Passage 1
(2023-2024学年高一下·河北保定·期末)High school ended and all I remembered was feeling stuck. Most of my peers (同龄人) had picked out their majors and some even planned their careers. But I was still wondering about that.
I’ve always enjoyed writing but didn’t know how to make a career out of it. After researching my options, such as journalism, I thought Professional Communications could improve my writing skills and lead me to a career in business. With that, I sent in my application, was accepted and started preparing for my first term of university.
When course intentions rolled around, I began looking at the list of minors. Marketing caught my attention. It would complement (补充) my communications degree while providing me with the necessary business courses that were outside of the program. Without hesitation, I scheduled marketing into my studies, with the goal of using that newfound knowledge to accompany the technical skills that my major would provide me with.
My school year began in a pretty typical way: the orientation week (迎新周), joining clubs and meeting new people. As time went on, I found myself enjoying the marketing courses more than the communications courses, and it was then that I first began to consider making a change. Finally, I spoke with a friend who had switched to a different major, and his words of encouragement were the final push I needed to go through with the decision. A few days later, I sent in my application, and soon I received my acceptance letter.
I’ve now been gifted with a wonderful start to the year, and I couldn’t be happier about making the change. I feel less pressured to “find myself” and can put 110% effort into my studies. A note to high school students: University brings with it a load of new beginnings and self-reflection. It’s perfectly fine to come into university thinking you want one thing and finding out along the way that it might not be the right path for you.

Passage 2
(2023-2024学年高一下·河南新乡·期末)Some of the classrooms at Taft Elementary in Santa Clara, California, have one disadvantage in common: They don’t have windows. That’s true for Logan Earnest’s fifth grade classroom, and he felt it was affecting his students.
“Most of the day, they’re inside,” Earnest told CBS News. “And they don’t really get to see any trees, grass, or the blue sky.” He said the gray walls could be depressing to the kids and may affect their attention and even their attendance.
This was confirmed by former school psychologist Ernesto Rodriguez, who said the lack of windows does affect kids, because research shows being in and around nature eases anxiety and benefits students. Though no longer a practicing psychologist, perhaps he knows now more than ever the impact nature has on mental health. Rodriguez became a park ranger (公园管理员) on Southern California’s Catalina Island and began focusing on his passion—landscape photography.
It was during his training to become a park ranger that he learned a fact that kids who have views out windows to trees do better academically, emotionally and creatively. So an idea to bring nature into rooms occurred to him: Why not bring landscapes in classrooms—via the ceiling (天花板), because teachers don’t typically use them.
Rodriguez took 360 degree shots of tree canopies (树冠) using his photography skills, then he printed them and fit them onto the classroom ceiling of Earnest’s fifth grade. “Beautiful,”one student said as she entered the room. Another student said the trees brought him peace, “When you look up, it feels like you’re sitting under a tree.”
Earnest said he thought there would be many positive effects on his students. “I think my attendance is going to go up. The kids are going to want to come here more frequently. Overall, I think the kids are going to be happier,” he said.
5.What is the common challenge shared by some classrooms at Taft Elementary?
A.Lack of fresh air. B.Absence of windows.
C.Insufficient lighting. D.Limited access to technology.

D.To create an exciting environment for the students.
7.How did the students react to Rodriguez’s pictures on the classroom ceiling?
A.They did not notice the change.
B.They failed to concentrate on lessons.
C.They preferred the original gray ceiling.
D.They were in favour of the new additions.
8.What’s Logan Earnest’s attitude towards the change in the classroom?
A.Cautious and objective. B.Appreciative and supportive.
C.Concerned but doubtful. D.Curious but unsure
Passage 3
(2023-2024学年高一下·山东济宁·期末)There comes a time for every family when the tables turn and the parent has to answer to the child. Mine came recently when my wife and I stayed with our son in Los Angeles — our first visit in several years and the longest since he moved west in 2014. A whole week under his roof!
“Dad, don’t leave the water running when you brush your teeth,” Nathaniel warned on our first night. “Don’t pull extra paper towels to wipe the kitchen appliances!” I was instructed to use the dishcloth, which didn’t seem clean. More rules followed. Not to leave shoes sitting out. Don’t wear a neck warmer when walking the dog in the morning — it will warm up when we get to the park. Don’t drink too much juice.
At first I wondered how I’d raised such a tyrant. Then I remembered how often I threw the golden rule of parenting at Nathaniel when he was young. “Don’t drink cold water! Clean your bedroom!” I shouted. “Someday, you’ll have a home of your own and can live however you want!” Now it was payback time. So I smilingly followed Nathaniel’s family rules.
In the next few days, he cleaned dishes after dinner, assuming he would do a better job than my wife and me. He also set our daily outings, including an inspired trip to the Autry Museum. And he willingly drove everywhere, sparing me the trouble of Los Angeles traffic...
We were walking along El Matador Beach our last afternoon and hit an extended range of rocks. I suggested stopping there, because it’s too hard for me to mount the rocks. Nathaniel wouldn’t hear of it and encouraged me across one large stone to the next, patiently telling me where to place my feet and hands as ocean waves came close. I was terrified, but after a couple hundred yards we made it to a fresh san dy stretch. “You did it! I’m really proud,” he said, smiling, as if I’d just learned to ride a bike. It was then that I knew for sure that the son has taken on the role of a father.
9.What happened to the author when he first came to his son’s home?
A.He had to answer calls. B.He had trouble fitting into local society.

