In order to take care of him, his younger brother became his shadow, never leaving him alone for years. Except for writing with his toes, he was completely unable to do anything in his life.
As the two brothers grew up together, they met problems and they would often argue. Then one day, his younger brother wanted to have his own life, as many normal people do. So he was sad and didn’t know what to do.
A similar misfortune happened to a girl, too. One night her mother, who suffered from an illness, disappeared. Her father went out to look for her mother, leaving her alone at home. She tried to prepare meals for her parents, but unluckily overturned the kerosene (煤油) light on the stove, causing a fire which took her hands away.
Although her elder sister was studying in another city and would like to take care of her, she was determined (决心) to be completely independent. At school, she always studied hard. Most of all she learned to be self-reliant (依靠自己).
One day, the boy and the girl were both invited to appear on a television interview program. The boy told the TV host about his sad future, while the girl was full of enthusiasm(热情)for her life. They both were asked to write something on a piece of paper with their toes. The boy wrote: My younger brother’s arms are my arms; while the girl wrote: Broken wings, flying heart.

What will the world of tomorrow be like? Many people today believe that technology is going to help solve some problems we have today. New technology may solve old problems, and it may also create new ones. No technology is perfect. Each has advantages and disadvantages. Here are three examples.
When we dream about the future, many of us think that we will be able to fly to the sky in our own flying cars. We could fly at 480 km per hour, avoiding traffic lights and busy roads. However, if too many flying cars are in the air, there will be trouble with traffic control.
3D printing is another new technology for the future.3D printers are already used to make life-size models of car parts (部件), and man-made body parts, like ears. As we move into the future, 3D printing will change the way we make things and the way we treat sick people. The disadvantage is that such a machine is very expensive.
Finally, people are trying to make a robot suit. This is an electronic suit. It allows people to lift heavy things and walk a long way. It might help people walk again after an illness or an accident. However, one disadvantage at the moment is the cost.
It is easy to imagine a future. We will be able to fly to work, print out a new pair of shoes or lift a car above our heads. Everyone has habits—some good, some bad. While certain habits help us stay healthy, others may cause problems. Let’s take a closer look at a few of them and find out how to break them.
Nail Biting
Many people bite their nails when they feel uneasy, worried, or just because it’s a habit. It may seem not harmful, except for making your nails look ugly. However, when you keep biting your nails, you put dirt and germs (细菌) into your mouth, which can make you sick. For centuries, people have thought of many solutions. In the past, they put something bitter or sour on their fingertips. Nowadays, some people buy special nail polishes (指甲油) with unpleasant smells. These smells can remind them to stop when biting. Besides, keeping nails short is also a useful method because it makes them harder to bite.
Eating quickly
Some people finish their food too fast, which is both impolite and unhealthy. According to experts, this habit may lead to illnesses, such as stomach pain and heart problems. To avoid that, you can take your time during the meal. When you are full, it takes around 20 minutes for the stomach to send signals to the brain that you’d better not continue eating. Therefore, give your body enough time to catch up and spend at least 20 minutes on each meal.
Using a smartphone in bed
When the sun goes down, our bodies know it’s time to sleep and produce a chemical to help us sleep. However, the light from screens makes the body release this chemical more slowly, so the brain keeps active even during nighttime. To have a good night’s sleep, you can listen to light music or take a warm bath before bed. These activities don’t require much deep thinking or cause excitement, which brings you a sense of calm. Finally, if you can’t control checking your phone, just leave it in another room.
16. Why is nail biting harmful?
A. It makes nails grow slowly. B. It puts dirt and germs into the mouth.
C. It causes tooth problems. D. It makes people feel more worried.
17. How long should people spend on each meal to avoid problems caused by eating quickly?
A. At least 10 minutes. B. At most 15 minutes.
C. At least 20 minutes. D. At most 25 minutes.
18. What does the underlined word “release” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. 吸收 B. 抑制 C. 释放 D. 消耗
19. According to the passage, which of the following is true?
A. Special nail polishes are the best way to stop nail biting.
B. People with eating-quickly habits never have heart problems.
C. Listening to exciting music before bed helps people sleep well.
D. Leaving the smartphone in another room can help people sleep better.

In recent years, it has become popular for women to wear a traditional qipao dress. Especially during the National College Entrance Examination, better known as the “gaokao”, many mothers wear qipaos to wish their children good luck in the exam. The reason is that “qipao” represents the Chinese phrase “qi kai de sheng” meaning victory. The qipao has a high collar, with pankous, traditional Chinese knotted buttons on the front.
Some people believe the qipao originated from gowns (长袍) worn by women in the Qing Dynasty. After years of development the qipao is now mainly divided into Beijing styles, Shanghai styles and Hong Kong styles. There are many differences in color and design.
The Beijing-style qipao is more traditional than Shanghai-style and Hong Kong-style qipaos. The colors of Beijing-style qipaos are much brighter. High-quality Beijing-style qipaos are usually made by hand, so the price is much higher.
Compared with Beijing-style qipaos, Shanghai-style ones are more modern. More Western elements (元素) are used in the designs and colors. Shanghai-style qipaos became the most popular qipao style because of the fashionable design and slim shape. Now, Shanghai-style qipaos are still the first choice for most women, especially among younger ones.
Hong Kong-style qipaos have been influenced greatly by European fashions. They have shorter sleeves than the other two. The decorations are simpler, too.
The qipao is a very classic product to represent (代表) the beauty of traditional Chinese clothing. It shows not only the history of the Han people, but also the footprints of other cultures on the land.

Spreading Traditional Chinese Culture
Among various traditional cultures, I love wearing Hanfu most. Last year, during our school’s Culture Festival, I decided to experience it. I borrowed a beautiful Hanfu dress and wore it to take photos in the park. Many people stopped to admire it, and some even asked me about its history.
Through this experience, I learned that Hanfu is not just clothing but a symbol of our rich heritage. It made me feel proud to be Chinese.
Although there are some problems to solve, we can certainly dream of a world. In this world, technology makes people’s life easier and safer, and it can solve some of the most difficult problems we have today.

Everyone has habits—some good, some bad. While certain habits help us stay healthy, others may cause problems. Let’s take a closer look at a few of them and find out how to break them.
Nail Biting
Many people bite their nails when they feel uneasy worried, or just because it’s a habit.
