Double science It’s a big month for the Science Museum, with a new gallery and an exhibition opening. The Science City gallery tells the story of London between 1550 and 1800 when major scientific breakthroughs were happening across the city──from Newton’s laws of physics to the birth of microscopes allowing us to see the tiny creatures that live among us. If that isn’t enough, there’s also an exhibition on how art and science have worked closely together over the centuries and continue to do so today. Science City 1550──1800: The Linbury Gallery at the Science Museum. Opens 12 September──13 October, free. The Art of Innovation: From Enlightenment to Dark Matter at the Science Museum. 25 September──26 January, free but ticketed. Are you worried yet? We all suffer from anxiety. Artists look into this through artworks that bring to light their own anxieties or how people living with anxiety manage. The exhibition also covers what anxiety would look like if it could be visualised in light or sound──something we imagine to be impossible. On Edge: Living in an Age of Anxiety at Science Gallery. 19 September──19 January, free. Climbing the walls No artist has made a bigger career out of placing sculptures of human figures all over the place. Antony Gormley, the artist behind the Angel of the North and sculptures standing all over London, takes over the Royal Academy of Arts with a blockbusting(轰动一时的) exhibition. This is the hot art ticket in town. Antony Gormley at Royal Academy of Arts. 21 October──3 December, £18──22. 1. What is on show in the Science City gallery? A. Some of the greatest physicists. B. The stories of the London development. C. The prediction of the future science. D. Some of the great achievements in history. 2. Which exhibition allows visitors to know about a negative mood in a new way? A. The Art of Innovation. B. On Edge. C. Royal Academy of Arts. D. Science City 1550 ─ 1800. 3. When can visitors see these four exhibitions altogether? A. In January. B. In September. C. In October. D. In December. D 2. B 3. 根据第二段中的“The Science City gallery tells the story of London between 1550 and 1800 when major scientific breakthroughs were happening across the city”可知,科学城画廊讲述了伦敦在1550年到1800年间发生的重大科学突破。 根据倒数第二个标题中的“The exhibition also covers what anxiety would look like if it could be visualised in light or sound──something we imagine to be impossible. On Edge: Living in an Age of Anxiety at Science Gallery. 根据第二段中的“The Science City gallery tells the story of London between 1550 and 1800 when major scientific breakthroughs were happening across the city” 可知,科学城画廊讲述了伦敦在1550年到1800年间发生的重大科学突破。故选D。 B Last Monday, I visited Jalan Besar to find a new fan blade (风扇叶片) for a standing fan that my daughters had broken. I worked in the Jalan Besar area 30 years ago and remembered that there were lots of small hardware shops selling unusual things so I thought that I would have no problem finding a fan blade. However, after walking around for almost an hour, I found out that these shops were no longer around. When I was ready to give up and go home, I spotted an old-fashioned hardware store. After being greeted by a woman, I explained my predicament. She immediately asked me to show her the broken blade. Out of nowhere, a man who looked to be in his 60s came out. He asked to see the blade and then disappeared into the shop. He came back with a blade but it did not look the same as what I had in my hand. We compared the two blades and he said that it might work. I asked him how much it was. He told me that he had taken the blade off an old fan that someone had brought in for repair. He said, “It didn’t cost me anything, so why should I charge you for it?” That really touched me. I took the blade home and it worked perfectly! My daughters got a “new” fan for nothing. When I told my wife (almost in her 60s) this story, she said this reminded her of the kind aunties and uncles who used to run small shops and were always ready to help others when she was growing up. 4. Why did the author go to Jalan Besar? A. To visit his old friends. B. To apply for a job. C. To fix the broken fan. D. To buy a new fan. 5. What does the underlined word “predicament” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Nervous mood. B. Difficult situation. C. Anxious waiting. D. Boring moments. 