One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. It is absolutely the case in Turkey where garbage collectors started collecting books that have been thrown away and ended up opening a library.
It started when garbage man Durson Ipek found a bag of abandoned books when he was working and then it snowballed from there. Ipek and other garbage men started gathering the books they found on the streets that were ready for landfills (垃圾填埋地) and as their collection started to grow, so did word of mouth. Soon, local residents started donating books directly. The library was initially available only to the garbage employees and their families to use but as the collection grew, so did public interest and the library was opened to the public in 2017.
“On the one hand, there were those who were leaving these books on the streets. On the other hand, others were looking for these books,” Ankaya mayor Alper Tasdelen told CNN. “We started to discuss the idea of creating a library from these books. When everyone supported it, this project happened.”
All the books that are found are sorted and checked for condition. If they pass, they go on the shelves. Today, the library has over 6,000 books that range from fiction to nonfiction and there’s a very popular children’s section that even has a collection of comic books. An entire section is devoted to scientific research and there are also books available in English and French. The collection has grown so large that the library loans books to schools and educational programs.
“Village school teachers from all over Turkey are requesting books,” Tasdelen told CNN. The government has to hire a full-time employee to administrate the library.
This library is incredibly popular. It is frequently filled with the children of the city’s workers and students from nearby schools. There is a waiting room set up for readers and chess boards for the people who visit the library. You can even enjoy a cup of tea in the waiting room.
4. What can we infer from paragraph 2?
A. Every citizen was accessible to the library at the beginning.
B. The collection of abandoned books drew few people’s attention.
C. The abandoned books would have gone to waste without the garbage men.
D. Local residents made little contribution to the collection of abandoned books.
5. What do we know about the library of abandoned books?
A. It features books of scientific research.
B. It has an entire section of books in English and French.
C Schools and educational programs have access to the books.
D. Books need to be sorted and checked for condition before being donated.
6. Why does the government have to hire a full-time employee?
A. To make sure that the books in the library won’t be stolen.
B. To advertise the library to more Turkish villages.
C. To meet the demands from educational programs.
D. To help arrange donated books in the correct order.
7. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. Popularity of the library of abandoned books in Turkey.
B. Reasons why the library of abandoned books was founded.
C. Benefits of the library of abandoned books to Turkish citizens.
D. People’s high demand for books on the library of abandoned books.
【答案】4. C 5. C 6. C 7. A

Scientists already knew African gray parrots are particularly clever, with large brains and exceptional problem-solving skills. But they wondered if these birds, separated from great apes by some 300 million years of evolution, also possess advanced social abilities, like helping one another. Corvids, another group of so-called “intelligent” birds that includes crows, have so far failed to demonstrate this ability, according to Desiree Brucks, a Swiss biologist.
“Parrots had not been tested yet,” says Brucks. “So it remained an open question whether or not the ability to help each other actively may have evolved (进化) within birds.” Brucks and his colleague placed many paired combinations of eight African grays into glass enclosures (围栏), with a hole cut in a dividing wall that allowed the two birds to interact. The scientists then trained the parrots to trade coins to a person through another hole in exchange for nuts.
When one parrot had all the coins, it would assist its coinless partner by gifting some of them through the dividing wall. The parrots tended to give more coins to friends and family, but would also help parrots they had never met. Importantly, the parrots didn’t help when their partner was blocked from accessing the experimenter, suggesting they could recognize when their assistance was needed, or even useful.
This behavior, detailed in their study, published this week in the journal Current Biology, is possibly a consequence of evolving in giant, moving groups where an altruistic reputation is important. Katherine Cronin, a zoologist in Chicago, approves the study for ruling out simple playfulness as an explanation for passing the coins. “We can be pretty confident that the African gray parrots are considering the benefits available to their partners,” Cronin says. She points out the research adds to growing evidence of selflessness across the animal kingdom—and reminds us it is not unique to humans.
8. What is the study mainly about?
A. The living habits of African gray parrots.
B. The social abilities of African gray parrots.
C. The problem-solving skills of African gray parrots.
D. The comparison between African gray parrots and crows.
9. How did the researchers test the parrots’ ability to help each other?
A. By setting up the parrots enclosures.
B. By observing parrots work in groups.
C. By creating a situation for parrots to share coins.
D. By assessing the parrots’ intelligence separately.
10. What does the underlined word “altruistic” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Selfless. B. Impressive. C. Fearless. D. Professional.
11. Where is this article most likely taken from?
A. A nature guidebook. B. A pet care magazine.
C. A scientific journal. D. A bird-watching newsletter.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. A 11. C

