【原文】W: I think the third flat is the best we’ve seen so far. They’re all quite expensive. Rents seem to be getting higher and higher. But this one is the least expensive and it’s the nearest to the city center.
M: But it’s the one with the fewest rooms and the least space. I’m not sure whether it’s got enough space for us, especially with our kids.
W: So you prefer the second one in a worse location with higher rent?
M: The location isn’t as bad as you think. It’s farther from the center than the other two, but you can get to the rain station and the kids’ school more easily. Most importantly, it has much more space than the other two flats.
W: Can we afford it? The more we spend on rent, the less we’ll have for other things.
M: Actually, it’s less expensive than it seems because the rent includes all the bills.

Then toward the end of September, the rain came. At first, everyone was so pleased because the rain brought cooler temperatures. But then, it just kept raining and raining. It rained an entire week. Streams started flooding and roaring out of the mountains. The stream that went through my college campus flooded several resident buildings. Even though there was a lot of damage to the campus and the surrounding areas, there was a bright side. Students on the athletic teams served lunch to the flood victims in the community. Other students donated their clothes, shoes, and books to those who had lost their belongings. So even though the flooding was extremely severe, the supportive college community there made the experience unforgettable for me.

In the Chinese film Ne Zha 2, many treasures of ancient cultural relics are brought to life. Let’s take a closer look at these cultural elements and the real-life prototypes (原型) that inspired them.
Seven-colored lotus
In Ne Zha 2, the seven-colored lotus (莲花) plays a critical role in reconstructing the bodies of the heroes, Ne Zha and Ao Bing. This concept is inspired by the Boshan censer (香炉), a2,000-year-old bronze burner housed at the Hebei Museum.
Barrier beasts
If you’ve seen both Ne Zha films, you’re sure to remember the lovely and charming barrier beasts—funny creatures that serve as guardians. These creatures bear a striking similarity to ancient relics from the Sanxingdui culture.
Tianyuan tripod
The Tianyuan tripod in the film is a key tool in the Jade Xu Palace. Its design draws inspiration from the bronze tripods used during the Shang and Zhou dynasties. The tripod was a symbol of power and status in ancient China, often used in ceremonies.
Jade Xu Palace
When Ne Zha travels to the Jade Xu Palace, a group of birds fly in the sky, with two of them landing on the palace roof. This scene is inspired by the famous painting “Ruihe Tu” by Emperor Huizong of the Song Dynasty, Zhao Ji. Zhao Ji painted this scene on silk, symbolizing his blessing for the country and its people.

The last time I visited my parents, I borrowed a novel from the shelves in my old bedroom. The books there once belonged to me, but over the decades, my father has taken over the space. It’s fitting.
I grew up in a house full of books, free to explore anything, as long as I returned it. But that’s harder now. My parents, in their 80s, still live in Manhattan, while I’m in Los Angeles. The book I grabbed was a novel by S. A. Cosby. At first, I was surprised my father knew of him, but why not? For as long as I can remember, he’s been a regular at his neighborhood bookstore. He used to say he wouldn’t mind aging as long as he could read. Even now, I often find him with a book, though I fear he’s begun to fall out of the narrative (叙述).
I didn’t read the book until I was back in Southern California. I didn’t want my father to know I had the book. I didn’t want him to feel any stress about it, though the two of us have been talking books ever since I was 12. I didn’t want to know what he might or might not recall.
Opening it felt like opening a conversation with my father, retracing his steps and reading through his eyes. I enjoyed the novel, though that’s beside the point. What struck me most was a plotline about feeling sad for one’s parents, a process I’m beginning to understand. When I finished, I ran my fingers over my father’s mark on the cover, those letters he’d pressed into the cover with a hand-held metal press, spelling out a name the same as mine. Then I slipped the book into my suitcase, certain to return it next time I visit.
24. Why is it fitting for the father to take over the author’s old space?
A. Because both are attached to reading.
B. Because the father loves collecting books.
C. Because the author’s books are preserved there.
D. Because the father needs space for bookshelves.
25. Why did the author not want his father to know he had the book?
A. To put the book into his own collection.
B. To avoid pressure on his father to discuss it.
C. To free his father from too much reading.
D. To maintain a sense of privacy in reading.
26. How did the author feel while reading Cosby’s novel?
A. Inspired by the plotline. B. Connected to his father.
C. Eager to share with others. D. Surprised at his father’s mark.
27. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Returning Home B. Love through Pages
C. The Power of Books D. My Father, a Great Reader
【答案】24. A 25. B 26. B 27. B

