W: That’s a deal.

M: No, it’s for my personal interest. The book is famous all over the world and has been used by many armies to help win battles. I am reading it to improve my chess playing.
W: How will that help you?
M: It should help me make better game plans and play a trick on the person I’m playing against. You know, this book is also used in business situations.
W: To help a company win the competition?
M: Yes. But some managers also use it to become better leaders in their own office. Workplaces can sometimes be like little armies, I think.

The goals were announced at the annual conference of the State Post Bureau in Beijing on Monday. The industry is expected to see continued growth in express deliveries this year, with 95.5 billion parcels forecast to be delivered, a year-on-year increase of 15 percent. China handled 83 billion packages last year, a year-on-year rise of 30.8 percent, the bureau said. Goals have also been set to encourage greener packaging of deliveries. Some 5 million recycled boxes are expected to be used and 20,000 stations will be built by China Post to collect used packaging. 80 percent of packages ordered from online shops will not be wrapped a second time for transportation. The bureau will also encourage companies to use new energy vehicles to deliver packages. To establish a standard for best practice, the bureau and the State Administration for Market Regulation released a list of green wrapping products. The products on the list, which bear a special logo, range from wrapping bags and boxes to tape. Delivery enterprises are being encouraged to use products on the list.

Liz Murray’s life began in the Bronx in1980 in a pretty typical way — she had two parents and a sister, and she had a home to live in with them. But that life quickly turned bad.
While the parents thoughtlessly spent almost every penny, Liz and her sister almost starved to death.
Liz started her education in 1985. She lived in a dirty home and was self-conscious of the unpleasant smell that she gave off from her unwashed body and dirty clothing. The shame caused her to choose not to attend school and stay home.
When Liz was 11, her mother suffered a serious illness. The following year, Liz’s parents separated. Her sister was with her mother, while Liz decided to stay with her father. At age 13, Child Welfare took Liz into care. Eventually, Liz was returned to her mother. Liz began attending junior high school and became friends with her classmates.
In 1996, Liz’s mother passed away, and after that she became homeless. She suddenly realized, “If I could have a family and a home one night and all of them were gone the next that means that life has the ability to change. That means that just as change happens to me so I can cause change in my life.” This caused Liz to make her first real promise — to high school.
She heard about alternative (另类的) high schools and went to as many school interviews as she could. After repeated rejections, Liz met Perry Weiner, the head of Humanities Preparatory Academy. Perry offered her admission to the school, where she finished a four-year high school program in just two years while still living on the streets. From pumping gas at gas stations, to working as a waitress, to walking dogs, she did just about anything to earn money so that she could survive and pay for her study.
Perry later encouraged her to apply to Harvard University, telling her although it was a goal that seemed out of reach, it was not impossible, Liz took his advice. Not only did she graduate at the top of her class, but she also won a scholarship. Her success didn’t stop there. All her hard work paid off when she was accepted by Harvard. Now Liz’s an inspirational speaker.
24.What can we learn about Liz?
A.She was born into a broken family.
B.She received little care from her parents.
C.She has had no fixed place to live since birth.
D.She had to go to a child welfare organization at 11.
25.Why was Liz unwilling to go to school when she was a pupil?
A.She didn’t want to be laughed at. B.She had to care for her sick mother.
C.She had to work to support the family. D.She wanted to save money for the family.
26.What made Liz so determined to attend high school?
A.The death of her mother. B.The influence of her friend.
C.The support of her father and sister. D.The encouragement of Perry Weiner.
27.What does Liz’s story tell us?
A.Love can make a difference. B.Nothing is easy at the top level.
C.It always seems impossible until it’s done. D.Gratitude is the fastest shortcut to happiness.
【答案】24.B 25.A 26.A 27.C