D.Parent-child role turned, payback time comes.
Passage 4
Here comes a time for every family when the tables turn and the parent has to answer to the child. Mine came recently when my wife and I visited our son in Los Angeles.
“Dad, don’t leave the water running when you brush your teeth,” Nathaniel admonished on our first night. All right, I figured, this is California, where drought (干旱) is a concern. But then more followed. Not to leave my awkward walking shoes sitting out, and did I even need such ugly footwear? Don’t wear a neck warmer when walking the dogs in the morning — it will warm up when we get to the park. And do you have to take a shower before we drive to Topanga?
At the beginning, I wondered how I raised such a bossy child. But I recalled my own words when he was young: “Someday, you’ll have your own home and can live however you want. Until then, do as we say.” Now, it was payback time.
I remembered being angry at my own father’s commands growing up, how he always tidied my desk or came into my room at dusk to close the windows. And so I smilingly followed Nathaniel’s nagging (唠叨).
On our last afternoon, we were walking along ElMatador Beach and hit an extended patch of rocks — clearly the end of the line, I thought. Nathaniel wouldn’t hear of it and encouraged me to walk across one largest one to the next, patiently telling me where to place my arthritic (关节炎的) feet and hands as ocean waves came close. I was terrified, but after a couple hundred yards we eventually reached a fresh sandy beach.
“You did it! I’m really proud,” he said, smiling, as if I’d just learned to ride a bike. It was then that I knew for sure that the son also rises to fatherhood.

Passage 5
(2023-2024学年高一下·河南三门峡·期末)“You must write about how they survived. Everybody wants to hear that.” I told my fifth-grade daughter Sally, who was constructing her social studies report. Sally's decision was to investigate The Donner Party, the show where settlers got stuck. I was excited. My wife is expert in math, writing, science... everything but history. That is Daddy's domain.
“Dad.” Sally said. “You can help just a bit but don't boss me around.” But I had to share knowledge with her. I was sure that at this moment, most of parents in my daughter's class were perfecting their child's project into an A+. If other parents were helping, didn't I have to help to keep my daughter in the race for the college?
Ironically(具有讽刺意味的是), I had my own project an essay on how much parents should help with their kids' reports. I called psychology researcher Carol Dweck, told her “my help” and expected her to tell me it's important for parents to help. “Parents can be available as a resource.” Dweck said. to discuss the nature of the assignment, and be a sounding board for ideas. But that's it. Helping too much sends a message that the children are not capable. or makes them think less.” So I shouldn't urge Sally to include those details? It was hard to resist.
Put off by my daughter for the moment, I returned to my project. This time. Joe Kelly, author of six parenting books, reminded me that it's more important to support your children than to “help” them After more research, I finally considered one piece of advice from a psychologist Children model their behavior after their parents'. This means it's valuable to show them how to structure and complete a project. I looked at Sally who was still concentrating on her project. “I was writing an article.” I said. “To do the project, I researched and interviewed experts first. Then I began to write it, and just now. I thought of conclusion, and guess what. Saly? I just finished.”

Passage 6
There’s comfort in the bottom of a swimming pool.
In the open air, the noises all demanded your attention: the lifeguard’s whistle, the slapping of feet across the ground, the voices asking for different things. It reminded me of the school cafeteria, packed with kids: too loud to read a book in. But beneath the surface, things were quiet. The sounds that used to annoy me lost all their power. Instead, they mixed with the splashing of the water and the gentle blub-blub of air bubbles escaping my nose. All the noises worked together to create a symphony. Harmony.
Perhaps the best thing about the bottom of a swimming pool, though, was that at the bottom of a swimming pool, I was alone. I didn’t have to worry about anyone splashing or kicking or making fun of me. They were all far, far away up on the surface. It was only me. Just me.
I used to wish I could live underwater. Mermaids (美人鱼) didn’t have to go to school. Mermaids didn’t call other mermaids nerds (怪胎).
But once, when I came up for air, I spotted a girl my age at the other side of the pool. We locked eyes before I went back under, just for a second. I didn’t think anything of it — girls like her usually didn’t want to be seen around me — until I felt a soft tug on my ankle, and I spied her next to me. She actually wanted to talk to me. She wanted to be friends.
So we talked. And I found out that she liked Pokémon and Warrior Cats just like I did. And we competed to see who could make the biggest splash, and when it got dark and the lights came on, we explored the depths of the pool together.
I didn’t spend so much time at the bottom of a swimming pool after that. How could I when there was so much waiting for me on the surface?

Passage 1
(2023-2024学年高一下•河北沧州•期末)When Montgomery was at college, he decided to study the Chinese language. “My friends laughed at my decision. Just like most Americans, they didn’t know much about China then. Who knew what China would become in the 21st century?”he says.
To find a China-related job after graduating from university, he became a businessman related to US-China trade. Traveling and meeting people in different parts of China, he found that the more he learned about China, the more he was attracted by its history and culture.
When he found that there was no English podcast (播客) about Chinese history in 2010,he decided to launch one himself. He worked from home using very simple recording and editing facilities. Each of the half-hour episodes (集) took him 18 to 20 hours to research, write, record and edit.
“China has a great history. I try to get more Americans to appreciate it,” says Montgomery. “There are many topics to talk about. I use my common sense to feel what will be interesting to most people.”
His China History Podcast is now downloaded 1.5 million times a year, with audience from the United States, China and other countries.

Passage 2
(2023-2024学年高一下•江苏常州•期末)Li Dan works as a teacher at East China Jiaotong University in Jiangxi Province. During her spare time, she recreates ancient Chinese delicacies that have been all but lost to history.
Li began working on the project in August 2020, and so far the many traditional dishes she has created include more than 60 from Dream of the Red Mansions, one of China’s four greatest classic novels. To recreate the dishes, she has had to refer to books on traditional recipes, agriculture and even traditional Chinese medicine to learn and adopt traditional techniques.
“I’ve liked the novel since I was a kid because I was always impressed by the food described in it. Its illustration of the dishes vividly shows the elegance of life in that era, so I have been trying to revive them,” said Li. “I make these delicacies in the hope that more people will read the novel.”
Li says that one of the biggest challenges is recreating dishes that require highly seasonal ingredients. If all of her trial dishes fail during the short season, she needs to wait one year to try again. The most difficult dishes she has ever attempted are chicken skin soup with pickled bamboo shoots, and dried eggplant. It took her more than two weeks to finish each of the dishes.
“Clothing and buildings can all be well looked after, whereas food can seldom be conserved in museums. For food, modern people have only ancient accounts to refer to,” she said.
Food is one of many highlights in traditional Chinese culture. As Chinese culture is increasingly accepted by the younger generations, many online influencers like Li also have posted videos of themselves recreating ancient Chinese food. Professional chefs have also been bringing cuisines recorded in ancient books back to life, carrying forward traditional techniques. Through their efforts, the culture and folk customs behind the plate are also being brought back.

