Los Angeles is great, but sometimes you need a change. If you only have one day to spare, consider one of these quick day trips from Los Angeles to some amazing nearby destinations.
Palm Springs
If you want to exercise, check out the Indian Canyons that offer hiking trails (路线) and different attractive views. If relaxation is your goal, shop at the stores in Cabazon, or just sit by the pool. You can see works of famous artists including Picasso and Warhol in the Palm Spring Art Museum but the works are not for sale.
Solana Beach
It’s easy to get there from L. A. by train. And it’s a perfect way to day-trip because all the places are within walking distance of the station. Head down to the beach at Fletcher Cover or walk along the Cedros Design District for window shopping.
Balboa Island
Visitors can enter the man-made island by car, but it’s far easier and more fun to park your car on the Balboa Peninsula and take the boat for a quick trip across the water. Walk along Marine Avenue, the island’s main street. Here you’ll find plenty of restaurants, gift shops, and you can learn some local history in Island Museum.
San Juan Capistrano
A piece of California history and an old town make San Juan Capistrano an unusual day-trip destination with a lot of beauty and a little learning. If you have your heart set on getting up close with some animals, pay a visit to Petting Zoo. You can also learn some local history in the museum, which is perfect for a walking tour.

The World’s oldest pen pals have both turned 100 after 84 years of transatlantic (跨大洋) letters.
Geoff Banks from Honiton, Devon, UK and Celesta Byrne, from the US, started to write to each other when they were just 16 in 1938. They met as part of an educational project to put British and American students in contact and 84 years later they still keep contacting.
Geoff once was a retired engineer. He said, “I can’t quite remember how we could get in touch, but I was talking to Celesta recently. And I think it was something to do with an American school’s plan. The plan matched us up with Americans for a pen pal relationship and somehow I ended up with this letter from an American girl, and we just kept contacting ever since. There were a couple of years when we tried very hard to keep in touch because of the war. Now of course she is poorly sighted, so I contact mainly by email to one of her daughters who lives nearby. Email is much easier for me these days too, because I can’t write very well anymore. In the email, we just talk about our daily lives and our own families. She’s always been there to write to. even if it was just birthday cards and Christmas cards.”
Though they have chatted for over 80 years, the pair has only ever met twice — their first meeting in 2002 while Geoff visited New York, and then two years later. Nowadays, Geoff is a great grandfather. He lives a happy life. He has three sons who settles across the world and many more grandchildren. “I have this new thing called Zoom. I think now it’s time to chat with her, but I leave all the technology to younger people. They’re much better at pressing all the buttons”.
4. What may bring Geoff and Celesta to be pen pals?
A. An American school’s plan. B. Geoff’s visit to New York.
C. The world war. D. Communication technology.
5. Why did Geoff use email to write letters later?
A. Because he relied on Zoom to chat. B. Because he suffered from eye disease.
C Because he was unable to write well. D. Because writing is too boring for him.
6. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Pen pals are true friends. B. True friendship survives time and space.
C. Letters were not allowed during the war. D. Technology builds friendship.
7. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. A Zoom: a new technology to chat. B. A great way to keep in touch.
C. Importance of being pen pals. D. Oldest pen pals in the world.
C
One million species face extinction, more than ever before in human history, according to a UN report released in May. And humans should be responsible.
The researchers based the assessment (评估) on some 15,000 sources considering the causes and results of environmental changes over the past 50 years.
The findings are clear and alarming. The researchers have found that about 25 percent of the world’s plants and animals are at risk of extinction. These include sea and land animals. Even the domesticated (驯养的) animals are at risk: Over 9 percent of the domesticated animal species used for food and agriculture might have been lost.
There are some big problems. This rapid decrease of the natural world endangers global food safety and quality of life. For example, about 4 billion people rely on natural medicines, produced by the disappearing species, for their health care.
The researchers identified five drivers responsible for the bad news. They think at the top of the list is the change of land and sea use. The change in ecosystems towards agriculture, aquaculture and other human developments has led to changes in the natural living space of species. It is followed by the direct overuse of creatures (harvesting crops, cutting down the trees, hunting and fishing) and climate change, including rising sea levels and increasing extreme-weather events, wildfires, floods and droughts. The final causes of species extinction are pollution, especially plastics, and the spread of non-native species that can kill native plants and animals. In fact, good ecosystems can promote the growth of species.
The researchers say it is time for humans to act. They think maybe a new global way to save food and refuse waste in our life can turn the tables. Whether that is possible is an open question.
8. What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To introduce the topic of the text. B. To introduce the schedule of the report.
C. To introduce humans’ sense of responsibility. D. To introduce the history of human development.
9. What does paragraph 3 mainly show?
A. The reliability of the findings. B. The species of animals worldwide.
C. The seriousness of species’ reduction. D. The risky experiences of the researchers.
10. Which word best describes the relationship between species and ecosystems?
A. Narrow. B. Interdependent. C. Competitive. D. Unrelated.
11. What does the underlined phrase “turn the tables” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Change the situations. B. Ask the open questions.
C. Pollute the environments. D. Turn the tables upside and down.
D
The cultures of the East and the West are really different from each other a lot. This is because the culture systems are two separate ones on the whole.
The origin of the Eastern culture is mainly from two countries: China and India. Both of the two cultures are developed by rivers — the Yellow River in China and the Hindu River in India. They helped the two cultures develop for centuries and form their own styles.
When the two mother rivers gave birth to the Eastern culture, another famous culture was up on the Mesopotamian Plain — the Mesopotamian Civilization. This civilization later on developed into the cultures of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. And these two are well-known as the base of the European culture. Like the Chinese culture, the European culture also crossed waters. When the British settled down in America, their culture went with them over the Atlantic Ocean. So the American culture doesn’t have much difference from the European culture.
At the same time, some other differences add to the cultural differences. Take the language system for example. In the East, most languages belong to the pictographic (象形) language while the western languages are mostly based on the Latin system. Other causes like human race differences count as well. But what’s more, due to the far distance and the steep areas between the East and the west, the two cultures seldom communicate until recent centuries. So they grew up totally in their own ways with almost no interference (干扰) from the other.
The differences are everywhere. They are obvious and make people’s ways of thinking and their views of the world different. But different cultures make the world of 21st century more colorful. The cultural difference should not be the obstacle to the civilization of human being. It ought to be the driving force of our going farther.
12. What is the text mainly about?
A. The origin of cultures. B. Culture differences.
C. Language systems. D. Colorful world.
13. Why is the American culture similar to the European culture?
A. Both of the two cultures have a very long history.
B. They have the same mother rivers as the Chinese culture.
C. The early settlers from Britain brought their culture to America.
D. Both the British and the American live along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean.
14. What’s one of the reason why the east and west cultures seldom communicate until recent centuries?
A. People ate different kinds of food. B. The east and west people don’t like each other.
C. The East and the West are too far away. D. People’s habits and traditions are similar.
15. What’s the author’s attitude to the cultural differences between the East and the West?
A. Cautious. B. Positive. C. Neutral. D. Critical.

