These exciting trips give you the chance to enjoy a really unusual view of the countryside. For a successful flight, we need light winds. It's also important that there is no rain and we have a clear sky. If there are too many clouds will cancel the flight and your trip will be arranged for another date. The temperature in the air is similar to that on the ground, so you should wear a casual outdoor clothes. Also, you should remember to wear boots. This is because you may need to walk through wet and muddy fields at the end of the trip. All our flights take place in the evening, and departure time depends on when the sun sets. The season starts in march and in may, for example, flights would be at six pm. The last flights are in october, and after that we close for the winter. If you would like to book a flight or receive more information about hot air balloons, just feel free to call us. IT will be a trip you will never forget. Making College Affordable
Studying in the United States can be a transformative experience. However, for many students, the cost of US education can be a major concern. Here’s how to find affordable US colleges and universities and some strategies to reduce costs.
Research tuition rates at public universities
One of the most cost-effective ways to study in the US is to look at public universities. Public institutions, particularly state universities, often have lower tuition rates compared to private colleges. When exploring options, compare tuition rates on university websites, focusing on those known for affordability, such as the State University of New York (SUNY) system or the California State University (CSU) system.
Consider community colleges and the 2+2 program
In this approach, students spend the first two years at a community college and then transfer to a four-year university to complete their bachelor’s degree. Community colleges have significantly lower tuition fees, often less than half of what a four-year university charge. By attending a community college first, students can save thousands of dollars.
Look for scholarships for international students
Many US colleges offer scholarships specifically for international students. These scholarships can cover part of tuition, sometimes even full tuition. When researching schools, check their “International Student Financial Aid” or “Scholarships” sections. Applying for these can help reduce financial stress, but be mindful of deadlines and requirements as they vary widely.
Choose schools in regions with lower living costs
The cost of living can vary significantly between US cities and regions. For instance, living expenses are generally lower in the Midwest and the Southern US compared to coastal areas like California and New York. When looking at affordable education, consider schools in states like Ohio, Kansas and Alabama, where rent, food and transportation costs are often lower.
21. Who is the passage intended for?
A. Colleges with overseas students.
B. Students who consider studying abroad.
C. Parents who have elementary school students.
D. Teachers who guide students career planning.
22. What should the international students be aware of?
A. The tuition rates of private colleges.
B. The locations of community colleges
C. The variety of living conditions in the USA.
D. The differences between colleges in scholarship application.
23. What makes the state, Ohio, a preference for studying in the USA?
A. Its good weather. B. Its living costs.
C. Its long history. D. Its delicious food.
B
I was at the grocery shop picking up last-minute items for Easter dinner when I spotted from the corner of my eye the most wonderful flower I had ever seen. It was, as I later learned, a peony(牡丹).
“They’re so beautiful, aren’t they?” said the cashier.
“Yes,” I replied, pleased that I was going to buy myself flowers. I’d never done this before. On the way home, I wondered why I had never really been drawn to any flowers before. After all, I’d been on this earth for over half a century.
Growing up in England, my immigrant(移民)family viewed flowers as unnecessary since survival was our priority. Dad worked on the railways, and Mom, before her illness, worked in a factory. Our small garden was filled with vegetables instead of flowers, as Mom and Dad often said, “These will keep us alive if we can’t get them from the shop.”
We also built an underground oven, where Mom and Dad would make flatbread the way they had made it back home. The smell of this flatbread comforted us and make us take root in England.
When Mother’s Day came, Mom would say, “Why waste money on flowers? They’ll just die. Buy shoes or coats instead.” So, we kids made food for her at home.
My mother passed away years ago after a long illness. If she were still alive today, she’d probably shake her head at me for buying flowers. But still, I wish I’d had the chance to show her this beautiful flower and buy it for her on Mother’s Day.
“Look, Mom,” I say aloud. “I bought myself a peony. Thank you for giving up your home and life to come to this country so that I could have opportunities that you never had, and so I could give myself these unnecessary but beautiful flowers.”
24. Why did the author buy herself flowers on earth?
A. She bought flowers for fun. B. She wanted to celebrate Easter.
C. She wanted to please the cashier. D. She decided to treat herself with flowers.
25. What did the vegetable garden mean to the author’s parents?
A. Beauty. B. Survival. C. Hometown. D. Gift.
26. How did the author’s mother feel about buying flowers for Mother’s Day?
A. It was unnecessary. B. It was uncommon.
C. It was beyond imagination. D. It was out of fashion.
27. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. Life is full of regrets.
