Koalas in Australia are in a hard situation, and the story of Emerson shows how challenging it is to protect these cute animals.
Ten-month-old Emerson stared at me with his big eyes, as if asking for something. The nurse smiled, “He’s hungry for his milk.” Four months ago, when Emerson arrived at the Northern Rivers Koala Hospital in New South Wales, Australia, he was small and not that healthy. Volunteers had to use a syringe (注射器) to feed him. Under the careful caring of them, he’s healthy now and weighs about five pounds.
Jen Ridolfi, the volunteer coordinator at Friends of the Koala, which runs the hospital, told me, “When new volunteers come, I first tell them not to hug these koalas.” She’s strict about this for a reason. Too much physical contact might cause them stress, which could be bad for their health. Every year, around 350 koalas come to the hospital, but only about 30% can be saved.
In recent years, some koala populations have decreased by 80%. Koalas aren’t Australia’s most endangered animals, but they’re the ones people really want to save. Since 2019, the Australian government has spent a lot of money, about 50 million US dollars, protecting them.
Koalas are a national symbol and bring in lots of tourists. But koalas like to live in nice, coastal areas which are also popular with humans. This means people have to give up some things to protect koalas. It will be a test to see how far we’re willing to go to save this cute animal.
19. What was Emerson like when he first arrived at the hospital?
A. Healthy. B. Weak. C. Heavy. D. Big.
20. How many koalas can be saved at the Northern Rivers Koala Hospital every year?
A. About 50. B. About 100. C. About 200. D. About 300.
21. What does the underlined word “This” refer to in the last paragraph?
A. Koalas aren’t Australia’s most endangered animals
B. Koalas are a national symbol and welcomed by tourists.
C. The areas where koalas love to live are also popular with humans.
D. The Australian government has spent much money protecting koalas.
22. Which might be the best title for the passage?
A. The Ways to Protect Koalas in Australia B. The National Treasure of Australia, Koalas

I’ve had a long argument with a girl named Summer ever since we met in kindergarten (幼儿园). It all started with a small cubby (小柜子). Six-year-old Summer asked me to take my backpack out of “her” cubby.
“You don’t own this cubby,” six-year-old me replied. “Why don’t you just use a different cubby?”
“I’ve been using this cubby all week,” said Summer. “You’re the one who needs to use a different cubby!”
“Well,” I said. “I don’t think you’re being very friendly.”
“Well,” said Summer. “Maybe that’s because you’re not my friend!”
In the first grade, during a ball game, we argued again. Summer said I was out of the game because the ball bounced twice, but I knew it only bounced once by the rule. She said I was a sore loser, and I said the same about her.
In the third grade, we had another disagreement when we were in the chess club. I questioned her move (走棋), and she got angry, saying the wrong move was that she agreed to play with me.
As you can see, Summer and I never got along. But something surprising changed us. We both acted as rabbits in our school’s winter play. At first, we tried to pay no attention to each other. But our director Mr. Jackson, knew we had problems with each other and wanted to help. So he asked us to team up and sing a song together. We were nervous but agreed.
During rehearsals, we practiced over and over again in order to give a wonderful performance on the stage (舞台) and we started talking with each other before the big show. We realized our memories of past arguments were completely different. We ended up laughing about those silly fights. After lots of practice, our performance was a great success, and the audience couldn’t stop laughing. I learn that not everyone gets along well at first, but sometimes, a conversation can turn enemies into friends.
23. What was the first argument between the writer and Summer about?
A. A ball game rule. B. A cubby in kindergarten.
C. A chess move in the club. D. A song in the school play.
24 How did Summer feel when the writer questioned her move?
A. Angry. B. Surprised. C. Nervous. D. Sad.
25. What does the underlined word “rehearsals” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Practice before the big show. B. Performances on the stage.
C. Meetings with the director. D. Discussions about the play.
26. What did the writer learn from the experience?
A. School plays need careful practice. B. Following rules is important in games.

A. About 50. B. About 100. C. About 200. D. About 300.

C. The Story of a Little Koala Named Emerson D. The Challenges of Koala Protection in Australia

During rehearsals we practiced over and over again in order to give a wonderful performance on the stage (舞台) and we started talking with each other before the big show. We realized our memories of past arguments were completely different. We ended up laughing about those silly fights. After lots of practice, our performance was a great success, and the audience couldn’t stop laughing. I learn that not everyone gets along well at first, but sometimes, a conversation can turn enemies into friends.

C A chess move in the club. D. A song in the school play.

A. Angry. B. Surprised. C. Nervous. D. Sad.
25. What does the underlined word “rehearsals” in the last paragraph probably mean?

C. Meetings with the director. D. Discussions about the play.
26. What did the writer learn from the experience?
A. School plays need careful practice. B. Following rules is important in games.

Recently, on Mount Tai in Shandong Province, a special robot dog has been helping with rubbish collection. It walks around, playing voice messages to remind tourists to protect the environment.
Staff from the Taishan Cultural Tourism Group said they tried to find good ways to clean up the mountain. They used the latest technology and learned from other famous places. They thought using robot dogs could be the best solution. Since July, the company has worked with many factories. Finally, they chose Unitree Robotics, a company from Hangzhou, to test rubbish transport on Mount Tai.
Jin Da, a manager at Unitree Robotics, told us about the amazing robot dog called Unitree B2. It’s an industrial four-legged robot. This robot dog is really good at walking up and down stairs. Even when the ground is wet, it can keep its balance. It’s also great at climbing mountains! What’s more, when its battery is full, it can work for four to six hours. And it can carry as much as 120 kilograms!
After three days of testing on Mount Tai, the robot dog could deal with more than 80% of the road conditions there. This successful test shows that the robot dog can work well in hard situations. The data (数据) and experience we got from this test will help us use robot dogs in many other areas in the future, like saving people, exploring new places and transporting things.
Right now, the robot dog is still in the testing stage. The team at Unitree Robotics will make the design even better. Then they will start the next round of testing soon. Who knows? Maybe one day, robot dogs like this will be helping out in many places, making our world cleaner and safer!
