Sophie became friends with the gray squirrels during her first week at Penn State, after spotting them running around and wondering what they would look like with tiny hats on their heads. Today, everyone at the university knows her as the “Squirrel Girl”.
Sophie tried bringing them food, and gradually they began to trust her. She managed to put a hat on a squirrel and take a picture. Thinking that her colleagues could do something to lift their spirits, she started posting similar photos on Facebook. The response was greatly positive, and before long Sophie and her squirrels became an Internet sensation (轰动).
Growing up in a neighborhood outside of State College, Sophie was always fond of birds and animals around her home, but she didn’t interact with people very much. She was later diagnosed (诊断) with Asperger's syndrome, but the squirrels changed that. “The squirrels help me break the ice, because I’ll be sitting here patting a squirrel and other people will come over and well just start like feeding the squirrels together and chatting about them,” she said, “I am a lot more outgoing.”
And in case you’re wondering how Sophie is able to get the squirrels to do what she wants for her photos, it has a lot to do with food. For example, whenever she wants them to hold or play with something, she puts peanut butter on the prop (道具), and they’ll grab it. In the beginning, she would throw peanuts up the trees on campus and invite the squirrels to come down and get them, but they hesitated to approach her. She had the patience to earn their trust, though.
This year, Sophie is graduating with a degree in English and wildlife sciences. She wants to be a science writer and educate people on how to preserve the environment. As for her furry friends, Sophie plans to stay in the area and visit them as often as she can.
24. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Sophie was fonder of squirrels than any other animals.
B. Sophie is known as the “Squirrel Girl” in the community.
C. Sophie and squirrels received great attention on the Internet.
D. Sophie wishes to educate people on how to protect the animals.
25. What can we learn about Sophie according to paragraph 3?
A. She was more outgoing than before.
B. She got lots of friends due to squirrels.
C She lived in the far countryside when young.
D She used to be a popular girl in her childhood.
26. How did Sophie manage to take photos of squirrels wearing hats?
A. By dressing like squirrels. B. By putting them in cages.
C. By playing music to them. D. By attracting them with food.
27. What do you think of Sophie?
A. Patient and caring. B. Tolerant and strong.
C. Sociable and healthy. D. Traditional and hard-working.

Deep Sea: To Mine Or Not To Mine
A robot as large as a truck moves along the bottom of the deep sea. It eats metallic (含金属的) rock and soft mud. They travel up a long pipe to a ship, where workers and machinery separate out the rock and throw the mud back into the ocean. This is a mining operation. The rock contains a mixture of metals, including ones called rare earth metals. People use these materials to make batteries and electronics like computers and phones.
Deep-sea mining hasn’t happened yet. But it probably will occur within the next decade. No country owns any part of the deep sea, so a UN organization called the International Seabed Authority (ISA) decides who is allowed to mine there. It has allowed 29 organizations to explore the deep sea and make plans for mining, one of which plans to begin mining in the year 2027.
Scientists and environmentalists, though, warn that mining could destroy deep-sea ecosystem. In 1989, ecologist Hjalmar Thiel carried out a test. His team searched the seafloor of the Pacific Ocean, in a spot with lots of the metallic rocks that miners wanted. They didn’t actually collect any of the rocks. But they disturbed the mud, just as a mining operation would. The cloud of mud fell back down over the ocean floor burying creatures living there. Up to now, the area they disturbed has not recovered. Signs of the search are still there. Deep sea creatures like sponges and corals have not moved back in. That means mining could have harmful, long-lasting consequences for deep ocean life. Scientists want to understand the deep sea better before disturbing it.
Leaving the deep sea alone sounds great, but people need those metals. “Mines on land are soon going to run out,” geologist Steven Scolt of the University of Toronto told Smithsonian Magazine. “Every electronic device in the world has rare earth metals in it... we need raw resources.” New energy technologies including solar and wind power and electric cars rely on these metals as well. We may need to mine them from the sea in order to switch to greener energy sources.
28. According to the passage, why do people want to carry out deep sea mining?
A. To test the mining robot. B. To collect rare earth metals.
C. To separate the rock from mud. D. To understand the deep sea better.
29. What can we infer from the test of Hjalmar Thiel in 1989?
A. They gathered some metallic rocks the miners wanted.
B. They helped the recovery of the disturbed mining areas.
C. They discovered the deep-sea mining affected the ocean ecology.
D. They found the rare metallic rocks were harmful to sea creatures.
30. What is Steven Scolt’s attitude towards deep-sea mining?
A. Doubtful. B. Neutral. C. Supportive. D. Disapproving.
D
Few would question that arts, in its massive forms and media, are like a mirror that reflects the social, cultural, economic or even political situation of a society of a particular era. However, beyond being simply an illustration of the human condition, arts can be vital in pushing the country forward culturally and economically.
Without doubt, arts are important for the progress of society. They enable individuals to develop on the whole and deepen the social ties in communities by gathering people to create, experience and enjoy art together, which can be seen from traditional ethnic dances to interactive theatre performanccs. Beyond material wants and needs, human beings find fulfilment in experiencing and expressing things of remarkable value through arts. Meanwhile, strong citizens’ participation in arts also strengthens the social fabric of a nation.
Moreover, arts enable a nation to progress in human rights and values. As powerful media that are able to stir hearts and cause reflection, arts can speak up the human voice of criticism sharply and clearly in times of crisis, and call upon society to seek the common good. It is evident that arts, which express human values and emotions, can constitute a profound way of promoting human dignity and additionally, form the barrier of the ethical and moral life of society.
More often than not, a booming arts scene may not narrow the rich-poor divide. It’s not hard to see that in a highly competitive world, it is essential for governments to prioritize the development of a strong workforce and the building of sustainable industries. However, arts may well complement (补充) economic policies as arts encourage individuals to exercise creativity. As Albert Einstein stated, imagination is more important than knowledge. While knowledge and professional skills may stimulate a country’s development, the ability to innovate and think out of the box may be valuable to a society facing ever new and unpredictable challenges.
While the importance of arts may differ from country to country, depending on its economic circumstances and the socio-political issues, the importance of arts to the progress of a nation should not be overlooked.
31. What’s the first paragraph mainly about?
A. The forms of arts.
B. The functions of arts.
C. The definition of arts.
D. The development of arts.
32. How do arts influence human rights and values?
A. By reflecting humans’ views.
B. By pointing out the common good.
C. By giving people a sense of fulfilment.
D. By forming the moral standard of society.
33. Why is Albert Einstein mentioned in paragraph 4?
A. To praise Albert Einstein’s achievements.
B. To call on humans to remember our history.
C. To stress the importance of arts in creativity.
D. To show the necessity of knowledge and skills.
34. What will the author probably agree with?
A. Arts serve as the major influence in values.
B. Arts play a part in the progress of a country.
C. Arts should aim at strengthening social bonds.
D. Arts can bridge the gap between rich and poor.

