Mali lies in the heart of West Africa, where stories are not just told but sung, played, and spread through the voices of Griots These storytellers are more than entertainers; they are historians, poets, musicians, and cultural protectors whose art has shaped Mali’s identity for centuries.
In Mali, where written records were historically rare, Griots became the keepers of oral history. Their knowledge is passed down through generations, ensuring that no detail is lost. Imagine having a living reference book that not only recites historical facts but sings them to you accompanied by the pleasing instruments.
What makes Griots truly fascinating is their double roles as both recorders and creators. They are not just record-keepers; they fill their tales with poetry, humor, and moral lessons. Griots are also inseparable from music, which serves as both a medium and a companion to their storytelling. Instruments are essentials of Griots’ performances. These instruments don’t merely accompany the words; they turn each story into an immersive (沉浸式的) experience.
In modern Mali, the role of Griots has developed, but their importance remains. Griots continue to be highly respected figures in their communities. They are often called upon for important life events such as weddings, naming ceremonies, etc., where their performances add depth and meaning to these important moments.
The Griot tradition also plays a critical role in Mali’s music fields. Many of Mali’s most celebrated musicians bend traditional storytelling with contemporary styles to reach global audiences. This integration has brought international attention to Mali’s rich cultural heritage while ensuring that the Griot tradition remains dynamic and relevant.
Like many other cultural treasures, the Griot tradition faces challenges in the modern world, but efforts are being made to preserve this valuable heritage, from cultural festivals to educational programs that celebrate and teach the art of the Griot.

As a scientist, Sara Cox realizes the dangers her beloved birds face. As an artist, she wants to help everyone else understand too.
Sara stops walking and points excitedly over the drystone wall into the field beyond. There, walking among the wandering sheep, is a lapwing, the official bird of the North Pennines. “They are brilliant,” Sara says, a smile across her face as she watches the small bird peck grass. Early spring marks the return of lapwings to Teesdale, where Sara’s family has lived for two decades.
Sara is out for one of her regular walks for inspiration, making drafts and mental notes to help her with her work. She specializes in making life-size bird sculptures out of wire, and some of her sculptures are installed on a nature road around Durham Wildlife Trust’s reserve at Low Barns near Bishop Auckland.
“It’s about drawing attention to certain birds,” she says, adding: “A lot of the birds I’ve made have been endangered or are on the red list.”
“I’m very conscious the birds that come up here are dropping in number. The environmental impact of what we do on birds is pretty severe, so anything I can do that makes people feel emotion or interest when they look at a sculpture is good for the environment.”
Sara has science degrees from Aberystwyth, Sheffield and Durham, including one in zoology. But she also has a lifelong love of art and passion for creating things. Chirpy, one of the birds she made, recently spent a few weeks in London as part of the Royal Society of British Artists annual exhibition.
“It was an absolute treat to go down and they displayed him beautifully,” Sara says, “People said to me ‘can you bear to let him go’ and I was thinking ‘yeah, absolutely’, because that’ s the point of making these things.”
5.What can be learned about the lapwing?
A.It is an unusually large-sized bird. B.It has lived in Teesdale for 20 years.
C.It is the favorite pet of Sara’s family. D.It flies back to Teesdale in early spring.
6.Why does Sara go for walks in the countryside?
A.To enjoy nature and relax with her family.
B.To study the behavior of birds for her research.
C.To observe birds and gather ideas for her creation.
D.To count the number of lapwings returning in spring.
7.What does the exhibition of Chirpy in London indicate?
A.Sara’s efforts to get her message across widely.
B.Sara’s desire to commercialize endangered bird art.
C.Sara’s attempt to boost her personal influence in art.
D.Sara’s preference for displaying works in urban gallery.
8.Which of the following can be the best title?
A.Why an artist concentrates on making wire birds?

C.How wire sculptures inspire wildlife appreciation?
D.How a scientist hopes her art will help save birds?

Mom’s Decision to Spend More Time with Son
One sunny afternoon, young Timmy sat on the front steps of their cozy house, his chin (下巴) resting on his hands, eyes fixed on the street. His friends were playing in the park across the road, their laughter filling the air, but Timmy didn’t join them. He was waiting for his mom to come home.
Timmy’s mom, Mrs. Thompson, was a hard-working real estate agent She was constantly on the go, showing houses to clients, attending meetings, and working late into the night. Most days, Timmy only saw her in the early morning rush before school or briefly in the evening when she was too tired to do much more than give him a quick hug.
That day, when Mrs. Thompson finally pulled up in her car, she noticed Timmy’s sad expression. As she got out of the car, Timmy ran up to her, his eyes lighting up for a moment. “Mom, can we play a game today? Like we used to?” he asked hopefully. Mrs. Thompson looked at her watch and sighed. “Not today, honey. I have so much work to do. Maybe tomorrow.” Timmy’s shoulders slumped, and he quietly walked back to the steps.
That evening, as Mrs. Thompson sat at her desk, going through piles of paperwork, she couldn’t get Timmy’s disappointed face out of her mind. She realized that she had been so focused on her career that she was missing out on her son’s childhood. After much thought, she made a decision. She would take some time off work to be with Timmy.
The next morning, Mrs. Thompson called her boss and explained the situation. To her relief, her boss was understanding and gave her a week off. She then went to Timmy’s room with a big smile on her face.

