B As an artist working at Cambridge University Botanic Garden, I am leading a special 14-month project called DYE. My mission is to discover plant-based dyes (染料) and share them with visitors, researchers and artists through events, performances, a colour database and projects linked to the Garden’s plant collections. There are some 8,000 plant species in the Garden. Guided by medieval recipes, I experiment with berries, flowers, and bark (树皮) to uncover colours hidden in nature. For example, I’ve transformed roses into vivid red dyes and turned Jade Vine into pink paint. One of my proudest achievements is creating “Newton’s Gold” — a golden-yellow ink made from the bark of Isaac Newton’s historic apple tree. I thought I’d end up with black but it’s a dark golden yellow — unlike modern methods that chemically force predictable results. These discoveries remind me that nature holds endless surprises, but they demand patience and respect. My work isn’t just about mixing colours — it’s about storytelling. Collaborations with historians and dancers connect my dyes to broader themes. I dyed feathers for historians to study ancient costumes and created fabrics reflecting nature’s cycles for a dance performance. By reviving forgotten techniques, such as a 15th-century ink recipe, I bridge the past and present, showing how ancient methods can inspire sustainable solutions to today’s environmental issues. Nature’s colours are ever-changing. The fading of dyes reveals the temporary beauty of natural materials, just as ecosystems’ delicate balance which demands protection. In the Botanic Garden, colours from plants and everyday materials teach me to accept change. These colours aren’t just art supplies; they symbolize nature’s strength and remind us to rethink our relationship with the environment. Through workshops and a colour database, I invite people to view nature differently. My work is a return to the old ways of making colour from my garden herbs, establishing a deeper connection between art and nature. 4. What does the author do on the DYE project? A. Organize and guide garden tours. B. Collect and classify plant species. C. Design and run a database of artworks. D. Develop and spread plant-based dyes. 5 Why is “Newton’s Gold” ink significant? A. It honors Newton’s great contributions. B. It shows nature’s unpredictable potentials. C. It links apple trees to scientific inspirations. D. It exposes limitations of modern ink production. 6. What does the underlined word “reviving” mean in paragraph 3? A. Bringing back. B. Putting away. C. Searching for. D. Reflecting on. 7. What is the ultimate goal of the DYE project? A. To improve natural dye stability. B. To protect nature’s ecological balance. C. To strengthen sustainable art-nature bonds. D. To bridge nature and art through gardening. C Numerous industries produce larger quantities of wastewaters containing high concentrations of organic substances and inorganic salts. Discharging these wastewaters to the environment is harmful to ecosystem and human health. However, the high salt content in these wastewaters pose serious challenges for existing treatment processes. Researchers at Rice University, in partnership with Guangdong University of Technology, have developed a groundbreaking method for it — adopting dialysis (透析) technology commonly used in medicine. The researchers selected commercial ultrafiltration membranes (超滤膜) which were designed to let salt pass through while trapping organic substances. They set up a system where salty wastewater and fresh water flowed in opposite directions on either side of a special membrane, without needing pumps. Due to the difference of salt concentrations between waste water and fresh water, salt naturally moves into the fresh water while organic substances are kept back. To test this, they compared the amount of organic material and salt in the waste water before and after treatment. The results showed the system could effectively remove salt without using extra amounts of fresh water. One significant advantage of dialysis is its resistance to fouling (积垢). Unlike pressure-driven systems, dialysis experienced notably less buildup of organic materials on the membrane because it doesn’t rely on extra pressure. “This could translate to lower energy consumption, less maintenance, and fewer membrane replacements,” said Elimelech, a researcher on the study. Additionally, with suitable membranes, dialysis can be tailored to separate various organics, enabling the selective recovery of valuable resources from the wastewater. In this way, dialysis creates opportunities for transforming wastewater treatment plants into resource recovery factories, aligning the principles of a recycling economy. Overall, while dialysis alone doesn’t fully purify wastewater, it can transform the high-salinity organic wastewater stream into a low-salinity organic wastewater stream that can be readily treated by conventional methods, which revolutionizes the treatment of some of the most challenging industrial wastewaters. 