Even now, I often find him with a book, though I fear he’s begun to fall out of the narrative (叙述). 故选A项。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“I didn’t want my father to know I had the book. I didn’t want him to feel any stress about it, though the two of us have been talking books ever since I was 12. I didn’t want to know what he might or might not recall. (我不想让父亲知道我拿了这本书。我不想让他因此感到任何压力,尽管我们俩从我12岁起就一直在讨论书籍。我也不想知道他可能记得或可能不记得的内容)”可知,作者这样做事希望避免让父亲感到需要讨论这本书的压力。故选B项。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Opening it felt like opening a conversation with my father, retracing his steps and reading through his eyes.

When Clark Hoefnagels’ grandmother was scammed (欺诈) out of $27,000 last year, he felt it necessary to take action. As part of his efforts, Mr Hoefnagels ran the scam emails his grandmother had received through popular AI chatbot ChatGPT. He was curious to see if it would recognize them as fraudulent (欺骗的), and it immediately did so.
Then, an idea occurred to him, which has since grown into a business called Catch. It is an AI system that has been trained to spot scam emails. Currently compatible (兼容的) with Google’s Gmail, Catch checks incoming emails and marks any considered to be fraudulent, or potentially so.
Al tools such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini, can produce new content. Originally, this was only a text reply in response to a question or conversation with them. However, they can now create photos and paintings, voice content, or make documents. People from all walks of life and industries are increasingly using such AI to improve their work. Unfortunately so are criminals.
A product called FraudGPT allows criminals to make content to scam others. More worrying is the use of voice cloning, which can be used to convince (使相信) a relative that a loved one is in need of money.
The group that is most concerned about being scammed, Mr Hoefnagels says, are older people. Yet rather than taking protective steps, he says that their fears are more often relieved by a very low-tech strategy — their children telling them simply not to answer or reply to anything.
There are some pretty shocking facts about the growing problem of AI scams. Reports of AI tools being used to try to fool banks’ systems increased by 84% in 2022. Given these increased global risks, you’d imagine that Mr Hoefnagels’ Catch product would be popular with members of the public. Mr Hoefnagels says his next step is to find a suitable partner with funding to support and bring it to the market.
28. Why is Clark Hoefnagels’ grandmother mentioned in the first paragraph ?
A. To discuss the huge increase in email scams.
B. To show the inspiration behind the Catch AI system.
C. To stress the Internet challenges faced by the elderly.
D. To prove the value of ChatGPT in recognizing scams.
29. What is the main concern with the development of AI tools ?
A. The risk of AI as a job replacement.
B. Over-dependence on AI for daily tasks.
C. AI-supported misbehaviour during tests.
D. The potential misuse of AI for e-crimes.
30. What can we learn about the elderly from paragraph 5?
A. They are the main target of AI scams.
B. They tend to ignore their children’s advice.
C. They do little to defend themselves.
D. They feel less anxious after being comforted.
31. What can we expect of the Catch product in the future ?
A. It may get high profits.
B. It may reach the public soon.
C. It could perform various functions.
D. It could stand out among other AI tools.
【答案】28. B 29. D 30. C 31. B

