Does it end up in a junk drawer buried beneath old charging cables or in a box in the attic? What if your old tech could be put to good use, as a way to help others? In 2020, as schools were shifting from in-person to online classes, Sam Inzerillo, a fulltime software engineer and father of three, found a new calling: fixing up donated laptops for United Way of Greater Nashua’s (UWGN) digital equity program, Tech United. Sam’s connection to Tech United, initially came through his wife’s volunteering with UWGN’s free meal program for school-age children during the pandemic. Sam joined in and found himself capable of repairing donated laptops for students enrolling in virtual classes. He built basement lab, turning old laptops into Chromebooks for any student who wanted to work from home. Now, the repaired laptops, licensed under the Microsoft Registered Refurbisher program, are handed out to low-income residents who use them to apply for jobs, search for an apartment or determine eligibility (资格) for benefits. UWGN also has digital navigators who provide one-on-one tech help for local citizens. “Many things are literally only available through a website or app,” said Sam. “For folks without stable housing or access to the Internet, a free laptop is life-changing.” His mission is to make things as simple and turnkey as possible: a device with all the necessary software. Fixing computers isn’t Sam’s only volunteer work—he also maintains little libraries around the city—however, he likes being able to make laptop repairs at his own pace. This software engineer has been taking computers apart and putting them back together for years. Sam enjoys volunteering and has no plans to stop any time soon. “I’ve lived a blessed life,”he reflected. “It’s given-me the time and the means to give back.” 4. What motivated Sam to start repairing laptops? A. His desire to start a community repair business. B. His shift to online classes requiring remote tools. C. His wife’s involvement in related volunteer work. D. His skill and experience in software engineering. 5. What does the underlined word “turnkey” mean in paragraph 5? A. Ready to be used immediately. B. Affordable with minimal costs. C. Tailored to individual preferences. D. Equipped with advanced technology. 6. What can be inferred about Sam’s character? A. He loves adapting to new volunteer roles. B. He is driven by a practical sense of duty. C. He seeks recognition for his technical skills. D. He prefers efficiency to personal connections. 7. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Repair and Reuse: A Tech Volunteer’s Mission. B. Giving back: Helping Others through Tech United. C. Sam Inzerillo: From Engineer to Community Hero. D. Digital Equity: A Volunteer Committed to Community. C Where is the best place to build a data centre? Not on Earth at all, but in orbit, claims Philip Johnston, chief executive of Starcloud. The cost of launching things into space is falling fast, and once it has fallen far enough “It’s completely inevitable that all data centres will go into space,” he says. An orbiting data centre, in a dawn-dusk sun-synchronous polar orbit that keeps it in continuous sunlight, could use abundant solar energy. The freezing vacuum (真空) of space should make cooling easier, too, because cooling systems are more efficient when the surrounding temperature is lower. Satellite-internet constellations (星座) can provide fast connectivity with the ground. Computing clusters (集群) could be arranged in three dimensions rather than two as on Earth, to speed up data transfer. This summer it is due to launch Starcloud 1, a demonstrator satellite containing AI chips made by Nvidia. These chips will have 100 times more processing power than any put into space before. A second satellite, Starcloud 2, is planned for the end of 2026, with 100 times more solar capacity and 100 times the computing power. The first commercial Starcloud satellite would follow by the early 2030s. Several of these could then be connected and powered by an enormous solar array. There is no doubting Starcloud’s ambition. But critics say its numbers do not add up. One analysis argues that Starcloud has overlooked the protection solar panels need in orbit, overestimated solar power output and ignored the problem of collision (撞击) avoidance. Everything depends on launch costs. If they fall far enough, the cost of sending a data centre into space could be more than canceled out by availability of abundant, cheap solar energy. Starcloud expects reusable, heavy-lift rockets to cut launch costs by more than 99%within a few years. “The first thing you would do, if there’s low-cost launch,” says one analyst, “is build very large data centres in space.” 8. What does paragraph 2 mainly focus on? A. The possibility of building a space station. B. The importance of speeding up data transfer. C. The working efficiency of the cooling systems. D. The strengths of building data centres in space. 9. What can be inferred about the critics’ view on Starcloud’s plan? A. They fully support the idea but question the timeline. B. They think Starcloud has underestimated the challenges. C. They believe space data centres are technically impossible. D. They argue that Earth-based data centres are more efficient. 