由第二段“While the parents thoughtlessly spent almost every penny, Liz and her sister almost starved to death. (当父母轻率地花掉几乎每一分钱时,Liz和她的妹妹几乎要饿死了)”和第三段中“She lived in a dirty home and was self-conscious of the unpleasant smell that she gave off from her unwashed body and dirty clothing. (她住在一个肮脏的家里,对自己未洗的身体和脏衣服散发出的难闻气味很敏感)”可知,结合Liz父母的所作所为和她脏兮兮的状况,Liz几乎没有得到父母的照顾。故选B项。
25.推理判断题。由第三段中“She lived in a dirty home and was self-conscious of the unpleasant smell that she gave off from her unwashed body and dirty clothing. The shame caused her to choose not to attend school and stay home. (她住在一个肮脏的家里,对自己未洗的身体和脏衣服散发出的难闻气味很敏感。羞愧使她选择不上学,呆在家里)”可知,Liz因为自己脏兮兮而感到羞愧,应该是害怕被嘲笑,小时候才不愿意上学。故选A项。
由第五段中“In 1996, Liz’s mother passed away, and after that she became homeless. (1996年,Liz的母亲去世,之后她无家可归)”和“This caused Liz to make her first real promise — to high school. (这让Liz做出了第一个真正的承诺——上高中)”可知,Liz母亲的去世让她下定决心要上高中。故选A项。
由最后一段中“Perry later encouraged her to apply to Harvard University, telling her although it was a goal that seemed out of reach, it was not impossible, Liz took his advice. Not only did she graduate at the top of her class, but she also won a scholarship. Her success didn’t stop there. All her hard work paid off when she was accepted by Harvard. Now Liz’s an inspirational speaker.
C
Flamingo (火烈鸟) images are everywhere in Florida on tourist T-shirts, hotel names, and the Florida Lottery logo. However, real pink flamingos have been mostly gone from the state since the early 1900s, when hunters nearly wiped them out, seeking their stylish and valuable feathers (羽毛).
Now, however, flamingos seem to be returning to Florida. Birders recorded 101 wild American flamingo sightings across the state in February, according to recently released figures from Audubon Florida. Environmentalists believe many of these birds were carried into the state on the winds of storm in August 2023.
Flamingos have landed in Florida after storms in the past, but they usually don’t stay for too long. This time, birders and wildlife biologists all hope that the creatures can stay there.
In recent decades, people have sometimes seen flamingos in Florida, including a well-known flamingo named Conchy, who was rescued from an airport in the Florida Keys in 2015. The data showed Conchy moved all over the southern part of the state, teaching scientists more about flamingos in Florida in two years than was known in the previous 100 years, writes Lori Rozsa.
Meanwhile, environmentalists have been working to restore (恢复) the local wetland habitats (栖息地). In the Caribbean and Mexico, protection efforts have also helped increase the number of flamingo populations. Now, those efforts seem to be paying off.
This year, forecasters are predicting a particularly bad storms season. It remains to be seen what that will mean for Florida’s burgeoning flamingo population—and other bird species, more broadly.
There may be a few silver linings, however. After storms in September 2022, the number of shorebirds found wrapped in dangerous fishing line dropped by 58 percent in southwest Florida, since fishing piers were destroyed in the storm. “We never welcome storms here in Florida, but we did welcome some passengers,” Jerry Lorenz, director of research for Audubon Florida said.
28.What made pink flamingos almost disappear from Florida in the 1900s?
A.The loss of habitat. B.Tourism industry.
C.Frequent storms. D.The overhunting for their feathers.
29.What do we know about Conchy from paragraph 4?
A.It was born in the Florida Keys.
B.It was found in a zoo in southern Florida.
C.It gave scientists insights into flamingos’ behavior.
D.It never left the area where it was rescued.
30.What does the underlined phrase “silver linings” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.Something easy. B.Something good.
C.Something popular. D.Something interesting.
31.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Impact of Storms on Florida’s Ecosystem
B.Climate Change and Its Effects on Flamingos
C.The Pink Phenomenon: Flamingos’ Impact on Florida’s Culture
D.Flamingos Return to Florida: Hope After Decades of Absence
根据第一段中的“However, real pink flamingos have been mostly gone from the state since the early 1900s, when hunters nearly wiped them out, seeking their stylish and valuable feathers (羽毛).(然而,自20世纪初以来,真正的粉红色火烈鸟大多已经离开该州,当时猎人为了寻找它们时尚而珍贵的羽毛,几乎将它们灭绝)”可知,20世纪初,火烈鸟几乎从佛罗里达消失是因为猎人为了获取它们的时尚且珍贵的羽毛而过度狩猎。故选D项。
根据第四段中的“The data showed Conchy moved all over the southern part of the state, teaching scientists more about flamingos in Florida in two years than was known in the previous 100 years, writes Lori Rozsa.(Lori Rozsa写道,数据显示,Conchy在该州南部各地移动,在两年内向科学家传授了更多关于佛罗里达州火烈鸟的知识,这比过去100年所知的还要多)”可知,Conchy的移动数据让科学家们对佛罗里达的火烈鸟行为有了更多的了解。故选C项。
