Roland was the first in his family to go to college, looking forward to working his way up the career ladder (阶梯). But his part-time job as a PE teacher gave him other ideas after he saw children end their schooling due to poverty, and among them, there were many children with athletic talent. Then the Cheetah’s track club was born.
Roland used to be strong. Yet in his early forties, his knees brought him trouble both physically and economically. He hobbled (跛行) across the track, shouting encouragement, stopping to give instructions, and gathering the small athletes together for organized practice. For those kids aged from 8 to 18, the only cost was 15 dollars for T-shirts and shorts.
Roland had a firm belief. “None of these kids has to be what their environment tells them to be,” he said. And indeed, as the years went by, he’d watched former awkward learners in his school become doctors and lawyers, and coaches. Roland often shouted on the field, “A third place earns points. A sixth place pushes teammates ahead of you. Any effort is better than no effort!”
With this belief, Roland and his young athletes made their way to the national competition in Chicago. But while teams from Atlanta, Los Angeles and New York stepped off chartered buses (包车), accompanied by coaches and team doctors, the Cheetahs arrived in crowded minivans, and then ten kids packed together into one room. They were thus rudely named as “the team with the mismatched water bottles”.
But this instead inspired everyone’s determination to win. On the day of the race, the kids rose early for breakfast. There were free bacon and eggs plus paid dessert. All the kids chose free food. “We are so full of sweet optimism that we can’t stomach the artificial sugars!” they said.
Eventually, the Cheetahs won their share of medals and prize money. With the money, Roland originally planned to treat his kids to sweets, but he smiled with tears when the children said they’d save the money for his surgery. He knew all his efforts were worth it!
4. What is Roland’s purpose in starting the Cheetah’s track club?
A. To encourage poor students to keep fit. B. To raise money to treat his knee trouble.
C. To get ahead in his career as a PE teacher. D. To assist poor students with a gift for sports.
5. What did Roland expect the kids to do according to paragraph 3?
A. Change their life by working hard. B. Be aware of their current situations.
C. Keep themselves from being left behind. D. Be brave to choose their favorite career.
6. Why was Roland’s team named “the team with the mismatched water bottles”?
A. They competed on a really tight budget.
B. Their team came from a less developed area.
C. They didn’t carry any water bottles with them.
D. Their team failed to match the overall strength of others.
7. Which can best describe the members of the Cheetahs?
A. Generous and emotional. B. Serious and modest.
C. Confident and creative. D. Optimistic and grateful.
C
People today are much cleverer than they were in previous generations. A study of 72 countries found that average IQs rose by 2.2 points per decade between 1948 and 2020. This stunning change is known as the Flynn Effect after James Flynn, the scientist who first noticed it. Flynn was initially confused by his discovery. It took millions of years for the brain to evolve. How could it improve so rapidly over just a few decades?
The answer is largely that people were becoming better nourished and mentally stimulated. Just as muscles need food and exercise to grow strong, the brain also needs the right nutrients and activity to develop. Kids today are much less likely to be malnourished (营养不良的) than they were in past decades, and more likely to go to school. Yet there is no room for satisfaction. In poor and middle-income countries, many children are still too ill-fed to reach the cognitive potential.
The world grows enough food, but several obstacles stop nutrients getting into young brains. One is war. Families sheltering around cannot risk out to plant or harvest, and some governments intentionally starve certain regions into submission. Another is disease. Hungry children fall sick more often, and the energy they spend battling bugs cannot be devoted to growing brains. Poverty is also a big part of the problem. But global data from UNICEF, an aid agency, show that although half the children with very restricted diets (including no more than two food groups) are indeed from poor families, the other half are not. Other factors, such as poor eating habits, are to blame as well. Research about how to overcome the obstacles is needed.
Some argue that human intelligence will matter less as people entrust (委托) their thinking to artificial intelligence. To assume this would be as foolish as betting 100 years ago that the invention of the car would make it unnecessary to walk. In the workplace, human intelligence and AI will probably assist each other. And brains are for the joy of thinking, as well as earning money. Steven Pinker of Harvard University calls human intelligence “a tailwind in life”, helping people adapt rationally to new challenges or a changing environment. For a modest price, the next generation can have a stronger tailwind. It would not only be wrong to refuse them the tailwind. It would be stupid.
8. What can we learn about the Flynn Effect?
A. Average IQs have risen fast in the past decades. B. Intelligence has been stable across generations.
C. People now are as intelligent as their ancestors. D. Better education leads to improved physical health.
9. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 2 mean?
