A Look at the Festivals This Summer
The Firegathering
18-20 May
The Firegathering festival returns to an unidentified place somewhere in the Sussex countryside this May. The ticket price is a very agreeable £40, an amount that the organizers promise covers only the costs of staging (筹办) the event. As well as the night-club singers and dancers and circus performers, you can expect live performances from local stars. If this looks like it might be right for you, you’d be well advised to book your ticket soon; the event has sold out every year since its beginning four years ago.
Sheep Music
20-22 July
Sheep Music started life as a garden party and has developed into a full-scale (全面的) community event. Even though the advertising has always been limited to word of mouth, the huge number of people two years ago left organizers worried that the large crowds could ruin the festival’s family feel. Luckily July sees the return of this brilliant party. The climax (高潮) comes in the shape of Saturday night’s full-scale parade that you just would not expect to happen in the otherwise sleepy Welsh borders.
The Big Chill
3-5 August
Ten years on and The Big Chill could very well be close to becoming a big pop festival like Glastonbury. That said the many thousands in attendance are still able to relax in the beautiful Eastnor deer park and listen to plenty of music that would otherwise pass them by. Families have always been given a warm welcome and it’s fair to say that The Big Chill is probably the most child-friendly of all the medium-sized festivals. If you’ve never been, you should certainly go.
Summer Sundae
10-12 August
Although only a year old this summer, Summer Sundae has quickly inspired the imaginations of Leicesteks music lovers. Last year’s event was a success, noted by more than a few mentions at the UK Festival Awards. It is set in the impressive grounds of De Montfort Hall. Although the performers are still to be confirmed, the cabins (小屋) are sure to be there. These small buildings are made from wood and carpets, storage space, and can fit a family for the night.

Dear Sharon Draper,
A lot of books have flashes of insight, but only few of them can open the readers’ mind and make them realize something new. Your book, Out of My Mind, filled me with those sparks. I enjoyed getting to know Melody. Despite the fact that she had cerebral palsy(脑瘫),Melody had an amazing character that shone brightly. Out of My Mind helped me learn a life-long lesson.
Your book has changed my point of view. I never teased those who had special needs, but I never really felt comfortable around them either. When I started reading your novel, I saw how Melody was a smart and talented girl. At the beginning of the book, I asked myself, “Would I be Melody’s friend?” The voice in my stomach told me the sad truth: no. I carried on with your book from start to finish, and when I closed it, I asked myself the same question, “Would I be Melody’s friend?” I realized, with a smile, that the answer was right in front of me. Throughout Out of My Mind, I had become Melody’s friend.
Last year, there was a boy in my class who had Asperger’s syndrome(阿斯伯格综合症). I didn’t really know him; he just seemed different to me. This was around the time that I read your novel. Melody showed me how she was just as good as anyone else in her classroom and how the same goes for anyone else with disabilities. The boy in my class amazed me by what he was capable of doing. As the days went by, I started helping him instead of avoiding him.
Melody opened my eyes and cleared the world around me. She showed me how a girl with cerebral palsy was the same as a girl like me. Now it is time for me to thank you for writing this amazing novel. I will never forget your fantastic book.
Sincerely,
Margaret Lim

A. The characters of a disabled girl.
B. The change of Margaret’s attitude toward the disabled.

How fit are your teeth? Are you lazy about brushing them? Never fear: An inventor is on the case. An electric toothbrush senses how long and how well you brush, and it lets you track your performance on your phone.
The Kolibree toothbrush was exhibited at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week. It senses how it is moved and can send the information to an Android phone or iPhone via a Bluetooth wireless connection.
The toothbrush will be able to teach you to brush right (don’t forget the insides of the teeth!) and make sure you’re brushing long enough. “It’s kind of like having a dentist actually watch your brushing on a day-to-day basis,” says Thomas Serval, the French inventor.
The toothbrush will also be able to talk to other applications on your phone so developers could, for instance, create a game controlled by your toothbrush. You could score points for beating monsters among your teeth. “We try to make it smart but also fun,” Several says.
Serval says he was inspired by his experience as a father. He would come home from work and ask his kids if they had brushed their teeth. They said “yes,” but Serval would find their toothbrush heads dry. He decided he needed a brush that really told him how well his children brushed.
The company says the Kolibree will go on sale this summer, for $99 to $199, developing on features. The U.S. is the first target market.
Serval says that one day, it’ll be possible to replace the brush on the handle with a brushing unit that also has a camera. The camera can even examine holes in your teeth while you brush.

I am sitting in an empty football field after my last high school football game has finished a few hours ago. I’m the quarterback (前卫) on my team. But in fact that’s not true now. I was the quarterback, and that’s a good way to end a high school football career at a high point.
I’ve been sitting here by myself shivering in the cold and thinking back over the game and other games I’ve played in my life. I’m looking at the goal and thinking how it always seemed to reach out and pull me with a secret, magical force.
I was 8 when I first started playing football. My dad loved football and would practice with me at home- passing, catching, running. He tried to teach me everything he knew about the game. “Just remember: don’t ever give up.” “Stay in the game. Don’t lose your concentration.” “Go out there-and give 110 percent every time.” Well, that was a long time ago but I still hear his words ringing in my ears. I had a lot on my mind before the game today. I don’t like things to be an end, I guess, and this was the last game, and it was the league championship. I was talking to myself and reminding myself about what to do and not to do. I didn’t sleep at all last night. But when the game started my mind became empty. Everything dropped away from me. I just lived in this game, this moment. I didn’t hear the crowd; I didn’t feel the cold or the pain; I never felt tired. I just kept my eyes on the ball, and inside a soft white light showing me the way to the goal, which was a beautiful feeling.
It’s all over now and it’s really getting cold here. It’s starting to snow. The sun’s almost gone and I can hardly see the goal. Now it’s dark and I’m sitting here all alone. Well I guess it’s time to say goodbye and move on.

That said, the many thousands in attendance are still able to relax in the beautiful Eastnor deer park and listen to plenty of music that would otherwise pass them by.

The toothbrush will also be able to talk to other applications on your phone, so developers could, for instance, create a game controlled by your toothbrush.

C. You can brush with the Kolibree as if guided by a dentist.
D You’d like a dentist to watch you brush your teeth every day.

A. It can be used to update mobile phones.
B. It can be used to play mobile phone games

A. How Serval found out his kids lied to him.
B. Why Serval thought brushing teeth was necessary.
C. How Serval taught his kids to brush their teeth.

54. What can we infer about Serval’s children?

Well, I guess it’s time to say goodbye and move on.

Yours sincerely,
Li Jin
【答案】Dear Editor,
I’m writing to share my opinions about trying to save both natural resources and the environment.
Saving is very important because natural resources in our world may run out one day, so we should save some for the later enerations. Meanwhile, saving can help us avoid producing waste, which will make our homeland more beautiful. As students, we should make contributions to saving resources and protecting our environment. For example, we can recycle our textbooks or use both sides of our exercise books. In this way, more trees would be saved. What’s more, we Chinese have a good tradition of saving and regard wasting as a shame, so we call on everybody’s action to do what we can to make our beautiful life last forever.
Best wishes!
Yours sincerely,
Li Jin
