The Path to Achieving Success
Success is a destination that many people strive to reach, but the journey to it is rarely straightforward. 1 some may seem to achieve success effortlessly, the truth is that for most, it involves overcoming numerous hurdles. Whether it is in the form of academic challenges, career setbacks, or personal struggles, persistence, patience, and adaptability are required along the path to achieving success.
One of the first obstacles 2 stand in the way is self-doubt. When you’re starting a new project or embarking on a new career, you may wonder if you’re capable of achieving your goals. However, it is important to remember that doubt is a natural part of the process. _______ ___3__ _______ you keep moving forward, you can gradually build confidence. Success, after all, is not determined by how many times you fall, but by how many times you get back up.
Additionally, success is not always achieved in a linear(线性的)fashion. Many individuals find themselves 4 (face)unexpected challenges, such as economic hardships or personal crises. 5 it is the loss of a job or a health setback, these experiences can feel like major roadblocks. However, this is precisely when resilience is built. 6 who can adapt to new circumstances and continue to push forward often find that their setbacks eventually lead them to new opportunities.
Success also requires learning from mistakes. We may fail many times — in our studies or careers — and the process of failing many times 7 we achieve the ultimate success can be frustrating. However, success is not solely about avoiding failure; it is about 8 you respond to it. By analyzing your mistakes and seeking ways to improve, you gradually pave the way for future achievements.
In conclusion, the road to success is full of twists and turns, but it is the ability to navigate these challenges 9 determines whether one will finally reach their goals. 10 setbacks you encounter, staying focused and learning from each experience ensures that success is waiting for you at the end of the tunnel.

Animal “languages”
Is language the exclusive property of the human species? The idea of talking animals is as old and as widespread among human societies as language itself. All cultures have legends in which some animal plays a speaking role. “Fox” is a favorite 11 in many Native American tales, and many an animal takes the stage in Aesop’s famous fables.
If language is viewed only as a system of communication, then many species communicate. The question is whether these communication systems are at all like human linguistic knowledge, which is gained by children with no clear instruction, and which is used 12 , rather than simply in response to internal or external stimuli.
Most humans who acquire language use speech sounds to express meanings, but such sounds are not necessarily a basic part of what we have been calling language, as 13 by the sign languages. The chirping of birds and the dancing of bees may potentially represent systems 14 to human languages. If animal communication systems are not like human language, it will not be because of a(n) 15 of speech.

Reports of an African grey parrot named Alex suggest that when the trainer uses words in context, Alex seems to 18 some sounds to their meanings. This is more than simple imitation, but it is not how children acquire the complexities of the grammar of any language. It is more like a dog learning the 19 between certain sounds and meanings, such as heel, sit, and fetch.
To hold that animals communicate by systems qualitatively different from human language system is not to claim human superiority. Humans are 20 to hunting dogs, whose sense of smell is far better than that of human animals; they are just different biologically. The human language ability is rooted in the human brain, just as the communication systems of other species are determined by their body structure.

