Ally worked with her mother in their vegetable garden every day. The produce from their garden was sold at market. This was how they made their living. Ally’s job was to make sure the plants were never too dry. Each day Ally carefully watered any plant that needed water. Ally helped take care of the garden in other ways, too, so the vegetables would be healthy and ready for the market. Ally often pretended the plants were beautiful roses, like Mrs. Smith’s prize flowers.
“Foolish girl!” her mother spoke angrily. “Flowers can’t be eaten!”
“But Mother, people buy flowers.”
“No one in our poor village wastes money so foolishly. Look after the vegetables. That’s our living.”
Ally knew her mother was right. The only person in the village who made money selling flowers was Mrs. Smith. She grew roses and sold them to flower shops in Austin. Every year she won first prize at the Austin Rose Festival.
Ally envied Mrs. Smith. If she could sell flowers like Mrs. Smith, she would be able to buy things for her mother. But roses were expensive to start, and Ally could only dream about growing them.
One day, Ally visited Mrs. Smith to see her flowers again. Mrs. Smith was inspecting her roses when she arrived. The garden of flowers springing up thrilled Ally. How she wished she could grow such flowers! And even win a prize at the festival!
Mrs. Smith broke her daydream. “Child, come to see the flowers again? Do you know what’s required to grow such flowers?” She chuckled. “Stick to your vegetables.”
Mrs. Smith returned to her gardening, ignoring the sad look on Ally’s face. Then she pulled up what looked like a weed (野草).
“What’s that?” Ally asked.
“A weak plant. Unworthy of my time.” Mrs. Smith said before throwing it over the fence into the field beside the garden.

Surprise (times two)!
My friend Ollie has lived with his grandmother, Abuela, since he was a baby. Abuela is the kindest, smartest, funniest person imaginable! On the morning of Mother's Day, I invited them to my house for a party.
“I love any kind of party if there's a cake!” Ollie said.
“Of course.” I chuckled, “I made a card for my mom, but I still want to find some present to go with it”. Ollie also wanted to buy roses for Abuela, but everything is so expensive at the flower store that he can barely afford a leaf!
Just then, our neighbor, Mrs. Nishikawa who was watering her garden, waved and called, “Good morning, kiddos!” Ollie waved back. “Good morning, Mrs. Nishikawa! Your garden is always so pretty.”
“Oy! It's a mess.” She groaned. “My back has been acting up, and I haven't weeded for days.” Ollie and I were eager to offer help. Half an hour later, both of us had a big pile of weeds. Mrs. Nishikawa smiled and said we could choose whatever flowers we liked for Mother's day bouquets (花束).
We clipped, arranged, and wrapped everything in big sheets of sparkly paper and string. Ollie and I both said that these look just as good as the ones at the store and even better.
As we headed back with flowers in arms, we came up with a plan. Nobody would think to look in my bedroom closet, a perfect place to hide these, except my two cats. It was a good idea that at the exact right time, we would shout “Surprise!” and amaze everybody. But you know perfect plans don't always work out perfectly.
Everybody elegantly sipped tea and not-so-elegantly gobbled cake. Then we took turns saying things we loved and appreciated about Abuela and my mom. Right when they were chatting, Ollie and I snuck (溜走) off to get our surprise.

My brother Mike and I were in the back seat playing the guessing game I Spy (发现) when the snowstorm started. Fat clumps (丛) of white, like a million cotton balls, landed on our car and stuck there. “I spy something white.” I said. “No fair,” said Mike. “Everything looks white. ”
He was right. In the hour since we’d left grandma’s house in Nebraska to return to our house in Illinois, the weather had gotten worse. The flat Nebraska land gave way to lowa hills as steep as roller coasters. The roads were slippery. “I meant Mom’s white coat,” I told Mike. “Your turn.” “I spy something blue,” Mike said.
Dad spoke to Mom. “I don’t like the looks of this.” He was whispering, but I heard him. “It’s getting harder to see anything.” Mom nodded. “The forecast mentioned snow showers, but this looks more serious than that.
On either side of the highway, deep valleys were filled with snow. As the car moved slowly on the icy road, I noticed Dad’s hands were tight on the steering wheel (方向盘).
“Guess!” Mike insisted. “The blue highway sign?” I guessed, although it was hard to read it. Wet snow blocked most of the letters. I looked around. “The blue hat on the girl in the car behind us? ” “Yes! ” Mike laughed. “Your turn. ”
At that moment, our car made a turn suddenly toward a valley, and Mom yelled. Dad managed to straighten the wheel and stay on the road. My heart pounded like I was in a race. I pressed my face against the cold window. Tire tracks on the road showed how dangerous it was! If we went down, how would we ever get out?
Nobody talked. Mike and I stopped playing I Spy. It was like we were all helping Dad drive by holding our breath. The only sound was the swish-boom, swish-boom of the wipers (雨刮器). “We need to get off and wait out this storm,” Dad said. “But I can hardly see the road, let alone an exit.”

Anna, an 11-year-old girl, was excited because today was the drawing contest at her school. Anna was really good at drawing and usually got the highest marks in art. Her teachers would often ask her to make posters for school plays and call on her during free periods to help with cuttings, drawing, shading, coloring and much more. There was an art competition taking place in school and Anna had worked really hard and wanted to win it. But there was one thing that was worrying her today.
Recently, a new girl, Bree, had joined her class. She was also interested in art but she was not as good at drawing as Anna was. Miss Green, the art teacher, helped Bree and taught her tips and tricks to improve her drawing skill. And now Bree was also considered among the best artists in grade six.
Bree was quick, smart and intelligent. Anna became jealous (妒忌) of Bree’s intelligence and felt that the new girl would be tough to beat.
So that day, for the art competition, Miss Green took all the students to the art room, told them their roll numbers and gave important instructions. Anna's roll number was 16, while Bree was number 17. The bell rang, indicating the beginning of the contest. Miss Green wrote on the board: make a scene of a sunset with a flowing river and a sailing boat.
Anna knew that the best tools to make a sunset were oil pastels (油画棒) . Anna started to look for her oil pastels in her art bag. Then, after looking through the bag, she remembered that she had left them at home. Immediately, she got up to tell Miss Green.
Miss Green was surprised at Anna’s carelessness and told her that she was sorry for not offering help, since she didn’t have any oil pastels at hand, either. Anna looked around and failed to find any of her friends there in the room, much to her disappointment.