B. She should have bought flowers earlier.
C. What her mother did deserves her appreciation.
D. Opportunities are gone and never come back.

Many think that language is what sets humans apart from other animals, and believe that to think, we need language. British philosopher Bertrand Russell even reported in 1948 that no intelligent thinking can take place without language. However, a recent Nature study suggests otherwise. It found that language and thought are two distinct entities (实体), working in separate parts of the brain. They are, in short, “far more independent than we imagined”, wrote ZME Science.
The study, conducted by scientists from the US, explored the language-thought relationship, using two research methods. First, they studied people with global aphasia (全失语症), who have lost much of their ability to understand or speak due to damage to the left side of their brain. However, they can still finish complex tasks. “You can ask people with global aphasia to solve math problems or perform social reasoning tests, and as long as the instructions are non-verbal (非语言的), they can succeed,” Evelina Fedorenko, one of the study’s authors at the US Massachusetts Institute of Technology, told ZME Science.
The researchers also used brain-imaging (脑成像) tools to study the brains of healthy volunteers performing non-verbal tasks, like solving puzzles and planning. They found that the brain’s language areas were mostly inactive during-such activities. In other words, we generally need language to express our thoughts but we can still think without words.
So if language isn’t necessary for thinking, then why did humans develop it? Fedorenko said language serves mainly as a tool for communication. “Among most of the things that you learned about the world, you learned through language and not through direct experience with the world,” she said. By being able to share complex information through language, humans gained an evolutionary advantage.
Although language does not give rise to thoughts, past research shows that how we speak can heavily influence how we think. For example, the English phrase “he fired the gun” is usually understood as “the gun went off” in Japanese. As a result, English speakers are more likely to focus on the person responsible for an accident than Japanese speakers, according to Psychology Today.
28. What does the underlined word “distinct” mean?
A. Different. B. Dependent. C. Exact. D. Similar.
29. What can be learnt about the people with “global aphasia”?
A. They have lost all their ability to talk.
B. They behave inactively during physical activities.
C. They can carry out social reasoning tests following nonverbal directions.
D. They can perform better in solving math problems than healthy people.
30. Why is language needed according to the text?
A. It makes human thinking possible.
B. It benefits people to gain experience.
C. It serves as the only tool for human learning.
D. It enables information to be understood by humans.
31. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. Language shapes the way we think.
B. Humans can think independently of language.
C. Language and thought are completely related.
D. Humans can live without thinking and language.
D
No matter how bright and clear big cities can be, the birds living there might be getting less colorful. A recent study published in the journal Landscape and Planning looked at 547 bird species in China and found that city birds have darker colors than village birds.
Urbanization may have reduced the brightness of their colors. For city birds that look dirty, even if we gave them a good clean, they still wouldn’t be as bright as village birds. This is because pollution, especially heavy metals, can interact with melanin (黑色素)in birds bodies. Melanin is the pigment (色素) that makes feathers black, brown and grey.
Studies showed that melanin can mix with heavy metals like lead in the environment and produce toxic compounds (有毒化合物). These toxic compounds are more likely to be stored in the feathers of birds. Surprisingly, this can give them a survival advantage. Kevin McGraw, a biologist at Michigan State University in the US, told The New York Times, “The more melanin you make, the better able you are to separate these harmful compounds in feathers.” For storing the harmful compounds in their feathers, these birds prevent them from entering their bodies, where they could cause more damage. This is why there are more darker birds in city areas.
Furthermore, city pollution causes city trees to store fewer carotenoids (类胡萝卜素)compared to village plants. Carotenoids are natural pigments that make red peppers red and carrots orange. Just as eating carotenoid-rich carrots can give human skin a little dark, eating carotenoid-rich worms that feed on tree leaves makes birds’ feathers yellow, orange and red.
“Birds cannot produce carotenoids,” German bird expert Kaspar Delhey told The New York Times. “They need to get them from their food.” Without a carotenoid-rich diet, the color of their feathers won’t change. Carotenoids also help birds stay healthy by supporting their immune (免疫的)systems. Therefore, birds that don’t get enough of these pigments might not be as healthy.
