Dad read me a speech recently. He wanted to help me find answers to all my questions. Ever since I was very young, I’ve asked “What should I do?” many times. I just didn’t want to make mistakes. Maybe it was because I was a little scared to take my first step by myself.
During my middle school years, I changed. It was when I decided to try for the lead in Beauty and the Beast without asking Dad for advice. I didn’t mind that I would have to memorize lines and movements (动作). Also, I was willing to take the risk of failing.
On the day of the audition (试镜), I kept telling myself, “If you think you can’t do it the right way, just don’t go.” My hands were shaking so badly that I couldn’t say clear words. I wasn’t certain whether people would hear me.
But something happened. When I opened my mouth, I found the sound was loud, powerful and sweet! And I even reached the high notes that I’d never reached! It was fantastic! I was trying bravely even though I might fail. But I didn’t. That audition wasn’t the end of the problems that stopped me from trying, but it was an important part of the process of growing.
That day, I realized that if I want to enjoy my life completely, I have to push myself. Because my parents, friends and teachers don’t always have the answer to “What should I do?”
Now, I take these small chances every day. For example, I share my opinions in class discussions, I ride my horse to jump over a three-foot height and so on.
“Life is learning to handle something unexpected,” Dad stated (陈述) in his speech. But I now know that the plan I make for my life will become easier and easier as I take more chances.
36.What did the writer decide to do during her middle school years without asking Dad for advice?

C.Take part in a horse-riding competition. D.Try for the lead in Beauty and the Beast.

38.The underlined word “handle” probably means “________”.
A.deal with B.worry about C.put on D.look for
39.The writer’s experience of the audition tells us that ________.
A.failure is the end of everything B.we should always listen to our parents’ advice
C.it’s not important to prepare well for an audition D.trying something new can bring unexpected results
40.The best title for this passage could be ________.
A.Dad’s Speech B.My Middle School Years
C.Taking Chances and Growing Up D.The Unhappy Audition Experience

Beyond Burnout (精力耗尽)
America is seriously stressed out. More recently, the American Psychological Association reported that the country’s collective stress had reached worrying levels. 41 So before the stress in your life rises to that level, know there are steps you can take to prevent burnout.
Look for meaning at work. You are more likely to experience burnout-causing stress when something seems out of your control, against your will, or completely meaningless. Try to find ways, even the smallest of your daily tasks improves the lives of others. 42 Then you can live with stress longer.
Try to separate work and home. With the time for work and nonwork mixed up these days, research has recommended strategies you can use. 43 Use separate e-mail accounts for work and home, making a clear line between work and personal life, especially when you work from home.
Don’t ignore yourself. Physical activity is necessary to remove stress hormones (荷尔蒙). Many people are less active in order to rest when under stress. 44 While you don’t have to run away from a mountain lion these days, even light activities help “complete” the stress cycle.
45 It’s very common for your boss to continue to increase tasks over time. Talk to him/her when you feel your job should be more manageable, meaningful and under your control. If you don’t communicate your needs or limits, they may be ignored. If you don’t expect things will improve, consider changing jobs.
If you do feel burned out, proper treatment can help you deal with work-related stress and learn useful strategies and it can teach you to communicate with your boss and keep healthy both physically and mentally.
A.It is very likely to cause burnout.
B.Make an effort to find the work you like.
C.Recognize when it has become too much.
D.You should turn off work e-mail reminders.
E.You must deal with burnout in a proper way.
F.But movement is the most natural response to stress.
G.It makes you believe your work has a good purpose.

Mom was always well-organized. A year or two before she died, she sent me a box of family letters that she wanted me to 51 .
I hadn’t really taken a good look at the box. But recently, I opened the box and found some letters from my grandmother to my mother. 52 I looked through the envelopes (信封), I noticed the postmarks (邮戳) were out of time order.
So unlike my mother!
The first letter was 53 in 1977, the year Grandma died. It must be the 54 letter Grandma wrote to Mom. In her beautiful handwriting, Grandma said how hard it was to 55 the trash during the cold winter, and how she worried about Grandpa. But her words were still full of 56 . She was looking forward to spring and already had some flowers indoors.
The next letter was from 1962. My mother had written to Grandma that she was feeling 57 . Here is Grandma’s reply:
“We may 58 where we’re going and why. But don’t expect to find all of the answers....
59 helps me when I’m low. As you know, flowers always interest me. Sunrises, sunsets, clouds all give me a 60 .”
And Grandma continues: “Luckily, you have always thought of others. And one thing I’m sure you can trust is our deepest love, always...”
61 in our lives do we hear true love? At that moment, I found Grandma’s words filling me with great warmth.
There was another letter in 1922 envelop, much 62 , that Grandma sent to my mother on her 20th birthday.
“Now you are going to start your adult life. I wish I could give you a life of great fun, but I cannot, for that will depend largely on 63 …
Anyway, we wish you a rich life, full of meaningful work, love and friends...”
I now know 64 these letters were out of time order. They were at the top of all so that Mom could reach out at any time, open the thin pages, and hear her mother’s voice in this sometimes painful world.
My mother gave me a gift this Mother’s Day. These beautiful letters 65 me that strong families are built on a mother’s steady (持续的) love, passing down the generations.

Chinese shadow puppetry (皮影戏) is a form of traditional Chinese folk drama. It is probably one of the most ancient arts using light and shadow. It is also 66 mix of many art forms, including painting, music, opera and story-telling. Shadow puppetry was added 67 UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2011.
More than 2,000 years ago, Emperor Wu of Han was very sad about the death of 68 (he) wife. One day, one of his men happened to see some children 69 (play) with toys. The shadows of the toys were 70 (live) on the floor. Then he had an idea—he made a puppet (偶) of the emperor’s wife. As night fell, he invited the emperor to watch a puppet show. This 71 (believe) to be the start of shadow puppetry.
In the Tang Dynasty, shadow puppetry was played by many people in many places around the country. Then in the Yuan Dynasty, it was introduced into West Asian and 72 (Europe) countries along the Silk Road. The art form became the most popular in the Qing Dynasty. At that time, it was played in almost every province and in many kinds of 73 (celebrate) like weddings and birthday dinners.
It is not an easy job to make the puppets. Their body parts are cut separately and then joined together so that they can move 74 (free). During the show, puppetry artists connect the puppets’ most important joints (关节) with sticks. In this way, they can hold the puppets and make the puppets walk, run 75 dance as they want. Sometimes the puppets could be as lively as living things on the screen.
