(2024湖南)Would you be able to sleep with one eye open?Bottlenose dolphins(宽吻海豚) can. When they sleep, only half of their brain goes to sleep. They sleep with one eye open to stay safe. Half of their brain sleeps for about two hours before the other half of their brain gets a chance to sleep. Sometimes, the dolphins will keep swimming while they are sleeping.

Dolphins are not fish—they are mammals(哺乳动物). These mammals have lungs(肺). And they don’t have gills(鳃) like fish. They are also warm-blooded and have to go to the surface of the water to get air into their lungs. Dolphins don’t lay eggs. Their young are born alive, and they drink milk from their mothers.

Dolphins are one of the smartest animals in the world. There are many stories about how they save people out of water. They are able to solve many problems like humans. They can even use tools to catch fish. But their cleverness doesn’t end there. Dolphins can also pass on anything they learn to other dolphins, like interesting fishing skills. They communicate with each other in many ways. They use different sounds to talk to each other. Dolphins know the “voices” of other dolphins and even know exactly who is making which sound. Another thing that shows their cleverness is that they can also know themselves in a mirror(镜子) and check different parts of their body in it.

【原创题】Are you interested in weather prediction(预测)? There are some common senses about it.
First, people can know the weather for the next 14 days. But they can’t get it right. The most exact weather report is for today and tomorrow. It helps to know something about the weather.
Second, the probability of precipitation(降水量) is one of the most misunderstood parts of the report. A 40% chance of rain means for any place within the forecast area. If you’re on your way to work, you’re more likely to get wet than if you stay in one place.

Third, please pay attention to a thunderstorm(雷暴) warning. It means the thunderstorm is coming and you need to get indoors at once.
Fourth, the lightning can happen before you see rain or hear thunder. If you’re in an open area, try to be the lowest possibly. If you are in a car, please get the windows closed.
Fifth, the world is warming. Temperature increases in the Arctic, causing a lot of changes. For example, the temperature in Canada has increased by a total of about 1. 7℃ since 1948, twice as fast as that in the rest of the world. This has led to increased storm activities, wildfire, and heat waves across the country.

(2024枣庄改编)El Nino causes too much water, a long period of dry weather and other bad weather conditions around the world.
El Nino is the name of the bad weather that happens in the Pacific Ocean. In summer, the rain falls on South Asia. But in some years, the Pacific Ocean moves this rainfall east. This warms the ocean as it travels, before finally reaching the coasts of North and South America. Cold water is pushed out of the way by the warm water. As fish don’t like warm water, they swim to other places. Birds that depend on them also move away.

The warmer temperatures cause too much water in southern US and South America. And because the warm rain clouds move east, long periods of dry weather happen in South Asia, Australia and even Africa.
El Nino usually lasts nine to twelve months. But its influences are felt around December. It doesn’t happen every year though, usually between two to seven years.

The strongest El Nino happened in 1982—1983. In the West Pacific, it caused very serious dry weather, sandstorms and forest fires in Australia, Africa and South Asia. In the East Pacific, Peru(秘鲁) was hit with about 3 m of rainfall in areas where about 15 cm was normal. It is the heaviest rainfall ever recorded. That year’s El Nino caused 1, 300~2, 000 people to die.
