Wiltons
Set up in 1742 by George Wilton as a shellfish-selling stand in the 18-century Haymarket, Wiltons has a long story. It quickly became popular with the British royal family. After changing places and owners many times, it’s now a seafood place. Its menu has oysters (生蚝) from Scotland and Essex.

A rare painting purchased for $4 at a second-hand store in 2017, turned out to be an original Newell Convers Wyeth sold today for $191,000 during Bonhams Skinner’s American Art auction (拍卖). Not the much talked-about quarter-of-a-million, but it was also not a bad return. The names of both the original second-hand store shopper and today’s buyer have not been shared.
“Newell Convers Wyeth was one of the distinguished illustrators in the early 20th century,” says Maine conservator Lauren Lewis. Among Newell Convers Wyeth’s best-known book illustrations are the vivid images he made for Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1911 novel Treasure Island. He’s also the father of painter Andrew Wyeth and the grandfather of painter Jamie Wyeth. The painting is one of four illustrations Wyeth did for a 1939 edition of Helen Hunt Jackson’s Ramona.
Looking around in a New Hampshire second-hand store for old frames (框架) to restore, a local woman, who, again, has chosen to remain undisclosed to the press, bought a white frame with an old painting inside for $4. She had no idea that the painting was actually a rare work by noted American artist N. C. Wyeth. “It’s everybody’s dream to own a Wyeth,” says Lewis, who helped determine the painting was an original Wyeth.
This past May, while cleaning, the second-hand store shopper came across the painting in her cupboard. Thinking it might have value, she posted images of it on a website devoted to Wyeth. “N. C. Wyeth painted commonly on a brand (品牌) of panel called Renaissance Panel made by the Weber company,” says Lewis. Another, smaller label on the back identified it as an N. C. Wyeth and from the book Ramona, Lewis determined the work was indeed an original Wyeth.
Lewis hopes that the buyer of the Ramona painting will make it available to the general public. “There’s nothing like seeing an original painting,” she says. “I do hope that it remains in a collection that will be willing to lend it — or even give it to a museum.”
4. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 2?
A. Add some background information. B. Provide some tips for the readers.
C. Introduce the following paragraphs. D. Present some more famous painters.
5. Why did the second-hand store shopper buy the painting?
A. To resell it for a big profit. B. To do some DIY repairment.
C. To decorate her new house. D. To enrich her existing collection.
6. How did Lewis determine the work an original work?
A. By examining the painting’s style.
B. By checking the artist’s signature.
C. By identifying the marker on the panel.
D. By comparing it with other Wyeth paintings.
7. What can we infer about Lewis from the last paragraph?
A. She’s interested in buying the painting.
B. She wants the painting shared publicly.
C. She urges the buyer to resell the painting.
D. She highly praises the value of the painting.

More than 100 million hectares of healthy and productive land was lost every year between 2015 and 2019, according to new data released by the UN this month, which shows land degradation is accelerating (加速) across all regions of the world. Barron Joseph Orr, chief scientist at the UNCCD, says governments must put a stop on land conversion (转变) in order to meet global land targets.
In 2022, 196 countries together committed to restoring 1 billion hectares of land by 2030. “But the reality is that these numbers are suggesting that we will have to go full-bore on those one billion hectares of commitments and stop land conversion,” he says.
“On one side, the numbers are telling us we’re going in the wrong direction,” Orr tells SciDev. Net, “On the other, there are also numbers that suggest that we can turn this. But it will mean a need to translate the commitments into actions on the ground,” he adds. Multiple factors lead to land degradation, but mismanagement or over-exploitation (开发) of land is a major contributor as growing demand for food, fuel and so on. Consumption is the underlying driver behind much of what we see in the landscape, Orr explains. “The clothes we are wearing today are probably contributing to land degradation somewhere else,” he says.
“Eastern and Central Asia regions are experiencing the most severe degradation,” says Orr, “while Sub-Saharan Africa, Western and Southern Asia also experienced land degradation at rates faster than the global average.”
Globally, up to 40 percent of land is now degraded, according to the UNCCD. However, it says the data reveals some encouraging “bright spots”. Investments from the Global Environment Facility, the Green Fund, and a number of banks have started to turn global commitments into action. Africa’s Great Green Wall — an initiative to increase the amount of farmable lan — -aims to restore 100 million hectares of degraded land by 2030. Similar initiatives are underway in Southern Africa.
“So, the train is in the right direction,” says Orr. “But now I’m going to speak frankly: it is not enough... We need to accelerate that translation of commitments into action.”
8. What does the underlined phrase “go full-bore” in paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A. Make slow progress. B. Invest carefully.
C. Act with full effort. D. Reduce expenses.
9. What is the main cause of land degradation according to Orr?
A. Natural disasters in Asia. B. Expansion of rural roads.
C. Misuse and overuse of land. D. Lack of international cooperation.
10. What is Orr’s attitude toward the current global efforts to restore land?
A. Critical. B. Dissatisfied. C. Indifferent. D. Guarded.
11. What is the main idea of the text?
A. International aid has failed to restore farmland.
B. Environmental damage in Asia is beyond repair.
C. Technology offers a perfect solution to land issues.
D. Global land degradation is worsening but can be restored.