The dull colors of city birds are not just about looks; they are a warning sign. “It means that the habitat might be of lower quality,” Delhey said.
32. What do we learn about melanin?
A. It is a heavy metal. B. It does damage to birds.
C. It makes birds appear darker. D. It is a product of city pollution on birds.
33. How do the toxic compounds affect the city birds?
A. They are friendly to birds’ feathers.
B. They have an advantage over melanin.
C. They can’t be prevented in the city bird bodies.
D. They are responsible for more darker birds in cities.
34. What is the correct description of carotenoids?
A. Carotenoids are produced in bird bodies.
B. Carotenoids can serve as immune medicine.
C. Carotenoids store in trees is reduced for city pollution.
D. Carotenoid-rich carrots are necessary food for birds with colorful feathers.
35. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To disclose that city birds have worse living conditions.
B. To explain the reason why birds lack healthy food supplies.
C. To express that city birds depend more on toxic compounds.
D. To stress that city birds have gained advantages over village birds.

Sara was a high school student who was known for her hard work and desire for perfection. Whenever a task was given to her by the teachers, she always wanted to do it perfectly. This sense of responsibility made her a favorite among teachers, but it also placed heavy pressure on her shoulders. She feared making mistakes and would often stress over even the smallest of errors.
One day, a painting competition was announced at the school. Sara eagerly decided to participate in the competition. Painting had always been one of her favorite hobbies, and she loved the idea of competing. The winner would receive a prize, and while that sounded great, Sara was glad to have the chance to prove herself. However, this time painting didn’t feel fun. Each time she picked up her brush, a heavy feeling of anxiety clouded her thoughts. The fear of not being the best in the competition controlled her.
As days passed, it became increasingly difficult for Sara to concentrate. While other participants were making progress, Sara was caught in her thoughts. She couldn’t even decide what to paint. Images of her competitors confidently working on their pieces filled her with a sense of inability. With only two days left before the competition, Sara’s anxiety grew worse. She spent the entire day with negative thoughts, feeling unworthy and untalented.
At school, Sara saw her classmates close to finishing their artwork, their laughter and excitement going sharply against her internal struggles. The pressure to perform perfectly had turned into an intense fear that kept her from even picking up a brush. Sara began to doubt her abilities, believing that she couldn’t finish anything well. She felt lost in a cycle of anxiety, and the joy she once found in painting seemed to fade further away. With each passing moment, she questioned whether she should even participate at all, fearing that failure would only prove her worst beliefs in herself.

【66题答案】
【答案】Dear Li Hua,
I’m glad to hear that you have eventually determined to challenge your public speech limits to share on Ted your ideas into the significance of friendship. Hope the following words may provide practical support.
First, practice constantly and record your performance, through which you can make sure to speak slowly and clearly for your audience to take in your ideas. Second, use personal stories or popular examples to make your message relatable, which can catch your audience’s attention. Third, make eye contact and raise inspiring questions to create a lively atmosphere.
Mistakes won’t be avoided, so just stay confident and concentrated. Wishing you courage and success.
Yours,
Brad Smith
第二节 续写(满分25分)
【67题答案】
【答案】Paragraph 1
Seeing Sara’s trouble, her teacher asked her to come to him and showed her a beautiful glass cup. Sara had never seen such a beautiful glass piece before. But suddenly, the cup slipped from her teacher’s hands and broke into pieces. A wave of sadness spread over her face. Her teacher looked at her face and said softly, “Beauty lies in imperfection and welcoming imperfection is an act of self-love and acceptance.” Then he began repairing the cup with golden glue, making it even more beautiful than before and gave the cup to Sara as a gift.
Paragraph 2:
Looking at the well-repaired cup and reflecting on her teacher’s words, Sara decided to paint without worrying about perfection. As Sara let go of her anxiety, her painting became more beautiful. On the competition day, Sara accidentally spilled water on the painting before submitting it, but instead of panicking, she calmly added raindrops to her artwork, making it even better than before. When the results were announced, Sara won the second prize. She was happy about the result but, more importantly, she learned a valuable lesson: Being perfect all the time isn’t necessary, because beauty lies in imperfection, and accepting small faults makes us human.
