Like many new graduates, I left university full of hope for the future but with no real idea of what I wanted to do. My degree, with honors, in English literature had not really prepared me for anything practical. I knew I wanted to make a difference in the world somehow, but I had no idea how to do that. That’s when I learned about the Lighthouse Project.
I started my journey as a Lighthouse Project volunteer by reading as much as I could about the experiences of previous volunteers. I knew it would be a lot of hard work, and that I would be away from my family and friends for a very long time. In short, I did not take my decision to apply for the Lighthouse Project lightly. Neither did my family.
Eventually, however, I won the support of my family, and I sent in all the paperwork needed for application. After countless interviews and presentations, I managed to stand out among the candidates and survive the test alone. Several months later, I finally received a call asking me to report for duty. I would be going to a small village near Abuja, Nigeria. Where? What? Nigeria? I had no idea. But I was about to find out.
After completing my training, I was sent to the village that was small and desperately in need of proper accommodation. Though the local villagers were poor, they offered their homes, food, and hearts as if I were their own family. I was asked to lead a small team of local people in building a new schoolhouse. For the next year or so, I taught in that same schoolhouse. But I sometimes think I learned more from my students than they did from me.
Sometime during that period, I realized that all those things that had seemed so strange or unusual to me no longer did, though I did not get anywhere with the local language, and returned to the United States a different man. The Lighthouse Project had changed my life forever.
24. What do we know about the author?
A. He felt honored to study English literature.
B. He took pride in having contributed to the world.
C. His dream at university was to become a volunteer.
D. His university education focused on theoretical knowledge.
25. How was the writer’s application process?
A. Awkward. B. Entertaining. C. Complicated. D. Effortless.
26. What did the writer do in the village?
A. Helping villagers build hospitals. B. Serving as a teacher.
C. Raising money for his students. D. Inviting locals to enter his Project.
27. Which can be the best title of the text?
A. A Life-changing Voluntary Experience
B. The Memorable and Rewarding life in Abuja
C. Lighthouse Project—The Promise of African Education
D. Lighthouse Project—A Volunteer Organization for New Graduates

Working out for 30 minutes every day “might not be enough” to fight against the health problems created by long time sitting according to a sweeping new study.
The new study, unlike the past ones that examined sitting and formal exercise separately, paying little attention to light activities, involved 3,702 people to find out how those all affected people’s health indices (指数).
With the data collected, researchers characterized people by how they moved. The first group dutifully exercised for a half-hour and then sat, almost nonstop, for more than 10 hours a day. Another group similarly worked out for 30 minutes and sat for long hours. But, in between, they rose often and took walks around, spending time in light activities like fetching another cup of coffee. The third group sat, without any stop, for up to 10 hours, but also collected an hour of exercise most days. The final group, which the researchers named “the movers,” exercised about an hour most days, while also moving lightly for about two hours more.
When the researchers cross-checked these groups against people’s current health data, the first group had the worst indices. Different from the first group, the other groups were all better off and to about the same extent, with relatively improved blood sugar control and cholesterol (胆固醇) levels and about 8 percent less body fat than the first group.
“A single 30-minute, daily workout ‘might not be enough’ to reduce the bad effects of longtime sitting,” said Vahid Farrahi, the lead author of the new study. “In addition to a brisk (轻快的) workout, we need to move lightly and often, cleaning, taking the stairs, taking a walk in the halls or just not remaining still.”
28. How is the new study different from the previous ones?
A. It examined sitting and exercise separately.
B. It proved that light activities were ignored.
C. It took light activities into consideration.
D. It suggested working out for a half-hour.
29. What do we learn from Paragraph 3 and 4?
A. The first group spent one hour on light activities after long sitting.
B. The second group got similar improved health indices as the movers.
C. The third group collected an hour’s exercise during 10 hours’ sitting.
D. The movers got up every 30 minutes for formal exercise for four hours.
30. What light activity is suggested to take in the last paragraph?
A. Reading while sitting. B. Swimming in the pool.
C. Working out in the gym. D. Walking in the gym hall.
31. What can we infer from Vahid’s words?
A. Working out harder and longer is better than just moving lightly.
B. It’s better to exercise more often than half an hour every day.
C. Moving lightly and often is more useful than we have thought.
D. A 30-minute workout has little help for long time sitting problems.