Passage 3
Well, I made it,” says Chris Green with a smile.
Recently there have been news reports and television shows reporting on the quality of school lunches. According to federal (联邦的) guidelines, French fries count as a serving of vegetables. Many parents and others are upset that a salty, deep-fried food is replacing healthier options like carrot sticks. As a result, the potato — what French fries are made of — has been getting a bad rap.
“The problem is not the potato,” insists Chris. “Potatoes are very healthy. But any food, even carrots or lettuce (生菜), will be less healthy if it’s cooked in grease (油脂).”
Two months ago, Chris decided to eat nothing but potatoes for 60 days. As a high school science teacher and son of a potato farmer, he wanted to do something to draw attention to potatoes as a healthy food and a good choice as part of anyone’s regular meals.
“It’s been an interesting experience,” Chris said. “For a while, I wasn’t sure I would make it. I was pretty tired of eating potatoes after a few weeks.”
But for Chris there were some benefits that he hadn’t expected. He’s lost 15 pounds and he feels better than he has in years. “I have so much more energy,” he says. “I’ve been running and playing on a local basketball team, and I feel like I’m playing as well as I did when I was in high school.”
And Chris has gotten a lot of attention, much more than he expected. “It’s been fantastic. Thousands of people have read my blog. I’ve been sharing recipes and talking about the experience. Every day I get to tell people what a great idea it is to eat potatoes.”

Passage 4
(2023-2024学年高一下•江苏泰州•期末)Some of the 17 million Americans suffering from major depressive disorder may soon receive a surprising new suggestion from their doctors: Have fun on a virtual reality (VR) device.
“Depression impacts so many people right now, and we thought VR could have a large impact,” said Bullock, founder of Stanford’s Neurobehavioral Clinic and Virtual Reality program. “There can be significant barriers to behavioral activation (行为激活) in some patients — they might be stuck in a hospital bed, or have no means to involve themselves in enjoyable activities like getting outside, exercising and volunteering. We started wondering whether simulated (模拟的) pleasant activities could be a good first step for them.”
The study by Bullock’s team, published in JMIR Mental Health, followed 26 people with major depressive disorder. Half were told to plan and take part in real life activities like going on outings in their community or socializing with friends. The other half used a virtual reality headset to participate in activities ranging from table tennis to touring foreign cities or attending shows. After four weeks, people in both groups saw a decrease in their symptoms of depression and their depression rating by similar amounts.
“People who might otherwise have barriers to getting treatment might be open to using this technology in their own homes,” said Margot Paul, a professor of mental and behavioral sciences.
Bullock believes the cost and ease of many VR platforms — especially those that have mobile phones put into cheap cardboard headsets — make it an easy treatment to promote.
The team says larger and longer-term studies are needed to find the best ways to practice virtual behavioral activation, as well as which patient populations might be best targeted with the VR treatment. They also think more efforts are needed to inform doctors about how to practice VR behavioral activation appropriately.
13.What is the benefit of using virtual reality to treat depression?
A.It provides easier access to mood-lifting activities.
B.It increases public awareness regarding depression.
C.It motivates those with serious depression to get out.
D.It is more effective than taking part in real life activities.
14.What’s Margot Paul’s attitude towards the VR treatment?
A.Unclear. B.Favorable. C.Doubtful. D.Negative.
15.What might the follow-up study focus on?
A.Cutting down on the cost of VR treatment. B.Exploring how VR lifts the patient’ spirits.
C.Putting the VR treatment into practical use. D.Encouraging doctors to adopt VR treatment.
16.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.VR — a simple tool to treat depression B.VR — a shared world without frontiers
C.VR — a replacement for traditional drugs D.VR — a technology taking the world by storm
Passage 5
(2023-2024学年高一下•浙江宁波•期末)When 89-year-old Li Jinrong heard someone calling her “mom” at an event in Wuhan, Hubei Province, she immediately rose from her seat. A foreign woman ran toward her before hugging her tightly and saying, “Mom, mom.”
The woman, Bouammouch Kheira, is from Algeria. She underwent a total nasal reconstruction operation (全鼻再造手术) — the first of its kind in Africa — that was done by Li and other members of a Chinese medical team 40 years ago. In 1984, Li joined the 11th Chinese medical aid mission to Algeria. She helped a hospital in the North African country carry out oral (口腔的) and facial operations. In 1985, 12-year-old Kheira visited the hospital to seek treatment for a stomach infection. Doctor Li happened to notice Kheira’s badly disfigured (容貌受损的) nose, the tip of which was bitten off by a donkey when she was just 2 years old.
“Had she not been disfigured, she would have grown up to be a great beauty,” Li said. Then she devised a detailed treatment plan and decided to transplant the skin from one of Kheira’s upper arms to reconstruct her nose, because it matched her facial skin tone and would not leave noticeable scars.
Though scared at first, Li’s sincere attitude and caring words reminded her of her mother and gave her hope. The reconstruction of Kheira’s nose required four operations over a period of two months. After its perfect completion, Kheira ran from ward (病房) to ward, telling everyone that she now had a nose, a gift from her “Chinese mother”.
Kheira travelled 10,000 kilometers from Algeria to Wuhan. “This is my first visit to China, but I don’t feel the journey was hard at all, because I am so excited to meet Professor Li, my Chinese mother,” Kheira added, “Without my Chinese mother, my life would be darker than death,”