Native to southwest China, pandas are famous for their love of bamboo, spending up to 16hours a day consuming this fast-growing plant. Pandas have puzzled biologists for decades with their bamboo-only diet. Despite having digestive systems typical of meat-consuming animals, pandas have adapted to a diet that is almost entirely plant-based.
A recent study published in the journal Frontiers by researchers from China West Normal University demonstrates how this is possible. The study reveals that bamboo contains microRNA (miRNA), a genetic material that pandas absorb into their bloodstream. This miRNA plays a crucial role in regulating gene expression, influencing pandas’ growth, behavior and immune (免疫) responses.
Dr. Li Feng, a senior author of the study, explains in a statement that miRNA also affects pandas’ sense of smell, taste, and dopamine (多巴胺) pathways, all of which are closely linked to their feeding habits. The researchers believe that by the time a baby panda grows up,it will develop the ability to pick the freshest and most nutritious bamboo, which enables them to adapt to a plant-based diet. The research team analyzed blood samples from six pandas, identifying 57 kinds of miRNAs likely coming from bamboo. These findings suggest that miRNA is key to pandas’ adaptation to their unique diet.
The study also highlights the potential broader implications of this discovery. By understanding how plant miRNA affects animals, scientists may be able to develop new treatments or preventive measures for diseases. The panda’s diet consists almost entirely of bamboo leaves, stems and shoots. And only about 1% of their food comes from other plants, according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). This research not only deepens our understanding of pandas but also opens new ways for exploring the interactions between plant and animal biology.
32. What aspect of pandas is focused on in the research?
A. Physical growth. B. Social behavior.
C. Hunting strategies. D. Genetic adaptation.
33. How do pandas adapt to their plant-based diet over time?
A. By learning to select bamboo.
B. By increasing their consumption.
C. By reducing their reliance on plants.
D. By developing stronger digestive systems.
34. What may be the positive impact of the finding in the future?
A. Increasing the panda population.
B. Developing new medical treatments.
C. Changing pandas’ digestive systems.
D. Improving bamboo planting techniques.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards the outcome of the study?
A. Curious. B. Critical. C. Optimistic. D. Doubtful.

How to Finally Stick with a Fitness Habit
Have you committed to a new habit — exercising, let’s say — but keep falling off the wagon? Do you give up when the going gets tough? You may have low self-efficacy (自我效能) . ____36____ Here are some of the ways that psychologists say we can build self-efficacy:
Congratulate yourself for small wins
Past successes are fuel for future success. This applies to tiny things like habits: ____37____ It also applies to bigger projects. When you did a beginner running program and “graduated” by running a 5K race, that’s huge. You learned that you can run farther than you ever thought you could. You learned what that finish-line glow of accomplishment really feels like. ____38____
Watch people doing the thing you want to do
The second-best thing to practice self-efficacy is to indirectly experience others’ success. For some people, looking up to a world-class athlete can inspire them in the gym. ____39____ When your buddy hits a new dead lift record, you’ll cheer for them, right? Even though you weren’t the person walking up to the bar, you’ve still experienced a taste the whole rollercoaster of emotions from being nervous at the attempt to celebrating the success.
____40____
When you’re trying to stay on a path it helps to know where that path leads. What will it look like to make it to your goal? Try to imagine scenarios where you’re trying to do the thing and you momentarily can’t. It will help to think them through ahead of time and plan out how you will handle them. Then, when the time comes, you won’t hesitate to execute your plan.
A Set realistic goals
B. Visualize success (and failure)
C. Don’t skip the gym on the first day, or it’s harder to start the habit later.
D. But don’t worry: Self-efficacy is something that you can build with practice.
E. If you managed to make it to the gym once, it’s a lot easier to show up on day two.
F. And you can harness (利用) all of that, all over again, when you start working on a new goal.
G. For others, it can be helpful to look at somebody who is closer to you in skill level or experience.