My name is Mildred Hondorf, a retired elementary school music teacher. Over the years, I found that children have many levels of musical ability though I have taught some talented students. One student I call “musically challenged” was Robby.
Robby was 11 years old when his single mother sent him to my piano lessons. He did not have any inborn ability. He lacked the sense of tone and basic rhythm needed to excel. But he dutifully reviewed his scales (音节) and some elementary pieces that I required all my students to learn. At the end of each lesson he would always say, “My mom is going to hear me play some day.”
Over the months, he tried and tried, but it seemed hopeless. Then one day, Robby stopped coming to our lessons. I thought about calling him but assumed, because of his lack of ability, that he had decided to pursue something else.
Several weeks later, I mailed to the students’ homes a flyer on the upcoming recital (独奏会). To my surprise, Robby, who received a flyer, called and asked me if he could be in the recital. He said that his mom had been sick and he had to stay at home to look after her but he was still practicing.
“Miss Hondorf... I’ve just got to play!” he insisted. Maybe it was his persistence or maybe it was something inside of me saying that it would be alright.
The night for the recital came. The gymnasium was packed with parents, friends and relatives. The recital went off smoothly. The students had been practicing and it showed. Then Robby came up on stage.

Digging for dinosaurs was hot work. Benny sat back on his heels and took a long drink from his water bottle. At first, when Mom and Dad had told him they were going on a dinosaur dig for vacation, he’d been excited. He’d shown off to his friends that he’d find the skeleton (骨骼) of a never-before-discovered dinosaur.
But the real dig wasn’t at all what he’d expected. For starters, he wasn’t even digging. “No shovels (铲子)”, Dave, the paleontologist (古生物学家) in charge, told them. “Any dinosaur bones buried here should be within a couple of feet of the surface. We don’t want to risk hitting around and breaking them.” Then he’d handed out ice picks and paint brushes and showed everyone how to chip and brush away sand and dirt, slowly and carefully, a little bit at a time.
“The most important thing is knowing where to look,” Dave said. “Some rocks aren’t old enough to have dinosaur bones. Other rocks are too old. We’ve studied this area before and found lots of fossils, so I’m hopeful you’ll find some too!”
Well, that had been two days ago, and so far the most exciting thing Benny had found was that his front tooth was loose. He wiggled (扭动) it now. If he couldn’t find any dinosaur bones, at least he could show his friends back home that he’d lost another tooth.
Dave sat beside Benny. “How’s it going?” he asked.
“OK,” Benny said. It didn’t seem very nice to say that he was bored. “This is pretty slow.”
Dave nodded. “Yep,” he agreed. “It’s hard work. Sometimes paleontologists and fossil hunters look for weeks without finding anything. And we hardly ever find a whole skeleton.” He added, “You know, Benny, if you’re tired of searching, you can always help someone else on the crew.”
Benny looked around the dry, rocky hillside. Dave’s assistants were busy taking photographs, drawing pictures, making charts and writing notes. Dave said it was important to take good field notes, to record exactly what you did and where you were when you looked for fossils and facts for truth.

Matt, a boy with impulse-control (克制冲动) and anger management issues, has just entered my class last week. He had been in so much trouble through the years. As a first-year teacher, I was shocked when he stood up suddenly during my class and pushed his deskmate Sam hard when they were arguing over one question.
Later that day, as a punishment, he was suspended (暂停) from lunch break and would have to have lunch alone in the classroom for two weeks. Mat had to earn his lunch break back by proving he could be respectful to others. If he was “good” each day during this period, he'd earn it back. If he wasn't, the process of punishment would restart. Lunch break was very important for students since it was one of the few occasions during the school day when students enjoyed less structure and some time to socialize. Therefore, the punishment was huge for this boy. On the first day, Mat ate quietly and didn't speak much to me. On the third day, however, he began talking.
“Listen,” he said. “I'm sorry about ruining your class. I tried to convince Sam that my way to solve the math problem was much better, but he turned a deaf ear to me and said I was too proud.” “I get it, but you can't push others to accept your way.” I said.
Over the next few days, Matt remained silent most of the time. He would do his homework while he ate. I tried my best to connect and communicate with him, and even had lunch with him. As he opened up to me more, I learned more about him and understood why he was so bad-tempered. I could tell that he was having a hard time missing all the talking and laughing with others.

It was the tail end of the depression (经济萧条), and things were tough. Mum struggled to raise us kids on her own in our small community of New Westminster. BC. My Dad had died five years earlier. There was not much money, so we went on relief, now called social assistance.
Looking back, I realize what Mum went through sending us kids to school. Every morning she would fold and put a new piece of cardboard in our shoes, which were worn out. When we got home, Mum would have “French Toast” — deep-fried bread — ready for us. Rent was twenty-five dollars a month, but Mum couldn’t pay it, and we knew we would be forced to leave right after Christmas. These were hard and sad years, but we never complained.
Christmas was approaching, and we were entitled to a twenty-five-dollar Christmas fund. It was four days before Christmas, and Mum said instead of buying food, she would use the money to pay back rent, assuring us all of a roof for a little while longer. She told us then there would be nothing for Christmas. Mum prayed for a special Christmas.
Unknown to Mum, I had been selling Christmas trees and doing odd jobs to earn enough money to buy a new pair of boots. I knew exactly which boots I wanted. They were Top Genuine Pierre Paris and they had a price of twenty-three dollars.
The big day came on the afternoon of Christmas Eve. Extremely thrilled, I hurried in the street. On the way, I noticed a house with Christmas lights and decorations. It was then that I realized that at our house, we had no lights, no decorations, nor any money for Christmas goodies. I knew then that we would have no turkey or ham for Christmas, and I felt upset.

It was a freezing November night, perfect for high school football. The harvest moon shone bright, illuminating the stadium as our team prepared for the semifinal round of the Championship Our goal was to reach the State Championship game in December.
As the team captain, I felt the weight of the game on my shoulders. Playing in the championship game was something my dad did as a senior in high school. Hoping to make it happen was a far dream of mine. I wanted to do something my dad had done, but better.
The game was fiercely contested, with both teams leaving their all on the field! Our team took an early lead, but the opponents quickly countered. In a desperate attempt at a two-point conversion with three seconds left, we failed and the final score stood at 19-16. The sound of the whistle echoing through the stadium L we realized our dream of reaching the finals was over.
I had my chance and blew it. I completely messed it up I knew where my parents sat and hid my face from their seats. I couldn’t bear the disappointment in the eyes of the crowd. I couldn’t bear the thought of what my dad was thinking. I felt numb, mentally and physically exhaused. I didn’t want to speak to anyone. Wo cheerleaders, no coaches, not my teammates, and especially not my dad. I feared how the conversation would go.
With my gear (比赛用具) in hand, I made my way off the field. I looked up into the stands where my parents once sat. All of the seats were empty. II guessed they had decided to leave early. Was it my failure that drove them away? I didn’t blame them; I was disappointed too.
It is funny how the air can be cold, your body hot and your emotions frozen as a familiar sound falls on your ringing ears. It was a whistle (哨音). A familiar whistle.