Passage 6
(2023-2024学年高一下•安徽马鞍山•期末)Phan Thi Kim Chi’s connection with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) began at an early age. Growing up in a small village in Vietnam, it was inconvenient for Phan to travel to hospitals in neighboring cities. Whenever she caught a cold or experienced a headache as a child, her family would seek the help of a local TCM practitioner. This led her to major in TCM at a traditional medical school in China. According to Phan, even though TCM has long been commonly practiced and accepted in Vietnam, finding a good school to learn TCM in Vietnam is not easy.
As a foreign student, Phan finds the TCM basic theory course to be the most challenging one in the courses. Being widespread and far-reaching, TCM is deeply connected with Chinese philosophy. It requires years of learning and practice to truly understand the concepts of yin and yang, harmony between human and nature, and the five elements of wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. Sometimes she even translates the TCM vocabulary and scripts into Vietnamese so she can remember and understand them better.
Overseas students of TCM, like Phan, are not rare. According to a report, the total number of international students studying TCM in China was 8, 187 last year, with the largest population of 6,441 coming from Asian countries, followed by 832 from Africa and 432 from Europe. Also, many Chinese medical universities had projects that sent professors overseas to teach TCM.
The fast- developing situation of TCM is not limited to schools and clinics. It has also become a lifestyle choice for many young people.
21.Which of the following best explains “practitioner” underlined in Paragraph 1?
A.Visitor. B.Officer. C.Student. D.Doctor.
22.How did Phan Thi Kim Chi find the TCM basic theory course?
A.Tough. B.Inspiring. C.Confusing. D.Common.
23.Why are there many numbers mentioned in Paragraph 3?
A.To attract more students. B.To prove the popularity of TCM.
C.To show the difficulties of promoting TCM. D.To explain causes of students choosing TCM.
24.What is the best title for the text?
A.The Development of TCM B.Global Rise of TCM
C.Promising Future of TCM D.The Hidden Power of TCM
Passage 7
(2023-2024学年高一下•福建三明•期末)Ellen Xu, now 18, well remembers her parents rushing her little sister to the hospital when she was a five-year-old in San Diego, California. Three-year-old Kate fell seriously ill; she had a fever, reddened eyes, a rash (皮疹) and some swelling in her hands and tongue.
At first, the puzzled doctors thought she had a flu, but when her condition didn't improve, the Xus returned to clinic, where. a doctor by chance had experience with Kawasaki disease. Though rare, it's the leading cause of acquired (后天的) heart disease in babies and young children, and its cause remains somewhat mysterious. Luckily, the doctor knew how to treat it and eventually Kate shook off the illness without suffering damage to her heart.
Xu was amazed that the grown-ups couldn't answer her questions about why it was so hard to identify. “In my mind, it was a mystery,” she says, “It was a puzzle I wanted to solve.”
A decade later, wanting to enter a high school science fair, she had an idea: “What if we had a doctor in our pocket?” Using AI, Xu designed a medical app to recognize Kawasaki disease based on five physical symptoms (症状) .
The technology works the same way as apps that can identify birds and plants with photos you've taken on your cellphone. Worried parents can upload a photo that they have taken of their child, and the technology will scan the image for symptoms of Kawasaki disease.
Xu's invention has been used as a web app on the Kawasaki Disease Foundation's website. She says, “It means a lot to me. I want to use Al to help people live happier and healthier lives.”

Passage 8
(2023-2024学年高一下•山东潍坊期末)George Ahearn, who grew up in the farming town of Othello, Washington, co-founded EastWest Food Rescue after learning that COVID-19 was costing local farmers so much business that they were willing to destroy their crops.
His nonprofit has since moved three million pounds of produce from farms in eastern Washington to the western part of the state for distribution to hundreds of food banks and meal programs. “I know these people that I grew up with on one hand, and on the other hand I know there is a need here; I’m just going to connect the two dots,” said Ahearn, 45, who now lives in Bothell, Washington.
He started by calling local food banks who said they would be glad to take some of the produce that would otherwise go to waste. But when he called the farmers, they wanted to give him truck loads of potatoes and onions—more than Ahearn’s car could handle. He also had another problem; food banks needed the potatoes and onions to be cleaned and bagged before donation (捐赠). “What I didn’t realize was the logistical nightmare because I thought I could just show up with potatoes harvested straight from the ground and give them right to the food bank... I couldn’t believe it.”
So, Ahearn put out a call for help on Facebook. That’s how he connected with his two co-founders, Nancy Balin and Zsofia Pasztor. While Balin helped organize the convoy (运输) to drive across Washington to pick up the produce, Pasztor assembled volunteers to clean and bag the food, which was then distributed through connections at her another nonprofit Farmer Frog.
Since May, EastWest Food Rescue has grown the size of its operations and convoys. They have reached three million pounds of donated food.
Aheam has a message for anyone who wants to make their community (社区) a better place, “I have seen minutes of effort move thousands, and thousands of pounds (of food). Just figure out what you are passionate about and what you could get involved in.”
29.How did Ahearn help his local community?
A.By doing volunteer work. B.By making food donations.
C.By purchasing their produce. D.By moving produce to food banks.
30.What troubled Ahearn when carrying out his plan?
A.He knew little about packaging. B.The produce was too much to take away.
C.The food banks were too far away. D.Much of the produce had gone bad.

A.Many hands make light work.
B.Actions speak louder than words.
C.The longest journey begins with the first step.
D.Never was a good work done without great effort.
32.What can be the best title for the text?