Truth be told, a life- changing college experience doesn’t begin or end with a high GPA or great university tour. And although parents and teachers alike work diligently to prep their students with the cutting-edge classes and impressive transcripts, they’re 21 one vital skill: emotional intelligence.
A poll of 1,502 first-year college students in the U.S. found that a majority of them wish they had received more 22 preparation for college. Emotional preparedness is 23 “the ability to take care of oneself, adapt to new environments, 24 negative emotions or behavior and build positive relationship,” according to the survey. “Survey data indicate that college readiness requires far more than just a solid academic foundation — finding that seems 25 traditional higher education preparation,” said John McPhee, Executive Director of the Jed Foundation, which co- sponsored the survey. “It is clear that emotional preparedness should be better 26 the work that high school communities are doing to guide students through the transition into college.”
Data show that college students 27 far more than their academics-- and their stress can take a serious toll (代价) on their 28 in school. Forty percent of survey participants felt pressure to pay for college expenses, followed by 30 percent who said their biggest 29 was to make new friends. 30 , keeping in touch with family and friends not at their college (28 percent) and being independent (16 percent) also weighed heavily on college students’ shoulders.
All of these 31 had a negative impact inside and outside of the classroom. Students who felt less emotionally prepared for college were more likely to have a lower grade point average, regularly 32 drugs and/or alcohol, and rate their overall college experience as terrible or poor.
“As high school seniors start applying to college around this time of year, parents and people 33 in their lives can play an important role in helping children build confidence and life skills, said Marisa Glandella-Porco, Co-Founder, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Jordan Porco Foundation, a survey co-sponsor. “It is important to 34 them to choose a college that best fits their needs first and foremost — not only in a(n) 35 sense, but also relative to emotional needs.”
Thankfully, whether your child is packing up for school this fall or still in diapers, it’s never too late (or too early) to begin prepping them for university life. Here’s what parents should do to help their college-bound kid, starting now. Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
A
I received a private message on Facebook. It began harmlessly enough: “Hey, girl. Wanted to invite you to join my next challenge group — we’ll be focusing on fitting in 30 minutes of exercise and a balanced diet.”
It was all becoming too much. Facebook was running my life, not me. But what killed Facebook for me was when I posted a photo, and five minutes later my son asked me how many “likes” it had got. His question was a wake-up call. “Likes” are signs of acceptance and approval. I had forgotten that acceptance and approval need to come from within and had unknowingly set him a bad example.
Before Facebook, surfing the Internet was an occasional distraction (分心) and I spent a lot more time reading books and magazines. I checked in with friends through texts, emails and phone calls. To recreate the simplicity of those days and set a healthier example to my son, I deactivated my Facebook account.
I’d been in the habit of checking Facebook many times a day, so I had to come up with some new habits. I carried a novel and a crossword puzzle book around with me. I rediscovered the pleasure of reading and entertainment. I started taking yoga classes.
I started to remember a few things. My body is fine just the way it is. I have friends who will help me out when I’m in trouble, and I will help them out. I do my best to be a good mother, and our son is happy and healthy. We are very lucky to be able to afford two vacations a year. I stopped looking at the world through my cellphone. I felt completely present in the moment. The break left me feeling better about myself, my family, my home and my life.
After a few weeks, I returned to Facebook. Now I look at the photos of my friends’ kids growing up and treasure how social media allows me to keep in touch with family far and wide. I look in on a daily basis, but no longer with the desire constantly to post updates. It is not an addiction any more.
36.Why does the author refer to the message on Facebook in the first paragraph?

Is Aquaponics the Future of Food?
Welcome to the future of food! Aquaponics responds to the growing need for sustainable methods of food production by taking two practices, pairing the production of fish and plants together and connecting them through an eco-system to create environmental efficiency; Aquaponics uses only 10 percent of water compared to traditional agriculture and yields 2-3 times the amount of food, without the use of chemicals and pesticides (农药). The U. S. and China use roughly half of all chemical fertilizer in the world for food production. Imagine the possibilities.
40.The workshop in Ballroom A is aimed to help the participants ______.
A.study the global economy through the lens of the T-shirt
B.start the journey of a typical factory around the world
C.meet the people that make the clothes which we wear
D.go through every stage of assembling mock T-shirts

A.April Wright and Janice Tsai will host the workshop.
B.This workshop will expose the myth of a social changemaker.
C.The hosts will share some real examples of young people all over the world.
D.You’ll learn about some big and small differences made in some communities.
42.“Aquaponics” mentioned in the last workshop probably refers to ______.

A yearly event in the Florida Keys, Lower Keys Underwater Music Festival is open to divers (潜水者) who enjoy music performances and watery wildlife. Like a scene out of aDisney movie, you’ ll find yourself dancing with a group of fish at this festival! Previous shows have also seen many talented musicians.
Since 1985, there has been a July weekend set aside for jamming out underwater in the name of protection. It’s an amazing combination of music and nature. Event co-founder Bill Becker said, “This festival is an energetic way to celebrate the coral reef, and we celebrate it by looking for a balance between the protection work and public enjoyment.”
The festival gives ordinary people an opportunity to experience the reef like never before. Those who attend it leave not only with fun memories but also with lasting appreciation for this precious environment and the desire to take action. This leads to improved management of the Florida Keys.
Among the continental United States, Florida is the only state cool enough to have its own coral reefs just off the coast stretching (延伸) out for an impressive 360 miles. However, with a great reef comes great responsibility. As reefs around the world continue to decrease, Florida is still able to provide food and shelter for a number of threatened and endangered species. The shallow reef acts as a natural barrier (屏障) against storms and flooding, and maintains a healthy population of fish for catching.
Factors like ocean temperature, pollution, and disease could threaten corals. Many types that make up Florida’s reefs are on the threatened species list. Thankfully, fantastic events like this festival are met with positive reaction and win support for protection. The festival serves as a wake-up call for people to realize the important role they can play in protecting the species. In addition, it reminds communities of the necessity of restoring these vital ecosystems for future generations.
43.What is the festival probably aimed at besides bringing fun?
A.Encouraging coral reef tourism.
B.Raising environmental awareness.
C.Sharing the beauty of underwater music.
D.Honoring the history of the Florida Keys.
44.What does the explanation in Paragraph 3 suggest?
A.The festival can be a win-win activity.
B.Public interest in adventure travel has increased.
C.The festival makes the Florida Keys well known.
D.Some negative impacts of the shows are noticed.
45.What is mainly pointed out about Florida in the text?
A.It relies heavily on coral reef farming.
B.It does well in coral reef preservation.
C.It is creative in fighting natural disasters.
D.It is facing the challenges of climate change.
46.What’s the author’s attitude towards this festival?
A.Surprised. B.Worried.
C.Favourable. D.Uncertain.