Tens of thousands of nature lovers see black bears and grizzly bears each year____16____But for the unfortunate few, bear encounters can lead to serious injury or death. If you come upon a bear in its natural setting, your first reaction may be to feel frightened. But staying safe depends on acting carefully and calmly.
____17____Some people would suggest running away, but bears can run much faster than humans can. Others say a person should drop to the ground and play dead.____18____It is best to be as educated as possible about different bear behaviors before you head into the wild.
If a bear is coming towards you, you must first determine if the bear attack is defensive(such as when protecting young bears)or predatory(捕食性的)(such as when hunting).____19____Most grizzly bear attacks are defensive. When a bear is defensive, it is feeling threatened. Dropping to the ground is an effective way to show the bear that you are not a threat.
Black bears do not often challenge humans, but when they do, their attacks are usually predatory. Bears do not feel threatened when they are hunting, so playing dead will not help you stay safe. During a predatory bear attack, the first thing you should do is drop any food you have and back away. If the bear still comes towards you, make as much noise as possible by shouting and hitting objects.____20____. You can also use pepper spray(喷雾)during a bear attack. Always bring it with you in the wild, and have it ready to use without delay.

C. Most walk away with exciting memories and photographs.
D. That turns out to be a hint in some situations but not in others.

In a high school, there was a student named Alex, known for his skills on the basketball court (球场). As the point guard (控球后卫) of the school team, he carried the hopes of his teammates and classmates. One key game could lead them to the regional finals, a stage they hadn’t reached in years. Alex felt the pressure but was determined to lead his team to victory.
On the day of the game, the gym was filled with cheering students and teachers. Alex felt a rush of excitement when he carried the ball across the court. The game was intense (激烈的), with both teams neck and neck. In the final seconds, with the score tied, Alex had the chance to make the winning shot. He took a jump and released the ball, but it missed the goal. The whistle (口哨) blew, and the opposing team caught the chance, scoring a last-second basket. Alex’s team lost.
“How could I have missed scoring that goal? I had let the whole team down,” Alex thought to himself. His stupid mistake made him angry. Sad and depressed, Alex walked back home, replaying the missed shot in his mind. His parents immediately noticed his sadness. “What happened, Alex?” his mother asked. “I messed up the final shot. We lost because of me,” he replied, heading straight to his room, feeling like he had let everyone down.
Later, his father came to his room. “Alex, I watched the game. You played well. It’s not just about one shot. Basketball is a team sport. You win together, and you lose together. Learn from this and grow. Your team needs you.” Alex didn’t say anything, but his father’s words made him think carefully.

I'm Li Hua, studying in Class one, Grade two. Seeing that you are in need of volunteers for environmental protection from your appealing poster , I'm writing to apply for the position.
I'm fully convinced that I possess enough qualifications to be the required volunteer. First of all, I normally participate in a variety of beneficial activities to preserve our environment, which makes me more experienced than others. Besides, I succeeded in organizing a series of rewarding activities, including Saving Water, Green Travel and so on, which equipped me with enough knowledge and experience to be a qualified volunteer. I'd appreciate it if you could take my application into consideration. I'm available for an interview at any time.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】参考范文:
The next day at school, Alex walked to his teammates hesitantly (犹豫的). His teammates were practicing shots. “Guys, I need to say sorry for yesterday. I feel like I let you all down with that missed shot,” Alex said, his voice filled with regret. The team stopped and gathered around him. “Alex, it’s not just on you,” said the team captain, patting him on his shoulder. “We all had moments we could have done better. It’s about the team, not just one person or one shot.”
This response (回复) lifted Alex’s spirits. He realized that his mistake was a part of the game, and it didn’t ruin him or his value to the team. Encouraged by his teammates’ support, he joined in the practice with renewed energy. Together, they focused on their plays, improving their cooperation and encouraging each other. As they left the gym, Alex felt a strong sense of belonging and determination. He knew that together, as a team, they were stronger and ready to face the next challenge.