Passage 9
(2023-2024学年高一下•河南信阳•期末)Genetic (基因的) forms of blindness affect thousands of people. Leber Congenital Amaurosis (LCA), is a rare condition that occurs in one in 40,000 newborns and people with LCA have a genetic mutation (突变) that causes highly reduced vision and complete blindness in around a third of the people who have it, reported New Atlas. There are no approved treatment options but now there is new hope in restoring vision in people with the condition.
The BRILLIANCE trial, which has been running since 2020, has been researching ways to use CRISPR gene-editing to change the gene that is responsible for LCA.There are 14 participants-12 adults and two children-in the trial and this is the first time that the gene-editing treatment was delivered directly to the eye. The results of the first three years has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
In the trial, reported CNN, each patient received treatment in only one eye so the results could be weighed against the untreated eye. Each participant underwent a surgical procedure that injected a drug called EDIT-101 that contains the CRISPR gene-editing components, directly inside the cells under the retina (视网膜). Four outcomes were measured that included: identifying different objects and the letters on an eye chart; how well the participants could navigate a maze; how well they could see colored lights; and their own reported improvements in vision, according to New Atlas.
“There is nothing more rewarding to a physician than hearing a patient describe how their vision has improved after a treatment,” Mark Pennesi, corresponding author of the study, told New Atlas. “One of our trial participants has shared several examples, including being able to find their phone after misplacing it and knowing that their coffee machine is working by seeing its small lights.”
“While these types of tasks might seem trivial to those who are normally sighted, such improvements can have a huge impact on quality of life for those with low vision.”
33.How does the author explain the condition of LCA is uncommon?
A.By making a comparison. B.By giving an example.
C.By making an assumption. D.By offering scientific data.
34.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

(2023-2024学年高一下•湖南衡阳•期末)After age and genetics (传性), being a woman is the single most important risk factor for developing Alzheimer’s disease(阿尔茨海默病),experts say, “Two out of every three brains affected by Alzheimer’s disease are women's brains," said Dr, Richard Isaacson, director of the Alzheimer's Prevention Clinic in the Center for Brain Health at Florida Atlantic
University’s Schmidt College of Medicine. Now, a new study has good news when it comes to giving women a chance to reduce their increased risk, Personalized lifestyle interventions (干预)-such as diet, exercise, stress reduction and sleep hygiene were able to reduce Alzheimer’s risk factors in both sexes, but they worked even better in women.
“Our individually tailored interventions led to greater improvements in women compared to men across risk scales for Alzheimer's and cardiovascular(心血管的) disease,” said Isaacson, who coauthored the paper.
“Lifestyle changes such as increased exercise, improved sleep and diet, and reduced stress can impact brain health. This study clearly stresses the need for additional larger studies to be able to better predict the baseline cognitive trail in aging females versus males,” said Rudolph Tanzi, a professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School,
“ As we aim to find ways to block out this disease in the early stage, we will need to know if prevention and treatment strategies will work equally on both men and women. This new study clearly brings us a big step closer to that goal, ” Tanzi added.
Finding that women were able to reduce their risk even more than men is welcome news,as it provides a promising area for future study and gives hope that women can tip the battle against Alzheimer's in their favor. “By treating people in an evidence based yet safe way, using various lifestyles and medical interventions, we've shown that you can really make an impact on brain health,” he said.
37.What can we know from paragraph 1?
A.Age and genetics have no impact on Alzheimer’s.

(2023-2024学年高一下·江苏扬州·期末)Not many people are comfortable going deep underground. There’s something pretty scary about diving into the pitch-black abyss (深谷), towards the mysteries at the centre of the Earth. But humans have been going underground — mining, caving, living and the like. All over the world you’ll find all manner of superb underground phenomena. Here are our favourites.
1. Salina Turda, Romania
A Transylvanian underground theme park sounds kind of like something out of ScoobyDoo. But it actually exists—and isn’t frightening at all. Built deep below the Earth’s surface in a salt mine, Salina Turda features attractions like a panoramic (全景的) wheel, mini-golf, bowling, table tennis and even boating on a mine lake.
2. Derinkuyu, Turkey
The underground city at Derinkuyu, in Turkey’s Cappadocia region, dates back thousands of years. It’s the deepest of its kind in the region, a web of winding passages over eight levels, reaching a depth of 85 metres. Living underground allowed the citizens of Derinkuyu to avoid extreme temperatures and more easily fight against invaders. Though not inhabited today, the site features the remains of schools, shops and churches.
3. Ajanta Caves, India
Considering that they’re cut deep into a rock face, the 30 or so caves of Ajanta are surprisingly well lit. You can do exactly that at Thrihnukagigur in Iceland. A lift takes visitors 700 feet down into the volcano’s magma chamber (岩浆室). We’re assured that Thrihnukagigur is safely dormant (休眠的), having not erupted in 4,000 years, but even so, it takes a certain kind of thrill-seeker to actively want to get up close and personal with a volcano.

Mahachai Line
Start: Thonburi; End: Samut Songkhram
Start at Thonburi’s Wongwian Yai train station, just across the Chao Phraya River from Bangkok. From the window, you can see homes, temples, shops, palm trees and rice fields. Built in the 1940s, the Death Railway is Thailand’s most famous and historic train line. A total of 688 bridges were built along the route (路线). The trains that run the Death Railway are 3rd-class, meaning they have no air-conditioners and mostly wooden benches. It’s a tourist line, so there’re stops for short visits to historical sites and a cave.
Beach Train
Start: Bangkok; End: Hua Hin
This route skirts around the Gulf of Thailand. Your destination, Hua Hin, is Thailand’s original beach resort The central attraction of the route is Hua Hin’s red-and-white train station, which was built in 1926. The train is largely responsible for Hua Hin’s wealth; therefore, the station is a major source of pride.
Train to Laos
Start: Bangkok; End: Thanaleng