8. What is the major challenge faced by current wastewater treatment? A. The lack of sufficient treatment devices. B. The high salt percentage in wastewaters. C. The substantial volumes of wastewaters. D. The considerable cost of treatment processes. 9. What can be learned about the process of dialysing wastewaters? A. The membrane transformed salt into organics. B. The extra pressure contributed to salt transport. C. The concentration difference played the key role. D. Liquids on both sides flowed in the same direction. 10. What does the underlined word “aligning” in paragraph 4 probably mean? A. Matching. B. Establishing. C. Adjusting. D. Challenging. 11. Which of the following can be a suitable title? A. Dialysis: A Pioneering Blessing for Medicine B. Membranes: A Protective Screen for Fresh Water C. Dialysis: A New Pathway for Wastewater Treatment D. High-Salinity Wastewater: A Threat to the Environment. D In health research, determining true causes — like whether drinking wine affects health — is vital for informed decisions. But “correlation does not equal causation (因果关系)” is widely recognized. Then how do researchers move beyond correlations to find answers? Correlations often exist without implying causation. For instance, chocolate consumption correlates with the number of Nobel Prize winners in some countries. Does eating chocolate boost Nobel wins? No. This correlation likely exists because chocolate consumption serves as a proxy for wealth. In turn, wealth relates to education and research funding — key factors behind Nobel achievements. So, just finding a link isn’t enough. Scientists need more strong evidence to establish causation. Unlike highly controlled chemistry or physics experiments, which can easily show how X affects Y, human biology often relies on indirect evidence. It requires “inductive reasoning” —drawing general conclusions from available evidence. It’s like how a prosecutor (检察官) builds a criminal case using circumstantial evidence. While individual pieces might not be persuasive, their build-up strengthens the case. There’s one interesting contrast, however. . In criminal cases, the standard of proof is “beyond reasonable doubt”, but science demands proof based “on the balance of probabilities”. This reflects scientists’ willingness to revise their beliefs when better evidence emerges. Indirect evidence is crucial for inferring causation, but it is not always conclusive. The gold standard for direct evidence of causation is the randomised controlled trial (RCT), where participants are randomly assigned to either receive an intervention or to be a “control”. This ensures if you see a difference between the two groups, this can only be due to the effect of the intervention, which effectively proves causation. Unfortunately, ethical (道德的) considerations often prevent us conducting RCTs. For instance, we lack RCT evidence that smoking causes lung cancer because the indirect evidence is so strong that such studies would be unethical. Causation in health doesn’t work in a simple way. Factors like lifestyle, genes, and environment interact to determine disease risk. Achieving perfect health requires a variety of actions, as no single habit, superfood, or magic pill is the answer. 12. What does the underlined word “proxy” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Replacement. B. Condition. C. Indicator. D. Preference. 13. How do scientists’ inferences differ from prosecutors’ conclusions? A. They remain open to update. B. They guarantee absolute certainty. C. They rely largely on indirect evidence. D. They require higher standard of proof. 14. Why is RCT considered the gold standard for establishing causation? A. It offers wide application. B. It ensures fair assignment. C. It avoids ethical considerations. D. It identifies intervention effects. 