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“How did tryouts go, Wendy?” Mom asked. “Terrible,” I said. “Kristie got Cinderella’s part!” “What part did you get?” “None,” I whispered. I ran to my room and started drawing in my sketchbook. Drawing always makes me feel better.
The next day, Kristi e was excited. But when the last bell rang, her mood changed. “I’m nervous, Wendy,” she said. “Will you come to rehearsal(排练)?” I wanted to say no, but when faced with my best friend, the words that came out were, “Okay — but only today.”
In the auditorium(礼堂), Ms. Carson handed out copies of the script(剧本)to the cast. I sat in the third row, wishing I were in my room drawing. Ms. Carson pulled a cardboard castle onto the middle of the stage. It was brown with small windows and doors. Ms. Carson turned on the music, and Kristie and the Prince started dancing. I had to admit, Kristie was really good. Ms. Carson hit a metal triangle with a little stick 12 times. Kristi e ran off the stage and dropped her left shoe. The curtain came down. “Thanks, everyone,” said Ms. Carson. “We’ll go through the rest tomorrow.”
“When will we get the real sets?” Kristie pointed to the cardboard castle. “These are the real sets,” Ms. Carson said. “We don’t have an art teacher this year. So that’s the best we could do.”
I thought for a moment. “Maybe there’s something we can do.”
I spent that evening drawing. In the morning, I stuck my sketchbook into my backpack and ran to the bus.
The day dragged. Finally, the last bell rang. “Thanks for yesterday,” Kristie said. “See you tomorrow.” “I’m not going home yet,” I said. “I have something to show Ms. Carson.”
After Ms. Carson saw my ideas, she talked to some other teachers. They liked my ideas too.
Over the next week, a corner of the lunchroom was filled with cardboard and paints. And lots of kids joined my work.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
Para. 1: Finally, opening night arrived.

Para. 2: Then Ms. Carson called me up to the stage.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Finally, opening night arrived. When the curtain rose, the auditorium buzzed with amazement. In front of them were a magical land with rolling hills, a fancy carriage, and a glittering castle. Kristie, radiant in her Cinderella gown, glanced at me with a grateful smile mid-scene. She was a wonderful Cinderella. As the clock struck midnight — marked by Ms. Carson’s twelve crisp triangle chimes — Kristie fled, leaving the glittering shoe on the center of the stage. Thunderous applause erupted, and my eyes stung with pride.
Then Ms. Carson called me up to the stage. Confused, I stepped forward as the cast parted. “This production’s heart wasn’t just onstage,” she announced, holding up my sketchbook. “Wendy and her team brought our world to life.” The audience cheered as Kristie thrust a bouquet into my hands — paper flowers crafted from painted rehearsal scripts. Standing there, I was bathed in spotlights I’d never imagined earning. Everyone clapped. For me! I did get a part in the play after all. And it was just as good as being Cinderella.

The location isn't as bad as you think it's farther from the center than the other two, but you can get to the train station and the kid's school more easily. Most importantly, IT is much more space than the other two flats. Can we afford IT? The more we spend on rent, the less will have for other things. Actually, it's less expensive than IT seems because the rent includes all the bills. I think the third flat is the best we've seen so far.
21. What aspect of Ne Zha 2 is introduced in the text?
A. Its plot. B. Its cultural sources.
C. Its popularity. D. Its creative techniques.
22. What do we know about the barrier beasts in Ne Zha 2?
A. They are similar to Sanxingdui relics. B. They are widely used in ceremonies.
C. They are symbols of power and status. D. They are blessings from an emperor.
23. What is the inspiration of the scene in Jade Xu Palace?
A. A bronze tool. B. A historical site.
C. A romantic story. D. A famous artwork.

B Because the father loves collecting books.
C. Because the author’s books are preserved there.
D. Because the father needs space for bookshelves.
25. Why did the author not want his father to know he had the book?
A. To put the book into his own collection.
B To avoid pressure on his father to discuss it.

A They are the main target of AI scams.
D

____40____
When you’re trying to stay on a path, it helps to know where that path leads. What will it look like to make it to your goal? Try to imagine scenarios where you’re trying to do the thing and you momentarily can’t. It will help to think them through ahead of time and plan out how you will handle them. Then, when the time comes, you won’t hesitate to execute your plan.
A. Set realistic goals