Four of the Most Beautiful Roads in the United StatesAlaska Highway, Alaska
In the early days of World War II, fears of a potential attack on the Territory of Alaska stimulated military officials to create the Alaska Highway.
Eagle-eyed motorists may spot caribou, moose and grizzly bears along the road. Those keen on eyeing bald eagles should plan a stop near the Canadian border at the Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge. Its wetlands serve as a pit stop for 180 species of migratory birds, including America’s national bird, on their springtime journey towards the ice fields and glaciers at the road’s northernmost reaches.
Highway 101, California
“The 101” is a drivable California postcard, taking motorists past the Hollywood sign in Los Angeles, over the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. The route offers a chance to not only see some of the best that California has to offer, but also smell and taste it when the road cuts through the heart of Sonoma’s wine country. Over 400 different wineries there produce varieties of wine.
Hana Highway, Hawaii
The Hana Highway dates to the 16th century, when Native Hawaiians first paved the road with lava blocks. Today, the route is one of Maui’s greatest tourist draws, with its 617 switchbacks hiding some of the island’s best attractions. The natural pools formed by waterfalls at Waikamoi Stream are a swimmer’s dream. Locals may be driving much faster. So if you see a local person driving behind you, you should pull over as soon as you can.Going-to-the-Sun Road, Montana
Millions of years ago, the area around Montana’s Glacier National Park was submerged under ice a mile deep. The most striking reminders of the region’s prehistoric origins are the 25 glaciers that give the park its name. The glaciers have been shrinking for decades, and more than 50 have disappeared entirely since the mid-1800s. Visitors may be flocking to Glacier to see these natural wonders before they vanish.

C.They are driving very fast. D.They are not friendly to the tourists.
Passage 16
(2023-2024学年高一下·广东中山·期末)Beijing is a city of opposites, with one foot in the past and another in the present. Nowhere is this contrast more visible than in its architecture, where traditional and modern styles coexist. Here are three spots to enjoy the ancient architecture as well as spring flowers in Beijing.
Longevity Hill
Sitting at the back of Longevity Hill, the Flower Pavilion and Glass Tower are hidden spots in the Summer Palace where you can breathe in the colorful spring in quietude. The Flower Pavilion was constructed in 1754, and the Glass Tower in the pavilion was a gift from Emperor Qianlong to celebrate his mother’s 60th birthday.
The pavilion was destroyed by British and French soldiers in 1860 while the colorful tower survived. The original Flower Pavilion is in ruins but the flowers in the garden still blossom (开花) every spring.
The Imperial Garden
The Imperial Garden in the Forbidden City was only enjoyed by members of the royal (皇家的) family, but now its beauty can be appreciated by the public. The pink apricot flowers in front of the palaces have viewed the change of history.
Drum Tower and Bell Tower
Beijing’s Bell and Drum Towers lie on the northern end of the central line of the inner city. Looking at each other for hundreds of years, the two towers are surrounded by hutongs and trees.

1.Why was the author at a loss after high school?
A.She suffered from a lack of confidence.
B.She fell behind her peers in performance.
C.She was afraid to choose a wrong university.
D.She struggled to decide a future direction.
2.Which aspect of marketing attracted the author?
A.Its business courses. B.Its exciting career opportunities.
C.Its stress on technical skills. D.Its courses related to writing.
3.What led the author to think about changing her major?
A.The active encouragement from a friend.
B.Reduced interest in communications.
C.The growing passion for marketing courses.
D.Access to numerous new opportunities.
4.What does the author advise high school students to do?
A.Think twice about major selection.
B.Be open to changing academic paths.
C.Concentrate all their efforts on study.
D.Engage in self-reflection consistently.
【答案】1.D 2.A 3.C 4.B

根据第一段中的“High school ended and all I remembered was feeling stuck. Most of my peers (同龄人) had picked out their majors and some even planned their careers. But I was still wondering about that. (高中结束了,我只记得被困住了。我的大多数同龄人都选择了自己的专业,有些人甚至计划了自己的职业生涯。但我仍对此感到疑惑。)”可知,作者在高中毕业后感到迷茫主要是因为她在确定未来方向上遇到了难题。故选D项。
2.推理判断题。根据第三段中的“It would complement (补充) my communications degree while providing me with the necessary business courses that were outside of the program. Without hesitation, I scheduled marketing into my studies, with the goal of using that newfound knowledge to accompany the technical skills that my major would provide me with. (它将补充我的沟通学位,同时为我提供课程之外的必要商业课程。我毫不犹豫地将市场营销纳入我的学习计划,目的是利用新学到的知识来配合我的专业将为我提供的技术技能。)”可知,作者认为市场营销能够作为她传播学学位的补充,同时也能提供课程之外的必要的商业知识,也就是说市场营销对作者的吸引力主要在于它的商业课程。故选A项。
根据倒数第二段中的“As time went on, I found myself enjoying the marketing courses more than the communications courses, and it was then that I first began to consider making a change. (随着时间的推移,我发现自己更喜欢营销课程而不是沟通课程,就在那时,我第一次开始考虑做出改变。)”可知,作者在大学期间发现自己更喜欢营销课程,而不是最初选择的传播学课程,这促使作者考虑转专业。故选C项。