6. Which of the following can best describe the old man? A. Kind and brave. B. Honest and helpful. C. Determined and curious. D. Open-minded and humorous. 7. How did the author’s wife react to his experience? A. She remembered the old days. B. She was greatly surprised. C. She couldn’t believe it. D. She thought little of it. C 5. B 6. B 7. 根据第一段“Last Monday, I visited Jalan Besar to find a new fan blade (风扇叶片) for a standing fan that my daughters had broken.(上周一,我去Jalan Besar为我女儿弄坏了一个落地式风扇找一个新的扇叶。)” 第二段“I worked in the Jalan Besar area 30 years ago and remembered that there were lots of small hardware shops selling unusual things so I thought that I would have no problem finding a fan blade. However, after walking around for almost an hour, I found out that these shops were no longer around.(30年前,我在Jalan Besar地区工作,记得那里有很多卖不寻常东西的小五金店,所以我想找到风扇叶片不会有问题。然而,走了将近一个小时后,我发现这些商店已经不在了。)”和第三段中“When I was ready to give up and go home, I spotted an old-fashioned hardware store.(当我准备放弃回家时,我看到了一家老式的五金店。)” 从而推知划线词句“After being greeted by a woman, I explained my predicament.(在一位女士的招呼下,我向她解释了我的predicament。)” 根据第四段“He asked to see the blade and then disappeared into the shop. He came back with a blade but it did not look the same as what I had in my hand. We compared the two blades and he said that it might work.(他要求看一下扇叶,然后就消失在店里了。他拿着一片扇叶回来了,但看起来和我手里的不一样。我们比较了两种扇叶,他说可能有用。)”可知,这位老人帮助作者找到了能用的扇叶,第五段中“He said, ‘It didn’t cost me anything, so why should I charge you for it?’(他说:‘我又没花什么钱,我为什么要收你钱呢? ’)”可知,这位老人是诚实的,没有收作者的钱。综上可知,这位老人是诚实的并且乐于助人。故选B项。 【7题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段“When I told my wife (almost in her 60s) this story, she said this reminded her of the kind aunties and uncles who used to run small shops and were always ready to help others when she was growing up.(当我把这个故事告诉我的妻子(她快60岁了)时,她说这让她想起了在她成长的过程中,那些曾经经营小商店的善良的叔叔阿姨,他们总是乐于助人。)” 故选A项。 C With its ability to pass down complex information across many generations, human language almost certainly played a sizable part in humans’ ability to become a dominant species on the planet. Despite this, we know precious little about how human language developed. A paper published in Frontiers in Psychology proposes that we should look at ancient cave art to gain insights into how our ability for language came to be. “Language doesn’t fossilize, but maybe in these cave drawings, we can see some of the beginnings of human beings as symbolic beings,” said Shigeru Miyagawa, MIT linguist (语言学家) professor and the paper’s lead author. Miyagawa and his co-authors propose that cave paintings exist at the intersection of communication between visual and aural (听觉的) cues. “The linguists’ theory comes from the fact that many of the caves where art has been found are acoustic (声音的) “hot spots”. In these caves, sounds echo (发出回声) louder and more intensely as one goes deeper. Many of the drawings are located in these sections of the cave, and even some areas that would have been better for drawing on walls were ignored in favor of these spots. The drawings would then show sounds that humans made while in the caves. Think about how many examples of cave art that show various four-legged animals, including horses. The echoing of noises, be it tapping on rocks inside the cave or thunder from outside the cave, would have created sounds like horses running across the ground. “This mix of sound and visual representation,” they write, “allowed early humans to enhance their ability to convey symbolic thinking to their fellows, as well as their ability to process aural and visual input as symbolic.” Such symbolic thinking could have led to developing other types of communication, including sentences. Of course, this is not a declarative statement. A great deal more research is required before anything can be said in a definitive way. One thing Miyagawa does feel confident about is that it will further conversations about the importance of our art in our development as a species. 8. What does the paper published in Frontiers in Psychology focus on? A. The origin of human beings. B. The importance of visual communication. C. The connection between cave art and language. D. The determining factors of language development. 9. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about? A The significance of ancient cave drawings. B. The theory about the formation of the caves. C. The sites where cave drawings were discovered. D. The evidence that supports linguists’ assumption. 10. What might the mix of sound and visual representation in cave paintings contribute to? A. The change of human thinking. B. The start of symbolic development. C. The improvement in communication. D The increase in the variety of languages. 11. Which of the following best describes the author’s attitude to the study? A. Doubtful. B. Objective. C. Indifferent. D. Disapproving. 【答案】8. C 9. D 10. C 11. B 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。本文介绍了一项发表在《心理学前沿》杂志上的研究,该研究提出通过观察古代洞穴艺术来深入了解人类语言能力的发展。 【8题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段中“A paper published in Frontiersin Psychology proposes that we should look at ancient cave art to gain insights into how our ability for language came to be.(一篇发表在《心理学前沿》上的论文提出,我们应该研究古代洞穴艺术,以深入了解我们的语言能力是如何形成的。)”可知,发表在Frontiers in Psychology上的论文专注于探讨洞穴艺术与语言能力发展之间的联系。故选C。 【9题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第三段,尤其是“The linguists’ theory comes from the fact that many of the caves where art has been found are acoustic ‘hot spots’.(语言学家的这一理论源于这样一个事实:许多发现艺术的洞穴都是声学“热点”。)”可知,第三段介绍了支持语言学家假设的证据,即许多发现有艺术作品的洞穴是声音的“热点”。故选D。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段““This mix of sound and visual representation,” they write, “allowed early humans to enhance their ability to convey symbolic thinking to their fellows, as well as their ability to process aural and visual input as symbolic.” Such symbolic thinking could have led to developing other types of communication, including sentences.(“这种声音和视觉表现的结合,”他们写道,“使早期人类能够提升自己向同伴传达象征性思维的能力,以及将听觉和视觉输入处理为象征性信息的能力。”这种象征性思维可能促成了其他类型交流方式的发展,包括句子的形成。)”可知,洞穴绘画中声音和视觉表现的结合可能有助于提高早期人类的交流能力。故选C。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据末段中“this is not a declarative statement. A great deal more research is required before anything can be said in a definitive way.(这不是一个陈述性的结论。在得出任何确定性结论之前,还需要进行大量的研究。)”和上文提到的研究的理论基础可知,作者对这项研究持客观态度,既没有表现出怀疑,也没有表现出冷漠或不赞成,作者只是客观地呈现了研究的内容和需要进一步研究的事实。故选B。 D Cars could soon be communicating with each other using 5G to make drivers aware of upcoming hazards (危险), scientists say. The extremely fast mobile internet would allow for rapid information transmission and could make drivers aware of black ice, pot holes or other dangers up ahead. Several car manufacturers (制造商) are already using 5G in their vehicles, including as a tool to help serve in the generation of self-driving vehicles. Experts at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) believe the high-speed connection will also improve the reliability and capability of automated vehicles to the point where they will be safer than the manual cars being driven today. They predict the number of road traffic accidents, which according to the World Health Organization account for more than 1.3 million deaths and up to 50 million people injured worldwide every year, will drop really as a result. Dr Dimitrios Liarokapis, a member of the research group, said, “To have a better idea of what the future will look like, think of having such cars that not only use sensors to scan what’s around them, they can also talk to each other and exchange safety-related information about their surroundings over an area that covers several square miles. With the help of 5G, a vehicle-generated early warning system that reminds drivers is possible within the next few years. Cars that are close enough to the danger area will transmit warning messages to other cars around them using short-range communication technologies, but also to cars further away using 5G, fast and reliably.” A few manufacturers are already working on connected cars. Of them, Ford told its intention to fit 80 percent of its future vehicles with technology that warns drivers about upcoming road accidents, bad weather and traffic jams. 12. What is the benefit of 5G mentioned in the text? A. It can improve the safety of automated vehicles. B. It can help drivers communicate with each other. C. It can effectively wipe out road traffic accidents. D. It can help make more profits for the manufacturers. 