根据最后一段中的“After storms in September 2022, the number of shorebirds found wrapped in dangerous fishing line dropped by 58 percent in southwest Florida, since fishing piers were destroyed in the storm.(2022年9月的风暴过后,被危险的鱼线缠住的滨鸟数量下降了58%,因为钓鱼码头在风暴中被毁)”可知,风暴破坏了钓鱼码头,减少了危险的钓鱼线缠绕滨鸟的情况,这是一个积极的结果,推测silver linings指的是风暴带来的一些好处,即“something good”。故选B项。
根据第一段中的“However, real pink flamingos have been mostly gone from the state since the early 1900s, when hunters nearly wiped them out, seeking their stylish and valuable feathers (羽毛).(然而,自20世纪初以来,真正的粉红色火烈鸟大多已经离开该州,当时猎人为了寻找它们时尚而珍贵的羽毛,几乎将它们灭绝)”、第二段“Now, however, flamingos seem to be returning to Florida.(然而,现在火烈鸟似乎正在返回佛罗里达州)”以及文章内容可知,本文主要介绍了火烈鸟在几十年的缺席后重新返回佛罗里达,以及环保努力对恢复火烈鸟栖息地的作用,所以“火烈鸟重返佛罗里达:阔别数十年后的希望”适合作为文章标题。故选D项。
D
Where is “space” exactly? This may seem like a simple question, but the answer may be more difficult than you think.
Nowadays, most countries are generally in agreement that space begins when Earth’s atmosphere ends. But no one can tell where atmosphere actually ends and outer space begins. This leaves the door open for a variety of explanations until the Karman Line was recognized by international laws. The so-called Karman Line is an imaginary line 100 kilometers above Earth’s surface. Once this line is crossed, the air is too thin and traditional planes would need to reach the speed of 30,564 kilometers per hour or risk falling back to Earth. According to the international laws, once pilots and aircraft cross that line, they are recognized as astronauts and spacecraft and are free to conduct space operations without concern for international borders (边境).
In the early age of space exploration, the US defined space differently and insisted that space start 19.3 kilometers below the Karman Line, since the US was confident that it would lead and remain to be the leader in the traditional aircraft industry.
Well aware that the US wanted to operate advanced spying (侦查) aircraft safely, many developing countries opposed the idea and sought to establish much higher space limits — 965.6 kilometers above Earth’s surface. This space limit makes things a bit difficult for every country, though. At that height, even the International Space Station and Tiangong Space Station (orbiting between 320 to 435 kilometers up), and many satellites (orbiting 869 kilometers up) would not be considered spacecraft!
In recent years, the US has been trying to determine a “safer border of space”. In 2009, it suggested that the border of space begin at 118 kilometers above Earth’s surface. What was its argument this time? It said that many breakthroughs have been made in space and spying technologies by other countries!
32.What is correct about the Kármán Line according to the international laws?
A.It is unsafe for some countries. B.Traditional planes should not cross it.
C.Pilots can fly freely above it. D.It is the highest line pilots can reach.
33.Many less developed countries suggested that space begin at_______.
A.965.6 kilometers above Earth’s surface
B.118 kilometers above Earth’s surface
C.100 kilometers above Earth’s surface
D.90.7 kilometers above Earth’s surface
34.What does the author most probably think of the US’ suggestions?
A.Smart. B.Unfair. C.Scientific. D.Uncreative.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.Where Does Space Begin Exactly?
B.How High Should the Karman Line Be?
C.How Can We Protect Our National Borders?
D.Why Does the US Want to Change the Karman Line?
【答案】32.C 33.A 34.B 35.A
根据文章第一段“According to the international laws, once pilots and aircraft cross that line, they are recognized as astronauts and spacecraft and are free to conduct space operations without concern for international borders (边境).(根据国际法,一旦飞行员和飞机跨过了这条线,它们就被看做是宇航员或者宇宙飞船,能自由地进行太空操作,而不用担心国际边界的问题。)”
根据文章第四段“Well aware that the US wanted to operate advanced spying(侦查) aircraft safely, many developing countries opposed the idea and sought to establish much higher space limits—965.6 kilometers above Earth’s surface.(知道美国想要安全地操控先进的侦察飞船,因此很多发展中国家反对这一想法,并寻求建立更高的太空限制——在地球表面以上965.6千米处。)”
根据文章最后一段“In recent years, the US has been trying to determine a “safer border of space”. In 2009, it suggested that the border of space begin at l18 kilometers above Earth’s surface. What was its argument this time? It said that many breakthroughs have been made in space and spying technologies by other countries!(近年来,美国一直在试图确定一个“更安全的太空边界”。2009年,它提出太空边界始于地球表面以上118公里处。这次它的论点是什么?它说其他国家在太空和间谍技术方面取得了许多突破!)”可知,美国因为认为其他国家在太空和间谍技术方面取得了许多突破,因此提出太空边界应始于地球表面以上118公里处,这只是为了它自己的利益出发,故可推知,作者认为美国的建议是不公平的,故选B。
35.主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“Where is “space” exactly? This may seem like a simple question, but the answer may be more difficult than you think.(太空到底从哪里开始?这似乎是第一个简单的问题,但答案却比你想象中难得多。)”可知,文章在第一段提出关于太空的起点在哪里的问题,后文分别介绍了不同的国家有不同的看法。由此可知,A项“太空到底从哪里开始?”为文章的最佳标题。故选A。