6.Why did Ernesto Rodriguez bring landscapes into classrooms?
A.To connect the students with nature.
B.To promote his photography skills.
C.To improve the teachers’ performance.
【答案】5.B 6.A 7.D 8.B
文章第一段讲到“Some of the classrooms at Taft Elementary in Santa Clara, California, have one disadvantage in common: They don’t have windows. (加利福尼亚州圣克拉拉市塔夫脱小学的一些教室有一个共同的缺点:没有窗户。)”可知,这个学校的一些教室面临的一个共同的挑战是它们都没有窗户。故选B。
6.推理判断题。文章第三段讲到“This was confirmed by former school psychologist Ernesto Rodriguez, who said the lack of windows does affect kids, because research shows being in and around nature eases anxiety and benefits students. Though no longer a practicing psychologist, perhaps he knows now more than ever the impact nature has on mental health. (前学校心理学家埃内斯托·罗德里格斯证实了这一点,他说缺乏窗户确实会影响孩子,因为研究表明,在大自然中和大自然周围可以缓解焦虑,对学生有益。)”以及第四段“It was during his training to become a park ranger that he learned a fact that kids who have views out windows to trees do better academically, emotionally and creatively. (正是在他接受公园护林员培训的过程中,他了解到一个事实,即那些能看到窗外树木的孩子在学业、情感和创造力方面都做得更好)”可知,Emesto Rodriguez 将风景“带进”教室是为了将学生和自然联系在一起。接触大自然对孩子们的身心健康有益。故选A。
文章第五段中““Beautiful,”one student said as she entered the room. Another student said the trees brought him peace, “When you look up, it feels like you’re sitting under a tree.” (“太美了,”一个学生走进房间时说。另一名学生说,这些树给他带来了平静,“当你抬头看的时候,感觉就像你坐在树下。”)”引用的两个学生的评价可知,他们对教室天花板上的风景是很喜欢的。故选D。
8.推理判断题。文章最后一段中Logan Earmest的话“I think my attendance is going to go up. The kids are going to want to come here more frequently. Overall, I think the kids are going to be happier (我想我的出勤率会上升。孩子们会想更频繁地来这里的。总的来说,我认为孩子们会更快乐)”可知,他对教室里的改变是持欣赏和赞同的态度的。故选B。
C.He knocked over the table. D.He met with different family rules.
10.What does the underlined word “tyrant” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.The son. B.The pet. C.The family. D.The habit.
11.What can we infer about Nathaniel from the last two paragraphs?
A.He is hard to get on with. B.He is terrified of challenges.
C.He has risen to fatherhood. D.He doubts his parenting ability.
12.What is the text mainly about?
A.How to get along well with parents.
B.How to observe others’ household rules.
C.Children brought up, parents let them go.
D.Parent-child role turned, payback time comes.
【答案】9.D 10.A 11.C 12.D
根据第二段中“‘Dad, don’t leave the water running when you brush your teeth,’ Nathaniel warned on our first night. ‘Don’t pull extra paper towels to wipe the kitchen appliances! ’ I was instructed to use the dishcloth, which didn’t seem clean. More rules followed. Not to leave shoes sitting out. Don’t wear a neck warmer when walking the dog in the morning — it will warm up when we get to the park. Don’t drink too much juice.”(“爸爸,刷牙的时候不要让水一直流着,”内森尼尔在我们来的第一个晚上就警告我。“不要用额外的纸巾去擦厨房电器!”我被要求使用抹布,但那看起来并不干净。后面还有更多的规矩。不要把鞋子放在外面。早上遛狗的时候不要戴脖套——到公园的时候它就会暖和起来的。不要喝太多果汁。)可知,作者第一次去儿子家时,遇到了不一样的家庭规矩。故选D项。
10.词义猜测题。根据第二段中儿子对作者要求“Not to leave shoes sitting out. Don’t wear a neck warmer when walking the dog in the morning — it will warm up when we get to the park. Don’t drink too much juice.”(不要把鞋子放在外面。 和第三段“At first I wondered how I’d raised such a tyrant.”(一开始,我在想我怎么养了这样一个tyrant。) 故选A项。
根据倒数第二段中“In the next few days, he cleaned dishes after dinner, assuming he would do a better job than my wife and me. He also set our daily outings, including an inspired trip to the Autry Museum.”(在接下来的几天里,他在晚饭后洗碗,认为他会比我和妻子做得更好。 和最后一段“We were walking along El Matador Beach our last afternoon and hit an extended range of rocks. I suggested stopping there, because it’s too hard for me to mount the rocks. Nathaniel wouldn’t hear of it and encouraged me across one large stone to the next, patiently telling me where to place my feet and hands as ocean waves came close. I was terrified, but after a couple hundred yards we made it to a fresh sandy stretch. 'You did it! I’m really proud,' he said, smiling, as if I’d just learned to ride a bike. It was then that I knew for sure that the son has taken on the role of a father.”(最后一个下午,我们沿着埃尔马塔多尔海滩散步,遇到了一片延伸的岩石。
通读全文,尤其结合第一段中“There comes a time for every family when the tables turn and the parent has to answer to the child. ”(每个家庭都会有这样一个时刻,那就是形势逆转,父母不得不向孩子作出回应。)和最后一段中“It was then that I knew for sure that the son has taken on the role of a father.”(那时我才确切地知道儿子已经承担了父亲的角色。)

根据第二段Nathaniel说的话“Dad, don’t leave the water running when you brush your teeth,”(爸爸,刷牙的时候不要让水流着)和第三段“At the beginning, I wondered how I raised such a bossy child.”(一开始,我很奇怪我怎么养了一个这么专横的孩子。),以及第四段“And so I smilingly followed Nathaniel’s nagging(唠叨).”(因此我微笑着听从Nathaniel的唠叨。) 故选A。
根据第四段“I remembered being angry at my own father’s commands growing up, how he always tidied my desk or came into my room at dusk to close the windows. And so I smilingly followed Nathaniel’s nagging(唠叨).”(我记得在我成长的过程中,我对父亲的命令以及他总是整理我的桌子,或者在黄昏时进我的房间关窗户非常生气,因此我微笑着听从Nathaniel的唠叨。)

It was then that I knew for sure that the son also rises to fatherhood.”(“你做到了!”
根据第一段“Here comes a time for every family when the tables turn and the parent has to answer to the child. Mine came recently when my wife and I visited our son in Los Angeles.”(现在每个家庭都到了局面转换的时候了,父母必须对孩子负责。 和最后一段““You did it! I’m really proud,” he said, smiling, as if I’d just learned to ride a bike. It was then that I knew for sure that the son also rises to fatherhood.”(“你做到了!” 故选A。
Passage 5
(2023-2024学年高一下·河南三门峡·期末)“You must write about how they survived. Everybody wants to hear that.” I told my fifth-grade daughter Sally, who was constructing her social studies report.
21.What does the author think of the school cafeteria?
A.Crowded and noisy. B.Quiet and empty.
C.Harmonious and lively. D.Comfortable and satisfying.
22.The author mentions mermaids in paragraph 4 to .
A.show his fondness of his schoolmates
B.highlight his love of reading literature
C.stress his desire for peace and being alone
D.share his imagination of the underwater world
23.What was the author’s attitude toward the girl at first?
A.Curious. B.Grateful. C.Impatient. D.Uninterested.
24.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.The Girl Who Saved Me B.The Benefits of Swimming
C.The Bottom of a Swimming Pool D.The School Troubles that Pained Me

