivers of the information unless you know the state of the driver,” said Dr Bashar Ahmad from Cambridge’s Department of Engineering.
Ahmad, together with other researchers, developed an algorithm (算法) to address this problem. The algorithm analyzes the driver’s behaviour, road conditions etc. to measure the driver’s workload so that the driver and the in-vehicle systems such as navigation (导航) and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) could interact at the right time. “Driving in an unfamiliar area may mean a high workload, so we should avoid flustering the driver then, while driving in our neighborhood may involve a lower workload, making it the right time for a message to appear on a screen,” said Ahmad.
To measure drivers’ workload, the researchers first collected, in an automated way, drivers’ subjective workload information during driving. For the experiment, a phone showing a route on a navigation app was fixed to the car, next to a small LED ring light that would flash at regular periods. Participants all followed the same route through a mix of rural, urban and main roads. They were asked to push a finger-worn button whenever the LED light turned red and they perceived they were in a low-workload situation.
Video analysis of the experiment, paired with the data from the buttons, allowed the researchers to identify high-workload situations. The researchers used the on-road data to develop a machine learning framework to assess drivers based on their average workload, and a Bayesian filtering approach (贝叶斯滤波法) to estimate the drivers’ real-time workload.
“Most machine learning applications like this are trained on data from a particular driver, but this application enables us to adjust the models accordingly using a simple Bayesian filtering technique,” said Ahmad. “It can easily adjust to different road types and conditions, or different drivers using the same car.”
“This research is vital for understanding the impact of our design from a user’s perspective, so that we can continually improve safety and driving experiences,” said Senior Technical Specialist Dr Lee Skrypchuk.
46. What is the main function of Ahmad’s algorithm?
A. Assessing people’s driving skills.
B. Stimulating drivers’ best driving state.
C. Collecting traffic information from surrounding areas.
D. Finding the appropriate time for driver-vehicle interactions.
47. What does the underlined word “flustering” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Blaming. B. Monitoring.
C. Disturbing. D. Restricting.
48. What did pressing a finger-worn button indicate in the experiment?
A. The driver requested a speed increase.
B. The driver was in a relaxed driving state.
C. The driver had switched on the headlights.
D. The driver encountered complex road conditions.
49. What distinguishes this machine learning application from many others?
A. It is highly adaptable. B. It is of amazing accuracy.
C. It needs simple data processing. D. It is limited to specific drivers.
50. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Machine Learning for Improving Road Safety
B. ADAS:A Model for Future Autonomous Driving
C. The Wide Application of New In-Vehicle Systems
D. Autonomous Vehicles: Redefining the Driving Experience
46. D 47. C 48. B 49. A 50. A
根据第二段中“The algorithm analyzes the driver’s behaviour, road conditions etc. to measure the driver’s workload so that the driver and the in-vehicle systems such as navigation (导航) and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) could interact at the right time. (该算法分析驾驶员的行为、路况等,以衡量驾驶员的工作负荷,从而使驾驶员和车载系统(如导航系统和高级驾驶员辅助系统)能够在正确的时间进行交互)”可知,Ahmad的算法的主要功能是找到驾驶员与车辆交互的合适时间。故选D。
【47题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词所在句““Driving in an unfamiliar area may mean a high workload, so we should avoid flustering the driver then, while driving in our neighborhood may involve a lower workload, making it the right time for a message to appear on a screen,” said Ahmad.(“在不熟悉的地区驾驶可能意味着工作负荷很大,所以我们应该避免flustering驾驶员,而在我们附近驾驶可能意味着工作负荷较低,这是屏幕上出现信息的合适时机”Ahmad说)”可知,前后句为转折关系,后文提到附近驾驶意味着工作负荷较低,是屏幕上出现信息的合适时机,那么前文应是指在不熟悉的地区驾驶可能意味着工作负荷很大,所以要避免打扰驾驶员,因此划线词flustering的意思是“打扰”。
根据第三段中“They were asked to push a finger-worn button whenever the LED light turned red and they perceived they were in a low-workload situation. (当LED灯变红,并且他们认为自己处于低负荷状态时,他们被要求按下手指佩戴的按钮)”可知,在实验中,按下手指佩戴的按钮表明驾驶员处于放松的驾驶状态。故选B。
【49题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中““Most machine learning applications like this are trained on data from a particular driver, but this application enables us to adjust the models accordingly using a simple Bayesian filtering technique,” said Ahmad.(“大多数像这样的机器学习应用程序都是在特定驾驶员的数据上进行训练的,但这个应用程序使我们能够使用简单的贝叶斯过滤技术相应地调整模型”Ahmad说)”和“It can easily adjust to different road types and conditions, or different drivers using the same car. (它可以很容易地适应不同的道路类型和条件,或者不同的驾驶员使用同一辆车)”可知,这个机器学习应用程序与其他许多应用程序的不同之处在于它具有很高的适应性。故选A。
根据第一段中““More and more data are made available to drivers through in-vehicle systems. However, it’s not safe or practical to inform drivers of the information unless you know the state of the driver,” said Dr Bashar Ahmad from Cambridge’s Department of Engineering. (剑桥大学工程系的巴沙尔·艾哈迈德博士表示:“越来越多的数据正通过车载系统提供给驾驶员。然而,除非你了解驾驶员的状态,否则向他们提供这些信息既不安全也不实际。”)”和第二段中“Ahmad, together with other researchers, developed an algorithm (算法) to address this problem. (Ahmad和其他研究人员一起开发了一种算法来解决这个问题)”以及下文对这种算法的介绍可知,文章主要介绍了研究人员开发了一种算法来确定驾驶员与车载系统交互的最佳时间,以提高驾驶安全性和体验,因此本文的最佳标题是A选项“Machine Learning for Improving Road Safety (用于提高道路安全的机器学习)”。故选A。
D
Socrates declared that the unexamined life wasn’t worth living for a human being, implying that we should attempt to know ourselves, to think through our actions, choices, prejudices and attitudes. But when it comes to thinking about our own happiness and what makes our lives go well, it really does seem that this reflective attitude can ruin our chances of finding what we seek.