10. According to the text, which is the biggest barrier to building a data center in space? A. Launch costs. B. Collision possibility. C Power shortage. D. Environmental issues. 11. What is the main idea of the passage? A. The history of satellite technology development. B. The challenges of building data centres in space. C. The potential benefits and plans for orbital data centres. D. A comparison between Earth-based and space-based data centres. D Around 70 years ago, British writer J. R. R. Tolkien created the fantasy land of Middle-earth in The Lord of the Rings, a world that has been attracting fans across the globe ever since. Recently, more than 200 fans of Middle-earth gathered in Beijing to celebrate The Lord of the Rings and Tolkien’s other works. Some dressed as characters from Middle-earth, while others showcased Tolkien-themed artwork and shared insights on the Elvish languages invented by Tolkien-Quenya and Sindarin. AndreaW (not her real name) participated as one of the admirers. However, the 26-year-old from Guangdong doesn’t feel comfortable referring to herself as a “fan”. “Nowadays, the term ‘fan’ carries some negative influences on social media, and I feel that being identified as a fan might lead to specific obligations, such as contributing digital labor to boost popularity or controlling media comments,” she said. “But the truth is, many admirers, including myself, focus more on our creative works rather than highly organized groups.” It might be more appropriate to instead call Andrea Wa “media fan”. Unlike those that follow stars and rising idols, media fans prefer staying on top of various media franchises (特许经营), including books, games, comics, films, or TV shows. Li Sixue, a 32-year-old from Jilin province, is one such fan of Tolkien’s works. Calling herself an “academic fan”, Li aims to document the development of media fan groups in China and get rid of the negativity and misunderstandings surrounding them. “I want to get more people to know that most fans are wonderful young people,” she explained. Li also finds a characteristic among media fans — a strong wish for creation and a do-it-yourself attitude. Creators usually share their works through fan fiction, fan art, cosplays, and different fan-centric activities. These fans use online platforms to share their creations and show appreciation for others’ works. However, for fans who prefer to observe rather than create, participation in events like screening sessions, reading parties, and conventions allows them to engage with the wider fan community. 12. The main purpose of the passage is to ______. A. promote the works of J. R. R. Tolkien B. explain the definition of the term “fan” C. introduce a special fan group — media fans D. invite more people to join in social activities 13. Why does Li Sixue call herself “academic fan”? A. Because her academic performance is good. B. Because she is interested in academic research. C. Because she wants to show her differences to other fans. D. Because she wants to create positive images of media fans. 14. What may media fans be unlikely to do? A. To appreciate others’ works. B. To participate in fan gatherings. C. To create fan art and fan fiction. D. To remove negative online comments. 15. What benefit can the fans who prefer to observe rather than create gain according to the passage? A. Their social life can be widened. B. Their creativity can be promoted. C. Their independence can be inspired. D. Their academic ability can be improved. What’s the Best Kind of Sunscreen? Walk into your local drugstore and you’ll find chemical and mineral formulas in virtually every SPF count and format imaginable, from creams to sprays to sticks. ___16___ Here’s how to choose the right sunscreen, according to dermatologists. What’s the difference between chemical and mineral sunscreens? They serve the same purpose — preventing sunburns and other skin damage from the sun’s UV radiation. ___17___. Sunscreens made from titanium dioxide (二氧化钛) and zinc oxide create a physical barrier-atop the skin that reflects UV light. Chemical sunscreens, meanwhile, feature active ingredients that sink into the skin and absorb UV rays “like a sponge”. Is chemical or mineral sunscreen better? Chemical formulas sink into the skin well whereas mineral sunscreens can leave a chalky white residue. People with sensitive skin may do better with a mineral formula, because unlike chemical sunscreens — these products don’t sink deep into the skin. ___18___ Which SPF is best? ___19___ The FDA recommends choosing a product with an SPF of at least 15. People with fair skin may want to go even higher than that. But after a certain point, SPF values offer diminishing returns. An SPF-50 formula offers such strong protection that upgrading to SPF100offers only a tiny amount of additional benefits. No matter which type of sunscreen you choose, make sure to apply it liberally and often. ___20___ And don’t forget to wear a hat, sunglasses, and protective clothing when you’re outdoors. A But they do so in different ways. B. The higher the SPF, the better the protection. C. Therefore, it’s almost impossible to be allergic to them. D. A higher SPF doesn’t necessarily provide better protection. E. So which one should you throw in your beach bag this summer? F. Reapply every two hours, or more often especially if you’re swimming or sweating. G. People with acne-prone (易长粉刺的) skin may benefit from a mineral sunscreen since zinc can help clear blemishes. Perfect Timing Tuan Pham was feeling pretty good about himself as he neared the 12-mile mark of the Long Beach Half Marathon in Southern California. 