Regardless of the weather or the distance, Paul Wilson would make sure low-income students in his neighborhood arrived at their college classes on time.
A retired engineer、76-year-old Wilson had been offering free rides to college students for the past eight years. Since no first had started volunteering his car to the young people. Wilson had covered an astonishing 64,000 miles, and had countless pleasant and often humorous conversation with the students he transported to and from school. The students who he'd driven had go ne on to become physicians, teachers and engineers, but what they'd also got out of their time in school was finding a role model and a friend in Wilson. Some students even called him “Grandpa”.
Tina Stern received rides from Wilson for all her four years in college, and the trips meant much more to her than just free transportation. “It's not just a ride; you're not just sitting there in awkward silence or with your headphones on.” Stern said. “He asks you questions and actually remembers the answers, so the next time you ride with him, he'll check on those things.”
Wilson often went beyond to ensure the welfare and safety of the students. If they had problems with registration, Wilson was there to assist them. If they ran out of certain daily necessities, Wilson would drive to the nearest store and purchase what was needed. For many students, riding with Wilson had allowed them to complete their education—but according to Wilson, he benefited just as much from the experience. “I just love driving, and I love these kids,” Wilson said. “It's such a privilege to be a part of these kids' lives, getting to know them-and hearing their stories."
One day, Stern came across Wilson and his wife in the hospital, where she knew Wilson was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease(阿尔兹海默症).

I was seated in a corner of the fourth-grade classroom, feeling lost. My parents had transplanted me from my old village school to this fancy boarding school in Bangalore. With everything strange around me, I missed my hometown and my old friends because there was now no warm home to rush back to after school and no one to share tales with. I couldn’t help thinking of the happy moments I had spent before moving here. I didn’t even know how long it would take to adapt myself to the completely new environment. Or could I?
Just then there was a loud cheer from my classmates that pulled me back from my memories. A tall, slim teacher in a shirt and a starched skirt came by, announcing that the math teacher was absent and that we would have a free period. She then suggested we do some activities on our own without making a loud noise. I soon learned that this was Miss Thomas, better known as the Sports Miss.
All the girls agreed cheerfully and soon gathered in small groups. Some chatted or giggled while others read books or were seen writing. As a newcomer, I believed it was too early for me to join them. With nothing better to do, I pulled out a sheet of paper, on which I scrawled (潦草地涂鸦) rolling hills, swaying palms, the path that led to my old school, and my teacher with her long hair. While doing this, I sensed a strong feeling of loss, tears welling up in my eyes.
I was so absorbed in drawing my old friends one by one that I didn’t even notice Miss Thomas standing by my side. The moment I raised my head to wipe my tears, I saw her there. I nearly died of embarrassment and tried to hide the paper from her. However, she asked me if I’d like to share it with the class. After a few seconds’ thought, I agreed.

Looking back on my childhood, I am constantly disturbed by a broken blue and white porcelain (青花瓷) bowl, which was from China and handed down from my grandfather’s parents. It was placed high on a wood shelf in the living room and appreciated by all the guests visiting my home. At that time, I rushed to do everything: I was looking forward to growing up, graduating, and showing off everything I knew with all my friends. But my dear grandfather always reminded me: “Garrett, do not show off. You’ll need plenty of patience and modesty, and that is the way to growth.”
Knowing I loved the bowl very much, my grandpa decided to give it to me. But my mother, a lady who worked as a nurse, caring for patients at night, protested. She was afraid I would break it if I showed off. So finally it was still kept on the high shelf, out of my reach.
Soon, it was time for me to enter the new school. Refusing to be sent to school, I rode my new bike to school every day on the winding and tough road. Once I fell over at the bend of the road, but I was happy when my new bike became the envy of my classmates. However, Crawley, one of my classmates, a well-to-do fellow, whose way of impressing others was to parade his possessions before us. His bike was newer; his boots were of the best hide. Actually, what he had was better than ours. until one day he brought a beautiful glass bowl. He said the bowl was from London, absolutely the finest one we had seen.
“I have a blue and white porcelain bowl from China, which is definitely the oldest and finest one that you have ever seen!” I announced. “Yeah? ” said the boy. “Well, show it to us.”

Eleven-year-old Jack was selling balloons in a park one day over a long holiday weekend when he stepped upon a wallet. After picking it up, he searched the wallet to identify the owner and found some $100 notes, some loose change and a key card inside. He didn’t hesitate to do the right thing: according to the sign on the key card, he found where the owner lived.
Seventeen-year-old Chase had lost his wallet earlier that day while out fishing with his friends. He had searched and searched, but in vain. Eventually, Chase returned home and found his wallet sent back in the gate house of the community. But the one who sent the wallet had left without leaving his name or address When the family were talking about the story later that day, they decided that they wanted to do something to pay back the finder’s kindness. But what could they do? They didn’t know who the finder was, not to mention his address. Could they find him?
It was when they were at a loss that a good idea occurred to Chase’s mother, Michelle: they could check the monitor recording of the gate house. Luckily, they got a picture of the boy. She quickly made a Facebook post using the photo, describing the boy’s honest act and expressing how the family were hoping to meet him to convey their thanks in person.
In no time at all, some people in the community recognised Jack and informed Michelle. When Michelle and her family got contact with Jack, they were surprised to learn just what Jack’s family had been going through.
Jack’s father had recently recovered from a disease but was still suffering from the aftereffects. He had difficulty breathing and wasn’t allowed to return to his job at a meat packing plant. So that was the reason why the boy had to sell balloons to help support the family.

