Most garden-related activities-pulling out weeds, planting new seedlings and harvesting a bunch of flowers, fruits and vegetables-are highly valued. But intentionally designing your garden space can provide even more benefits. This program will help turn your healing garden ideas into reality.
Materials
Drawing or graph paper
Colored pencils and markers
A drawing board
Guided Steps
Decide what type to design Do you want to grow medicinal plants or plants providing nutrient-rich produce? Do you like your garden to relieve stress by offering opportunities for movement and activity?
Visit an outdoor space where you would like to place your healing garden. Take notes about the size of the space and how much sunlight is available. If a personal garden is not feasible (可行的) at this time, you can search out your community for accessible green spaces.
Use your ideas to draw a design for your healing garden on paper. Don’t forget garden decorations like bird feeders and baths!
Suggested Design Elements
A sitting area. This could be a place to relax, read, or talk. It should be comfortable to sit in and shaded from hot sun.

Stone pathways. They add to the calming atmosphere of the garden, not only providing visual appeal but also creating a sense of harmony with nature.
Creative containers. Short on space? Container gardens are for you! You can plant a mobile garden in pots, planters and hanging baskets.

A previously unknown piece of music composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was recently uncovered at a library in Germany, researchers with the Leipzig Municipal Library said in a statement.
The newly discovered Serenade in C is a work made up of seven tiny pieces for a string trio (三重奏) and lasting around 12 minutes. It was uncovered in the collection of the Leipzig Municipal Library while researchers were working on a new edition of the Kochel Catalogue (目录) of Mozart’s works. Every couple of decades, researchers will include new works, revisions, and other changes that Mozart scholars discover over the years.
The new work appears to have been written early in Mozart’s life. The work’s date of 1780 would position it in the productive composer’s mid-20s, but stylistically, the work shares characteristics with Mozart’s pieces from his pre-teenage years. The signature of “Wolfgang Mozart” instead of “Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart” is another clue; Mozart didn’t start signing works with his middle name until he was 13 years old.
In his early years, Mozart wrote many chamber works like Serenade in C, which is classical music written for a small number of instruments. Mozart’s father recorded these works on a list of his son’s compositions. Most of these works were thought to have been lost to history. What makes this find especially important is that it gives new insights into Mozart’s early experiments with chamber music. Until now, the young composer has been chiefly recognized for his keyboard works, arias (咏叹调) and symphonies. This new piece showcases his early genius beyond those more familiar works.
Serenade in C was given its first recorded performance at the launch of the new Kichel Catalogue in Salzburg, September 19th, 2024. It was also played for a packed audience at the Leipzig Opera on September 21st. Three musicians played the piece again outside the opera house, where eager crowds were waiting.
4. Why did researchers complete the new edition of the Kochel Catalogue?
A. To update the Kochel Catalogue.
B. To seek for Mozart’s new works.
C. To expand the library’s collection.
D. To promote Mozart’s achievements.
5. What can be concluded about the new work from Mozart?
A. It is unique to him in style. B. It was produced in his 20s.
C. It was signed in his full name. D. It was written in his early teens.
6. What does the author intend to tell us in paragraph 4?
A. The significance of the new discovery.
B Mozart’s preference for chamber music.
C. Mozart’s close cooperation with his father.
D. The reasons for Mozart not being fully recognized.
7. What was the audience’s reaction to the performance of the new masterpiece?
A. Relieved. B. Confused.
C. Enthusiastic. D. Indifferent.