根据第一段中“But they wondered if these birds, separated from great apes by some 300 million years of evolution, also possess advanced social abilities, like helping one another. (但他们想知道,这些在大约3亿年的进化过程中从类人猿中分离出来的鸟类,是否也拥有高级的社交能力,比如互相帮助)”可知,这项研究主要是探究非洲灰鹦鹉的社交能力。故选B项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Brucks and his colleague placed many paired combinations of eight African grays into glass enclosures (围栏), with a hole cut in a dividing wall that allowed the two birds to interact. The scientists then trained the parrots to trade coins to a person through another hole in exchange for nuts. (Brucks和他的同事将八只非洲灰鸟的配对成许多组合,放入玻璃围栏中,在分隔墙上开一个洞,让两只鸟互动。然后,科学家们训练鹦鹉通过另一个洞向一个人交换硬币,以换取坚果)”可知,研究人员通过创造一个让鹦鹉分享硬币的环境来测试鹦鹉互相帮助的能力。故选C项。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词的下文““We can be pretty confident that the African gray parrots are considering the benefits available to their partners,” Cronin says. She points out the research adds to growing evidence of selflessness across the animal kingdom—and reminds us it is not unique to humans. 故选A项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是第二段中““Parrots had not been tested yet,” says Brucks. “So it remained an open question whether or not the ability to help each other actively may have evolved (进化) within birds.” (Brucks说:“鹦鹉还没有被测试过,因此,鸟类相互帮助的能力是否已经进化出来,这仍然是一个悬而未决的问题。”)”可知,文章介绍了Brucks开展的针对非洲灰鹦鹉的社交能力的研究,主要包括研究目的、实验方法、实验结果、结果分析及研究意义的内容。结合选项可知,文章最有可能出自科学期刊。A. 一本自然指南;B. 一本宠物护理杂志;D. 一份观鸟通讯。故选C项。

Artificial intelligence(AI)models have long surpassed (超过) just creating text responses and images. Now, with only one sentence, OpenAI’s latest text-to-video model, Sora, can turn your words into video with good visual quality while faithfully following your content instructions.
Sora is said to perform better than many other existing models with similar functions. The Al model can create video at suitable aspect ratios (屏幕高宽比) for different devices such as both widescreen videos and vertical videos that we usually see on social media. It also lets users quickly test out content in lower quality before making the high-quality version, which helps speed up output.
Aside from this, its ability to present videos in a realistic and smooth manner is amazing. Sora can create detailed scenes with several characters, scientific types of motion, and accurate subject and background details while generating multiple shots with a single video. Beyond the user’s requests, it also understands how these elements exist in the real world. For example, reflections in the water changes as a woman walks by.
Sora’s performance wouldn’t be possible without its helpful assistant, ChatGPT, which transforms simple sentences into detailed descriptions. improving the accuracy of output according to the user’s prompts (提示语).
However, the current model isn’t perfect. It may have trouble accurately showing how things move in a complicated scene and might not get how one action leads to another. For example, if someone eats part of a cookie in a Sora-made video, the cookie might not look like it’s been bitten into. The model might mix up directions like left and right, and find it hard to describe events in the right order.
As of February, Sora is still in the testing stage of development. OpenAI is now inviting cybersecurity professionals to make random attacks on Sora’s system, aiming to test the model’s possible weaknesses and risks. Sora has also been open to some visual artists, designers and filmmakers. Their feedback (反馈) will assist OpenAI in enhancing the model to better serve creative professionals.
12 What is the main focus of paragraphs 2-3?
A. Sora’s strengths. B. Sora’s variety.
C. Sora’s development. D. Sora’s techniques.
13. How does ChatGPT contributes to Sora’s capabilities?
A. By specifying user input. B. By providing verbal feedback.
C. By examining sample videos. D. By improving video quality.
14. Why does the author provide the example in paragraph 5?
A. To stress Sora’s potential safety risks.
B. To illustrate Sora’s existing limitations.
C. To show Sora’s perfect performance.
D. To explain the concept of a space time patch.
15. What can we know about Sora up to now?
A. It has been made available to various industries.
B. Its commercial release has been called off.
C. It has exposed alarming security issues.
D. It is undergoing testing and improvement.
【答案】12. A 13. A 14. B 15. D