Perhaps it’s not surprising that we are better designed for engaging in other activities than reflecting on how best to achieve our own happiness and well-being. Doing things that enhance our growth in physical, social and intellectual areas tends to bring the reward of feeling good, and so stimulates us further to pursue those activities. Sitting around reflecting on what will make us happy is a lot less efficient than chasing the things that make us happy, and if we think too much, there is an opportunity cost - time that we could have spent in a worthwhile activity has gone while we were thinking deeply about the best way to develop.
Certainly, the tricky thing about self-reflection is that it can both help and hold us back. While thinking about ourselves can lead to growth, overanalyzing might stop us from taking action, leaving us stuck in thought instead of moving forward. This is like an athlete’s challenge: improving takes practice, not constant self-criticism. Similarly, in life, balance matters—being aware without obsessing, having plans without overthinking. Happiness often comes not from endless analysis, but from mindful action and going with the flow. After all, life’s best moments usually happen unexpectedly, in the gaps between our plans.
The philosopher David has written about the role of reflective thinking in sports. One of his observations is that while sports people need to think about the basic actions they are performing, it can be counterproductive to start thinking about the elements making up those actions. A footballer needs to think about kicking the ball low and hard to the left of the goalkeeper, but not to overthink the mechanics of the precise small movements of legs and feet that produce that outcome. If he or she does start this sort of thought process, it very often leads to a poorer shot. What’s needed is a kind of automatic response to the situation.
Perhaps something similar is going on in our life. Those people who start detailed programs of self-development in various dimensions, focusing on diet, habits, exercise, mental activity, work output, and so on, are like the footballer thinking through the small muscle movements. Perhaps their well-meaning self-reflection on their own development and how they want to achieve it, is the very thing that will make a high level of development forever unobtainable for them.
51. What may cause an opportunity cost?
A. Spending time on worthy activities B. Joining in social meetings actively.
C. Getting stuck in much self-reflection. D. Doing physical exercises efficiently.
52. In paragraph 3, “athlete’s challenge” and “balance” are mentioned to show that ________.
A. too much practice can be bad for athletes’ health and wellbeing.
B. overthinking stops action, just as focusing on errors hurts performance
C. happy people don’t think about their problems and worries
D. successful people make all decisions quickly and effectively
53. What does the underlined word “counterproductive” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Ineffective. B. Meaningless. C. Constructive. D. Profitable.