With the rapid development of artificial intelligence, DeepSeek, a Chinese AI company, has established itself as a pioneer in educational technology. Its latest model, DeepSeek-R1, combines advanced machine learning methods to provide personalized learning solutions for students worldwide.
Unlike traditional AI models that rely on pre-programmed answers, DeepSeekR1 uses reinforcement (强化) learning to simulate human reasoning. This allows it to guide students through problem-solving step by step, much like a patient tutor. For example, when a student struggles with a math equation, DeepSeek-R1 doesn’t just give the answer; it breaks down the logic, identifies errors, and encourages critical thinking.
The model’ s applications extend beyond academics. In language learning, it analyzes students’ pronunciation through AI speech recognition and offers real-time feedback. For teachers, DeepSeek-R1 can generate lesson plans aligned with curriculum standards and even predict students’ learning difficulties based on historical data. Its “adaptive testing” feature creates customized quizzes that adjust difficulty according to individual progress.
However, challenges remain. Critics argue that over-reliance on AI might reduce human interaction in education. DeepSeek’s developers address this by emphasizing its role as a “supplement, not a replacement.” As Dr. Li, a DeepSeek researcher, stated, “Our goal is to free teachers from repetitive tasks so they can focus on inspiring creativity.”
Looking ahead, DeepSeek aims to integrate virtual reality (VR) into its platform, allowing students to explore historical events or scientific concepts in immersive 3D environments. While ethical debates about AI in education persist, one thing is clear: tools like DeepSeek are reshaping how we learn, blending technology with human wisdom.
32. What makes DeepSeek-R1 different from traditional AI models?
A. It uses pre-programmed answers.
B It focuses on memorization techniques.
C. It replaces teachers in classrooms.
D. It employs reinforcement learning for reasoning.
33. The underlined word “customized” in Paragraph 3 most likely means ______.
A. fixed B. tailored C. complicated D. randomized
34. What can be inferred about DeepSeek’s future plans?
A. VR technology will strengthen interactive learning.
B. It will remove all classroom activities.
C. It prioritizes profit over moral discussions.
D. Teachers will lose their jobs to AI.
35. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To advertise DeepSeek products.
B. To criticize the risks of AI in schools.
C. To discuss AI’s role in transforming education.
D. To compare different AI models.

There are about 22,000 public charging ports nationwide, a number that is expected to be more than three times by 2023. But for most EV owners, charging at home is the way to go. ____39____
The average EV gets about 250 miles from a full charge, which is far less than the distance most gas-powered cars can go on a full tank. But EVs are catching up. Tesla comes the closest. Its newer 2021 version gets closer to 500. ____40____ BMW makes a fast-charging system that adds about 60 miles of drive time in about six minutes.