How to Cope with Emotional Eating
If you empty the fridge when you’re stressed or upset, that’s called emotional eating. Emotional eating affects most people from time to time. But regularly letting your feelings guide your food intake can affect your health.
Sadness, boredom, and other negative feelings can drive emotional eating. Emotional eating includes eating a whole container of ice-cream after a breakup. Or eating up a bag of potato chips when you’re home alone on a Saturday night. 47 Many people overeat at joyous events, such as parties and weddings.
Eating more food than your body needs can have dangerous results. People who eat for emotional reasons often gain too much weight. This puts them at greater risk for type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, obesity, and cancer. Eating too much has emotional consequences as well. 48
Here are some tips for you to stop emotional eating episodes and break the cycle:
Learn to recognize hunger. Next time you reach for a snack, ask yourself what’s driving it. If you are truly hungry, you’ll notice physical symptoms, such as an empty stomach. 49 If you don’t have those signs, you probably don’t need to eat right then.
Find other interests. Finding an activity that you enjoy can increase self-confidence, which is often poor in emotional eaters. Examples might be yoga, playing a musical instrument, volunteering, or painting. 50 If that’s so, then a new interest can fill your hours and make you less likely to look to food for emotional satisfaction.
A.Emotional eating results from certain feelings, such as anger or sadness.
B.Other less obvious hunger cues include a bad temper and trouble focusing.
C.But happy events can cause emotional eating, too.
D.You may find that your eating is driven by boredom.
E.These include feeling guilty or embarrassed afterward.
F.However, boredom can lead to emotional eating as well.
IV. Summary Writing (10分)

Should Schools Ban Smartphones?
France has not allowed smartphone use in primary or secondary schools since 2018, claiming that it would help children focus, reduce their social-media use and alleviate online bullying. The key question is whether banning smartphones in schools offers any benefits to mental health.
A recent study, led by Amy Orben at the University of Cambridge, asked 17, 409 people between the ages of 10 and 21 how satisfied they were with their lives and how much they used social media. The findings, reported in 2024 in Nature Communications, show that girls who increased their social media use over the course of a year were significantly less satisfied with their lives if the increase took place when they were between 11 and 13. Boys showed the same trend when increases took place when they were 14 or 15 years old.
How much of this will change by banning phones in schools is unclear. In a paper published in the Lancet in February, Victoria Goodyear at the University of Birmingham compared the mental well-being of students in schools that implemented restrictive smartphone policies with those with relaxed policies. Her results show that, though those who spent more time on a smartphone overall have a decline in mental well-being, there was no difference between the two groups. She and her colleagues argue that setting up policies at schools alone is simply not enough.
Researchers are trying to paint a complete picture with both hands tied behind their back. According to Dr Orben, social-media companies routinely refuse to give independent researchers access to detailed data on the behaviour of their users. This forces researchers to rely on less accurate proxy measures, like overall screen time. It means that children playing educational games are being put in the same analytical bin as children who are on social media. A more nuanced(细致的) picture of the effects of smartphones needs to be drawn.

A.To raise a problem. B.To explain a fact.

37.What does the underlined word “deactivated” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Closed. B.Kept.
C.Updated. D.Checked.
38.What did the author do to change her life?
A.She went to the gym as often as she could.
B.She developed some healthy habits.
C.She traveled around a lot for a year.
D.She tried to make money for her holidays.
39.What is the author’s attitude toward social media?

