Twenty years ago, almost every family bought at least one newspaper every day. Some people had two or three different newspapers every day. But why did people read newspapers?
Five hundred years ago, news of important events—battles, kings or rulers (统治者) overthrown (推翻) or killed—took months or years to travel from one country to another. It passed by word of mouth. With newspapers, people could read about important things in faraway countries soon after they happened.
Besides news from all over the world, newspapers gave a lot of other useful information. There were weather reports and guides for watching TV and film. There were also book reviews, stories, and of course, advertisements (广告). Advertisers paid the newspapers a large number of dollars for space on each page. 【答案】例文
The Changes in My Hometown
Great changes have taken place in my hometown over the years. In the past, people lived a poor life. The houses were small and old, and pollution was serious—rubbish was everywhere. It was also difficult to travel to other places, so few tourists came here.
Now, everything has changed. People live in large and bright houses, and many even own cars. The environment is getting better: streets are cleaner, and trees and flowers can be seen everywhere. Thousands of tourists visit my hometown every year to enjoy its beauty.
I hope my hometown will develop faster in the future. More high-tech factories can be built to create jobs, while keeping the environment green. I believe it will become a modern and charming city, attracting more visitors and bringing more happiness to the people here.

Later, her aunt wanted to work in other places. Heidi’s grandfather lived in the Alps. She had to go there and turn to Heidi’s grandfather. Heidi’s grandfather was eccentric. He never talked to others and disagreed with the villagers. He lived alone in the wooden house in the mountain area. At first, Heidi’s grandpa didn’t want to accept her. One day, Heidi found her grandpa’s deep feelings. The old and the young depended on each other. Heidi was very happy to live with her grandpa. Heidi received the love of the villagers because of her loveliness and kindness. At that time, she also made friends with Peter. They played among the mountains and the green fields.
For those who made newspapers, advertisements were also very important. Money from advertisements made profits (利益) for publishers (发行人) and helped keep prices low for readers.
