Famed Japanese author Haruki Murakami creates an alternate 1984 called 1Q84 where nothing feels right and everything is slightly different. Set in Tokyo, Japan, this dystopian, mystery-filled fantasy novel is sure to keep your captivated during your trip. Bring “One Hundred Years of Solitude” to read in South America. A significant work of literature, Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s classic follows generations of the Buendia family as they live in their South-American town. Garcia Marquez’s magical realism paired with his lush descriptions makes the book a perfect read for visiting some of the breathtaking sights of South America. Consider picking up “The Great Gatsby” if you’re going to The Hamptons in New York. Although the “West Egg” and “East Egg” in the classic novel more greatly resemble the Great-Neck and Port-Washington peninsulas (半岛) on Long Island, F. Scott Fitzgerald is believed to have been inspired by the Hamptons when crafting this book. Set in the Jazz Age, the book’s decadence, hot summers, and longing for past lovers make it a great companion for pool hopping, charcuterie eating, and luxury shopping in The Hamptons. As you’re travelling around Amsterdam, read “The Fault in Our Stars”. Previously adapted into a film in 2014, John Green’s story of star-crossed teenagers famously includes a trip to Amsterdam. The Anne Frank House and The Rijksmuseum are two of many major destinations mentioned in the book. Plus, the bench from the film adaptation of this novel has ever become its own tourist spot. 1.If you are into parallel existence and you are full of imagination, which book would you like to pick up? A.The Fault in Our Stars. B.One Hundred Years of Solitude. C.1Q84. D.The Great Gatsby. 2.Which one of the followings is NOT true? A.Generations of the Buentia family live in their South-American town. B.One Hundred Years of Solitude is a book mainly about sights of South America. C.“West Egg” and “East Egg” are both place names. D.The Great Gatsby is written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. 3.An excerpt from the book: One might marvel at the insanity (疯狂) of the situation: A mother sends her16-year-old daughter alone with a 17-year old boy out into a foreign city. According to the introduction mentioned above, which city is probably this foreign city? A.Tokyo. B.New York. C.Amsterdam. D.Sao Paulo. 应用文之人与社会 (23-24高一下·安徽蚌埠·期末)Now it’s the perfect time to teach kids about growing things. Try one or more of these plant experiments for fun and learning. *Color carnations (康乃馨) Fill a glass with water and color the water. Add a white carnation stalk (茎) and watch the plant become colorful as it “drinks” the colored water. This is a great, short experiment to show how plants take in water. *Plant root vegetables Find out how root vegetables form underground by planting them in a clear container. First, fill the bottom of the container with small stones. Next, add potting soil and plant rot vegetable seeds, trying carrots or onions, evenly. Keep the soil wet and enjoy watching the rot form. Best of all, when the vegetable is done growing, you can eat it! *Study speedy sunflowers Sunflower seeds sprout (发芽) and grow quickly, making this the perfect flower for impatient children. These seeds can be started just about anywhere, even in a paper coffee cup or yogurt container. Kids love seeing the plant push its way out of the soil, wearing the seed’s outer part like a hat! Move your plant to a flower pot after it sprouts to observe the lower as it forms. *Make a grass basket Grass is another seed that grows quickly. Make a living basket by lining a basket with plastic and filling it with potting soil Put grass seeds on top and water them lightly every day. Growing plants is a great way to bring some leaning—and a little sunshine—to your daily life. Try any of these inexpensive garden experiments for a fun project this spring. 1.Which garden experiment will you choose to see how plants “drink” water? A.Color carnations. B.Make a grass basket. Meta’s speech-to-speech translation Facebook’s parent Meta said it had built a technology tool to directly translate between English and the Hokkien language, a spoken language without a widely used written form. Meta said it trained its AI models on written text examples from Mandarin Chinese. In addition, developers used an encoding tool designed to compare spoken Hokkien to similar English text. Method to identify Parkinson’s disease Researchers announced a new AI method to identify Parkinson’s disease. The system works by measuring a person’s breathing patterns during sleep. With just one night of sleep, the AI system was able to correctly identify Parkinson’s up to 86 percent of the time. With 12 nights of data, the rate went up to 95 percent. Tool to interpret pig emotions Researchers announced they