One day, Bart decided he wanted to get a dog. So he and his parents drove to the local animal shelter. There were two dogs that Bart liked. But he finally picked one named Scruffy. Scruffy looked exactly like his name—he was small, naughty with hair going in all directions. He just wanted to play and run around all the time.
Bart’s parents did not like Scruffy at all. Scruffy was too energetic for them. The other dog, called Lady, was a very pretty and quiet dog. Since his parents insisted, he agreed to adopt Lady but not Scruffy.
Back home, Lady slept in Bart’s room that night and the next night, too. Bart liked having her near him. He started to love that sweet dog.
On the third day, tragedy struck. For no apparent reason, Lady quietly died in her sleep. Bart felt heartbroken.
The next morning, after they had laid Lady to rest, Bart said, “Mom, Dad, I really liked the other dog, Scruffy. I know he liked me, too. Can’t we go back and get him?”
His parents told him to forget Scruffy because three days had gone by, and it would be too late. “Too late? Too late for what?” he asked. “There are so many animal-lovers coming to the shelter, and if it were too late, Scruffy might have been adopted by someone else.” replied his father.
“What?” exclaimed Bart, not wanting to hear the answer. “But let’s go back anyway. Maybe we can find Scruffy again.”
So Bart’s parents drove him back to the shelter. When Dad parked the car, the three of them entered the shelter and directly went to the wire cage that had held Scruffy days before, only to find it was empty!
“Scruffy is gone! Mom, Dad, he’s gone! Why?”, shouted Bart in great despair.
At that moment, a gentle voice came from a young woman, “Can I help you, folks?”
“Yes, I want the dog that was here, in this cage. The dog is gone. I want that dog. Where’s the dog?” asked Bart anxiously.
“Oh, sorry to tell you he has been adopted by an old man already.” replied the woman.

“Gary, here’s the weekend again. Shall we go to the newly completed basketball court to play basketball?” Jason asked his best friend excitedly. Instead of an enthusiastic reply, Gary looked away, stammering, “I can’t. I... I’ve joined a reading club.” His voice was so soft that Jason could barely catch his words. “To improve your reading? All right. We can go another time then,” Jason said reassuringly (安慰), confused as he was. As far as he knew, Gary had never declined any basketball-related activities. How come this was the case? Shaking his head skeptically, Jason got on his bike, heading for the destination alone.
For the next few days, Gary stayed away from Jason in case he asked more questions. Unwilling to leave his best friend concerned about him, Gary wasn’t ready to tell Jason the truth that he had not joined a reading club but taken on a part-time job at a fast-food restaurant. A few days before, his father had a severe car accident and underwent a major operation. His condition required frequent visits to the hospital, which would contribute to huge medical expenses. The sudden misfortune threw the family into helplessness. His mother had to look after his father. Feeling it his responsibility to support the family at the crucial period, he landed a part-time job, which he thought was the best solution to easing his family’s financial stress.
The moment the dismissal bell rang, Gary rushed out of the school gate to get ready for his shift at the fast-food restaurant. He didn’t want to be late. Latecomers would have their extra allowance deducted (扣除). Customers streaming into the restaurant, Gary quickly took his position behind the counter as a teenager started placing his order. Gary’s fingers moved rapidly to key in the items ordered. The teenager moved aside to wait for his order after making payment.
“Next order, please,” Gary said and looked up, only to find he was face to face with none other than Jason.

Tyler was an energetic and curious 13-year-old boy, who had a passion for learning and exploring new things. Despite facing numerous challenges in his life, Tyler never lost his optimistic attitude and was always willing to help others.
One day when Tyler returned home in the afternoon he found he had new neighbors. They had just moved into the house next door. Tyler was excited because he thought it would be great to have new friends to play with. He went to introduce himself and met the new boy, named Daniel.
Daniel had a round face with bright eyes. He was shy at first, but after a little while, he and Tyler started talking and playing together. From the day Daniel met Tyler, he became his fan. To 8-year-old Daniel, 13-year-old Tyler seemed to be a big boy. He would always follow Tyler around. Whenever Tyler looked up from the book he was reading, he would find Daniel’s face staring at him through the window. When he walked back from the school bus stop in the afternoon, he would have two shadows – one was his own and the other shadow was Daniel walking a few paces behind! But recently, Tyler saw little of Daniel and felt strange about that.
One Sunday, Tyler decided to ride his bicycle to his friend’s house nearby. As he wheeled out his bicycle, he saw a strange sight. Daniel was sitting under a tree holding a book in his hands. Tyler tip-toed closer and discovered that Daniel wasn’t actually reading but lost in thought, looking rather sad.
Tyler took the book out of Daniel’s hands and asked, “What happened?” Two big tears rolled down Daniel’s cheeks. “I want to be like you but I can’t do anything. I couldn’t read attentively,” he said.
It turned out that Daniel just transferred to a new school but he hadn’t adapted to it. He told Tyler he couldn’t concentrate well and some children always teased him for his poor performance in class.

“I want a friend!” my five-year-old’s clear blue eyes showed the pain of rejection. Noah is deaf, and the past couple of years have begun to show what the future holds for my little guy.
The first few years of his life, Noah had many friends in our neighborhood. Small children don’t talk a lot and are content to simply play. As time passed and Noah got to the age where speech and hearing were a noticeable part of “hanging out”, his friends started realizing he was different. Soon, no one came to play with my tiny son, and he too began to understand he was different. My heart has ached, and I have spent endless hours in tears, begging God to send him a friend. But the children at school come from everywhere, and none live near enough to “hang out” .
Noah recently began the heartbreaking hobby of writing and leaving mail on the porch (门廊) for his “friends” . He sticks his own toys to the notes, thinking that he can somehow make friends this way. I often have to retrieve (取回) his notes so that he thinks someone is getting his messages of friendship. His excited trips to the front porch the next morning would sometimes net him a feeling of having an unseen pen pal. It breaks my heart.
But today was different. I got a miracle—in fact, three of them.
My phone rang, and I was distracted with a long-distance friend, catching up with each other’s lives without noticing Noah slipping out the front door. It wasn’t until Nick, my sixteen-year-old son came home for lunch that Noah’s absence was known. Panic-stricken, Nick and I searched the house, yard, and garage ... no Noah.