范文:
Many teenagers like to chat on the Internet. Technology makes it possible for teenagers to communicate with each other without knowing whom they are talking to. Some teenagers chat online for making new friends or gaining knowledge and information. Others like to share their feelings with their Internet friends to relax themselves. However, this way of communication also has disadvantages. Some teenagers spend too much time chatting on the Internet, which can make it difficult to complete other tasks. Sometimes it is dangerous to talk to total strangers. In my opinion, we should set up a specific time for chatting and try to avoid getting hurt by it.

1.What can we know about Griots in Mali’s history?
A.Much oral history might be lost without them.
B.They just entertained people as musicians.
C.Their role as artists was more important than other artists.
D.They mainly told stories about historians and poets.
2.What can be inferred about Griots’ performances?
A.Instruments are simple but don’t help with storytelling.
B.Music and instruments enhance the cultural experience.
C.Music is just background sound with little value.
D.Modern music has replaced its traditional style.
3.How do Griots continue to be important in modern Mali?
A.By writing history books. B.By improving communication.
C.By giving legal advice. D.By enriching important events.
4.What is the main idea of the text?
A.Mali’s Griot tradition is disappearing.
B.Griots are important in Mali’s entertainment.
C.Griots keep Mali’s culture alive via storytelling and music.
D.Music matters in the Griot tradition’s spread.
【答案】1.A 2.B 3.D 4.C
根据第二段中“In Mali, where written records were historically rare, Griots became the keepers of oral history. Their knowledge is passed down through generations, ensuring that no detail is lost. (在历史上书面记录稀少的马里,游唱艺人成为了口述历史的守护者。他们的知识代代相传,确保没有细节被遗漏。)”可知,在马里的历史中,游唱艺人是口述历史的守护者,如果没有游唱艺人,很多口述历史可能会丢失。故选A项。
根据第三段中“Griots are also inseparable from music, which serves as both a medium and a companion to their storytelling. Instruments are essentials of Griots’ performances. These instruments don’t merely accompany the words; they turn each story into an immersive (沉浸式的) experience. (游唱艺人也与音乐密不可分,音乐既是他们讲故事的媒介,也是陪伴。乐器是游唱艺人表演的必备品。这些乐器不仅仅是为话语伴奏;它们让每个故事都变成一种沉浸式的体验。)”可知,音乐是游唱艺人讲故事的媒介,乐器让每个故事都变成一种沉浸式的体验,所以音乐和乐器增强了游唱艺人表演的文化体验。故选B项。
3.细节理解题。根据第四段中“They are often called upon for important life events such as weddings, naming ceremonies, etc., where their performances add depth and meaning to these important moments. (他们经常被邀请参加重要的人生活动,如婚礼、命名仪式等,在这些活动中,他们的表演为这些重要时刻增添了深度和意义。)”可知,在现代马里,游唱艺人的表演为一些重要时刻增添了深度和意义,它通过丰富重要活动来继续发挥重要作用。故选D项。
4.主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第一段中“These storytellers are more than entertainers; they are historians, poets, musicians, and cultural protectors whose art has shaped Mali’s identity for centuries. (这些讲故事的人不仅仅是表演者;他们是历史学家、诗人、音乐家和文化保护者,几个世纪以来,他们的艺术塑造了马里的形象。)”以及后文对游唱艺人作用的阐述可知,本文主要讲的是游唱艺人通过讲故事和音乐让马里的文化得以传承。故选C项。

B.Why bird populations are increasingly decreasing?
C.How wire sculptures inspire wildlife appreciation?

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
She said, “Timmy, I’m going to take a whole week off work, just for us!” Timmy’s eyes widened in surprise and excitement. He jumped out of bed and hugged his mom tightly. “Really, Mom? That’s amazing!” They spent the morning planning all the things they would do together. They decided to go to the zoo first. As they drove to the zoo, Timmy chatted non-stop, his face glowing with happiness. Upon arrival, they rushed towards the panda enclosure, where they watched in awe as the cute pandas munched on bamboo. Timmy laughed out loud when one panda rolled over like a clumsy ball. Mrs. Thompson photographed these precious moments, feeling a sense of contentment she hadn’t experienced in a long time.
However, just as they were playing, Mrs. Thompson’s phone rang. It was one of her most important clients. The client had an urgent question about a house they were interested in buying. Mrs. Thompson hesitated for a moment. Looking at Timmy’s excited face, she made a choice. She silenced her phone and put it back in her bag. She turned to Timmy and said, “Nothing is more important than this time with you, Timmy.” They spent the rest of the day at the zoo, exploring every corner, and even had a picnic lunch on the grass. By the end of the day, both Timmy and Mrs. Thompson were tired but filled with joy.