根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
When you go to concerts, you expect your favorite musician to perform amazingly on stage. But you may have noticed something curious that most musicians don’t just play with their fingers. They also involve body movements that fit the song’s beat or dance following the music. ____35____ The facial expressions musicians show when playing may seem strange or crazy to an outsider, but all that pulling faces might actually serve a purpose.
Firstly, playing a musical instrument usually requires intense focus and concentration. ____36____ Their facial expressions can be a demonstration of the intense emotions and physical effort that go hand-in-hand with musical performance. They’re often subconscious-in fact, many of us will pull strange faces when we’re deeply involved in an activity we care about.
____37____Musicians have a strong emotional connection with the music they perform. They often use their facial expressions to express the mood and interpretation of the music, which creates a more engaging musical experience. While facial expressions may not directly make someone a better musician, they might contribute to the overall artistry of the music.
Performing live music is a rather stressful experience, so it could be that the performer is expressing those nerves through their face-biting the bottom lip, for example. Luckily, nerves will often go away soon after a musician starts performing. ____38____
The facial expressions obviously to some extent express the performer’s inner world. Another interesting thing is that making facial expressions can have a physiological impact on the musician’s performance. Some research suggests that certain facial movements can activate specific muscles and improve muscle harmonization. ____39____However, it’s important to note that this relationship is still not well understood, and the extent to which facial expressions directly impact musical competence is a subject of ongoing investigation.
A. When you’re really focused, you don’t care about the outside world.
B. Among them the part of the body that best exhibits this is obviously the face.
C. They likely won’t be the main cause for those strange faces throughout a performance.
D. Such effects are particularly helpful in controlling muscles when playing an instrument.
E. Facial expressions can also help musicians communicate emotions and artistic expression.
F. Musicians are often overcome with emotion from the music itself or the reaction of the crowd.
G. Musicians often enter a state of “flow”, where they become completely absorbed in the music they’re creating.

Liberal Arts’ Hidden Value
If you have to pick one, who do you think made greater contributions to the world: physicist Isaac Newton or philosopher Aristotle?
Chances are that you’d find it hard to make a decision. But when choosing a major in college, the line between the two areas couldn’t be clearer. Science majors, such as technology, engineering, math, are considered to be more practical choices because of the wealth of opportunities, while those who choose a liberal arts (文科) major—language, music, philosophy—may have more difficulty finding a job.
But perhaps we should look at liberal arts studies in another way to understand its value. In the documentary Civilizations, for example, presenters (主持人) take us to 31 countries to appreciate human creativity, such as the Great Wall and the Pyramids. To Simon Schama, one of the presenters, human civilization isn’t just about technology, but about liberal arts or creating things to leave a person’s mark of their existence for future humans to witness and admire.
By comparing science and liberal arts, we’re drawing “an artificial line” between the two, said Loretta Jackson, an associate professor at Rhodes College in Memphis, US. And to some of the greatest innovators (革新者) in history, this line never existed. Leonardo da Vinci, for example, was an outstanding scientist and painter. He was so interested in biology and anatomy (解剖学) that he drew the famous Vitruvian Man, which perfectly shows proportions (比例) of the human body. Then there’s Steve Jobs, who is an engineer and also an artist. He summarized the relationship between science and arts: “It’s in Apple’s DNA that technology alone is not enough—it’s technology married with liberal arts that brings us what makes our heart sing.”
40. Why is science more attractive when students choose a major in college?
41. According to Simon Schama, what is the value of liberal arts in human civilization?
42. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
►Steve Jobs concluded that technology contributed to Apple’s success, but liberal arts played a more important role.
43. What major will you choose in college? Explain your reasons. (In about 40 words)

