For as long as she can remember, 13-year-old Lila Hoffa has struggled to express herself in writing. Her handwriting is sometimes messy and disorganized, and she used to have trouble holding a pen. In her first years at school, her teachers didn’t notice that anything was wrong. But that changed when she met her third-grade teacher, Valerie Holmgren.
“She realized that there was something more going on than just typical writing problems,” Lila said. Lila was diagnosed with dysgraphia (被诊断为书写困难) which destroys her ability to write clearly. So her teachers and her parents held a meeting to figure out what to do next.
“We were all sitting around a long table,” Lila recalled. “And Mrs. Holmgren pulled out a computer and opened it to Google Docs, and said that there was this cool thing that she wanted to show me.” Holmgren opened up a speech-to-text program that instantly converts (转换) spoken words into typed text.
For Lila, a creative student and passionate storyteller, it felt like a moment of sudden understanding. “This was just an amazing moment for me because I realized all of the stories and the ideas that I had stuck in my head — there was an easy way to get them down onto paper,” Lila said. “And I just threw my head back and said, ‘I could write a thousand stories.’”
Lila now uses speech-to-text software every day to type up emails, write essays (文章) in class, and of course, write stories. The first story she wrote with the program was called “The Girl Who Couldn’t Stop Reading — AKA Me!”
If Holmgren were standing in front of her today, this is what Lila would say: “Thank you for noticing my potential and noticing that there was so much more to me. You knew that there was so much inside my head that needed to get out.”
34. What is the problem with Lila?
A. She dresses messily.
B. She has a writing disorder.

D. She feels embarrassed to express herself in public.
35. How did Holmgren react to Lila’s behavior?
A. She ignored her problems.
B. She complained to the school.
C. She found a voice recognition solution for Lila.
D. She required Lila’s parents to take her to a special school.
36. What do we know about Lila’s current situation?
A. She has unlocked her creativity.
B. She has published some stories.
C. She has helped others realize their potential
D. She has difficulty using the typing software.
37. What can you learn from the last paragraph?

The elderly residents (居民) in care homes in London are being given hens to look after to stop them feeling lonely.
The project was dreamed up by a local charity (慈善组织) to reduce loneliness and improve elderly people’s wellbeing. It is also being used to help patients suffering dementia, a serious illness of the mind. Staff in care homes have reported a reduction in the use of medicine where hens are in use.
Among those taking part in the project is 80-year-old Ruth Xavier. She said: “I used to keep hens when I was younger and had to prepare their breakfast each morning before I went to school. ”
“I like the project a lot. I am down there in my wheelchair in the morning letting the hens out and down there again at night to see they’ve gone to bed.”
“It’s good to have a different focus. People have been bringing their children in to see the hens and residents come and sit outside to watch them. I’m enjoying the creative activities, and it feels great to have done something useful.”
There are now 700 elderly people looking after hens in 20 care homes in the North East, and the charity has been given financial support to roll it out countrywide.
Wendy Wilson, extra care manager at 60 Penfold Street, one of the first to embark on the project, said: “Residents really welcome the idea of the project and the creative sessions. We are looking forward to the benefits and fun the project can bring to people here.”
Lynn Lewis, director of Notting Hill Pathways, said: “We are happy to be taking part in the project. It will really help connect our residents through a shared interest and creative activities.”
38. What is the purpose of the project?
A. To ensure harmony in care homes. B. To provide part-time jobs for the aged.
C. To raise money for medical research. D. To promote the elderly people’s welfare.
39. How has the project affected Ruth Xavier?
A. She has learned new life skills. B. She has gained a sense of achievement.
C. She has recovered her memory. D. She has developed a strong personality.
40. What do the underlined words “embark on” mean in paragraph 7?
A. Improve. B. Oppose. C. Begin. D. Evaluate.

Global warming threatens to hold back human progress, and make unachievable all UN targets to reduce poverty, according to some of the world’s leading international and development groups.
In a report published today, Oxfam, Greenpeace, Christian Aid, Friends of the Earth, WWF and 15 other groups say wealthy countries must immediately deal with climate change to avoid even “unbearable levels” of worldwide poverty.
“Food production, water supplies, public health and people’s living environment are already being damaged,” the report says. “The world must meet its promise to achieve poverty reduction and also deal with climate change.”
The report, which draws on UN predictions of the effects of climate change in poor countries over the next 50 years, says poor countries will experience more flooding, declining food production, more disease and the worsening or disappearing of entire ecosystems (生态系统) on which many of the world’s poorest people depend.
“Climate change needs to be addressed now. The poor will bear the burden of it. The frontline experience of many of us working in international development indicates that communities are having to fight against more extreme weather conditions.”
Climate change will play havoc (浩劫) with agriculture and water supplies and will increase diseases. “By 2025 the proportion of the world’s population living in countries of great water stress will almost double, to 6 billion people. Tropical and sub-tropical areas will be hardest hit—those countries already suffering from food shortage”.
Poor countries mostly do not need high-tech solutions, but would most benefit from education, research and being shown how to farm better. The report says unchecked global warming, more than wars or political confusion, will displace millions of people and destabilize (不安定) many countries.
42. ______ should play a leading role in fighting against the more extreme weather conditions according to the report.
A. Rich countries B. Poor countries
C. International groups D. Tropical and sub-tropical countries
43. Which of the following is not the effect of global warming according to the report?
A. More natural disasters and starvation.
B. Shaking the foundation (基础) of a country.
C. Increasing the world’s population.
D. Making millions of people move to other places.
44. Which of the following is not true according to the text?
A. Poverty and climate change are closely linked.
B. What the poor countries need badly is high technology.
C. More and more people will suffer from the water stress and food shortage.
D. International communities have to take steps to resist the bad climate.
45. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Worldwide Poverty Shall Be Avoided
B. Global Warming Is a Bigger Threat to Poor
C. International Groups Work Together to Reduce Poverty
D. International Development Brings in Climate Change
【答案】42. A 43. C 44. B 45. B