Make sure to settle on a date when most of your friends are available. 37 This is because most of your attendees will most likely have plans with their family for that Thursday.
38
A Friendsgiving meal is more informal. Instead of roasting a turkey, you could tell friends to each bring a dish to go with the main course you will provide. To avoid guests bringing the same dish, keep a list of who is bringing what.
Decorate your space
Make a sign for your front door that welcomes everyone. On the dining table, there could be colorful place cards you made for each person. To make it more fun, instead of their names, write a little clue about each person and see if everyone can guess theirs. 39
Do an activity together
40 One idea is for your group to do a fun craft together, and your guests can take home what they make. You could also work on a big puzzle (拼图) or just head outside for a ball game.
A.Make a menu
B.Skip the meal
C.It’s also fun to plan an activity for your event.
D.Plus, add ribbons and balloons to make it joyful.
E.The name is a mix of friends and Thanksgiving.
F.This special gathering can help you celebrate your friendships.
G.The weekend either before or after Thanksgiving would be a good choice.

While almost everyone in Asia was celebrating the Year of Rabbit in 2023, the Vietnamese were welcoming the Year of Cat. Then why did the Vietnamese have a different name for the new year?
56 (obvious), Vietnam hasn’t always celebrated the Year of Cat since the zodiac (星座) of rabbit has appeared in many older Vietnamese texts. But it’s unclear when the country started using the cat in 57 (it) celebration. The uncertainty around 58 change between the rabbit and the cat has led to several theories for the origin.
One theory has to do with translation. It’s widely believed that the Chinese word for rabbits 59 (sound) like the Vietnamese word for cats. Another possible 60 (explain) for Vietnam’s unique celebration has to do with the living conditions in China and Vietnam. Originally, the Chinese lived on the grassy plains, while the Vietnamese lived in the lowland forests. As a result, the Chinese chose the rabbit as an animal 61 could be used for food, while the people of Vietnam selected the less wild cat 62 (protect) their home.
Still, these are not the only theories about the origin of the Year of Cat. Ask a Vietnamese aunt or grandparent, you’re sure to hear several more 63 (story) about the Year of Cat. Many of them are related to a party and a race 64 (hold) by God among the animals to determine their order in the zodiac. In the story, the cat was disqualified from the zodiac because the rabbit pushed it into the river 65 it did not finish the race. To punish the rabbit, the Vietnamese decided to celebrate the victimized cat.
56.Obviously 57.its 58.the 59.sounds 60.explanation 61.which/that 62.to protect 63.stories 64.held 65.and/so
此处change是可数名词,根据后文的between the rabbit and the cat可知,此处表示特指“兔子和猫之间的变化”,故应用定冠词,故填the。
此处作后置定语,修饰a party and a race,a party and a race与hold之间被动关系,故应用过去分词作后置定语,故填held。
此处动作的接连发生,故应用并列连词and,连接前后the rabbit pushed it into the river和it did not finish the race两件事,也可以理解为因果关系,“因为兔子将它推进了河里,因此它每能完成比赛”,故也可用so引导结果状语从句,故填and/so。