had created a technology tool that uses pig sounds to interpret different emotions. The tool is based on thousands of recordings collected from more than 400 pigs throughout their lives. The scientists developed an AI-driven approach to identify a series of emotions pigs could be experiencing. It is expected to lead to further systems farmers can use to improve the productivity and well-being of their animals. Tool to fill in missing words in ancient writings Researchers—led by Alphabet’s AI company Deep Mind—said they developed an AI system to help fill in missing words in ancient writings. The tool, called Ithaca, is designed to help historians repair the writings and identify when and where they were written. The Serengeti Desert is in Tanzania and Kenya, Africa. It contains thousands of kilometers of dry grasslands and many rare kinds of animals. Edinburgh’s Old Town is in the capital city of Scotland. It has many old buildings and streets. There are very few new buildings in Edinburgh’s Old Town. The Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve is near Mexico City in Mexico. It has beautiful flowers and forests. It is also the home of millions of butterflies in the winter. These three places are very different. But they are all under special protection by UNESCO (联合国教科文组织). They are World Heritage Sites. The story of World Heritage Sites begins more than 3,000 years ago. At that time, the great king of Egypt built many temples. But after thousands of years, sand covered them. Stories tell of a young boy named Abu Simbel who found the temples. One day, Abu Simbel saw something under the sand. Soon, the ancient temples of Ramses Ⅱwere officially rediscovered. But they were not safe. The government of Egypt planned to build a dam on the Nile River. It would create a large lake, which would cover the temples in water. Many people did not want the temples destroyed. UNESCO agreed and raised 40 million dollars from around the world to save the temples. From 1964 to 1968, engineers took the temples apart in many pieces and rebuilt them hundreds of meters back from the Nile River. Today, they are called the Abu Simbel Temples, in memory of the young boy who first found them. The effort to save the Abu Simbel Temples was a success. So in 1972, UNESCO formed the World Heritage Committee, which protects places on the earth that are of great cultural or natural value. Any country in the world can ask for protection from UNESCO. (23-24高一下·北京昌平·期末)Some environmentalists claim that attempts to create a recycling economy for plastics are sure to fail, but the arguments can be not true. In 1980, Disney World in Orlando. Florida, started to work on a new way to generate power for the theme park, cutting its use of oil, the price of which had increased. The Solid Waste Energy Conversion Plant took rubbish, including plastic, and used a method called pyrolysis (热解) to turn it into burnable gases. It opened in 1982, but closed a year later, as the cost of running it went up. Today, environmentalists are mentioning the Disney story to damage the reputation of a set of new technologies, well known as advanced recycling, which take plastic waste and turn it back into brand new plastic. Their argument is false. The failure of Disney’s plant had more to do with a later fall in oil prices than technological or environmental problems. Pyrolysis has improved a lot since the 1980s. And in any case, Disney’s plant was designed to produce fuel, which isn’t classed as advanced recycling. As we report “the incredible new tech that can recycle all plastics forever”, advanced recycling is a game changer that could help to solve the global plastics crisis. It has the possibility to take millions of tonnes of thrown-away plastic, most of which ends up in landfill or the environment, and turn it back into a clean, fresh version by breaking it down to its molecular constituents (分子成分). The goal is a recycling economy. In this case, there is no longer any need to make “virgin” plastic from oil. It isn’t a magic recipe. There are problems around such plants generating toxic (有毒的) waste, their energy use and the continuation of traditional plastics ahead of newer, greener alternatives (替代物). Environmentalists are right to argue that we would be better off gradually getting rid of plastics altogether. But practical considerations mean they aren’t going away any time soon, and most advanced recycling technologies are better for the environment than the alternatives. There is a serious discussion to be had around advanced recycling, not least whether it should be factored into an upcoming global agreement on plastic pollution. Let’s just make sure it is based on the facts, not Disney stories. 