A Chinese painting is usually thought of as work of ink and water on rice paper. But a new generation of Chinese artists is drawing inspiration from Western art to develop a different style.
Wu Guanzhong was one of those who had borrowed foreign ideas while staying true to his cultural traditions.
Wu studied Western painting in Paris in the 1940s. He formed his own ideas about modern Western art. He started to bring together Chinese and Western elements in his work. Wu’s paintings have the colour sense and principles of Western paintings, with the spirit and tonal (色彩的) variations of ink that are typical of Chinese artwork. Under his paintbrush, natural scenery is reduced to its basics; in simple but powerful forms.
Wu’s paintings now sell for record prices. He gave 72 works of art to the government of Zhejiang Province and China Academy of Art a year before he passed away.
“Wu has written a special chapter in the Chinese art history of the 20th century,” said an art researcher. “His paintings go between oil painting and ink painting, and draw Western art into the poetic Chinese style.”
“My tutor Jean Souverbie once said there are two paths for artists,” said Wu. “The narrow path, that is to please, and the broad one to make people’s hearts quiver. I wanted to take the broad one.”
46. Where and when did Wu Guanzhong study Western painting? (no more than 10 words)
____________________________________________________________
47. What is the feature of Wu Guanzhong’s paintings? (no more than 15 words)
____________________________________________________________
48. How would you describe Wu Guanzhong according to paragraph 4? (no more than 10words)
____________________________________________________________
49. What does the underlined word “quiver” in the last paragraph probably mean? (no more than 5 words)
____________________________________________________________
50. How do you think people can inherit (继承) and develop the traditional Chinese painting? Please explain. (no more than 20 words)
____________________________________________________________
【答案】46. In Paris in the 1940s.
47. They combine Chinese and Western art elements.
48. He was generous and devoted to art.
49. Shake / Tremble / Quake
50. People can combine it with foreign art styles. They can also stay true to cultural traditions while borrowing foreign ideas.
根据第三段中“Wu studied Western painting in Paris in the 1940s.(20世纪40年代,吴在巴黎学习西方绘画。)”可知,在20世纪40年代,吴冠中在巴黎学习西洋绘画。故答案为:In Paris in the 1940s.
【47题详解】
考查细节理解。根据第三段中“He started to bring together Chinese and Western elements in his work. Wu’s paintings have the colour sense and principles of Western paintings, with the spirit and tonal(色彩的) variations of ink that are typical of Chinese artwork.( 他开始在他的作品中融合中西方元素。吴的绘画既有西方绘画的色彩感和原则,又有中国艺术作品中典型的水墨精神和色调变化。)”可知,吴冠中绘画的特点是它们结合了中西方艺术元素。故答案为:They combine Chinese and Western art elements.
【48题详解】

【49题详解】
考查词义猜测。根据最后一段中““The narrow path, that is to please, and the broad one to make people’s hearts…. I wanted to take the broad one.”(‘窄的路,让人高兴;宽的路,让人……。我想要宽一点的。’)”可知,“the broad one to make people’s hearts …”与“the narrow path, that is to please”形成对比,此处表示走宽广的道路能让人们内心受到触动、震颤,由此可推知,“quiver”意思与“Shake/Tremble/Quake”相近 。
People can combine it with foreign art styles. They can also stay true to cultural traditions while borrowing foreign ideas.

With best wishes,
the Student Council
【答案】Dear fellow students,
I’m writing this letter to call on everyone to actively participate in Psychological Drama Performance, a creative platform to share our stories and strengthen communication among peers.
Mental health forms the basis of our growth, and this event offers us a unique opportunity to turn personal challenges into collective power.
Psychological drama, whose topic are required to reflect teenage experiences, allows us to safely address real-life challenges like academic pressure, relationship between parents and children, and emotional issues as growing up. Meanwhile, students can choose to write a play, direct, act or design the stage, which can help you to relax yourself and develop your abilities. Despite our busy and heavy study, rehearsing will be conducted in our spare time. Most importantly, guidance from psychology teachers will be available throughout the activity.
Your engagement matters! Together we’ll transform whispers of our heart into powerful dialogues. The stage awaits your courage.
With best wishes,
the Student Council

The elderly residents (居民) in care homes in London are being given hens to look after to stop them feeling lonely
