But they came up with interesting games to play in their childhood. Kicking stone balls During the Qing Dynasty, kicking a stone ball around was a popular game in the northern part of China, and it was often played in winter to keep warm. Playing hide-and-seek Hide-and-seek is a traditional game for children, popular around the country. There are two ways to play: cover a child’s eyes and other kids run around to tease (戏弄) him, or others hide and one child must try to find them. Flying kites Kites have quite a long history. The earliest kites were made of wood not paper. Three famous kites are the Beijing kite, Tianjin kite and Weifang kite. Each has its own feature. For example, the bird-shaped kite with long wings is a special kind of the Beijing kite. Watching shadow plays The closest thing to watching a film during ancient times was going to see a shadow play. The artists control puppets (木偶) behind the screen and tell stories along with the music. 21. According to the passage, the game of kicking a stone ball was__________. A. played in summer B. like flying kites C. invented in Beijing D. popular in North China 22. How do children usually play hide-and-seek? A. One plays and others watch B. Others laugh and one must cry C. Others hide and one tries to find D. One runs and others try to catch 23. What were the earliest kites made of? A. wood B. silk C. paper D. cloth B Several different stories are told about the origin of Saint Valentine's Day. One legend (传奇) dates as far back as the days of the Roman Empire. According to the story, Claudius, the Emperor of Rome, wanted to increase the size of his army. He knew that it would be easier to get young men who were not married to join. Therefore he made a rule that no young man could marry until he had served a certain number of years in the army. A priest (牧师) named Valentine broke the rule and secretly married a great many young people. Finally, Claudius found out about Valentine and put the priest in prison, where he remained until his death on February 14. After his death, Valentine was made a saint (圣人), and the day of his death was named Saint Valentine's Day. It became the custom for lovers to send each other message on this day. Now Saint Valentine's Day is a time for people to send one another greeting of many kinds. February 14, Valentine's Day, is a sweethearts' day, on which people in love with each other express their tender (温柔的) emotions. People sometimes put their love message in a heart-shaped box of chocolates, or a bunch of flowers tied with red ribbons (带子). Words of letters may be written on the flower covered card, or something else. Whatever the form may be, the message is almost the same: "Will you be my Valentine?" 24. Valentine was put in prison because ________. A. he secretly got married B. he didn't serve in the army C. he married many young people secretly. D. he broke the laws 25. According to the rule, ________. A. no young men could get married unless they were old enough B. young men could marry if they served in the army for several years C. no one could get married without the emperor's permission D. young men could marry only in the army 26. This passage mainly tells us about ________. A. how Valentine died B. the Emperor of Rome C. how Valentine's Day is celebrated D. the origin of Valentine's Day 27. What won't people do on Valentine's Day? A. They will send each other chocolates. B. They will send each other flowers. C. They will invite friends to their homes to have a party. D. They will send each other cards. C I have to say it is rather uncommon for males of my age to be classical music enthusiasts. I was not born into a musical family and neither of my parents learned classical music. There wasn’t much music in my home either. So, how did it all start? The story dates back to the times when I was in kindergarten, which has classical music CDs to offer parents. Thinking that it wouldn’t be a bad idea to get me some music to listen to, my parents ordered them without any ambition of developing an interest in classical music or whatsoever. Without knowing who Bach, Vivaldi and Chopin were or what to expect, I just played the CDs one after one and grew increasingly fond of them. What took place meanwhile was my piano studies, which again exposed me to classical music. But I have to admit the beginner pieces sounded rather uninspired and dull to me. Thanks to YouTube, I was able to explore more than what my first piano teacher offered — from piano to orchestral music, from Bach to Scriabin. Very often, I didn’t practise the pieces my teacher assigned, but the pieces I truly loved! It’s also through the Internet that I discovered one of my piano idols later, Grigory Sokolov. Later on, I became interested in not only the music itself, but also composers and music history. I still remember in a 28-day outdoor program in Australia organized by my high school, we weren’t allowed to use our mobile phones and there wasn’t any piano either. What I could only do was to repeatedly recall Chopin’s Preludes (前奏曲) Op. 28 when walking up the hills. I felt peaceful as usual, but even happier with growing enthusiasm for music. To me, classical music explores the deepest emotions of humanity but can be so humorous as well. The magic of it lies in its ability to cast light on aspects of human conditions and, at the same time, to go beyond the reality. 28. What do we know about the author’s parents? A. They knew nothing about music. B. They had to purchase music CDs. C. They never pushed him to love music. D. They rarely valued his creating talent. 29. What can be inferred from the author’s piano studies? A. Online resources benefited him a lot. B. Music history seemed more inviting. C. He recognized the teacher’s advice. D. The piano classes made him sleepy. 30. Why does the author mention the 28-day outdoor program? A. To stress his eagerness to sing. B. To show his passion for music. C. To complain about its strict rules. D. To prove music’s role in calming. 