When I told my mom I was going without my cellphone for a week, she was more nervous than I was. “What are you going to do if you get kidnapped (绑架)?” she asked me. I told her I would be careful.
My mom likes the cellphone because I call her after I’m done with tutoring or meetings so she knows when and where to pick me up. Before I left for summer school on a Monday, my mom and I agreed on where she would pick me up. I asked her to try her best to come on time because she’s usually late. I left my phone in her car. I stood shivering (发抖) and waiting for 20 minutes, then I got a cold. I wondered if she got into a car accident. When she arrived, I ran to the car for warmth. On May 2, 2023, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) called on its 11,500 members to begin a strike in Hollywood, California, and New York City in the US. It was the first writers’ strike in more than 15 years and made many movie and TV projects stop.
One big problem was the use of artificial intelligence (AI). The WGA wanted Hollywood’s studios and producers to limit (限制) the use of AI on creative projects. They wanted AI not to be allowed to write or rewrite material or be used as source material.
Creative AI programs like Chat GPT can now create human-like written works and art. Companies could use these programs instead of people to create scripts (剧本) for movies and TV shows in the future. The WGA was worried that AI could be used to create scripts based on writer’s previous works.
Another problem was pay. Warren Leight, an executive producer (执行制作人), said, “What AI could do is put out a garbled (混乱不清的) piece of work … instead of hiring you to do a first draft, studios hire you to do a second draft, which pays less.” This made writers want to “nip that in the bud”.
AI is already being used widely in other parts of the entertainment industry, such as deaging actors in post-production, said Fortune magazine. Even the WGA and others are open to using AI “less as a creator and more as a tool”, similar to how writers might refer to research material for their work, said tech news website Gizmodo. Still, although AI is not set to replace human writers just yet, the chance could be there in the future.
根据材料内容选择最佳答案。
11. What is the WGA’s opinion on AI?
A. Hollywood should control its use of AI.
B. AI should only be used on creative projects.
C. AI does not help much with creative projects.
D. Many Hollywood workers lose their jobs due to AI.
12. Warren Leight was worried that ________.
A. AI cannot write creative works
B. no writers would work with AI
C. the use of AI may influence writers’ pay
D. AI would create better works than human writers
13. What does the underlined phrase “nip that in the bud” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. not care about it at all
B. stop it from happening
C. be happy to see the use of AI
D. find it possible to live with AI
14. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. AI has been used in entertainment.
B. AI is not set to replace human writers.
C. AI will possibly replace all human jobs.
D AI works as a helpful tool for writers.
15. In which part of a newspaper can you read the text?