Last summer, my college’s charity started a campaign “Big Brothers Big Sisters”. It called on college students to care for local extremely poor kids by leading them to our cafeteria and helping them enjoy a good lunch every Sunday for four months. The charity would pay for the kids’ meals.
My schoolmate Molly and I signed up as volunteers. Then, the charity helped us contact a local poor family. The family had a kindergarten girl Melissa. That Sunday morning, Molly and I took the school bus and reached the family. When seeing a shabby house, we were touched. We nervously knocked on the door. Melissa opened it and looked up at us, seemingly wondering, “Could these girls be trusted?” Still, she welcomed us in.
After communicating with her parents for a while, Melissa gave us a tour of their home. “Here is the TV. Here is the picture I drew,” she said. Her parents, quiet in chairs, watched her and smiled. “Here is my brother, who died,” Melissa added. Molly and I just broke inside. Just then, Melissa’s mother called her. Melissa walked over to her, who secretly told her something. Then Melissa came to us, smiling, “Mama said my brother lived inside our heart forever.”
After a short silence, Molly and I chatted a lot with Melissa’s parents. Then, waving goodbye to her parents, Melissa held my hand and Molly’s and happily got on our bus. All the way, Melissa appeared excited.

Dude
The first time my husband Bart told me about his horse, Dude, I knew their bond had been something special.
Growing up on a family farm, Bart loved all animals. But Dude, a birthday gift Bart received when he turned nine, became his favorite. Years later when Bart’s father sold Dude, Bart grieved (悲痛) in secret.
One evening, as we took a walk, Bart suddenly asked, “Did I ever tell you Dude won the World Racking Horse Championship?”
“Rocking?” asked I.
“Racking, it’s a kind of dancing horses do.” Bart corrected, smiling gently. “Dude was the greatest and most intelligent racking horse ever. Whenever I whistled (吹口哨), he would run at me and dance.”
“Then why’d you let your dad sell him?” I asked.
Bart explained, “When I found a job away from home, Dad figured I wouldn’t be riding anymore, so he sold Dude without even asking me. Running a horse farm means you buy and sell horses all the time.”
“I’ve always wondered if that horse missed me as much as I’ve missed him. I’ve never had the heart to try to find him. I couldn’t stand knowing if something bad. . . .” Bart’s voice trailed off (减弱).
My heart ached for him. I didn’t know what to do. Then one day while walking through the pasture (牧场), a strange thought came to me — finding Dude for Bart. How absurd! I thought. I knew nothing about Dude, certainly not how to find him. The harder I tried to dismiss the thought, the stronger it grew.
One morning after that first “find Dude” thought, I met with our new neighbor, Mr. Parker, and started a friendly conversation. When he mentioned he’d once bought a horse from Bart’s dad, I interrupted. “You remember the horse’s name?” I asked.
“Sure do.” Mr. Parker said. “Dude. Paid twenty-five hundred dollars for him.”
I went wild with joy, barely catching my breath. “Do you know what happened to him?”
“I sold him for a good profit years ago.”
“Would you be willing to try to help me find him?” I asked. And then I explained the situation.

The Real Champion
I like running and for me, success was winning every race I participated in. My classmates called me Incredible Dash. One day, there was a sporting event planned in my school. Well-prepared for the running competition, I took part in almost every race there was. A large number of people gathered to watch. Crowds were eager to see the running race because it was the most exciting event. When the race for 400m started, all the boys ran fast. Unsurprisingly, I finished first in the race and received a big round of applause. While it was tiring, I felt proud and was on top of my world.
In the race for 200m, I ran full speed and finished the race first once again. The crowd gave thundering claps to me. I jumped all over the ground and was not bothered to give handshakes to my fellow racers.
Then came the race for 100m. Discouraged by the previous races, most boys quit the race except one, a boy named Matt who was invited as an honorary runner. Matt was born with low vision but he was a determined participant of many sports. The judge came to Matt and explained the situation, asking whether he would like to quit too. I, wild with joy, thought I would win the champion without effort. However, to everyone’s surprise, Matt decided to complete the event. I sniffed (嗤之以鼻), “It is a waste of time. I bet he even doesn’t figure out where the finish line is.”
The race of two started. On hearing the starting gun, both Matt and I ran to the finish line, Soon I sped up and left Matt behind. Just 30 meters before arriving at the finish line, I was expecting to receive the applause for the third time when I suffered a leg spasm (抽筋).

专题07 读后续写
1.(23-24高二下·山东威海·期末)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Paragraph 2: On festival morning, Ally went to greet her own little plant as usual.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】范例1:
Ally smiled and had an idea. She rushed over to the field and carefully picked up the discarded plant. It was delicate, with tiny roots that seemed like they might not survive. Ally took the plant home and found a small, sunny spot in the garden where it wouldn’t be disturbed. She planted it there, promising herself to give it the best care she could. Each day, after watering the vegetables, she tended to her little plant, talking to it and dreaming about what it could become. With time, the plant began to grow stronger, and Ally’s hopes grew with it.
On festival morning, Ally went to greet her own little plant as usual. She was astonished to find it had bloomed into a beautiful rose. So excited she was that she decided to invite Mrs. Smith to have a look. Mrs Smith was just about to leave for the contest. At the sight of beautiful rose, her eyes widened in surprise. “Where did you get that rose?” Mrs. Smith asked. Ally proudly explained how she had nurtured the discarded plant. Mrs. Smith smiled warmly, saying, “You are a great gardener. Perhaps next year, you can grow your own roses and enter the festival.” Ally’s heart swelled with pride and joy. She knew she was one step closer to making her dreams come true and providing a better life for her mother.范例2:
Ally smiled and had an idea. She looked at the discarded plant Mrs. Smith had thrown away. Maybe this wasn’t a weed at all. With a spark in her eye, Ally carefully retrieved the plant and brought it back to her own garden. She nurtured it with great love and care, watering it daily and ensuring it got plenty of sunlight. As the days passed, the plant began to bloom, revealing its true identity: a beautiful red rose plant with buds!
On festival morning, Ally went to greet her own little plant as usual. She was amazed to see a stunning cluster of roses in bloom. Her heart was filled with joy as she took it to Mrs. Smith. Mrs. Smith got stunned at the wonderful roses and offered to take Ally to the festival. To Ally’s surprise, she won the first prize! She had grown her own roses! Flowers could indeed be a valuable addition to their livelihood, even for a poor village girl like her.范例3:
Ally smiled and has an idea. After saying goodbye to Mrs. Smith, she went out of the garden gate. Ally bent over, took the tired plant and rushed home. She transplanted it at a quiet spot behind their cottage, which was secret and a perfect place for it to grow. She tendered it every morning and evening, watering and even talking to it. To her pleasure, each time Ally visited her little plant, it looked greener and taller.
On festival morning, Ally went to greet her own little plant as usual. At the sight of her little flower, she slammed to a stop, and almost tripped her own feet. It was in full blossom, dwarfing Mrs. Smith’s grandest flowers! Ally screamed with delight. Hearing that, her mother came rushing to see what had happened and gasped at its beauty as well. Ally persuaded her mother to take the flower to the festival. To her great joy, her plant won the first prize! The prize money Ally won was used to buy the starter plants for her garden. She knew that devotion is the secret to realizing dreams.