A system that helps visually impaired (视觉受损的) people to navigate their surroundings using cameras, earphones and artificial intelligence (AI) could offer advantages over conventional sticks for people living in large cities. Cameras have a higher range than a stick, which can typically detect obstacles (障碍物) that are around one metre in front of the person.
The system features a pair of glasses equipped with a camera that captures live images of the wearer’s surroundings. A tiny computer processes these images to detect the presence of other people and objects such as doors, walls and furniture. The device gives the user audio cues about their surroundings every 250 milliseconds, producing a sound in either the right or left earphone to guide them in the right direction. The researchers also created flexible “artificial skin” layers that users wear on their wrists and fingers, for additional navigational assistance. The bands are equipped with their own camera system and the layers vibrate (震动) to warn the wearer when an obstacle is between 40 centimetres and 50 centimetres away.
The researchers first worked with 12 participants with visual impairments to evaluate how well the system could help them to avoid obstacles when walking through rooms. After training with the system, all participants were able to navigate indoors. In another trial, the technology continued to perform well when eight participants tested the device in real-world situations - including walking on a city street and through a conference room with furniture.
The approach is unique in combining audio and touch feedback to keep users aware of what is around them, says Eduardo Fernández Jover, a medical doctor at Miguel Hernández University.
“It’s a proof of concept. They still need to prove it in a higher number of subjects as well as people of different ages. The authors now plan to adjust the design of the device to make it lighter and tinier. Then it’s more invisible, so people will feel comfortable to use it.” says study co-author Leilei Gu, an AI researcher at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China.
12. Why might the new system be better for the blind?
A. It replaces the need for a walking stick.
B. It can detect things farther than a stick.
C. It has been invisible and comfortable to use.
D. It has more cameras than other smart devices.
13. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. How the system functions. B. How audio cues are used.
C. How the system detects obstacles. D. How artificial skin layers are created.
14. What makes this navigation system special?
A. It uses both hearing and touch feedback. B. It needs no training to work well.
C. It can be applied to people of different ages. D. It can be used in any real-world situation.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. AI Glasses and Skin Layers for Navigation
B. Smarter Way for the Blind to Walk in the City
C. New Tech Helps Blind People Avoid Obstacles
D. High-Tech Tools to Assist the Visually Impaired

Steven and I are best friends. We were in the same class and had the same assignments to complete. However, we had very different approaches when it came to our schoolwork.
Steven was very hard-working, and had a strong commitment. He would spend his evenings and weekends completing his assignments, reviewing his notes, and preparing for tests. He also spent time playing with his friends, his brother and his sister.
I, myself, on the other hand, was always looking for ways to have fun. I was only interested in playing video games, hanging out with friends and enjoying my free time. I rarely spent any time studying, doing homework, or even getting enough rest.
One day, our teacher, Marie, announced that we would have a final project due. And it was essential to complete on time to attend the last trip of the year. Steven, being the industrious student he was, completed the project early, and ensured that his work was of high quality. Steven had so much time left before the due date that he decided to help me. Steven knew that even though I was really smart and had the ability to succeed, I still might need some help getting started. So every day, Steven encouraged me to begin. But I always had an excuse.
When I finally started, I realized there was a lot of work more than I could possibly complete in one night. I called Steven for help, but he was already asleep.
Marie told me it was okay to turn in the project late. I smiled with relief and thanked her. However, I soon realized that my excuse did not solve the problem at all. Not only did Marie explain that I couldn’t go on the trip because the project was late, but I also had to attend summer school to make up all the work I missed that year.
Steven was just as disappointed as me. He thought about not going on a trip because I wouldn’t be there. But after talking about it, we both decided he should go and I should stay.

A rare painting, purchased for $4 at a second-hand store in 2017, turned out to be an original Newell Convers Wyeth sold today for $191,000 during Bonhams Skinner’s American Art auction (拍卖).
【答案】4. A 5. B 6. C 7. B

A Natural disasters in Asia.
【答案】8. C 9. C 10. B 11. D

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 That summer, I sat in the quiet classroom, thinking about the choices I had made. Outside the window, the sun was shining, and I could almost hear the laughter from the amusement park. I felt regretful. As I sat through class after class, I slowly began to understand the value of responsibility. I started completing my assignments on time. Though it was hard at first, I found a sense of satisfaction in learning. I realized that if I wanted a better future, I had to earn it through my own efforts. That summer became a turning point in my life.
When Steven returned from the trip, we sat down together and had a long talk. He told me all about the roller coasters, the cake stands, and how they had the best day ever. I listened quietly, smiling, but also feeling a bit sad. Then he said, “Next year, we’ll go together. But only if you put in the work.” I nodded. From that day on, we studied together. That year, I not only improved my grades but also gained something far more important-a deeper friendship, and a new version of myself I could finally be proud of.