My Penguin Friend is what you’d expect from an animal picture. Except that it’s better—lifted by a smart screenplay, sensitive direction and a truly beautiful performance by Jean Reno.
It’s based on a real-life event that happened about 15 years ago in a small village in Brazil. A retired fisherman named Joau, rescued a Magellanic penguin who’d been covered in oil following a tanker oil spill (泄漏). He cleaned up the penguin and nursed him back to full health with a daily diet of fish. After some months, the penguin went back into the water and continued his usual penguin life. But the penguin reunited with Joau again. He swam over 5,000 miles, from Patagonia to Brazil, for eight years in a row. And each time he stayed for several months.
My Penguin Friend takes that framework and decorates it with fictional elements that reflect Joau’s sadness. Joau, played by Jean Reno, has been saddened many years over his late son. This has become a hidden barrier between him and the world, but something about caring for this animal brings a part of him back to life.
Something in the way director David Schurmann films the penguin brings out the animal’s essential dignity. At heart, My Penguin Friend is about the dignity of all species of living things, and it’s a call to humanity to do right by the animals with whom we share the planet. It’s not only about what people should do for animals, but about what animals do for us and how they can reconnect us with the natural world.
My Penguin Friend might not hold the interest of younger viewers. There’s a whole subplot centering on a penguin research team that really eats into the runtime without being all that appealing. While its rigid dialogue and stretches of awkward silence might not bother younger viewers the way it bothers me, they certainly impact the pacing, inviting restlessness and phone-checking. But it builds in emotion and becomes genuinely heart-warming.
8. What is My Penguin Friend mainly about?
A. A rescue of an oil-covered penguin.
B. A man’s deep friendship with a penguin.
C. A call for humans to protect wild animals.
D. A team’s extensive research into penguins.
9. What can we learn about Joau from paragraph 3?
A. He regretted releasing the penguin too early.
B. He pleased his son by raising the penguin.
C. He had some misunderstanding of folks.
D. He took great comfort from the penguin.
10. What does the author think of My Penguin Friend?
A. It is lacking in pace. B. It is full of surprises.
C. It takes too long to play. D. It has too much dialogue.
11. What type of writing is the text?
A. A news report. B. A movie review.
C. A children’s story. D. A documentary advert.
D
Trying to convince kids to eat their foods can be a struggle and parents tend to blame themselves or to be blamed by others. But a new study found that being a picky eater isn’t a temporary phase-it’s in the genes.
The study involved more than 2,000 pairs of both identical and non-identical twins born in 2007 and based in England and Wales. Parents answered questions about their children’s eating behaviors from the ages of 16 months to 13 years old. They found that non-identical twins showed different eating behaviors than identical twins, suggesting a genetic influence, while other factors, such as the types of foods eaten at home and where meals are eaten, may only be significant when the child is a toddler (学步幼儿). The research also found that food pickiness tends to peak when a child is seven years old, often declining slightly until they become teenagers.
Most identical twins share 100% of their genetic material, while non-identical twins share 50%, which meant the researchers could compare genetic and environmental influences on food pickiness across both groups and draw inferences from this.
“Picky eating often causes a lot of stress for the children and their families,” Moritz Herle, one of the study’s lead authors, said. “We hope our finding will help to alleviate some of the blame directed at parents. This behavior is not a result of parenting.”
The study found that food pickiness starts during toddler years. This could mean that if children are picky at this age, early interventions to help them learn to eat a wider range of food could reduce their pickiness in the future. Parents should model healthy eating habits and avoid offering children food as a reward for eating disliked foods, as this could create a negative association.
12. What contributes most to kids’ picky eating according to the study?
A. Genes. B. Parenting.
C. Their unique experiences. D. Their family backgrounds.
13. Why were the twins chosen as study samples?
A. They were widely distributed.
B. They were easy to compare by the age.
C. They received home education much alike.
D. They shared similar genes and environments.
14. What does the underlined word “alleviate” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Deserve. B. Accept. C. Ease. D. Shift.
15. How does the author close the text?
A. By giving a summary. B. By making suggestions.
C. By introducing a new topic. D. By analyzing the study limitations.