I was not originally attracted to nature. For me, nature was associated with the few minutes playing soccer in the nicely cut grass. But in Michigan, nature ___18___ (present) itself in many forms such as sledding as fast as you can down the hill or swimming in one of the five great lakes. These experiences encouraged me ___19___ (explore) one of the raw forms of connecting with nature: camping. Although I ___20___ (spend) a lot of time outside, I had never camped or experienced all of what nature offers.
【答案】18. presents
19. to explore
20. had spent

C. She lived in the far countryside when young.
D. She used to be a popular girl in her childhood.
26. How did Sophie manage to take photos of squirrels wearing hats?
A. By dressing like squirrels. B. By putting them in cages.
C. By playing music to them. D. By attracting them with food.
27. What do you think of Sophie?
A. Patient and caring. B. Tolerant and strong.
C. Sociable and healthy. D. Traditional and hard-working.
【答案】24. C 25. A 26. D 27. A

Few would question that arts in its massive forms and media, are like a mirror that reflects the social, cultural, economic or even political situation of a society of a particular era.
【答案】31. B 32. D 33. C 34. B

【答案】35. B 36. G 37. E 38. C 39. D

【答案】40. Because it offers many opportunities.
41. The value of liberal arts in human civilization lies in the fact that it leaves a person’s mark of their existence for future humans to witness and admire.
42. Steve Jobs concluded that technology contributed to Apple’s success, but liberal arts played a more important role.
43. I will choose science majors in college, because it offers many opportunities and enables me to find a good job after graduation. If I choose liberal arts majors, it is possible that I won’t find jobs.
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇议论文,主要论述的是人文学科的潜在价值。

细节理解题。根据第二段的“Science majors, such as technology, engineering, math, are considered to be more practical choices because of the wealth of opportunities(科学专业,如技术、工程、数学,被认为是更实际的选择,因为机会丰富)”可知,学生在大学选择专业时,科学更有吸引力是因为它提供了很多机会,即Because it offers many opportunities。故答案为Because it offers many opportunities。
【41题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段的“To Simon Schama, one of the presenters, human civilization isn’t just about technology, but about liberal arts or creating things to leave a person’s mark of their existence for future humans to witness and admire.(对主持人之一Simon Schama来说,人类文明不仅与技术有关,还与人文艺术或创造东西有关,这些东西能留下一个人的存在印记,供未来的人类见证和欣赏)”可知,西蒙·沙玛认为,人文学科在人类文明中的价值是这些东西能留下一个人的存在印记,供未来的人类见证和欣赏,答案为“The value of liberal arts in human civilization lies in the fact that it leaves a person’s mark of their existence for future humans to witness and admire”,故答案为The value of liberal arts in human civilization lies in the fact that it leaves a person’s mark of their existence for future humans to witness and admire。
【42题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段的“It’s in Apple’s DNA that technology alone is not enough—it’s technology married with liberal arts that brings us what makes our heart sing.(在苹果的DNA中,只有技术是不够的,只有技术与人文艺术结合,才能让我们的心歌唱)”可知,Steve Jobs的意思是技术和人文艺术要结合,而没有说谁比谁更重要,因此错误的部分是“played a more important role”。故答案为Steve Jobs concluded that technology contributed to Apple’s success, but liberal arts played a more important role。
【43题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是第二段的“Science majors, such as technology, engineering, math, are considered to be more practical choices because of the wealth of opportunities, while those who choose a liberal arts (文科) major—language, music, philosophy—may have more difficulty finding a job.(科学专业,如技术、工程、数学,被认为是更实际的选择,因为机会丰富,而那些选择文科专业(语言、音乐、哲学)的人可能更难找到工作)”及个人想法可知,在大学我会选择科学专业,因为它提供了很多机会,能让我在毕业后找到一份好工作。如果我选择文科专业,有可能找不到工作,故答案为I will choose science majors in college, because it offers many opportunities and enables me to find a good job after graduation. If I choose liberal arts majors, it is possible that I won’t find jobs。
