The little piggy cheered up its friend
Pigs aren't always nice to each other. Just like people, they sometimes fight. Also like people, when another pig sees a fight, it can do something to help. On a farm in Italy, scientists watched pigs closely. They saw that sometimes a pig would start shoving(猛推) or biting another pig. But if a third pig came over to the attacker(袭击者), the attacker was less violent(暴力的).
Kitty is listening (maybe)
Do cats ignore(忽视) us? Or do they listen when their owners talk? Recently, scientists did an experiment to find out. They went to the homes of people with cats. They played recordings of the cats' owners speaking, or of strangers speaking. In some of the recordings, people were talking to other adults. In other recordings, they were talking to cats.
When the researchers played a recording of a cat's owner talking, the cat's ears stood up. Sometimes they stopped what they were doing or turned to look at the speaker. But when strangers spoke, the cats ignored them.
Plant makes “unreal” poop
Dung beetles(屎壳郎) have a dirty job. They collect animal's poop, make it into balls, and roll it away to bury it. They use the dung for food and to lay eggs in. One plant in South Africa has a trick to fool the hardworking dung beetles. It makes seeds(种子) that look like antelope(羚羊) poop.
The plant is called Ceratocaryum argenteum. Its seeds are round and brown. When dung beetles roll them away, they help spread the plant's seeds. But the seeds don't do any good for the beetles so, to the bugs, it's a pretty dirty trick.
44.What happens when another pig gets close to two pigs that are fighting?
A.The fight gets more violent.
B.Nothing changes in the fight.
C.The third pig helps the attacker to win faster.
D.The pig that started the fight becomes less violent.
45.What do cats do when they hear a stranger's voice from a recording?
A.The cats keep doing their own thing and ignore it.
B.The cats get upset or scared when they hear the voice.
C.The cats lift their ears and sometimes look towards the sound.
D.The cats stop doing what they are doing and go to the speaker.
46.What is the relationship between the Ceratocaryum argenteum plant and dung beetles?
A.The plant produces poop that beetles like most.
B.The plant provides food and a place for the beetles to lay their eggs in.
C.The beetles feed on the seeds of the Ceratocaryum argenteum plant.
D.The beetles help spread the plant's seeds by mistaking them for antelope poop.
47.What is this passage most likely taken from?
A.A travel magazine for visitors.
B.A story magazine for teenagers.
C.A business journal for adults.
D.A science magazine for kids.

This year, my friend Mareya and I decided to be “resolution partners” and write our resolutions together. We made a list of things each of us would do every single day:
“Of course, we'll have to set our alarms an hour earlier to manage to finish everything in the day,” said Mareya.
The next morning, when I walked into the kitchen at 5:45, my dad was so surprised to see me. I handed him the list, “From now on, I'm waking up early.”
“There is a lot to do every day,” he said, as he looked over the list.
“I already did resolution number 1,” I said, showing off my braids(发辫). “Now I'm making cookies before school for the second resolution.” When I arrived at school, Mareya enjoyed my cookies so much.
“What are you two eating?” Tyrone asked when lunch time came.
“I have an egg, spinach(菠菜), orange, and an onion sandwich,” I answered. “And I have a tuna, broccoli, tomato, and a banana wrap,” said Mareya.
“Do those things actually taste good?” Miguel asked.
Mareya took the list out of her pocket and explained, “Resolution number 3 says our lunch has to be healthy, not necessarily delicious.”
“Speaking of resolutions,” I said to Mareya, “if we're still going to finish number 4 before the bell rings, we'd better hurry.” Luckily, we managed to read our chapters. Unluckily, we both had lots of homework in the afternoon, so we didn't have time to do something big to help the planet.
“Well,” said Mareya, “I guess if we're going to have time for everything on our list, we're going to have to wake up even earlier.” “Earlier?!” I shouted. “I can hardly stay awake now.”
But I couldn't let my resolution partner down, so we agreed to set our alarms half an hour earlier. Even with much more time, though, it was hard to finish everything. When we had to discuss our book reports, we were sleepy the whole way through. By Friday, we were so exhausted.
That afternoon, Mareya and I decided to make up a whole NEW New Year's resolution list. It was shorter, simpler, and, best of all, doable:
Of course, we still like to make foods and try new hairstyles, but not every day. And we are still hoping to do something big to help the planet, but that will take more planning.
So here's my one resolution tip: ▲ !

③Eat a superhealthy lunch.
④Do something big to help the planet.
⑤Read a chapter in a book.
A.③④①②⑤ B.②①③⑤④
C.③②④①⑤ D.②③⑤④①
49.Why did the writer and Mareya make a new resolution list on Friday?
A.They still wanted to wake up early every day.
B.They wanted to have more time for homework.
C.They realized they were not good at keeping resolutions.
D.They found it hard to complete everything on their first list in one day.
50.Which of the following should be put in the ▲ ?
A.keep it simple B.leave it alone
C.make it big D.put it away
51.What is the best title for the passage?
A.My best resolution partner B.Let's redo our resolution
C.It's a wonderful resolution day D.Why not join in our resolution