72. 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Helen! Are you coming?” a voice from downstairs. “Yes!” Helen replied, quickly putting on her slightly tight dress. “Where are we going, Dad?” she asked, surprised by this rare opportunity to spend time with her father. He had been working tirelessly to support the family.
“We’re off to collect the rent,” he responded. “Oh,” she understood. The rent was their lifeline during the Great Depression, and going without it was unthinkable.
Their first stop was Mrs. Miller’s, who quickly handed them the rent in dollar bills, but the second tenant(租客)Mr. Schmidt was still searching his home for coins when they arrived. Apologizing, he gave them a bag of coins.
But the third tenants the Katzes, worried Helen and her father. Their financial struggles had worsened, even though her father had reduced their rent. Her father said it was important to be especially good to this family because Mr. Katz had served in the army in the Great War and deserved their gratitude.
Mrs. Katz greeted them at the door, her eyes red from crying. Despite their financial difficulties, the inside of the apartment was always beautifully clean. Mr. Katz and the two children were sitting at a table, waiting for Mr. Resnick. They all had such thin faces! Helen was embarrassed, suddenly, by her own round cheeks and strong body. They felt like marks of her guilt when she saw the little girl’s narrow, sad face and the boy’s big eyes.
Mr. Katz gave Helen’s father the money he was holding, and her father thanked him. Just as they were about to leave, Mrs. Katz’s trembling voice stopped them. She said, “Mr. Resnick, we haven’t eaten in two days.” Helen couldn’t imagine such a thing. Her stomach ached just to think of it.
They returned to the table, and Helen’s father silently placed the Katzes’ rent money back on it and counted out two dollars in coins. “Helen,” he said, “I want you to go to the grocer’s with this money, buy food, and bring it back here.”

M: We have our fish, our meat, our wines, our fruit…
W: I mean what is popular about Belgian food?
M: Well, it’s a bit different in Belgium as I think it is here in New York. We really enjoy the tables. We don’t go out for dinner that often but when we go out we stay at a table for three or four hours. It starts with appetizers, then it may be a soup, then it’s the main dish, then it’s still an ice-cream or something.
W: It takes so much time to have dinner in your country!
M: Yeah. We really enjoy eating and it goes slow. Last winter, a friend from Portugal went to Belgium with me. For Christmas dinner, we met at 5:30 and then we started with some drinks. I think we ate from 6 o’clock in the afternoon till 12 o’clock that night.
W: Wow! You must be fat there if you eat that much.
M: In fact we don’t. We don’t do it that often, but if we do, then of course the next day or the next few days you see people just don’t eat much.

B He took pride in having contributed to the world.
C. His dream at university was to become a volunteer.
D. His university education focused on theoretical knowledge.
25. How was the writer’s application process?
A. Awkward. B. Entertaining. C. Complicated. D. Effortless.
26. What did the writer do in the village?
A. Helping villagers build hospitals. B. Serving as a teacher.
C. Raising money for his students. D. Inviting locals to enter his Project.
27. Which can be the best title of the text?
A. A Life-changing Voluntary Experience
B. The Memorable and Rewarding life in Abuja
C. Lighthouse Project—The Promise of African Education
D. Lighthouse Project—A Volunteer Organization for New Graduates
【答案】24. D 25. C 26. B 27. A

Working out for 30 minutes every day “might not be enough” to fight against the health problems created by long time sitting, according to a sweeping new study.
【答案】28. C 29. B 30. D 31. C
【解析】

B. It focuses on memorization techniques.
【答案】32. D 33. B 34. A 35. C

But the third tenants, the Katzes, worried Helen and her father.
注意:

【答案】Helen nodded, took the money, and rushed off to the grocer’s. The tragic scene of the Katzes constantly crowded in her mind, and Helen's tears unconsciously rolled down her cheeks. She must go to the store as quickly as possible to buy food that can wrap their stomachs. Katzes' family didn't eaten for two days, which was something Helen had never imagined before. What a great ordeal it was. But how can only two coins buy enough food for the Katzes family? With a moment of thinking, Helen ran back home quickly to get her fifty coins in the piggy bank unhesitatingly. Then she rode her tricycle to go to the grocer and bought a cart full of food and daily necessities.
Everyone’s eyes turned to her as she entered the Katzes’ house, and her father smiled. After moving these items to Katzes’ house, Helen handed Mrs. Katzes the remaining coins and the two coins given by her father. Seeing Helen sweating profusely and the tricycle filled a table full of food, Dad saw that Helen was a person with determination, kindness, generosity and the power of execution. The significance of collecting rent with Helen far exceeded the rent.
