It’s a cold wet afternoon in April.
It’s a perfect (完美的) day for sitting in a warm classroom, sending text messages to friends and looking out of the window. It’s a perfect day for sitting in a warm office, sending emails and surfing the net. It’s a perfect day for looking for new clothes in the warm shopping centre. Or for sitting at home, drinking hot chocolate and watching afternoon TV.
But on the sports field of Westbourne High School, two football teams are running up and down, kicking (踢) a heavy wet football. It’s an important match—the semi-final (半决赛) of the girls’ football championship between Westbourne and New Milton.
THWACK!
The goalkeeper (守门员) kicks the football high into the air.
The team in red shirts run up the field, and the team in blue shirts run back.
A girl in a red shirt with black hair and brown eyes watches the ball carefully. She walks slowly into the centre circle.
BOING!
A girl in a blue shirt heads the ball. It flies up into the grey air.
BIFF!
The ball lands at the feet of the girl with black hair. She immediately (立即) starts running towards the blue team’s goal.
“Go on Zadie!” her teammates (队友) shout.
Zadie runs quickly. The girls from New Milton can’t catch her. But then in front of her, Zadie sees a tall girl in a blue shirt. She’s big. She’s fast. And she’s right in front of her!
But Zadie has an idea. Zadie kicks the ball to the girl’s left, and then runs to the girl’s right.
The tall girl is confused. She looks at the ball, and she looks at Zadie. She doesn’t know which way to move. So Zadie runs past her, and gets the ball on the other side!
Now she has only the goalkeeper to beat (打败).

They travelled along the river. Rat sang a song about ducks. Soon they saw Toad Hall, Toad’s house. It was a lovely old house by the river with beautiful gardens.

“It’s perfect!” said Toad. He opened a cupboard. “Look,” he cried, “food, drink, paper and cards. It’s ready for our journey this afternoon.”
“What?” said Rat. “Our journey and this afternoon?”
“Now, Rat,” said Toad, “please, please come with me! We can see the world—together!”
“No,” said Rat. “I don’t want to see the world. I want to stay on my river. And Mole wants to stay on the river too. Don’t you, Mole?”

Michael turned on the radio. He heard what sounded like human (人类) voices. Almost like human voices, that is.
“Earth is near,” said one voice. “Prepare to meet the humans.”
“Will we take any Earth people home with us?” asked another.
“Yes. Our master commanded (下令) us to bring some back for our experiments (实验).” The radio made a strange sound. Then it became quiet.
Michael noticed some old pictures of aliens on the wall.
“Maybe,” thought Michael, “the voices I heard on the radio were not humans. Maybe they were aliens (外星人)! If they have come here before, maybe they will come here again!”
Michael looked at the pictures again and went on to listen to the radio.

Alice looked all around her at the flowers and the trees, but she could not see anything to eat. Then she saw a large mushroom (蘑菇) near her. It was as tall as she was. She walked across to look at it, and there, on top of the mushroom, was a large caterpillar (毛毛虫). Minutes later, the caterpillar said to Alice in a slow, sleepy voice, “Who are you!”

“I can’t explain myself, sir,” said Alice, “because I’m not myself, you know.”
“I don’t know,” said the caterpillar.