15. What is the author’s suggestion for health improvement? A. Counting on good habits. B. Integrating multiple strategies. C. Taking a cure-all pill. D. Leading an active lifestyle. I’ve always disliked getting up in winter. It connected me to my roots, as my father and grandfather had all graduated from here. So, when our teacher Mr. Dow announced a group project to create a brochure (小册子) about our school for its 100th anniversary, I was thrilled. The best three brochures would be displayed in the school library, which was a chance to show the new students how wonderful our school was. I was paired with two classmates: Jake. who loved photography, and Lily who had a gift for writing. Working with others could be fun, right? But my enthusiasm quickly faded. Our first meeting was a disaster. When we discussed which part of the school we should focus on Jake kept talking about cameras and photos. I turned to Lily, hoping for some support. But she simply shrugged and said, “I’m not really into this. It sounds boring.” Jake nodded in agreement. The project seemed to be harder than I thought. At our next meeting, I tried to lead the conversation back to the project. I shared some interesting facts I had researched about the school. However, neither of them seemed interested. Jake had promised to gather materials from the library, but instead he showed us photos taken on the weekend. Lily hadn’t started her part of the research either, claiming she had been too busy. I felt like I was the only one who cared. Back home, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I stayed up late that night, trying to create the brochure by myself. But no matter how hard I tried, the result was far from satisfactory. I was exhausted and disheartened. My mom noticed I was upset. “You can’t do this alone,” she gently reminded me. “Jake and Lily have talents that can make this project shine. You just need to find a way to get them involved.” With only three days left, I knew I had to act. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ On the final day, we presented our brochure in class. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 绝密★启用前 2025年衡水市第二中学高考强化模拟试题(三) 英语 本试卷共8页。 How much is the shirt? 5. Why is “Newton’s Gold” ink significant? D 5. B 6. A 7. 根据第一段中“My mission is to discover plant-based dyes (染料) and share them with visitors, researchers and artists through events, performances, a colour database and projects linked to the Garden’s plant collections. (我的任务是发现植物染料,并通过活动、表演、一个颜色数据库以及与植物园植物收藏相关的项目,与游客、研究人员和艺术家分享这些染料。)”可知,作者在DYE项目中开发并传播基于植物的染料。故选D。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中“One of my proudest achievements is creating “Newton’s Gold” — a golden-yellow ink made from the bark of Isaac Newton’s historic apple tree. I thought I’d end up with black but it’s a dark golden yellow — unlike modern methods that chemically force predictable results. These discoveries remind me that nature holds endless surprises, but they demand patience and respect. 根据第三段中“By reviving forgotten techniques, such as a 15th-century ink recipe, I bridge the past and present, showing how ancient methods can inspire sustainable solutions to today’s environmental issues. (通过reviving那些被遗忘的技艺,比如一种15世纪的墨水制作配方,我架起了连接过去与现在的桥梁,展示了古老的方法是如何能够为当今的环境问题带来可持续的解决方案的。)”可知,作者通过“恢复”被遗忘的技术,连接过去和现在,所以reviving意思是“恢复,使……重新流行”,与Bringing back意思相近。故选A。 根据最后一段中“Through workshops and a colour database, I invite people to view nature differently. My work is a return to the old ways of making colour from my garden herbs, establishing a deeper connection between art and nature. (通过工作室和一个颜色数据库,我邀请人们以不同的方式看待自然。我的工作是回归到用我花园里的药草制作颜色的古老方式,在艺术和自然之间建立更深刻的联系。)”可推断,DYE项目的最终目标是加强可持续的艺术与自然的联系。故选C。 C Numerous industries produce larger quantities of wastewaters containing high concentrations of organic substances and inorganic salts. B 9. C 10. A 11. 根据第一段“However, the high salt content in these wastewaters pose serious challenges for existing treatment processes. (然而,这些废水中的高盐含量给现有的处理工艺带来了严重的挑战。)” 可知,当前废水处理面临的主要挑战是废水中的高盐含量。故选B。 【9题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段“They set up a system where salty wastewater and fresh water flowed in opposite directions on either side of a special membrane, without needing pumps. Due to the difference of salt concentrations between waste water and fresh water, salt naturally moves into the fresh water while organic substances are kept back. (他们建立了一个系统,在这个系统中,含盐废水和淡水在一个特殊的膜的两侧以相反的方向流动,不需要泵。由于废水和淡水之间盐浓度的差异,盐自然地移动到淡水中,而有机物则被保留下来。)” 可知,在处理废水的透析过程中,浓度差起到了关键作用。故选C。 【10题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第四段 “Additionally, with suitable membranes, dialysis can be tailored to separate various organics, enabling the selective recovery of valuable resources from the wastewater. In this way, dialysis creates opportunities for transforming wastewater treatment plants into resource recovery factories, aligning the principles of a recycling economy. (此外,使用合适的膜,透析可以定制以分离各种有机物,能够从废水中选择性地回收有价值的资源。