I was always the type of individual who hated being called on in class. It was not due
to a lack of knowledge — I was, in fact, quite good at grasping the material. Rather, I
disliked the spotlight(聚光灯)being cast upon me. Moreover, I had few friends, and being
overweight since childhood often made me the target of jokes.
I’ve found a way to change all that. It began when a teacher suggested that I try out
for the basketball team. Initially, I didn’t take the idea seriously at all. Being chubby (圆胖
的), I just knew that I’d only embarrass myself. But because the teacher — a favorite with
me — kept insisting I “go for it”, I decided to give it a try.
When I first started attending the practice sessions, I really didn’t have a good handle
on the game of basketball. To be honest, the rules of the game were a mystery to me.
Luckily, I wasn’t the only one “new” to the game, so I resolved to do my best at each
practice session. I was learning, and I was getting better even if it was little by little.
Then it became more fun and more motivating. I practiced and practiced. Pretty soon
the competitive part of me was winning over my chubby-kid complex(综合症). I began to
forget that I was chubby. I even discovered that my “size” wasn’t such a disadvantage at all;
I could make a basket from right under the net and block at the same time!
Gaining self-confidence in playing inspired me to try out other things. I have gone
from “hiding” myself to raising my hand. With my new and improved self-confidence
come more praises, some from teachers, and some from teammates and classmates. But
these days, they also come from the face in the mirror — which is the “person” whose
comments I value most. Best of all, I’m learning to really believe in myself.
24. Why did the author dislike being asked in class?
A. He couldn’t figure out the answers.
B. He felt uneasy about being noticed.
C. He found the teaching style unappealing.
D. He was engaged in developing friendships.
25. How did the author feel on hearing the teacher’s suggestion?
A. Uninterested. B. Misguided. C. Appreciative. D. Confused.
26. How did playing basketball benefit the author?
A. He dropped quite a bit of weight. B. He learned how to cooperate.
C. He developed a funny personality. D. He became sure of himself.
27. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Unlocking Confidence with Teamwork. B. The Secret to Competitive Sports Spirit.
C. A Chubby Kid’s Journey of Growth. D. The Lifelong Influence of a Teacher.
C
Imagine finding yourself in a spoken word(口语诗歌) event (also known as
performance poetry). You’re attracted by the performer on stage as he conveys his deepest
thoughts to the room:
Today I bought you flowers,
How strange meanings can change,
What was once a symbol of joy is now one of pain,
A universal language for when you don’t know what to say.
The crowd is attentive but far from silent. Throughout the performance, you hear
clapping and cheers, expressing approval of specific lines. And then the poem ends with
thunderous applause and the poet returns to his seat. The performance has ended, but its
energy continues to exist throughout the night.
Spoken word events are far from your standard poetry reading. Many people today
think of poetry as a silent, individual act but it actually started as an oral tradition. Before
mass literacy, poems and stories were shared verbally and performed to the public. In
modern times, mass media provided audiences with alternative means of entertainment and
the art of storytelling declined. The recent and increasing popularity of the spoken word is
poetry returning to its oral roots.
The spoken word helps people achieve healing and emotional balance. It shares many
benefits with written poetry, including helping us organize our thoughts, process our
emotions and promote self-reflection. However, it’s not just the sharing of poetry that is
healing. It’s the connections that form between the audience and the poet. This adds to the
degree of social connection, which is central to the essence of spoken word poetry. Poets
can freely be themselves without fear of judgment. Audience members who relate to the
poet’s words also feel healing. Hearing someone who shares your feelings or experiences
can make you feel less alone and more connected.
The spoken word is an unbelievably accessible art form. There are very few rules, and
the form is interpreted fairly broadly. As long as you are performing an original piece
which doesn’t include any offensive content, it will be accepted at a spoken word event.
28.Why is a spoken word performance described in the first paragraph?
A.To explain the process of a spoken word event.
B.To catch readers’ interest in the spoken word.
C.To emphasize the value of spoken word poetry.
D.To encourage audience involvement in the event.
29.What’s the core of spoken word poetry according to the passage?
A.The sharing of individual poems among performers.
B.The same feelings and experiences connecting people.
C.The promotion of self-reflection and emotional balance.
D.The extent of relationships between the poets and audience.
30.Based on the last paragraph, who will be welcome to perform spoken word events?
A.Every individual with published work.
B.Professional poets with published work.
C.Every individual with inoffensive original work.
D.Professional poets with inoffensive original work.
31.What can be the best title of the passage?
A.Spoken Word: More Than Just Poetry.
B.Spoken Word: A New Trend in Performances.
C.Spoken Word: The Practice of Reading Aloud.
D.Spoken Word: The Rising Appeal of Storytelling.

