Fiona was a very popular girl at school. From an early age, she made an effort to be kind and friendly to everyone. She invited the whole class to her birthday party and sometimes gave presents to everybody.
However, everything changed on International Day of Friendship. In class that day, everyone had to make three presents to give to their three best friends. Fiona enjoyed the task of choosing three from among all her classmates. But when all the presents had been made and shared out, she was the only one that didn’t receive a present! Fiona hadn’t expected this and felt terrible, crying for hours. Everyone came to comfort her, but each stayed only a short time before leaving—just as she had done to others so many times.
She realized she was a good companion (伙伴), but she hadn’t been a true friend to anyone. Although she had tried to be close to everyone, she found that wasn’t enough to create true friendships.
That night, Fiona told her mother about everything. Her mother said, “My dear, you cannot buy friends with a smile or a few good words. If you want true friends, you must give them time and real care. For a true friend, you must always be available in good times and bad.”
Hearing this, Fiona decided to change her ways to finally have some true friends. As she lay in bed that night, she thought about how to achieve this. She thought about her mother, who was always ready to help her, put up with her bad behaviour, encouraged her and loved her dearly. That was what made a true friend!
Fiona smiled happily, realizing she already had the best friend anyone could ever want.

Mr. Worth liked spending time with his grandson, Shawn. He enjoyed teaching his grandson something that he couldn’t learn at school. Grandfathers always have a close relationship with their grandchildren. They pass down experience that will be helpful to the younger generations (一代人).
One day, while Mr. Worth was reading a book, Shawn ran into the house with a big smile. He told his grandfather about a science homework that he was excited about.
Each student was going to grow a pot of bean plants. When the plants became big, the students would move them into the school’s garden. The student whose bean plant was the biggest would be praised.
Shawn showed his grandfather the bean seeds. He explained that his teacher taught him and his classmates the steps to make the seeds grow in class. First, put the seeds on a wet paper towel (纸巾). Then, put them near a window to let in some sunshine. When the seeds sprout (发芽), they are ready to be moved into a small pot.
After Shawn finished, Mr. Worth said, “You do just as you’ve learned, but I want to show you one more thing about growing plants.”
“When I was a boy, my father showed me how to grow a strong plant,” he continued. “When the plant is starting out, you can put some stones on it.” Shawn looked at his grandfather in surprise and could hardly believe what he said.
“Doesn’t the weight stop the bean from growing?” he asked.
“No, of course not. This way, you will force the bean plant to be stronger. If you give it everything it wants, it will grow too fast and it will be weak. Then, when the first big wind blows, it will fall over.”

January 20,2025, a Chinese tech company named DeepSeek made a new AI called DeepSeek-R1. This smart program can solve math problems, write code (代码), and answer questions like top models such as OpenAI’s GPT-4o, but it costs much less to build. The team spent only $5.58 million (1/70 of OpenAI’s cost) and used 2,048 computer chips (芯片) for two months to make it. This shows that good ideas can beat big money.
DeepSeek-R1 learns by trying many times and getting better, like how students practice maths. Other AIs need lots of prepared examples, but R1 improves by itself. In a global math test, it got 79.8% right, a little higher than OpenAI’s model. A simple version (版本) of R1 can even run on low-cost computers, helping schools and small companies.
DeepSeek-R1 is free to use and change. On its first day online, over 19,000 programmers world-wide started projects to study it. A German scientist said experiments with R1 cost $10 instead of $300 with other AIs. Even Meta (a famous U. S. tech company) top scientist said, “This kind of free AI could change the world.”
U. S. tech companies are worried. Meta planned to spend $65 billion more on AI research. Experts said China was catching up fast. A report in Nature magazine called R1 a “big step forward”, confirming that smart ideas beat expensive tools.
As a DeepSeek engineer said, “We want AI to be a friend, not something only rich people can use.” With R1, China shows the world that great things come from new ideas and hard work, not just money.
36 How much did it cost to build DeepSeek-R1?
A. $5.58 million. B. $65 billion. C. $10. D. $300.
37. What can we learn about DeepSeek-R1 from Paragraph 4?
A. It needs programmers to fix mistakes. B. It becomes better through practice.
C. It copies answers from other AIs. D. It only works with expensive tools.
38. Why did Meta plan to spend more money on AI research?
A. To help Chinese companies. B. To build more computer chips.
C. To compete with DeepSeek-R1. D. To hire German scientists.
39. What does the underlined word “confirming” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. 证明 B. 探索 C. 拒绝 D. 连接
40. What can be the best title for the text?