根据第一段内容“I received a private message on Facebook. It began harmlessly enough: “Hey, girl. Wanted to invite you to join my next challenge group — we’ll be focusing on fitting in 30 minutes of exercise and a balanced diet.” (我在Facebook上收到一条私信。一开始还算无害:“嘿,女孩。想邀请你加入我的下一个挑战小组——我们将专注于每天锻炼30分钟和均衡饮食。”)”以及第二段第前两句“It was all becoming too much. Facebook was running my life, not me. (一切都变得太过分了。Facebook在掌控我的生活,而不是我。)”可知,作者在第一段提到Facebook上的私信是为了引出下文她对Facebook对生活影响的描述,即作为一个例子来说明问题。故选D项。
37.词句猜测题。根据第三段划线词所在句“To recreate the simplicity of those days and set a healthier example to my son, I deactivated my Facebook account. (为了重现那些日子的简单,并为我的儿子树立一个更健康的榜样,我deactivated了我的Facebook账号。)”可知,作者为了重现过去的简单生活,给儿子树立一个更健康的榜样,决定对Facebook账号做点什么,结合选项和第四段第一句“I’d been in the habit of checking Facebook many times a day, so I had to come up with some new habits. (我已经习惯了每天查看Facebook很多次,所以我必须得想出一些新习惯。)”可知,她开始培养新习惯,所以此处应是“关闭”了Facebook账号,即deactivated应是“关闭”的意思,与A项Closed意思相近。故选A项。
根据第四段“I’d been in the habit of checking Facebook many times a day, so I had to come up with some new habits. I carried a novel and a crossword puzzle book around with me. I rediscovered the pleasure of reading and entertainment. I started taking yoga classes. (我已经习惯了每天查看Facebook很多次,所以我必须得想出一些新习惯。我随身携带一本小说和一本纵横字谜书。我重新发现了阅读和娱乐的乐趣。我开始上瑜伽课。)”可知,作者通过养成一些健康的新习惯来改变她的生活。故选B项。
39.推理判断题。根据最后一段“After a few weeks, I returned to Facebook. Now I look at the photos of my friends’ kids growing up and treasure how social media allows me to keep in touch with family far and wide. I look in on a daily basis, but no longer with the desire constantly to post updates. It is not an addiction any more. (几周后,我回到了Facebook。现在,我看着朋友们孩子的成长照片,珍惜社交媒体如何让我与远方的家人保持联系。我每天都会看,但不再渴望不断发布更新。它不再是一种瘾。)”可知,作者在离开Facebook一段时间后,又回到了这个平台,但她现在对它的态度更加客观和理性,不再像以前那样沉迷其中。由此可推知,作者对社交媒体的态度是客观的。故选D项。

47.前文“Sadness, boredom, and other negative feelings can drive emotional eating. Emotional eating includes eating a whole container of ice-cream after a breakup. Or eating up a bag of potato chips when you’re home alone on a Saturday night. (悲伤、无聊和其他负面情绪都可能引发情绪化进食。比如分手后吃掉整盒冰淇淋,或是周六晚上独自在家时吃完一整包薯片)”提到负面情绪会引发情绪化进食,并举例说明,后文“Many people overeat at joyous events, such as parties and weddings. (许多人在欢乐场合也会暴饮暴食,比如派对和婚礼上)”举例欢乐场合暴饮暴食的情况,此处需过渡句衔接到正面情绪也会引发情绪化进食,因此C项“But happy events can cause emotional eating, too. (但快乐的事件也可能导致情绪化进食)”符合语境,和前文构成转折,后文是对其展开说明。故选C。
48.前文“Eating too much has emotional consequences as well. (暴饮暴食同样会带来情绪上的负面影响)”提到暴饮暴食会影响情绪,此处需具体说明,因此E项“These include feeling guilty or embarrassed afterward. (这些后果包括事后感到内疚或尴尬)”符合语境,承接前文,其中的These指代前文的emotional consequences。故选E。
49.前文“If you are truly hungry, you’ll notice physical symptoms, such as an empty stomach. (如果你真的饿了,你会注意到一些身体症状,比如胃里空空的感觉)”提到真实饥饿的身体症状,此处需补充其他征兆,因此B项“Other less obvious hunger cues include a bad temper and trouble focusing. (其他不太明显的饥饿信号包括脾气暴躁和注意力不集中)”符合语境,承接前文,其中的Other less obvious hunger cues与前文的physical symptoms对应。故选B。
50.后文“If that’s so, then a new interest can fill your hours and make you less likely to look to food for emotional satisfaction. (如果是这样的话,培养一项新的兴趣爱好就能充实你的时间,让你不太可能通过进食来寻求情感上的满足)”指出培养新兴趣能充实时间,从而解决情绪化进食,此处与情绪化进食是由无聊导致的情况有关,因此D项“You may find that your eating is driven by boredom. (你可能会发现自己的进食行为是由无聊驱动的)”符合语境,是培养兴趣能减少进食的前提条件,其中的boredom和后文的fill your hours呼应。故选D。
IV. Summary Writing (10分)
51.Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in NO MORE THAN 60 WORDS. Use your own words as far as possible.