In ancient China, people called a man of great virtue(美德) a gentleman. In the world of flowers, plum blossoms, orchids, bamboo and chrysanthemums are known as “the Four Gentlemen” in China because these plants' natural characters have something in common with human virtues. They have all long been common subjects in ancient Chinese art forms such as poems and paintings.
“________________ ”
The plum tree is famous for blossoming(开花) in the dead of winter. Its nice smell fills the air at one of the coldest times of a year, making it difficult to go unnoticed. It stands for inner beauty and fearlessness under hard conditions. Painting plum blossoms was popular in the Northern Song dynasty.
“________________ ”
Growing in deep mountain valleys and blooming alone, the orchid is well known for its refreshing smell and it's believed to be elegant(高雅的) but humble(谦卑的). Therefore, orchids stand for elegance in Chinese people's eyes.
“________________ ”
The bamboo grows up straight and it is difficult to break, so it stands for those gentlemen who are upright(正直的) and positive. The inside of the bamboo is empty, which means being modest(谦虚的) in Chinese culture. It was admired by many ancient poets and painters. The famous poet Su Shi once wrote down “I'd rather eat without meat than live without bamboo” in his poem to show his deep love for bamboo.
“________________ ”
Planted as early as three thousand years ago, the chrysanthemum is a traditional flower loved by Chinese people. When nearly all the flowers fall, the chrysanthemum blooms in the cold autumn air and foretells the coming of winter. It stands for the virtue to stand up to all difficulties.

—Do you know what holiday falls on November 19th?
—World Toilet Day, of course!
①Have you thanked your toilet today? Maybe take a moment to thank this useful invention. Unfortunately, many people around the world do not have good toilets. World Toilet Day started in 2001 to draw attention to the problem. Since then, inventors around the world have been working hard on designs for better toilets. The goal is clean toilets for all.
②Why do so many people live without good toilets? One problem is water shortage. Traditional toilets use water to flush(冲) the waste away. But lots of places don't have enough water. And if there's no sewer system(下水道) or water treatment plant, the flushes might go into rivers or onto fields. For almost half of the world's population, flush toilets are just not practical. As a result, there are always different kinds of toilets that do not need to be flushed.
③Composting toilets might be a good choice. They do not need water, so they're good for areas that are dry or don't have sewer systems.
④Haiti's EkoLakay toilets look like a normal toilet. When you use one, wastes fall into different containers. Some plant parts, like peanut shells or shredded sugar cane stalks are added instead of flushing water. This stops smells efficiently.
⑤A pit toilet is the oldest and most basic toilet, which is just a hole in the ground, maybe with an outhouse over it. This is simple, but not very clean. Germs(细菌) can escape into the air and get into water. But replacing the pit with a septic tank(化粪池) is a big improvement. Septic pits are lined with plastic or clay to stop germs.
⑥Tiger toilets get help from an unexpected partner—a kind of worms(蠕虫) on the earth known as tiger worms. These worms love to eat the wastes. Under a tiger toilet is a box with a screen in the middle. Solid(固体) waste stays in the top of the box, where the worms live. Liquid(液体) flows through small holes into sewer systems. Tiger toilets are simple to build. They are recently being tested in India and are proving quite popular.
⑦Educational ways have also played an important role in changing public attitudes towards good toilets. Schools and community programs are teaching people about the importance of them, encouraging behavior changes.
⑧The road to achieving worldwide good toilets is still long. On this World Toilet Day, let us continue to thank the convenience of the wonderful invention. By doing research on more efficient toilet technologies and raising senses of keeping clean surroundings, we can work towards a future where every person has a clean and safe toilet.

C.They are just allholes in the ground with outhouses.
D.They use a special kind of worms for wastes.
58.What's the author's attitude towards the future of good toilets?

Ⅵ.任务型阅读。(6567小题,每小题2分,68小题3分,共9分)
There is a class debate(辩论) about energy next Thursday. I will take part, but first I need to plan and study. We don't know which side we will be on until the day before. This means we have to prepare to speak for both sides. First of all, I can make a list of energy sources(能源) with its advantages and disadvantages. So it's time for me to collect information and data for the debate.
For example, we might have to talk about gasoline(汽油) as an energy source. If so, one group would use the information in a science book to say it is made from oil, a fossil fuel(化石燃料). Fossil fuels are made from the remains(遗骸) of ancient plants and animals. They formed millions of years ago. However, the other group can argue about a big problem with using fossil fuels—we are using them much faster than it takes for them to form. The argument may come from an interview of a group of scientists who predict that we will run out of fossil fuels in 50 years.
Another source we might need to debate about is wind energy. One group would say that it is a renewable energy source. This is because wind will never run out and it is free. We can interview some experts to get more helpful information. For example, some Chinese experts have said that a large wind turbine(风力涡轮) can make enough energy to power a city. Another benefit is that it does not harm the environment. But the group against using wind energy can use more scientific data on the Internet to argue that it is not as efficient(高效的) as other sources. A scientific website shows that less than half of the wind collected can be changed into electricity. Also, building wind turbines everywhere will cost 600 billion dollars, according to TV news.
We now use more energy than we did in the past. ________ The debate will be hard, but I know I will be ready, not only for the debate itself, but also for the future energy challenge!

from Lei Feng and help others, but I didn’t know the real meaning of the spirit of Lei Feng. Now I
deeply understand helping others makes me happy.”
Do you know Lei Feng? He is one of the most famous soldiers in Chinese history. He lost his
parents when he was very young and his neighbors brought him up. Although he died in an
accident at 22, he did many good things in his short life. For example, he gave his own money to
the parents of another soldier. And he bought tickets for a woman he didn’t know. He also helped
an old man to send letters to his son.
Today, more than 50 years has passed since Lei Feng’s death. Some people say that the spirit of

and make it a habit.