【答案】“NO!” I yelled as soon as our cats dashed out of the bedroom. The sight that met my eyes was both amusing and a little heartbreaking. While our carefully crafted bouquets were now a chaotic blend of petals and stems scattered all over the floor, the cats were completely unaware of the mess they had caused. Ollie and I stood there, momentarily stunned, as our surprise was unveiled in the most unexpected way. The guests, including Abuela and my mom, quickly rose from their seats, trying to contain the playful cats and also attempting to rescue what was left of the bouquets.
“How can you get so beautiful flowers?” Abuela and my mom asked. Ollie and I exchanged a knowing look before bursting into laughter. “Well, it's a funny surprise actually,” I began, recounting our story with Mrs. Nishikawa. Abuela and my mom couldn't help but join in our laughter, their eyes sparkling with amusement. “Tomorrow, I will tell Mrs. Nishikawa what happened to her flowers,” Ollie joked. As we all sat together, talking about the surprises, we knew that the true gift of Mother's Day was the love and laughter we shared as a family.

“I spy something red!” I shouted. “Not now, Kenny,” Dad scolded. “I saw a red, blinking light high in the sky. They were red words,” I continued. “Let’s stop playing the game,” Mom said. But I had seen it. “It was like one of those really tall signs that flash GAS or FOOD like we’ve seen near exits.” Dad glanced at me and then hesitantly looked out of the window. Then, slowly, Dad drove, straining to see. The tires whined as he tried to go up the icy road. “You’re right!” Mom cried, pointing ahead.
We saw a red sign EAT HERE near the exit. All of us let out a big breath. Dad inched the car toward the exit. We finally slipped and slid our way into the parking lot. Parking the car, we then got out of the car and trudged through the deepening snow to the diner. Once inside, we ordered hot soup and bread. It never tasted so good. In the warm diner, we talked about this unforgettable experience. “We wouldn’t have found it,” Dad said, winking at me, “if we weren’t riding with someone who’s very good at I Spy.”

【答案】Paragraph 1:
Anna’s eyes were full of tears. She felt helpless and frustrated, knowing that without her oil pastels, her chances of winning the competition were slim. Just as she was about to give up, she noticed Bree, who was busy sketching away with her own set of tools. A thought crossed Anna’s mind—maybe Bree wouldn’t mind sharing. With a trembling voice, Anna approached Bree and explained her situation. To her surprise, Bree didn’t hesitate and offered Anna half of her oil pastels, saying, “We’re in this together, Anna. Let’s make something amazing.” Anna’s heart warmed as she realized that Bree wasn’t just a competitor but also a friend. With renewed energy, she began to work alongside Bree, using the shared resources to create a stunning sunset scene.
Paragraph 2:
The two girls stood hand in hand, waiting for the winners to be announced. As Miss Green walked towards the front of the room, holding the results, Anna’s heart pounded. She glanced at Bree, who was smiling confidently. To everyone’s amazement, Miss Green announced that the joint effort of Anna and Bree had won the competition. The room erupted in cheers and applause. Anna couldn’t believe it—not only had she overcome her fear of losing to Bree, but they had also accomplished something beautiful together. She hugged Bree tightly, grateful for the lesson she had learned: true talent lies not just in individual skills but also in the power of collaboration and friendship. From that day on, Anna and Bree became inseparable, pushing each other to new heights in their artistic pursuits.

I was surprised when he started to play Mozart’s Concerto flawlessly. The notes flowed with precision, and his expression conveyed a depth of emotion unexpected from someone like Robby. As he played, it was evident that his dedication and hard work had transformed him into a confident and competent pianist. The audience was captivated by his performance, their applause resounding throughout the gymnasium.
In tears, I ran up on stage and put my arms around Robby in joy. I was overwhelmed by the pride for this determined young boy who had defied all odds to deliver such a beautiful performance. Robby’s shining moment not only touched the hearts of those present but also served as a reminder of the power of perseverance and the transformative nature of music. In that precious moment, Robby taught us all a valuable lesson about the limitless potential that lies within each of us when we believe in ourselves and never give up.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Benny thought that he would not give up and keep looking. After all, he had come a long way and spent so much time and effort on this project. He knew that the dinosaur bones were out there, buried in the ground, waiting to be found. And he was determined to find them. So he continued to probe the ground, looking for any signs of the ancient creatures. When he needed a break, he wiggled his loose tooth. Suddenly, his tooth dropped out of his mouth. As he stared down at the dirt to look for it, he shouted excitedly, “My tooth! My dinosaur tooth! I found a real, live dinosaur tooth!”
Dave hurried over to look, carefully not to disturb the ground in front of Benny’s find. After examining it, Dave said, “It’s a tooth all right!” “What kind is it?” Benny asked curiously. “Is it a tyrannosaur? Apatosaurus? Triceratops?” Dave laughed, but he kept studying the fossil in the ground. “Well, Benny,” he finally said, “I’ve seen a lot of dinosaur teeth, but this one’s different. I think you may have found one we haven’t seen before. Good job!”

【答案】One day, a good idea hit me when I met Sam. I suggested that Matt and Sam could work together on a school project during lunch break. Sam readily agreed, and I was relieved to see Matt's eyes light up with excitement. They started to discuss the project, and Matt shared his ideas passionately without getting angry or pushing anyone. It was a great opportunity for Matt to prove himself and show that he could handle his emotions.
Shortly after Sam joined us for lunch, more students came. They were curious about what we were doing and joined the conversation. Matt began to interact with them, sharing his thoughts and listening to theirs. The atmosphere became lively and filled with positive energy. I watched with a smile as Matt slowly fit in and made connections with his classmates. It was a small step, but it gave me hope for his future. I knew that with continued support and guidance, he could overcome his problems and become a better person.