I hope this email finds you well. I’m excited to share that I’m participating in our school’s Campus Cultural and Creative Design Competition.
Aiming to create a unique piece that showcases the beauty and depth of Chinese culture while remaining contemporary and appealing, I intend to design a stylish bag made from materials of high technology, which are light and soft and impossible to become wrinkled when folded.
Patterns of nine different dragons are designed to be printed on both sides of the fancy bag to symbolize Chinese culture. Since you’re always so insightful and imaginative with design ideas, I’d love to hear your thoughts.
Looking forward to your feedback!
Best regards,
Li Hua

About two years ago, I was a high school student in Beijing, getting ready for one of the most important exams of my life. The night before the big day, I carefully packed my backpack with the essentials: pens, erasers, my ID card, and my exam admission ticket. My parents wished me good luck and reminded me to go to sleep early. Feeling confident, I went to bed to make sure I would be well-rested.
The next morning, I woke up feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness. After breakfast, I grabbed my backpack and headed to the bus stop. As I boarded the bus, I suddenly remembered that I had forgotten to pack my pencils, which were necessary for filling out the answer sheet. Panic set in. There was no time to go back home and fetch them, and the nearest store was too far away.
Desperate, I looked around the bus, hoping to spot a fellow student who might have a spare pencil. My eyes landed on a girl about my age, sitting a few seats ahead, lost in her notes. Gathering my courage, I approached her and explained my dilemma (困境), hoping she might be able to help.
To my surprise, she didn’t hesitate. She opened her pencil case and pulled out a couple of pencils, handing them to me with a reassuring smile. “I always carry extra ones, just in case,” she said. “You can take these.”
Relief washed over me as I accepted the pencils, thanking her sincerely. We chatted for a bit, and I learned that her name was Mei, and that she was also heading to the same exam center. She wished me luck, and we parted ways once we arrived.
With the pencils in hand, I felt a renewed sense of confidence as I entered the exam hall. The exam went smoothly, and I felt I had done my best.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 个左右;
After the exam, I searched for Mei to return her pencils.

After the exam, I searched for Mei to return her pencils. I wandered through the bustling crowd of students, scanning faces and hoping to spot her. Finally, I saw her near the entrance, chatting with some friends. I approached her and handed back the pencils, expressing my heartfelt gratitude once again. Mei smiled warmly and shook her head. “There‘s no need to thank me,” she said. “Helping someone in need is something we all should do. Just remember to pass on the kindness whenever you can.”
Inspired by Mei’s kindness, I decided to pass it on. A few weeks later, I noticed a classmate, Li, struggling with his homework in the library. Remembering Mei’s words, I sat down with Li and patiently explained the concepts he was struggling with. His face lit up with relief and gratitude, just as I did when Mei helped me. Helping him not only lifted his spirits but also brightened my day. From that moment on, I realized that at any time I could help someone, whether it was sharing my notes, offering a kind word, or simply lending an ear.

Plan a Friendsgiving meal
A Friendsgiving is when friends gather together to celebrate their friendships. 36 Hosting a Friendsgiving can be a wonderful way to show thanks to their friends. Here’s how to get started.
Choose a date

This week, I came back to the course to complete two dives with my coach. I finally overcame my fears of diving.

Dear Chris,
I hope this email finds you well.
Best regards,
Li Hua

Plan a Friendsgiving meal
A Friendsgiving is when friends gather together to celebrate their friendships. 36 Hosting a Friendsgiving can be a wonderful way to show thanks to their friends. Here’s how to get started.
Choose a date

I practiced with him though a little unwillingly. There was a huge 48 mismatch between what I thought I’d be doing and what the course 49 included. And all I desired by the end of the practice was 50 , a drink, and some sleep. A while later, however, some rest refreshed me.
This week, I came back to the course to complete two dives with my coach. I finally overcame my fears of diving. I knew that if I didn’t 51 it another shot, I would always carry the fear with me and it would only get 52 with time. I realized the importance of being able to 53 my fear and overcome it. Going through this 54 experience that was far outside my 55 certainly brought me numerous life lessons.