通过这种方式,透析为将废水处理厂转变为资源回收工厂创造了机会,与循环经济的原则aligning。)” 可知,透析为将废水处理厂转变为资源回收工厂创造了机会,这与循环经济的原则是一致的,所以“aligning” 意思最接近 “Matching(匹配,相一致)”。故选A。 根据第一段“Researchers at Rice University, in partnership with Guangdong University of Technology, have developed a groundbreaking method for it — adopting dialysis (透析) technology commonly used in medicine. (莱斯大学的研究人员与广东工业大学合作,开发了一种开创性的方法 —— 采用医学上常用的透析。)” 以及后文对该方法的介绍可知,本文主要讲的是透析技术为废水处理提供了一条新途径。所以最佳标题为“透析:污水处理的新途径”。故选C。 D In health research, determining true causes — like whether drinking wine affects health — is vital for informed decisions. A It offers wide application. B. It ensures fair assignment. C. It avoids ethical considerations. D. It identifies intervention effects. 15. What is the author’s suggestion for health improvement? A Counting on good habits. B. Integrating multiple strategies. C. Taking a cure-all pill. D. Leading an active lifestyle. C 13. A 14. D 15. 根据前文“Correlations often exist without implying causation. For instance, chocolate consumption correlates with the number of Nobel Prize winners in some countries.(相关性常常存在,但并不意味着因果关系。例如,在一些国家,巧克力的消费量与诺贝尔奖获得者的数量有关)”以及后文“In turn, wealth relates to education and research funding — key factors behind Nobel achievements.(反过来,财富与教育和研究经费有关——这是诺贝尔奖成就背后的关键因素)”可知,讨论巧克力和诺贝尔奖的联系,所以前句应是“巧克力消费是财富的指标”之意,推知proxy意为“指标”和C项意思相近。故选C项。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“There’s one interesting contrast, however. In criminal cases, the standard of proof is “beyond reasonable doubt”, but science demands proof based “on the balance of probabilities”. This reflects scientists’ willingness to revise their beliefs when better evidence emerges.(然而,有一个有趣的对比。在刑事案件中,证明标准是“排除合理怀疑”,但科学要求证明基于“可能性平衡”。这反映了科学家在出现更好的证据时愿意修正自己的观点。)”可知,科学家的推断与检察官的结论不同之处在于,科学家愿意在出现更好的证据时修正自己的观点,即他们的推断是开放的、可以更新的。故选A项。 根据第四段“The gold standard for direct evidence of causation is the randomised controlled trial (RCT), where participants are randomly assigned to either receive an intervention or to be a “control”. This ensures if you see a difference between the two groups, this can only be due to the effect of the intervention, which effectively proves causation.(因果关系直接证据的金标准是随机对照试验(RCT),参与者被随机分配到接受干预组或“对照组”。这就确保了如果你看到两组之间的差异,这只能是由于干预的效果,从而有效地证明了因果关系。)''可知,RCT被认为是确定因果关系的金标准是因为它确定了干预措施的效果,从而有效地证明了因果关系。故选D项。 15题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Causation in health doesn’t work in a simple way. Factors like lifestyle, genes, and environment interact to determine disease risk. Achieving perfect health requires a variety of actions, as no single habit, superfood, or magic pill is the answer.(健康的因果关系并不简单。生活方式、基因和环境等因素相互作用决定疾病风险。达到完美的健康需要各种各样的行动,因为没有单一的习惯,超级食物或神奇药丸是答案。)”可知,作者建议要整合多种策略来改善健康。故选B项。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 I’ve always disliked getting up in winter. When we discussed which part of the school we should focus on, Jake kept talking about cameras and photos. You just need to find a way to get them involved.” 注意: 1.续写词数为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 With only three days left, I knew I had to act. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ On the final day, we presented our brochure in class. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】With only three days left, I knew I had to act. After brainstorming some ideas, I invited Jake and Lily to my house. Opening my grandfather’s diary, I pointed at the faded photo of his class. “Your camera can save the moment for the future,” I told Jake, whose eyes suddenly sparkled. Then I suggested he photograph every corner of the school like “time travelers”. Meanwhile, Lily was engaged in my grandfather’s love letter, eager to bring hidden stories back to life. I was busy organizing layouts, combining historical accuracy with creativity. The clock was ticking, but our laughter replaced earlier frustration. (94词) On the final day, we presented our brochure in class. We stood by the blackboard as everyone went through the pages. They examined the brochure carefully, with their fingers tracing the photos, narratives and timelines which connected three generations of graduates. Noticing surprise on every face, we couldn’t wait to hear Mr. Dow’s announcement of the winner. “This work isn’t just about the school anniversary,” he finally said, tapping the cover where our three names shone, “it’s about how its spirit lives through students’ cooperation.” That afternoon in the library, seeing our brochure on display, we realized our combined talents had created what none could alone.