A garden constructed with “humble” clay(粘土) fashioned into 3D-printed bricks
has claimed the first green medal at the Chelsea Flower Show for being the most
environmentally sustainable design.
The Chelsea Flower Show, a celebrated global event held annually at Chelsea,
London, has been a foundation of the gardening calendar since 1913. It began as a way to
show the latest trends in gardening and plant varieties. The Environmental Innovation
Award is the first of its sort and goes along with the gold, silver and bronze medals
awarded to the most attractive and interesting gardens.
Giulio Giorgi, a first-time Chelsea designer, stated he created the
green-medal-winning garden with no concrete. Most gardens contain concrete in some
form and the materials they are built from often generate the highest carbon footprint.
While the employment of pollinator-friendly plants, wild areas and sensible use of
water are well-known easy ways to make a garden more sustainable, Giorgi said it was
crucial to focus on the building materials as their carbon footprint was often overlooked.
“We typically use a lot of metal, cement (水泥) and then all the energy we have to put
in to build the gardens. The material in our garden is low-temperature-fired clay, a resource
that can be found pretty much everywhere. We made this clay into 3D-printed bricks,
connecting ancient tradition with novel practices so carbon emissions are the lowest
possible, if any. The bricks keep water like a sponge and release it when drought strikes
plants,” said Giorgi.
Judges considered end - of - life plans for the gardens and whether materials could be
reused. The 3D—printed nature of Giorgi's garden means it can easily be taken apart and
put together again. As a result, when it is relocated to RHS Garden Wisley, where it will
live on after the show as an educational facility, the carbon emissions will be low as no
materials will be wasted.
32.What do we know about the Chelsea Flower Show?
A.It values sustainability and appeal.
B.It aimed to encourage outdoor fitness.
C.It prohibits concrete in competing gardens.
D.It has a tradition of advocating for greenness.
33.What advantage does clay have over other building materials according to Giorgi?
A.It catches fire less easily. B.It’s more durable and absorbent.
C.It takes less labor to produce. D.It’s eco-friendly and more available.
34.What will become of Giorgi's garden after the show?
A.It’ll be sold publicly. B.It’ll serve as an urban landmark.
C.It’ll be turned into a school. D.It’ll come into play in another spot.
35.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Clay Bricks: Recyclable Building Material
B.Chelsea Flower Show: Celebration of Gardening
C.Garden with Clay Bricks: Winner of Green Medal
D.Giulio Giorgi: Designer Enthusiastic about High-Tech
第二节(共 5小题;每小题 2.5分,满分 12.5分)

为多余选项。
Your identity is who or what you are and what you do. Just as the things you do, such
as following popular fashion, create your identity, the things you read do too. Books,
magazines or even websites you frequently read or visit influence the way you think and
what you believe in. 36 For example, if you had read that littering kills the earth
and contributes to pollution and that has convinced you, you will believe that littering is
bad. Therefore, you will not litter. This is the message you will spread to the people around
you. This will in turn cause the world around you to see you as someone who loves the
earth and you will not litter no matter where you go. 37
Research has shown that reading also affects the way you interacts with people
around you. Reading fiction makes you more empathetic (共情的) to the lives around you.
This is because reading stories leads you to imagine situations, and this makes you
understand others better. 38 You become less self-centred and more caring. People
start seeing you as someone who is merciful, and that becomes part of your identity.
39 What is more important, though, is that you engage in intentional reading,
paying close attention to what you feed your mind. Read autobiographies or biographies of
people who inspire you if you want to be more like them. 40 If you want to be a
songwriter, read more poetry! So, go on. Pick up a book today and read. A new you awaits
you.
A.You’d better select a book that is suitable for you.
B.This becomes part of your identity — an earth-lover.
C.The things you believe in, then, determine the things you do.
D.If you want to be a productive writer, read more fiction books.
E.This is because reading plays an important role in shaping your identity.
F.Therefore, it enables you to be more tolerant and accepting of differences.
G.It is important to read as it affects you to a large extent, creating your identity.

第二节 (满分 25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的
短文。
In a small, cozy house on Maple Street, the Johnson family lived. It was a typical
modern household with its share of joys and challenges. Mr. Johnson was a devoted lawyer
who often worked late into the night. Mrs. Johnson, a passionate nurse, had long work
hours at the hospital. Their son, Tim, was a high school student busy with studies and
after-school activities.
As the clock struck eight, the family gathered around the dinner table as usual. But
instead of warm conversation, there was an awkward silence. Mr. Johnson’s mind was still
at the office, solving legal puzzles. Mrs. Johnson, exhausted from her day, could only think
about the patients she had cared for. Tim was lost in social media on his phone.
“Tim,” Mrs. Johnson said gently, “would you please pass the salt?”
“Tim, did you hear me?” Mrs. Johnson was a little angry.
Tim looked up, shocked. “Sorry, Mom. What’s wrong?” After getting Mrs. Johnson’s
words, he handed over the saltshaker without even making any eye contact.
Mr. Johnson sighed, feeling the distance between them. “How was your day, Tim?” he
asked, trying to break the embarrassment.
“Fine,” Tim replied, not wanting to open up about his struggles with math or the
pressure of upcoming exams.
The meal continued in silence, each person buried in their own world. After dinner,
Tim excused himself to finish homework, while Mr. and Mrs. Johnson washed dishes side
by side.
Mrs. Johnson spoke softly, “We need to find a way to connect with Tim. He seems so
distant lately. We can’t let this continue.”
Mr. Johnson nodded. “I know. Work has been consuming me, and I haven’t been there
for him like I should.”
Later that night, they continued to discuss how to reconnect to their son in a way Tim
might accept while Tim sat at his desk, staring blankly at his math textbook. The equations
blurred together, and a sense of failure welled up inside him. The next morning, as Tim
was getting ready for school, he noticed a note on the kitchen table.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The note read, “Tim, let’s go for a bike ride tonight. Love, Mom and Dad.”
