Unit6 Looking into science
Lesson1 Let’s do an experiment!
Learning Objectives
Knowledge Objectives
• Understand the scientific concept of air pressure and its role in everyday phenomena.
• Master key science vocabulary to describe scientific processes accurately.
Ability Objectives
• Explain the experiment's procedure and its scientific principle clearly in simple English.
• Apply the new vocabulary in real contexts through role-play and short oral presentations.
1.7.2013
Before we start, let's be clear about our goals for today. By the end of this lesson, you will understand what air pressure is and be able to use new words to talk about science experiments. You'll also be able to read a dialogue and explain the experiment in English.

首先,我们来认识“杂交水稻之父”袁隆平。他毕生的梦想就是“让所有人远离饥饿”。通过不懈努力,他成功培育出杂交水稻,极大地提高了粮食产量,不仅解决了中国的吃饭问题,也为世界粮食安全做出了巨大贡献。他勇于创新、扎根田野的精神,激励着我们每一个人。

3 Listen to the conversation and answer the questions.
A What keeps the water in the jar?
The force of the air(The air pressure )

3 Listen to the conversation and answer the questions.
B Why does Danny put on his raincoat?
Because he thinks the water will pour out and he will get wet.

3 Listen to the conversation and answer the questions.
C What does Danny conclude?
He concludes that air is stronger than he thought.

4 Listen to the experiment and put the sentences in the correct order.
□Put a piece of cardboard over the jar.
□The jar of water is upside down, but the water stays in the jar. This is because air pressure pushes the cardboard onto the jar.
□Fill the glass jar with water.
□Turn the glass jar over quickly. Hold your hand on the cardboard for a few seconds.
□Remove your hand from underneath the jar. What happens?
□There is more air pressure outside the jar than inside it.

Retell the procedures of the experiment.
Cover the top with a piece of cardboard.
Take the hand off the cardboard.
Fill the jar with water.
Turn the jar upside down and hold it there.
The air pressure helps the cardboard hold the water in the jar.

Summary
Summary
Key Vocabulary
experiment: A scientific test to discover facts.
pressure: The force of air or liquid pushing.
conclude: To form an opinion after testing.
tightly: Firmly fixed or closed.
Key Concept
Air Pressure!
It’s the invisible force created by the weight of the air all around us. This force pushes equally in all directions and is strong enough to counteract gravity!
The Jar Trick
The air pressure pushing up on the cardboard from the outside of the jar was stronger than the weight of the water pulling down from the inside. It’s like an invisible hand holding the card in place!
✨ Remember: Science is all about discovering the invisible forces that shape our world! ✨

Let’s role-play !
2. Listen to the conversation and role-play the experiment.

5. Discuss in groups. Describe an experiment you have done.
I have done an egg‑floating experiment at home. First, I poured some water into a glass. I put an egg in it, and the egg sank to the bottom. Next, I added lots of salt into the water and stirred it well. Slowly, the egg began to rise and float in the middle of the glass. Salt makes the water denser. Denser water gives more upward force to hold the egg up. I found this experiment quite amazing.

6.Listen to the song and sing along.

Homework
Homework
01
Try the jar experiment at home with your parents! Remember to handle water and glass carefully to avoid spills or accidents.
02
Write a 50-word paragraph describing your experiment. Include at least 3 new words to show what you've learned.
1.7.2013
Here is your homework for today. First, try the experiment at home. Second, write a short paragraph about your experience, using the new words we learned. Finally, please preview the new words for our next lesson.