【答案】
As I continued walking, I was feeling a strange sense of guilt. Here I was going to buy a new pair of boots while Mum was home in tears. She would be trying to explain to us why there were no presents. The thought froze me for what seemed ages before I changed my mind. With a load lifted off my mind, I bounced into a big grocery store across the street. Soon, I found myself weighed down by all the Christmas treats. Having spent every dime of my hard-earned money, I went home with satisfaction.
With two full bags of groceries on the doorstep, I knocked on the door eagerly. I could hardly wait to see my mother’s face! When Mum opened the door, she just stood there completely dumbfounded by the groceries. Holding back the tears, I said, “Merry Christmas!” I had a lot of explaining to do as we unpacked all the food and put it away. That day I got enough hugs and kisses from Mum to last two lifetimes. To see my Mum’s prayers answered more than made up for the boots I never got. It was a Merry Christmas for us after all!

【答案】Among thousands of cheers, I recognized that whistle. It came from the sideline. There he stood in his game clothing: red hat, red shirt with my number on his left breast pocket. It was my dad’s whistle. Why did he come to the sideline? What could he say? What news couldn’t wait until I got home? Why was it so important to remind me of the disappointment I had become? Head hanging down, I walked towards him. Our eyes met, both red from heartache. I stared at him awaiting the criticism. He didn’t say, “Good game,” or “You should have done better.” No expression fell over his face.
Then Dad said something I’ll never forget for the rest of my life. He extended his muscular arm, raised a thumb-up, and uttered, “I love you, son.” He loves me? Even after I messed it up? Even though the weight of the game rested on my shoulders, I missed it. He loves me? Exactly. He does! All of those negative thoughts left my head. I didn’t have a father whose love was dependent on my successes or failures. He accepted me, not just for the championship. I have a father who loves me because I am his child and he is my dad. Thank you, Dad. Thank you for showing me the perfect picture of my heavenly father’s love.

【答案】“He isn't what he used to be,” his wife told Stern. "He's still the same kind and caring man, but the disease has taken a toll on his memory." Stern felt a deep sense of sadness and gratitude mingling within her. She couldn't imagine the man who had been such a constant and supportive presence in her life struggling with his own. “I wish there was something I could do,” she said, her voice filled with emotion.
Stern and other students volunteered to help Wilson. They organized a schedule to visit him regularly, bringing him homemade meals, reading to him, and sharing stories of their lives since college. They also helped with his medical appointments and errands, ensuring that he and his wife were not alone during this challenging time. It was their way of giving back to the man who had given so much to them. "We're here for you, Grandpa," they would say, echoing the warmth and care he had once shown them. The bond between Wilson and his "adopted" students had become a two-way street of love and support, a testament to the enduring impact of his selfless acts.

【答案】one possible version :
“Girls, look at this picture,”she announced.“ We have a little artist among us !”She asked me to introduce my drawing. Nervously, I held up my drawing and began describing it, my voice filed with hesitation. To my astonishment, as I finished speaking, the entire class erupted into warm applause. Miss Thomas, with a warm smile, wrapped her arms around me in a tight hug and said to my classmates, “Let’s all congratulate our little artist!” Tears welled up in my eyes once again, but this time it was the outpouring of joy from my deep heart.
Manyof my classmates then came forward, shook my hands and smiled at me. Some even hugged me tightly, making me quickly integrate into this warm family. At that time, I found the world was far more beautiful than I had imagined. Actually, my art was nothing extraordinary, but Miss Thomas broke the ice and planted unwavering confidence within me. I continued in the same school right up to the 10th grade, always with our Sports Miss as a guide, finishing off as the best student in my class.

“I will bring it tomorrow morning! And then you will see how beautiful it is!” After school, I rushed home as quickly as possible and waited for Mother to go to work.

【答案】
Immediately Mother left home, I wondered how I could take the bowl down. The shelf was too high for me. Looking around, I hoped I could find a ladder. Actually, I knew we had never had a ladder in our home. Then, I decided that I could stand on a bench to reach the bowl. Standing on the bench, my heart began to thump with fear. Fortunately, I reached it. When it was taken down, my throat tightened and my knees felt weak. I put it carefully in my bag, a ripple of excitement running through my heart! The next morning, before Mum came back, I rushed to school with the bowl.
I eagerly awaited the arrival of my classmates, ready to show off the precious bowl. When they saw it, their eyes widened in amazement. Just as I was bathed in their admiration, disaster struck. In my excitement, I accidentally knocked the bowl off the desk, and it shattered into pieces on the floor. My heart sank as I realized the bowl was beyond repair. I had not only lost the bowl but also the connection to my family’s past. Later I was severely criticized by Mother. From that day on, I learned the value of patience and humility, just as my grandfather had always advised.

They mapped out a strategy. It was the Internet that helped them quickly find Jack, so they turned to the Facebook again. They posted photos of Jack’s selling balloons, his story of returning the wallet and his family’s suffering on the Internet, appealing to people to help.
The response online was great. The support came rolling in, quicker and in greater quantities than expected! Jack’s story went viral. People living in the city visited the park where Jack sold balloons, and happily bought one or two. Besides, a store owner nearby offered an easy job to Jack’s father. The kind man said he was impressed by Jack. “Nothing could be shinier than an honest heart and duty for the family for a child,” he added. Indeed, an honest heart deserved all the best things in the world.

【答案】Disappointed, Bart determined to find Scruffy back, though. He begged the young woman, “Please, can you tell me who adopted him? I want to see if they’ll let me have Scruffy. He was the dog I really wanted.” The woman hesitated, but seeing the sad Bart, she compromised. “I can’t give you the details, but I can tell you he was adopted by an old man whose house is not far from here.” With a new surge of hope, Bart thanked her and rushed out of the shelter with his parents following behind. Hanging around the shelter, soon, they found Scruffy playing in a big yard. There, they met the old man and explained the purpose of the visit.
Moved by the kind kid, the old man decided to hand Scruffy to him. When Bart and his parents arrived at the yard, the old man saw how Scruffy’s eyes lit up at the sight of Bart, knew he couldn’t separate them again. “Scruffy seems to have chosen you” he said with a smile. “I think he’d be happier with you.” Bart couldn’t believe his luck. He hugged the old man, promising to take good care of Scruffy. With Scruffy back in his arms, Bart felt happy again.

Finally, Gary took a deep breath and confessed, “Actually, I didn’t join a club. I got a part-time job here to help with my family’s medical expenses.”