根据文章第四段“Mermaids (美人鱼) didn’t have to go to school. Mermaids didn’t call other mermaids nerds (怪胎).”(美人鱼不用去上学。美人鱼不会叫其他美人鱼怪胎。)可推知,作者提到美人鱼是为了强调他对和平和独处的渴望。故选C。
23.推理判断题。根据文章第五段“I didn’t think anything of it — girls like her usually didn’t want to be seen around me — until I felt a soft tug on my ankle, and I spied her next to me.”(我没有多想——像她这样的女孩通常不愿被人看见在我身边——直到我感到有人轻轻地拉了一下我的脚踝,我发现她就在我旁边。)
根据全文内容,尤其是文章第一段“There’s comfort in the bottom of a swimming pool.”(在游泳池底很舒服)的最后一段“I didn’t spend so much time at the bottom of a swimming pool after that.
“I downloaded a few episodes and discovered that they were perfect for those days when I drove a long distance. It turned the boring hours into enjoyable learning experiences,” says Seligman, 62, an author who spent eight years in China. “Montgomery brings Chinese history and culture to life in a completely new way. As you listen, you often get the impression that he was a witness (见证者) to the events he described,” says Seligman.
Many overseas Chinese are grateful to Montgomery for reconnecting them with their ancestral roots. And to his surprise, local Chinese are also welcoming the show as a great resource for learning English.

根据最后一段Montgomery所言“After more than 25 years doing sales and marketing of ‘made in China’ products, I’ve now become a sort of a salesman of Chinese history(销售和营销“中国制造”的产品25年,我现在已经是一位中国历史的销售员)”可知,他通过制作英语播客介绍中国历史,把中国历史“销售”到世界各地,符合本文大意。故选A项。

【答案】13.A 14.B 15.C 16.A
根据第二段中“There can be significant barriers to behavioral activation (行为激活) in some patients — they might be stuck in a hospital bed, or have no means to involve themselves in enjoyable activities like getting outside, exercising and volunteering. We started wondering whether simulated (模拟的) pleasant activities could be a good first step for them.”(对于一些患者来说,行为激活可能存在重大障碍——他们可能被困在医院病床上,或者没有办法参与户外活动、锻炼和志愿服务等令人愉快的活动。 和第五段中“Bullock believes the cost and ease of many VR platforms — especially those that have mobile phones put into cheap cardboard headsets — make it an easy treatment to promote.”(布洛克认为,许多虚拟现实平台的成本和易用性——尤其是那些将手机放在廉价的纸板耳机上的平台——使其很容易推广。) 故选A项。
根据第四段中““People who might otherwise have barriers to getting treatment might be open to using this technology in their own homes,” said Margot Paul, a professor of mental and behavioral sciences.”(精神和行为科学教授Margot Paul说:“那些可能无法获得治疗的人可能会在自己家中使用这种技术。”)
根据最后一段“The team says larger and longer-term studies are needed to find the best ways to practice virtual behavioral activation, as well as which patient populations might be best targeted with the VR treatment. They also think more efforts are needed to inform doctors about how to practice VR behavioral activation appropriately.”(该团队表示,需要进行更大规模、更长期的研究,以找到实践虚拟行为激活的最佳方法,以及哪些患者群体最适合接受虚拟现实治疗。
根据第一段“Some of the 17 million Americans suffering from major depressive disorder may soon receive a surprising new suggestion from their doctors: Have fun on a virtual reality (VR) device.”(在1700万患有重度抑郁症的美国人中,一些人可能很快就会收到医生的一个令人惊讶的新建议:在虚拟现实(VR)设备上玩得开心。) 因此,文章的最佳标题应该是“VR — a simple tool to treat depression”(VR——一种简单的治疗抑郁症的工具)。故选A项。

31.What does Ahearn’s message in the last paragraph indicate?
A.Many hands make light work.
B.Actions speak louder than words.
C.The longest journey begins with the first step.
D.Never was a good work done without great effort.
32.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Food banks benefit from fresh produce
B.Social media marketing for nonprofits
C.Farmers’ businesses affected by Covid-19
D.Connecting the dots between farm and hunger
【答案】29.D 30.B 31.A 32.D

根据最后一段中“I have seen minutes of effort move thousands, and thousands of pounds (of food)(短短几分钟时间,这些几千镑的农产品就搬运完了)”可知,许多人都加入到Ahearn的公益组织,东西很快就运完了。 故选A。
根据文章的主要内容,尤其第一段“George Ahearn, who grew up in the farming town of Othello, Washington, co-founded East West Food Rescue after learning that COVID-19 was costing local farmers so much business that they were willing to destroy their crops.(乔治•埃亨(George Ahearn)在华盛顿的农业小镇奥瑟罗长大,在了解到2019冠状病毒病让当地农民损失惨重,以至于他们愿意毁掉自己的作物后,他与他人共同创立了东西方粮食救援组织(East West Food Rescue)。)”
A.The outcome of the trial. B.The process of the trial.
C.The influence of the trial. D.The foundation of the trial.
35.What is the attitude of Mark Pennesi towards the study?
A.Approving. B.Doubtful. C.Indifferent. D.Subjective.
36.What is the passage mainly about?
A.A new function of gene-editing. B.A complete cure for blindness.
C.A promising treatment for LCA. D.A new discovery of medicine.