4. C 5. A 6. B 7. Sam joined in and found himself capable of repairing donated laptops for students enrolling in virtual classes.(山姆与Tech United的联系,最初是通过他妻子在疫情期间参与UWGN为学龄儿童提供免费餐食的项目。 根据第五段“His mission is to make things as simple and turnkey as possible: a device with all the necessary software.(他的任务是让事情尽可能简单且turnkey:一台装有所有必要软件的设备。)” 故选A。 根据第四段“Now, the repaired laptops, licensed under the Microsoft Registered Refurbisher program, are handed out to low-income residents who use them to apply for jobs, search for an apartment or determine eligibility (资格) for benefits.(现在,这些经过微软注册翻新商计划授权修理的笔记本电脑,被分发给低收入居民,他们用这些电脑来申请工作、寻找公寓或确定获得福利的资格。)”以及第五段““Many things are literally only available through a website or app,” said Sam. “For folks without stable housing or access to the Internet, a free laptop is life-changing.”(山姆说:“很多事情实际上只能通过网站或应用程序来完成。 Repair and Reuse: A Tech Volunteer’s Mission(维修和再利用:技术志愿者的使命)准确概括了文章主旨。故选A。 C Where is the best place to build a data centre? One analysis argues that Starcloud has overlooked the protection solar panels need in orbit overestimated solar power output and ignored the problem of collision (撞击) avoidance. C. Power shortage. D. Environmental issues. 11. What is the main idea of the passage? A. The history of satellite technology development. B. The challenges of building data centres in space. C. The potential benefits and plans for orbital data centres. D. A comparison between Earth-based and space-based data centres. D 9. B 10. A 11. 根据第二段“An orbiting data centre, in a dawn-dusk sun-synchronous polar orbit that keeps it in continuous sunlight, could use abundant solar energy. The freezing vacuum (真空) of space should make cooling easier, too, because cooling systems are more efficient when the surrounding temperature is lower. Satellite-internet constellations (星座) can provide fast connectivity with the ground. Computing clusters (集群) could be arranged in three dimensions rather than two as on Earth, to speed up data transfer.(一个在黎明 - 黄昏太阳同步极地轨道上的轨道数据中心,能让它处于持续的阳光下,可以使用丰富的太阳能。 根据第四段“One analysis argues that Starcloud has overlooked the protection solar panels need in orbit, overestimated solar power output and ignored the problem of collision (撞击) avoidance.(一项分析认为,Starcloud 公司忽视了太阳能电池板在轨道上所需的保护,高估了太阳能输出,并且忽视了避免碰撞的问题)”可推知,批评者认为 Starcloud 公司低估了挑战。 根据第五段 “Everything depends on launch costs. If they fall far enough, the cost of sending a data centre into space could be more than canceled out by availability of abundant, cheap solar energy. Starcloud expects reusable, heavy-lift rockets to cut launch costs by more than 99% within a few years.(一切都取决于发射成本。 故选A。 D Around 70 years ago, British writer J. R. C 13. D 14. D 15. 根据内容,尤其是第五段 “Unlike those that follow stars and rising idols, media fans prefer staying on top of various media franchises (特许经营), including books, games, comics, films, or TV shows.(与那些追随明星和新兴偶像的粉丝不同,媒体粉丝更喜欢关注各种媒体特许经营项目,包括书籍、游戏、漫画、电影或电视节目)”以及后面关于媒体粉丝的描述可知,文章主要介绍了媒体粉丝这一特殊的粉丝群体。 根据第六段 “Li Sixue, a 32-year-old from Jilin province, is one such fan of Tolkien’s works. Calling herself an “academic fan”, Li aims to document the development of media fan groups in China and get rid of the negativity and misunderstandings surrounding them. “I want to get more people to know that most fans are wonderful young people,” she explained.(来自吉林省的 32 岁的李雪就是托尔金作品的粉丝之一。 根据倒数第二段 “Creators usually share their works through fan fiction, fan art, cosplays, and different fan-centric activities.(创作者通常通过粉丝小说、粉丝艺术、角色扮演和不同的以粉丝为中心的活动来分享他们的作品)”以及最后一段“These fans use online platforms to share their creations and show appreciation for others’ works. A. But they do so in different ways. E 17. A 18. C 19. D 20. 【16题详解】 根据上文“Walk into your local drugstore and you’ll find chemical and mineral formulas in virtually every SPF count and format imaginable, from creams to sprays to sticks.(走进当地的药店,你几乎可以找到各种防晒指数和各种形式的化学和矿物配方的防晒霜,从乳霜到喷雾再到棒状防晒霜。)”以及下文“Here’s how to choose the right sunscreen, according to dermatologists.(以下是皮肤科医生给出的如何选择合适防晒霜的建议。)” 【17题详解】 根据上文“They serve the same purpose — preventing sunburns and other skin damage from the sun’s UV radiation.(它们的作用相同—— 防止晒伤和太阳紫外线辐射对皮肤造成的其他损伤。)” Sunscreens made from titanium dioxide (二氧化钛) and zinc oxide create a physical barrier-atop the skin that reflects UV light. Chemical sunscreens, meanwhile, feature active ingredients that sink into the skin and absorb UV rays “like a sponge”.(由二氧化钛和氧化锌制成的防晒霜会在皮肤表面形成一道物理屏障,反射紫外线。 【18题详解】 根据上文“Chemical formulas sink into the skin well whereas mineral sunscreens can leave a chalky white residue. People with sensitive skin may do better with a mineral formula, because unlike chemical sunscreens — these products don’t sink deep into the skin.(化学配方防晒霜能很好地渗入皮肤,而矿物防晒霜可能会留下白垩状的残留。 【19题详解】 根据小标题“Which SPF is best?(哪种SPF最好?)”以及下文“The FDA recommends choosing a product with an SPF of at least 15. People with fair skin may want to go even higher than that. But after a certain point, SPF values offer diminishing returns.