Gary explained the situation with his father’s accident and the financial strain it had put on their family. “I didn’t want to worry you, so I didn’t tell you the truth,” he said, looking down at his hands. “Gary, you should have told me,” he said gently. “We’re friends, and I would have helped if I could.” Gary smiled gratefully, feeling a weight lifted off his shoulders. “Thanks, Jason. It means a lot to me,” he replied. As they sat there, sharing a quiet moment, Gary knew that he had a true friend by his side, one who would stand by him through thick and thin.

【答案】
Tyler felt sorry for Daniel and decided to do something. He knew that being the new kid in school could be tough, so he offered to help Daniel with his homework and study skills. Every afternoon after school, Tyler would patiently sit with Daniel, explaining difficult concepts and encouraging him to keep trying. He also taught Daniel some tips on how to ignore the teasing and focus on his own progress. Tyler’s kindness and support gradually helped Daniel build up his confidence.
Two months later, Daniel returned from school with good news for Tyler. He had aced his recent math test and received praise from his teacher for his significant improvement. Daniel’s eyes were shining with excitement as he showed Tyler the test paper with a big smile on his face. “I could never have done this without you, Tyler,” he said gratefully. Tyler beamed with pride and happiness, realizing that his small effort had made a big difference in Daniel's life. Their friendship grew stronger, and they continued to support each other through both joys and challenges. Tyler learned that sometimes, being a good friend and making a positive impact on someone’s life could be more rewarding than any personal achievement.

Panic-stricken, Nick and I searched the house, yard, and garage ... no Noah.

【答案】One possible version:
As I searched the house again, a million frightened thoughts came through my brain. A child off on his own is scary enough, let alone a deaf one. I was thrown into sheer panic. Just then came Nick’s yell, “I found him !” I could hear awe in his voice, and I hurried over to see. A few houses down the street, four children were playing excitedly. Noah was right in the middle of it. Like brothers and sisters, they were dancing, jumping, laughing, falling, giggling and chasing each other around the trees. I watched with tear-filled eyes a scene that most mothers see every day, but that I had dreamed of and prayed hard for.
I let them play until lunchtime, at last walking down the street to retrieve my child. I felt like I was floating. “Hi! I’m Noah’s mommy,” my grin was greeted by four chubby, dirty, and happy faces. It was not until then that the three little angels knew my son’s name. Actually, they knew Noah was deaf, but didn’t care at all. “But he can climb and we like playing with him”, said a girl excitedly. Finally they waved good-bye. Noah started off for home, and then turned around. He looked up at me and, with a priceless grin, signed “friends” to me. My heart was just filled with gratitude.

【答案】One possible version:
Finally, we reached the cafeteria. It was alive with kids and volunteers. Melissa followed us to the food counter, marveling at the variety of food. “Wow! They must be yummy.” Hearing her words, I began to explain the different options available, while Molly filled her tray with what she selected. As we sat down at a table, Melissa couldn’t wait to savor every bite. Her face lit up with satisfaction, reminding us of the importance of our mission. Sensing a kid with some leftovers leaving the cafeteria, Melissa paused, looking at the food counter. “Do you need anything else?” I smiled.
Melissa stood up, saying, “Can I bring some grapes home for my family?” She looked at us, adding, “I think nothing is sweeter than grapes here.” Molly and I exchanged glances and nodded, touched by her thoughtfulness. On the bus ride back, Melissa held a bag of grapes gently as if they were treasures. Hardly had she stepped into the house when she shared her experience and the delicious grapes with her family, which melted our hearts. Over the next few months, we witnessed the positive impact of our presence. As summer ended, we reflected on our experience and continued volunteering, knowing that even the smallest acts of kindness could make a big difference.

【答案】Possible versions:
[1]
Mr. Parker agreed to join the search, promising not to say anything to Bart. For nearly a year, there was no result to our secret search and we almost lost hope. One morning, Mr. Parker phoned me. “Hard work paid off! Dude’s been found!” he shouted, “It is on a farm in Georgia and Dude is well.” I couldn’t wait to contact the family and tried to persuade them to sell Dude to me. When I shared with them our story, they agreed. On that very weekend, I invited Bart to drive to Georgia, promising to give him a surprise. Three hours later, we finally parked on a beautiful farm.
Getting out of the car, I asked Bart to whistle as he used to do to Dude. Bart hesitated but whistled. Nothing happened. He whistled again, and we heard a sound in the distance. Suddenly, a horse at a gallop came into sight . Before I could speak, Bart leapt over the fence. “Dude!” he yelled, running towards his beloved friend. I watched the horse and Bart meet like one of those slow-motion reunion scenes on television, moved to tears. Later that evening, we got Dude back home. The moon cast a warm light over us and Bart hugged me and thanked for my surprise, smiling with tears in his eyes.
[2]
Mr. Parker agreed to join the search, promising not to say anything to Bart. We sprang into action. Mr. Parker managed to make contact with the former buyer and got some information about Bart. We then spent weeks searching and making phone calls. No good news came until one day, we finally got a lead. We found out that Dude was living on a farm in the south. I then told Bart I wanted a trip to the south. And he agreed. On the appointed day, we set off. Not knowing the purpose of the trip, Bart looked calm, while I was excited, picturing their reunion. With the mixed feelings, we arrived at the destination.
Getting out of the car, I asked Bart to whistle as he used to do to Dude. He was a little confused at my request, but did as told. Then came the sound of horse hooves. Eyes wide open, I saw a horse galloping towards us. Bart’s face lit up, and tears streamed down his cheeks as he embraced his long-lost friend. As I watched the two friends reconnecting, it was evident that the bond they shared had never been broken. That day, we came back with Dude. Along the way, Bart shared with me their stories and his planning arrangements for Dude. And I knew, the return of Dude had given him more than just a horse.

【答案】I fell hard to the ground. At this moment I felt sad and ashamed that I couldn’t finish the race. I lay on the ground, unwilling to face the fact and the crowds. I imagined the sneering faces and don’t know how to react. Suddenly a hand reached out to me. I raised my head and found it’s Matt. “Let’s run together.” he said. There was just sincerity on his face, no mock. I believed I should trust him, and gave him my hand.
Arm by arm, we walked towards the finish line. The crowds fell into silence, and then broke into loud applause. What did they applaud for? I think I know. Bowing to Matt, I thanked Matt for his help and admitted he was the champion. “No, I participate in the race not for the champion, just for the participation. You are very excellent.” he said. I was surprised at first, and then realized that the full engagement and good faith deserved the real champion.