1.As for refusing the new tech with the Disney story, the author is . A.worried B.disapproving C.uncertain D.unconcerned 2.What can we learn from this passage? A.Plastics would be soon stopped using. B.Plants with new tech don’t produce toxic waste. C.The new tech features recycling all plastics. D.Disney’s plant turned plastic waste into new plastic. 3.What is the purpose of the passage? A.To argue for advanced recycling. B.To stress benefits of reducing plastics. C.To present failure of recycling economy. D.To discuss the problems of reusing waste. Although protecting wildlife may seem too hard at times, even small actions in your own neighborhood can help protect many different animals. Here are some tips on how to protect wildlife through small actions. ☆Create wildlife friendly areas in your backyard. When you are trying to make your garden more beautiful, you can choose plants that can provide food and shelter for native wildlife. This will also help cut down on pollution. ☆Avoid harming the natural ecosystem in your area. Some plants from other places can kill or harm native plants that provide food and shelter for wildlife. ☆Have a greener lifestyle. By using less water and fewer fuels, you will be helping to protect the wildlife around you. Take buses or the subway when you can, turn off electric devices when you’re not using them, take shorter showers, and keep your room temperature at or below 68 Fahrenheit degrees during winter. ☆Buy products that are wildlife friendly. Don’t buy products that are made from endangered animals. Keep in mind that some endangered animals are killed by traps or hunters who are after wildlife within the same habitat. ☆Donate money or time to organizations that protect wildlife and their habitats. You can give money to organizations or groups that protect wildlife species in your neighborhood. 1.What is one way to create wildlife-friendly areas in your backyard? 【答案】1.C 2.B 3.C 【导语】本文是一篇应用文。文章介绍了四本前往旅行目的地时可以阅读的文学作品。 1.细节理解题。根据第一段中“Famed Japanese author Haruki Murakami creates an alternate 1984 called 1Q84 where nothing feels right and everything is slightly different. Set in Tokyo, Japan, this dystopian, mystery-filled fantasy novel is sure to keep your captivated during your trip. (日本著名作家村上春树创造了另一个1984,名为1Q84,在那里一切都感觉不对劲,一切都略有不同。以日本东京为背景,这本反乌托邦、充满神秘的奇幻小说一定会让你在旅途中着迷)”可知,《1Q84》这本书涉及平行存在,充满神秘,因此适合对平行存在感兴趣、充满想象力的读者。故选C项。 2.细节理解题。根据第二段中“A significant work of literature, Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s classic follows generations of the Buendia family as they live in their South-American town. (作为一部重要的文学作品,加布里埃尔·加西亚·马尔克斯的经典作品讲述了布恩迪亚家族几代人在南美小镇上的生活)”和第三段中“Although the “West Egg” and “East Egg” in the classic novel more greatly resemble the Great-Neck and Port-Washington peninsulas (半岛) on Long Island, F. Scott Fitzgerald is believed to have been inspired by the Hamptons when crafting this book. (虽然经典小说中的“West Egg”和“East Egg”更像长岛的大颈和华盛顿港半岛,但人们认为,弗·斯科特·菲茨杰拉德在创作这本书时受到了汉普顿斯的启发)”可知,布恩迪亚家族家族几代人都住在他们的南美小镇上,“West Egg”和“East Egg”都是地名,《了不起的盖茨比》是弗·斯科特·菲茨杰拉德写的,A、C、D与文意相符。根据第二段中“Garcia Marquez’s magical realism paired with his lush descriptions makes the book a perfect read for visiting some of the breathtaking sights of South America. (加西亚·马尔克斯的魔幻现实主义与他丰富的描写相结合,使这本书成为参观南美洲一些令人惊叹的景点的完美读物)”可知,B项“《百年孤独》是一本主要描写南美洲风景的书”与文意不符。故选B项。 3.推理判断题。根据第四段中“Previously adapted into a film in 2014, John Green’s story of star-crossed teenagers famously includes a trip to Amsterdam. Here is a look back at some notable AI developments in 2022. Here are some of the exhibitions that will be held in 2024. Paper and Light Artists have for centuries explored the interaction (相互作用) of paper and light, This exhibition of drawings charts some of the creative ways in which the two media were creatively used together. Drawings by more modern artists will show the representation of light. Nineteenth — Century Photography Now The small, sepia-toned (棕褐色调的) images made in the 19th century may appear remote and unconnected to the present. However, many of the traditions established during the early rise of photographic technology are still in use today. This exhibition provides fresh views on Getty’s collection of 19th-century photography through the works of contemporary artists who respond directly to its historical themes. Dutch Depictions of Extreme Weather Featuring drawings and paintings by Hendrick Avercamp and other Dutch artists of the early 1600s, this exhibition focuses on landscapes that highlight extremely cold winters and unusually cool summers. It tells a story of global cooling in the 17th century and shows how artists stressed the uncertainty of life and the necessity for adaptation through their descriptions of ice skating and fishing. Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.) This exhibition tells the story of a mid-20th century cooperation (合作) between artists and engineers to form the group Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.). The group’s pioneering efforts to improve communication and cooperation pushed its programs beyond the art world. 