Should works created by technology be considered art?
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Should works created by technology be considered art?
Following the study of the unit Meeting the Muse, our class has been immersed in heated debates about the definition of the art. Students’ opinions vary on this topic
Supporters argue that technology is a revolutionary tool expanding artistic boundaries. Digital paintings, AI music, and algorithm-driven sculptures demonstrate creativity beyond human limitations. They emphasize that art evolves with tools.
Opponents counter that true art requires human intention and soul. They claim machines lack emotions, merely following code. A painting’s value, for instance, lies in the artist’s struggles and vision — elements algorithms can’t replicate. Tech creations, they argue, are products, not art.
In my view, technology itself isn’t the creator but a collaborator. The essence of art lies in expression, not the medium. If a work conveys meaning and resonates emotionally, its origin — human or machine — shouldn’t disqualify it. As Pablo Picasso said, “Art washes away the dust of daily life.” Let’s focus on the message, not the maker.

As the rising sun spread warm light over the thick woods, Alex and his loyal dog Max started their much-anticipated hiking trip. Their destination was a forest on the mountain, which was famous for its fascinating scenery and diverse wild animals. Alex, an enthusiastic nature lover and photographer, had carefully planned this trip, packing his camera with high hopes of taking some truly amazing photos of the landscape and some shy creatures that inhabited this area.
The path was peaceful, filled with sunlight shining through the thick trees above. The only sounds that they heard were birds singing and leaves moving softly as they whispered secrets in the breeze. Max, full of energy, bounded ahead, his tail swinging wildly as he excitedly explored the new surroundings.
When they went around a bend, Alex’s sharp eyes caught a strange flash in the distance. His curiosity got the better of him, and he quickened his pace with Max. As he approached it, he found a large, metal object half-buried in the mud. Its worn metal parts were open wide, with sharp sawteeth (锯齿) on it. The ground around it was disturbed, with broken branches and faint boot prints — signs that someone had been here recently. The sight made Alex feel scared — a warning that even though the forest seemed calm, dangerous things might be hiding nearby.
Alex continued walking forward when suddenly he heard a scream coming from behind him. He turned around and saw a little deer lying on the metal object he had just found. Observing carefully, Alex noticed that its back leg was stuck in the metal object. The deer’s eyes were wide with fear and pain, and every time it tried to get free, the sawteeth around its leg seemed to press even tighter. Alex realized that this metal object was most likely a trap left behind illegal poaching (偷猎) activities.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Alex’s heart sank at the sight. He knew he had to act quickly. Kneeling down gently, he tried to calm the terrified deer with soft words. “It’s okay, little one. I’m here to help.” Then, with great care, he started examining the trap, trying to figure out how to free the deer’s leg without causing more harm. Max stood nearby, looking worried. As Alex worked, he thought about the cruelty of poaching. How could people set such traps and cause so much suffering to these innocent animals? Finally, after what seemed like ages, he managed to loosen the trap, and the deer’s leg was free.
He picked up his camera and took a photo of the deer as it bounded away. The deer’s graceful figure disappearing into the forest made Alex feel a sense of relief. This experience made him more determined to do something against poaching. He decided to report this to the local forest rangers, providing them with the exact location of the trap and the details he had observed. He hoped that his actions could help protect the precious wildlife in this forest. As he and Max continued their hike, he knew that this day would be one he would never forget, and he was ready to take on more challenges to safeguard nature.

A Every citizen was accessible to the library at the beginning.
C. Schools and educational programs have access to the books.
C
A Selfless. B. Impressive. C. Fearless. D. Professional.

The Al model can create video at suitable aspect ratios (屏幕高宽比) for different devices, such as both widescreen videos and vertical videos that we usually see on social media.