31. What does the author think of classical music? A. It focuses on poetic lyrics. B. It escapes from the reality. C. It gives insights into life. D. It is a peace-seeking art. D Spending a fair chunk on going to see your favourite big artist is not new — but it certainly feels like concert prices have entered a new level. While you could have got Beyonce or Taylor Swift tickets in the UK for £50 if you took a “nosebleed” seat, these had limited availability and quickly sold out. General admission standing tickets for Swift’s Eras tour started at £110.40 with front-row tickets priced at £172.25. It didn’t stop there — by the time many fans got to the front of the online ticket queue, the only tickets left cost upwards of £300. Matt Hanner, booking agent and operations director at Runway, said prices at the top level had risen considerably — but the increase was partly being driven by demand. “We’re seeing a lot more stadium shows, greenfield, outdoor festival-type shows,” he said. “There are more large-scale shows and tours now than ever, and there is a massive appetite among music lovers for bigger spectacles.” Fancy shows mean higher costs — with staffing, the price of the venue, transport, artists’ needs, insurance and loads more to factor in. Meanwhile, frequent Swift collaborator (合作者) Jack Antonoff has said dynamic pricing by ticket sale sites such as Ticketmaster was also an issue when it came to the cost. On its website, Ticketmaster describes its Platinum tickets as those that have their price adjusted according to supply and demand. It says the goal of the dynamic pricing system is to give fans fair and safe access to the tickets, while enabling artists and other people involved in staging live events to price tickets closer to their true market value. Some artists have been critical of the high ticket prices being demanded by others. Singer-songwriter Paul Heaton was praised for capping ticket prices for his tour at £30 to tackle music industry greed. 32. What can be inferred about the cheap tickets for famous artists’ concerts? A. They are mainly offered to members of fan clubs. B. They are readily available for fans who plan ahead. C. They are scarce and often sell out in a short time. D. They are inaccessible because of dynamic pricing policies. 33. What is the relationship between larger shows and ticket prices? A. Larger shows prioritize affordability over performance quality. B. Ticket prices for larger shows remain stable despite growing demand. C. The higher costs of larger shows contribute to increased ticket prices. D. Larger shows reduce ticket prices by spreading the cost across more attendees. 34. How does dynamic pricing influence ticketing? A. It limits fans’ access to lower-priced tickets. B. It reduces competition among ticketing platforms. C. It ensures artists earn more profit from shows. D. It adjusts ticket prices based on real-time market demand. 35. How did Paul Heaton handle the issue of rising ticket prices? A. By offering a discount for early buyers. B. By setting a price limit for his concert tickets. C. By avoiding large-scale venues for his shows. D. By publicly criticizing Ticketmaster’s practices. There was a park near my home. W: In New Zealand, Labor Day is a public holiday. It is held on the fourth Monday in October. Its origin is traced back to the eight-hour workday movement. It started in the newly founded Wellington colony in 1840, mainly because of carpenter Samuel Parnell’s refusal to work more than eight hours a day. He also encouraged other tradesmen to work for only eight hours a day. In October 1840 a workers group passed a resolution supporting the idea. On October twenty eighth 1890 the fiftieth anniversary of the eight-hour day was celebrated with a parade. The event was then celebrated in late October every year as either Labor Day or eight-hour celebration day. In 1899 the government ordered that the day be a public holiday. Starting in 1900, the day was celebrated on different days in different provinces. Ship owners complained that seamen were taking too many holidays because Labor Day was celebrated in one port and then again in the next port. So, in 1910 the government declared that the holiday would be observed on the same day in all parts of the country. 9. When will the speakers go shopping? A. February 14, Valentine's Day, is a sweethearts' day, on which people in love with each other express their tender (温柔的) emotions. C 29. A 30. B 31. 根据第二段第二句“Thinking that it wouldn’t be a bad idea to get me some music to listen to, my parents ordered them without any ambition of developing an interest in classical music or whatsoever. (我父母认为给我买些音乐听听也不错,就订购了那些古典音乐CD,没有任何要培养我对古典音乐产生兴趣之类的想法。)”可知,作者的父母给作者订购古典音乐CD只是觉得让作者听点音乐不是坏事,并没有培养作者对古典音乐兴趣的意图,也就是他们从未强迫作者去热爱音乐。故选C项。 【29题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Thanks to YouTube, I was able to explore more than what my first piano teacher offered — from piano to orchestral music, from Bach to Scriabin. Very often, I didn’t practise the pieces my teacher assigned, but the pieces I truly loved! It’s also through the Internet that I discovered one of my piano idols later, Grigory Sokolov.(多亏了YouTube,我能够探索比我的第一位钢琴老师所提供的更多的音乐——从钢琴音乐到管弦乐,从巴赫到斯克里亚宾。我经常不练习老师布置的曲子,而是练习我真正喜欢的曲子!也是通过网络,我后来发现了我的钢琴偶像之一,格里戈里・索科洛夫。)” 可知,作者通过YouTube探索到了比老师教的更多的音乐,还通过网络发现了自己的钢琴偶像,这说明在线资源使作者收益颇丰。故选A项。 根据第四段“I still remember in a 28-day outdoor program in Australia organized by my high school, we weren’t allowed to use our mobile phones and there wasn’t any piano either. What I could only do was to repeatedly recall Chopin’s Preludes (前奏曲) Op. 28 when walking up the hills. I felt peaceful as usual, but even happier with growing enthusiasm for music.(我还记得在我高中组织的一个为期28天的澳大利亚户外项目中,我们不被允许使用手机,也没有钢琴。我唯一能做的就是在爬山的时候反复回忆肖邦的《前奏曲》作品 28 号。我像往常一样感到平静,但对音乐的热情越来越高,也让我更快乐。)”可知,即使在不能使用手机和没有钢琴的情况下,作者仍然不断回忆古典音乐,并且对音乐的热情更高,这表明了他对音乐的热爱。故选B项。 【31题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“To me, classical music explores the deepest emotions of humanity but can be so humorous as well. The magic of it lies in its ability to cast light on aspects of human conditions and, at the same time, to go beyond the reality. (对我来说,古典音乐探索了人类最深层的情感,但也可以非常幽默。它的神奇之处在于它能够揭示人类生存状况的各个方面,同时又能超越现实。) ”可知,作者认为古典音乐能够洞察人类的生存状况,也就是使人类对生活有深刻的见解。故选C项。 D Spending a fair chunk on going to see your favourite big artist is not new — but it certainly feels like concert prices have entered a new level. C 33. C 34. D 35.