1.What is the feature of the Dutch Depictions of Extreme Weather? A.Interaction of paper and light. B.Small and sepia-toned images. C.Landscapes of cold winters and cool summers. D.Exploration of photographic technology. 2.Which exhibition tells the story of a cooperation between artists and engineers? A.Paper and Light. B.Dutch Depictions of Extreme Weather. We’ve put together a list of the best ones to visit across the UK. Grosvenor Park, Chester Every summer, Storyhouse theatre packs up their items and builds an entire amphitheatre (圆形剧场) in Grosvenor Park. This year’s programme sees an eclectic trio: The Gangs of New York, The I’m portance of Being Earnest and The Wizard of Oz. I’m most excited by the first: a new adaptation written by Kieran Lynn and directed by John Young. I don’t think this story has ever been staged before and it seems like a wild pick for a summer outdoor show. Minack Theatre, Cornwall Built into a cliff face in Porthcurno, you hardly need an excuse to visit this theatre. Seeing anything at all, backgrounded by the azure Cornish sea, will be an unforgettable experience. This year sees touring productions of Little Shop of Horrors, and the less-known works of Shakespeare. Pitlochry Festival Theatre, Highland Perthshire Throughout most of the year, the Pitlochry Festival Theatre’s indoor concert hall and studio serve as their regular performance spaces. But this summer, you can see equally lavish productions at the amphitheatre, located in the woods and overlooking Ben-Y-Vrackie mountain. This year they’ll be staging Dido and Aeneas. Shakespeare in the Squares, London Is there anything more luxuriously summery than lazing down to your local square for a bit of Shakespeare and a picnic? This year will be All’s Well That Ends Well. 1.Which play fascinates the author most? A.The Gangs of New York. B.The Importance of Being Earnest. C.The Wizard of Oz. Although protecting wildlife may seem too hard at times, even small actions in your own neighborhood can help protect many different animals. Here are some tips on how to protect wildlife through small actions. Create wildlife-friendly areas in your backyard When trying to make your garden more beautiful, you can choose plants that can provide food and shelter for the native wildlife. This will also help cut down on pollution. Besides, bird or bat houses in your yard or garden can attract and shelter more species. Avoid harming the natural ecosystem in your backyard Some plants from other places can kill or harm the native plants that provide food and shelter for wildlife. Have a greener lifestyle By using less water and fewer fuels, you will do good to help protect the wildlife around you. Take buses or the subway if you can, turn off the electric devices when you’re not using them, take showers for a shorter time, and keep the temperature in your room at or below 68 Fahrenheit degrees in winter. Buy products that are friendly to wildlife Don’t buy products that are made from endangered animals. Keep in mind that some endangered animals are killed by traps, or hunters who are eager to earn money with them. Donate money to organizations that protect wildlife and their habitats You can give money to organizations or groups that protect wildlife in your neighborhood, thus promoting their work. 1.What’s the purpose of this passage? The countries send a list of places to the World Heritage Committee. Once a year, the World Heritage Committee meets and votes on which places to protect. When they choose a place, it officially becomes a World Heritage Site. 1.What’s special about Edinburgh’s Old Town? A.It has no new buildings. B.It’s a World Heritage Site. 根据第三段中“Today, environmentalists are mentioning the Disney story to damage the reputation of a set of new technologies, well known as advanced recycling, which take plastic waste and turn it back into brand new plastic.( 今天,环保人士提到迪士尼的故事,试图败坏一套出名的先进回收的新技术的声誉,该技术将塑料废物转化为全新的塑料)” 和第四段中“Their argument is false.( 他们的论点是错误的)”可推知,文章中提到环保主义者引用迪士尼故事来破坏新技术的声誉,作者指出这种论点是错误的,表明作者对拒绝新技术是持不赞同的态度。故选B项。 2.细节理解题。根据第五段中“As we report “the incredible new tech that can recycle all plastics forever”, advanced recycling is a game changer that could help to solve the global plastics crisis. It has the possibility to take millions of tonnes of thrown-away plastic, most of which ends up in landfill or the environment, and turn it back into a clean, fresh version(正如我们报道的“可以永远循环利用所有塑料的令人难以置信的新技术”,先进回收是一个能够有助于解决全球塑料危机的游戏变革。它有可能将数百万吨被丢弃的塑料,其中大部分最终被填埋或污染环境,转化为干净、全新的塑料版本) ”可知,本文章中提到新技术有可能将数百万吨被丢弃的塑料废物转化为全新的、干净的版本,这意味着新技术可以回收所有的塑料。故选C项。 3.推理判断题。通读全文并结合第四段中“As we report “the incredible new tech that can recycle all plastics forever”, advanced recycling is a game changer that could help to solve the global plastics crisis.