13. What can we know about the vehicle-generated early warning system? A. It can get information several miles ahead. B. It is under research and development at present. C It has been proved extremely helpful for driving. D. It will send messages to drivers a few days earlier. 14. What will be probably continued with the text? A. Some car manufacturers. B. The advantages when using 5G. C. Some safety rules when using 5G. D. The sales information of cars with 5G. 15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text? A. 5G Leaves Drivers Free When They Are Driving B. 5G Is to Bring Great Convenience to Our Daily Life C. 5G Has Been Popular with Drivers Around the World D. 5G Is on the Way to Making “Dialogue” Between Cars 【答案】12. A 13. B 14. A 15. D 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章讲述的是科学家认为汽车很快将会使用5G相互通信,以使驾驶员意识到即将到来的危险。这将使驾驶员注意到前方的黑冰、坑洼或其他危险。许多汽车制造商已经在其车辆中使用5G,包括作为帮助生成自动驾驶汽车的工具。 【12题详解】 细节理解题,根据第三段的第一句“Experts at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) believe the high-speed connection will also improve the reliability and capability of automated vehicles to the point where they will be safer than the manual cars being driven today. (格拉斯哥卡利多尼亚大学(GCU)的专家认为,高速连接还将提高自动驾驶汽车的可靠性和性能,使其比目前驾驶的手动汽车更安全。)”可知,高速互联网还将提高自动化车辆的可靠性和性能,使其比目前使用的手动驾驶汽车更安全。故选A。 【13题详解】 推理判断题,根据第四段的“To have a better idea of what the future will look like, think of having such cars that not only use sensors to scan what’s around them, they can also talk to each other and exchange safety-related information about their surroundings over an area that covers several square miles.(为了更好地了解未来会是什么样子,想想这样的汽车,不仅使用传感器扫描周围的东西,它们还可以相互交谈,并在几平方英里的范围内交换周围环境的安全相关信息。)”可知,车辆生成的预警系统还处于研发阶段。故选B。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“A few manufacturers are already working on connected cars. Of them, Ford told its intention to fit 80 percent of its future vehicles with technology that warns drivers about upcoming road accidents, bad weather and traffic jams.( 一些制造商已经在研发联网汽车。其中,福特表示,它打算在80%的未来汽车上安装警告司机即将发生的道路事故、恶劣天气和交通拥堵的技术。)”可知,此处提到了有几个汽车制造商开始使用这种技术,福特公司就是其中一个,下文很可能介绍使用5G的其他制造商。故选A。 【15题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段“Cars could soon be communicating with each other using 5G to make drivers aware of upcoming hazards (危险), scientists say. The extremely fast mobile internet would allow for rapid information transmission and could make drivers aware of black ice, pot holes or other dangers up ahead.( 科学家表示,汽车可能很快就会通过5G相互通信,让司机意识到即将到来的危险。极快的移动互联网将允许快速信息传输,并可以让司机意识到前方的黑冰、坑洞或其他危险。)”以及通读全文可知,作者讲述了5G网络将安装在汽车上,汽车可以通过5G网络互相“对话”,让司机提前意识到危险。D选项“5G Is on the Way to Making “Dialogue” Between Cars(5G正在实现车与车之间的“对话)”概括文章标题。故选D。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填人空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余 选项。 How to be Creative Most of us think that creativity is quality belonging only to artists, writers, or dancers, rather than ourselves. ____16____. The following tips are a great beginning for developing our creativity. Get out of your comfort zone We eagerly accept the familiar and fear the unknown. Break out of your usual patterns (模式) and welcome creativity into your life. As stated earlier, the human brain was designed to recognize patterns. ____17____. In fact, our comfort zone is nothing more than a collection of patterns. As we become more efficient at recognizing and using patterns, we rely less on creativity to find new paths. We should force ourselves out of our comfort zone and open up new possibilities. Try different things We are used to habits and routines, and creativity hates routines. If you usually drive to work, take the subway for a few days. ____18____. Interrupt your routine, experiment and try something new. New things are often creative, but the same old thing never is. ____19____ Having a great idea is not enough; you must work to make it a reality. Have you ever seen a new product and realized that you thought of the same thing long ago? Yet someone else is making money with “your” idea. ____20____. The difference between a dreamer and a doer is action. Do whatever it takes to bring your ideas to life. If you can put them into practice, you are well on your way to improving your creativity in all areas of your life. A. Take action B. Seek several choices C. Think from the other person’s point of view D. If you usually eat in the office, have lunch under a tree E. So we can create patterns for almost everything we do F. The truth is that we are all born with the ability to be creative G. We all have great ideas sometimes, but only a few people turn their ideas into realities 【答案】16. F 17. E 18. D 19. A 20. G 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要讲的是如何变得有创造力。 