Do you get in trouble for feeding your dog on food from dinner under the table? A new study suggests that by sharing “people food”, you might actually be helping to keep your pet healthy.
Many dogs are fed dry processed food. Science has shown that a diet (饮食) of processed food is not healthy for humans. Scientists from the University of Helsinki, in Finland, say this diet is not good for our pet dogs, either.
The scientists discovered that the foods a dog might find in an owner’s home such as eggs, fish, meat and vegetables may be better than a diet of just dog food. This is because having different kinds of foods leads to more variety (多样性) in microbes, which are little living things, too small to be seen with our eyes. There are millions of them in human and animal bodies. Some are bad for us, but many are good for us, and they play important roles in helping us digest (消化) food.
A total of 8,500 young pet dogs took part in the study 4,500 of them were under 6 months old, and the rest were between 6 and 18 months old. The owners were asked about what foods they had fed their pets and how often. When the dogs reached adulthood, their owners reported that about 20% of the dogs showed CE symptoms (慢性肠胃不适症状) such as weight loss. However, if dogs had been fed a mixed diet while young, it was 22% less possible for them to experience CE symptoms later in life.
Dr. Anna Hielm-Bjorkman told The Times of London, “Dog food on sale is described as providing a complete diet... But what we show is that variety is important. Nobody would give 12 years of the same food to a child—why should a dog be different?”
41. What does the underlined part “this diet” in the passage refer to?
A. dry processed dog food B. mixed food
C. eggs, fish, meat and vegetables D. varied foods
42. According to the new study, dog owners ________.
A. must offer dry food to their dogs B. can feed dogs on “people food”
C. had better buy more processed food D. shouldn’t make food by themselves
43. Paragraph 3 mainly explains why ________.
A. dogs need different kinds of foods B. little living things stay in human bodies
C. scientists study dry processed food D. people should keep dogs at home
44. How does the writer describe the study in Paragraph 4 to make it believable?
A. By using pictures. B. By giving examples.
C. By telling stories. D. By listing numbers.
45. Which part of a magazine is the passage probably taken from?
A. History. B. Business. C. Science. D. Culture.

七、阅读表达(共5小题,计10分)
阅读下面短文,根据要求完成下面各小题。
Do you find it hard to say no whenever someone comes to you for help? Do you feel guilty (内疚的) when you have to tell people that you can’t help them? And do you often say “yes” while your true answer is “no”? If you answered yes, you may be a “people-pleaser”.
Being friendly and helpful is a good thing. It helps you build lasting friendships. However, going too far—trying to please others even at the cost of your own happiness—can leave you feeling stressed. Luckily, there are some steps that you can take to stop being a people-pleaser.
To start with, it’s important to create “boundaries (边界)” in your life. Be clear about what you really like to do. You can also tell others that they can only come to you during a certain period of time.
When someone asks you for help, tell him or her that you need some time to think about it. Use this time to ask yourself: Do you really want to do this? How much time will it take? By giving yourself a few minutes, you’ll be better able to decide.
(3) Some people always try to please others because they have little confidence in themselves. They place a low value on their own happiness. In this case, try positive self-talk. Remind yourself that you have dreams, too. You don’t have to give away your time and energy to do things that don’t bring you joy.
(4) Making a sudden and big change can be hard, but you can break a huge task up into pieces. You may, for example, text to say no. Then, go straight to the person and say no. Practice this in less difficult situations first, such as talking to a salesperson or ordering at a restaurant. Then try refusing your friends or relatives.
Stopping being a people-pleaser doesn’t mean you have to give up being kind and helpful. You can still do good things—but don’t take away your own happiness.
1—2题根据短文内容简要回答问题;3—4题将短文中划线的句子译成汉语;5题请给短文拟一个适当的英文标题。
71. Why shouldn’t we be “people-pleasers”?
_____________________________________________________

根据“To start with, it’s important to create ‘boundaries’ in your life. Be clear about what we really like to do. Then, when someone asks us for help, tell him or her that we need some time to think about it.
【73题详解】
本句是because“因为”引导的原因状语从句。Some people“一些人”是主句主语,always“总是”,try to do“试图做”,please others“取悦他人”;they“他们”作从句主语,have little confidence in“对……缺乏信心”,themselves“他们自己”。故填:有些人总是试图取悦他人,因为他们对自己缺乏信心。
【74题详解】
本句是but“但是”连接的并列句。Making a sudden and big change“做出突然而重大的改变”是动名词作主语,情态动词can“可能”,hard“困难的”;you“你”,break a huge task up into pieces“把一项艰巨的任务分解成若干个小部分”。故填:做出突然且巨大的改变可能很难,但你可以把一个巨大的任务分解成若干个小部分。

【答案】例文
My Journey of Growth in Junior High School
In junior high school, I faced many challenges that helped me grow. One big step was joining the school’s speech contest. At first, I was really nervous about speaking in front of many people. But with lots of practice and encouragement from my friends, I became more confident. When I finally stood on stage and gave my speech, it felt amazing. This experience taught me that if I keep trying, I can do anything.
Another important time was during a school trip. We had to work together to solve problems and decided where to go. It was hard, but we helped each other and had a lot of fun. This trip showed me how important it is to be a good team member and to trust my friends.
The two experiences made me braver and more independent. In the future, I want to keep pushing myself to try new things and always to be there for my friends.

Shawn listened to his grandfather carefully. He wanted to grow the beans in the way his grandfather described. He could hardly wait to tell his friends what he had learned.

January 202025, a Chinese tech company named DeepSeek made a new AI called DeepSeek-R1.
36. How much did it cost to build DeepSeek-R1?
A $5.58 million.
A. Competition between GPT-4 and DeepSeek-R1
B. Comparison of Chinese and American AI Models
C. Appearance of Chinese AI Model DeepSeek-R1

C scientists study dry processed food D. people should keep dogs at home