54. What does the author suggest readers do to achieve their goals?
A. Make a comprehensive plan. B. Adopt a direct approach.
C. Think carefully before action. D. Attach importance to details.
55. What is a suitable title for this text?
A. The Risk of Overthinking B. The Key to Well-being
C. The Way to Think Reflectively D. The Method to Develop Yourself
51. C 52. B 53. A 54. B 55. A
根据文章第二段“Sitting around reflecting on what will make us happy is a lot less efficient than chasing the things that make us happy, and if we think too much, there is an opportunity cost - time that we could have spent in a worthwhile activity has gone while we were thinking deeply about the best way to develop.(闲坐着思考什么能让我们幸福,远不如去追寻那些能让我们幸福的事情来得高效。
根据文章第三段“Certainly, the tricky thing about self-reflection is that it can both help and hold us back. Happiness often comes not from endless analysis, but from mindful action and going with the flow.(当然,自我反思的棘手之处在于它既能帮助我们,也能阻碍我们。
根据划线单词下文“One of his observations is that while sports people need to think about the basic actions they are performing, it can be counterproductive to start thinking about the elements making up those actions. A footballer needs to think about kicking the ball low and hard to the left of the goalkeeper, but not to overthink the mechanics of the precise small movements of legs and feet that produce that outcome. If he or she does start this sort of thought process, it very often leads to a poorer shot.(他的一个观察结果是,虽然运动员需要思考他们正在进行的基本动作,但如果开始思考构成这些动作的要素,可能会……。 故选A。
根据文章第三段“Happiness often comes not from endless analysis, but from mindful action and going with the flow.(幸福往往并非来自无休止的分析,而是来自用心的行动和顺其自然。)”以及最后一段“Perhaps something similar is going on in our life. Those people who start detailed programs of self-development in various dimensions, focusing on diet, habits, exercise, mental activity, work output, and so on, are like the footballer thinking through the small muscle movements. Perhaps their well-meaning self-reflection on their own development and how they want to achieve it, is the very thing that will make a high level of development forever unobtainable for them.(或许在我们的生活中也存在类似的情况。
故选A。
Caring 17-year-old Lauren Schroeder was inspired to help bring healthy food to needy families in her community. Volunteering at a food shelter when she was 14, and tasked with helping fill boxes for households in need with canned and packaged food, this Iowa teen felt that something was missing from the donated groceries: fresh vegetables. So she shared with her parents her desire to start a garden on part of their family farm in Dixon, Iowa, to supply local families in need with fresh produce.
Coming from a farming family, Lauren had some familiarity with agriculture, and had helped raise rabbits and lambs, but had never tried vegetable cultivation at scale, though the Schroeders plant soybeans and corn each year on their 150-acre farm.
The work involved in realizing Lauren’s plan was no walk in the park. Initially, while proud of her daughter’s vision, her mother, Katie Shroeder, admitted having some misgiving about the work involved: “I was wondering, ‘Oh my gosh, how much work is this going to be? ‘ I wasn’t sure whether this would work. ”
This was one young change-maker, however! Lauren researched plants online, checking which species needed more shade, how much water was required, and when to harvest each crop. During Iowa’s hot summers, she had to water her crops by hand for around 2-3 hours daily. She also checked daily for weeds, and bent down to pick her green bean crop. Thanks to her diligence, Lauren planted half an acre of land, with 15 varieties of vegetables in 2022, harvesting and weighing her first crops, with a first batch of 18kilograms.
In 2023, Lauren doubled the size of her garden to an acre. Discussing her plans, The Washington Post reveals that Lauren would like to grow another 5, 897 kilograms of produce, thus bringing her vegetables to 9, 072 kilograms when it’s time for her to go to college in 2025.
In an interview with a local media channel, Lauren says, “I wanted to have something that’d impact people. I want to impact community members. Many people help you out, but it makes more difference when you help others out. That’s what makes me most happy.”

Are you struggling to be yourself at work? Tired of being behind schedule? Here are some important work tips that you can follow to improve your productivity.
Focusing on One Task
Some people have the habit of multitasking, which is great, but it might distract you from the bigger picture. Multitasking might help you with different tasks. You might also feel like the jack of all trades (万事通) but your productivity won’t increase in the long run.
Focus on one task at a time and this will allow you to complete that task with high standards. When the task is done, you can move on to the next one.
Setting Small but Effective Goals
You will be given large and challenging tasks at work and what matters is how you deal with them. Stress might be the normal response here but you can also play it smart. You can break any large task into small but manageable tasks, which will help you stay productive and will also make the best of time.
Think of it like building blocks and you will have to focus on one small task at a time but the end result will be fascinating.
Setting Self-Imposed (自己强加的) Deadlines
Setting self-imposed deadlines can actually help you be more productive at work Stress is a bad thing, but self-imposed stress can actually help us focus and be better. You can do really well with open-ended tasks or projects once you give yourself a deadline. Stick to that deadline and you will be surprised by the miracles that you can perform at work.
Trying Following the “Two-Minute” Rule
Steve Olenski is one of the finest entrepreneurs to date and he has given wonderful advice in the shape of the “Two-Minute” Rule. The “Two-Minute” Rule is basically about making the best out of small windows at work. Olenski tells us that if there is a task at work, and you can do it in 2 minutes, then you do it immediately. When you complete that small task, you don’t actually have to waste more time getting back to it, which also increases your productivity.

B The author is proud of his Tupperware collection.
A. recycling plastics is a tradition in author’s family
B. the author is keen on collecting plastic products
C. the recycling man appreciates the author mom’s life style
D. the author throw away her plastic products regularly

B. The driver was in a relaxed driving state.
C. The driver had switched on the headlights.

D. Profitable.