The proverb “Prevention is better than cure.” is one of those timeless pieces of wisdom. It’s essentially saying that taking care of the small things now can save us from bigger problems later. It’s a simple concept.____16____
One of the most obvious places where this proverb rings true is in health. It is much easier to maintain a healthy lifestyle than it is to deal with illness. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and good sleep habits are all preventive measures.____17____Once a health problem like heart disease sets in, the “cure” is much more complicated and costly. In fact, many chronic illnesses (慢性病) are preventable with the right habits.
____18____Often, we ignore signs of stress, anxiety, or burnout until they become most serious. By taking steps to manage stress—whether through mindfulness practice or recreational activities—you can prevent a full-on mental health crisis. In this sense, prevention is also a form of self-care that can lead to a more balanced richer life.
Why don’t we always follow this proverb? One reason could be that prevention requires planning and foresight, which can be difficult when life gets busy.____19____When something doesn’t go wrong, it’s hard to see the value in the steps you have taken to avoid it. But once we start thinking of prevention as an investment in our future well-being, it gets easier to make it a priority.
____20____The next time you catch yourself thinking, “I’ll deal with that later,” stop for a second and ask yourself: would a little bit of prevention now save me a whole lot of trouble later?
A. So, bring the proverb into your daily life.
B. They can help you avoid serious health issues.
C. The same logic applies to our psychological health.
D. They are what maintain a healthy relationship with others.
E. Another reason is that the benefits of prevention are often invisible.
F. Also, it’s human nature to hope things will fix magically themselves.
G. However, its significance becomes clear in almost every aspect of our life.

In a remote small village situated between rolling hills, there lived a young woman named Elara. From a very young age, she had a passion for drawing. She dreamed of becoming a well-known painter. She spent every waking moment practicing her art, hoping that one day, her paintings would bring joy to others.
Elara’s parents, however, were practical people like other villagers, who valued hard work and concrete results. They often told Elara to focus on something more “useful”. But Elara’s heart was set upon being a painter and nothing else could please her. So she was allowed to have it her own way and continue her painting.
One year, a grand art competition was announced in the nearby city. The winner would receive a high scholarship to study art abroad. Elara knew this was her chance. She concentrated on creating a masterpiece, staying up late into the night, driven by her passion and determination.
When the day of the competition arrived, Elara’s heart was filled with hope. She travelled to the city with her painting, confident of her work. However, doubt began to develop as she walked into the grand hall filled with beautiful artworks. The other paintings were splendid, created by artists with far more experience and resources than she had. Despite her initial excitement, Elara’s painting did not win. She watched as others celebrated, her heart heavy with disappointment, and her dream seemingly broken.
After she returned to her village, Elara couldn’t bring herself to pick up a brush. She avoided the villagers, afraid of their pitying looks and whispered words.
One evening, as she sat by the river, a gentle voice broke her reverie (幻想). It was an old man from the village, known for his wisdom. He was invited by Elara’s parents to help her. “Why do you look so down, child?” the man asked. Elara poured out her heart, sharing her fears and disappointments. The old man listened patiently.

【46题答案】
【答案】Dear Editor-in-Chief,
I’m glad that a special edition for Senior Three students will be added to the school English newspaper. Here are my suggestions on the additional columns.
Firstly, I recommend the new edition carry articles concerning learning methods, so that we can share learning experience and learn from others’ strong points. Secondly, I’d prefer an answer-and-question column to be included, where our teachers will help solve the difficulties in our study. Lastly, an entertainment column is also a good choice. Engaging stories can relieve our tense learning life.

【答案】 “Do you know why the river never stops flowing?” the old man asked. “Because it doesn’t give up,” the old man said. “It faces obstacles, but it finds a way around them. It doesn’t matter how often it is blocked; it keeps moving forward. Your dreams are like this river. As long as you don’t give up, you will find a way.” Elara thought about the old man’s words carefully before she nodded in approval. She decided to embrace her failure as lessons and continue to work hard.
The next day, Elara picked up her brush again. She painted with renewed energy, not for the sake of winning but for the love of her art. She identified her weakest art skills and tried to improve them by studying the works of other artists. She also managed to buy some art books to help her learn new art skills. After a few years’ practice, Elara’s efforts paid off. Her paintings began to attract attention in her village and beyond. She eventually got the scholarship she had once dreamed of, but more importantly, she learned the true meaning of determination and persistence.
