Micro-skills of continuation writing Verbs “draw” pictures 以动词构建画面 Adapted from “Adversity and Courage” (Unit 4/the 3rd Optional Coursebook ) In continuation writing What should we pay attention to while writing stories? Activity 1 So many verbs here! Read the article Never had I thought this great expedition(探险) with Sir Ernest Shackleton to travel across the Antarctic would end up in failure. Our ship, Endurance, was stuck in ice and months later, was crushed by the ice around. Before we abandoned the ship, Shackleton told us to rescue our most essential supplies—the small boats, our food, the cook stove, candles, clothes and blankets. None of us took away our personal belongings, except a banjo(班卓琴) usually used for parties and celebrations. After months of struggle, we finally arrived at Elephant Island, but things went from bad to worse. Having assessed the situation, Shackleton decided to leave us to find help on South Georgia Island-this voyage was too dangerous and difficult for all of us to make it in our small boats. So twenty-two sailors, including me, watched as Shackleton and his boat sailed away, believing he would return to save us. Holding hands together, we all walked back to our temporary camp, promising to work together. A possible version Staying alive was never easy, but staying positive seemed much more difficult. Every time we thought of our uncertain future, we sighed deeply and covered our faces with hands. To cheer us up, one of the sailors always played the banjo when we sat around the fire and recalled the past. If one of us felt down, others would comfort him with gentle words and encourage him to cheer up. The waiting process was really painful, but luckily, we persevered in staying alive. When we were finally rescued, we felt such relief and joy that all of us jumped up and screamed excitedly. Despite difficulties, optimism and teamwork carried us through the toughest times.