【16题详解】 依据上一句“Most of us think that creativity is quality belonging only to artists, writers, or dancers, rather than ourselves. (我们大多数人认为创造力是只属于艺术家、作家或舞蹈家的品质,而不是我们自己。)”可知,很多人认为创造力只属于艺术家、作家或舞蹈家,后面建议我们如何培养创造力,由此可推断出本句是讲每个人都有创造力,F选项“The truth is that we are all born with the ability to be creative (事实上,我们生来就有创造的能力)”说明我们每个人都是有创造力的,因此承上启下,符合语境。故选F。 【17题详解】 空前“As stated earlier, the human brain was designed to recognize patterns. (如前所述,人类的大脑是用来识别模式的。)”说明大脑是用来识别模式的,因此空格处应该说我们可以创造模式,E选项“So we can create patterns for almost everything we do (所以我们几乎可以为我们所做的一切创造模式)”说明了我们可以创造模式,其中的patterns和前面的patterns相一致,因此承接上文,符合语境,故选E。 【18题详解】 由本段小标题“Try different things (尝试不同的东西)”可知,本段主要讲述的是尝试做一些改变,D项“If you usually eat in the office, have lunch under a tree (如果你通常在办公室吃午饭,那就在树下吃吧)”是一种改变,因此符合本段语境,故选D。 【19题详解】 空处是本段的小标题,由空格下方的“Having a great idea is not enough; you must work to make it a reality. (光有一个好主意是不够的;你必须努力使它成为现实。)”和“If you can put them into practice, you are well on your way to improving your creativity in all areas of your life. (如果你能把它们付诸实践,你就能很好地在生活的各个方面提高你的创造力。)”可知,本段主要讲的是要行动起来,把一些好的想法变成现实,A选项“Take action (采取行动)”说明要采取行动,因此概括本段内容,可作为小标题,故选A。 【20题详解】 根据下文中的“The difference between a dreamer and a doer is action. This morning after an evening fight with my three-year-old daughter, I couldn’t wait to get her to school. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks (催促). One day, Ali took Zahra’s shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn’t until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali’s running shoes. Zahra’s school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school. Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes. The day of race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her. Just then he suddenly heard the announcement from the broadcast that he won the third prize as the runner who collided with Ali was disqualified for breaking the rule. Holding the shoes close to his chest during the award ceremony, Ali felt overjoyed and relieved. Filled with delight, Ali walked home quickly. He could not wait to see his sister and share the thrilling news. On his arrival, Ali found Zahra was waiting outside. She was wondering whether her brother had brought her what she was expecting. “Zahra, see what I have got for you.” He took the prize out of his bag with his trembling hands. The moment Zahra saw the shoes, her face lit up. So thrilled was she that she threw herself at Ali. “Thank you! Ali.” Tears of joy welled up in their eyes. 词汇激活 行为类 ①跳:jump/leap/spring ②违反:break/violate ③看见:see/catch sight of 情绪类 ①失望:let sb down/disappoint sb ②欣喜若狂:overjoyed/ecstatic/elated ③激动的:thrilled/excited 【点睛】[高分句型1] Refusing to give up at this point, he jumped to his feet and ran as fast as he could. B Last Monday, I visited Jalan Besar to find a new fan blade (风扇叶片) for a standing fan that my daughters had broken. 6. How did the author’s wife react to his experience? A. She remembered the old days. B. She was greatly surprised. C. She couldn’t believe it. D. She thought little of it. C With its ability to pass down complex information across many generations, human language almost certainly played a sizable part in humans’ ability to become a dominant species on the planet. C The connection between cave art and language. D. The determining factors of language development. 9. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about? A. The significance of ancient cave drawings. D. The increase in the variety of languages. 11. Which of the following best describes the author’s attitude to the study? A. Doubtful. B. Objective. C. Indifferent. D. Disapproving. D Cars could soon be communicating with each other using 5G to make drivers aware of upcoming hazards (危险), scientists say. 12. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third.