A. The Flynn Effect has reached its peak. B. Global problems continue despite IQ gains.
C. Society values human intelligence less. D. Malnutrition is merely a result of poverty.
10. What does the author think of artificial intelligence?
A. Useless. B. Unique. C. Beneficial. D. Ineffective.
11. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Stages of IQ Development B. Secrets to Rising IQs Worldwide
C. Insights Into Global IQ Trend D. Influence of the Flynn Effect
D
The United States has the largest prison population in the world and the highest rate of imprisonment (囚禁) per person. In 2016, 2.3 million people were imprisoned, despite a massive decline in both violent and property crimes. These alarming statistics provide insight into why crime regulation and mass imprisonment are such hot topics today, and many scholars, lawyers, and policymakers have explored theories and strategies to ensure public safety, with the broken windows theory being one of the most influential.
The broken windows theory states that visible signs of disorder, such as broken windows, create an urban environment that promotes even more crime and disorder. As such, policing these minor issues will help create a safe society where crime rates, including violent crime rates, are low.
A major assumption that the broken windows theory makes is that an environment’s landscape communicates to its residents in some way. A broken window, for instance, symbolizes a defenseless, disorderly community that cannot handle crime — opening the doors to all kinds of unwanted activity to occur. In such environments, residents no longer see their communities as safe spaces and will avoid spending time in public spaces to protect themselves from potential attacks. Additionally, the neglect of these broken windows also symbolizes a lack of informal social control — actions that regulate behavior, such as following social norms and intervening as a bystander when a crime is committed. Without this control, individuals would be more likely to engage in criminal behavior, both violent and nonviolent, in this type of area.
People have different approaches to the application of the broken windows theory. Supporters hold that informal social control(such as community involvement) and formal social control (such as police intervention) are crucial for effectively regulating crime. However, critics point out that there is no clear causal relationship between lack of order and crime. Additionally, over-policing minor offenses can unfairly impact marginalized (边缘化的) communities.
Despite ongoing debates, cities such as Ferguson, Missouri are heavily policed and fine offenders heavily for broken window types of crimes. Crime regulation is not easy, but the broken windows theory provides an approach to reducing offenses and maintaining order in society.
12. What do the statistics in paragraph 1 demonstrate?
A. The decline in crimes. B. The root of imprisonment.
C. The strategy to ensure safety. D. The need to control crimes.
13. What is the focus of broken windows policing?
A. Fighting serious crimes. B. Handling minor disorder.
C. Repairing broken windows. D. Promoting community unity.
14. Which of the following can best illustrate the broken windows theory?
A. broken windows — fearful residents — decreased informal social control — increased criminal activities
B. broken windows — heavy police presence — reduced visible disorder — less community engagement
C. broken windows — intervention from bystanders — over-policing minor offenses — fewer community activities
D. broken windows — increased crimes — introduction of formal laws — worsening lawlessnes
15. What is the author’s attitude towards the broken windows theory?
A. Critical. B. Unclear. C. Supportive. D. Doubtful.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Everyone likes the beautiful Cinderella, but I like the ugly stepsister. The sidewalk was filled with shoppers as my mother and I hurried to the department store. I raised my neck for a look at the holiday window display, but at the age of six I was too small to see around the grown-ups with their winter coats and packages. When at last we reached the store, I stood with my eyes widened. “Look, Mother,” I shouted, pressing my hands against the glass, “Cinderella.” Before my eyes was the most beautiful doll I had ever seen! She wore a fairy princess suit made of shining red silk. I knew if I lifted her skirt I would find her crystal(水晶) shoes. The tiny tiara (冠状头饰) fastened to her silky golden hair shone.
“If only she were mine,” I dreamed. “We’d have tea parties, share secrets and dance with a handsome prince.” But to my disappointment, my mother guided me away from the window, explaining that she and my father could not afford such an expensive doll. “But there will be a very special gift under the tree for you on Christmas morning, Madge,” she said. “I promise.” Later that week I leaned against Mother’s sewing machine, watching the needle flash up and down. “Bet you don’t know what this is!” she joked, holding up the cloth for me to see. “My Christmas doll!” I yelled. It was still in the early stages but I could make out the head, neck and body. “So much to my surprise!” Mother laughed as I danced around the room, already pretending Cinderella and I were at the ball. It wouldn’t be long now.
My excitement grew with each passing day. Mother continued to work on the doll, and whenever I walked into the room she would hide it under a pillow. I could tell by her smile she was pleased with her progress. On Christmas morning I jumped out of bed, ran down the hall and quickly arrived at the living room where the Christmas tree was placed.
注意:1.续写的词数应为150左右;
2.请按下列格式作答。
There, underneath the tree, was a beautifully packed gift box.

【答案】4. D 5. A 6. A 7. D

A. Critical. B. Unclear. C. Supportive. D. Doubtful.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. C
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了破窗理论及其在犯罪调控中的应用与争议。
【12题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中“In 2016, 2.3 million people were imprisoned, despite a massive decline in both violent and property crimes. These alarming statistics provide insight into why crime regulation and mass imprisonment are such hot topics today(2016年,尽管暴力和财产犯罪大幅下降,但仍有230万人被监禁。这些令人震惊的统计数据揭示了为什么犯罪调控和大规模监禁是当今的热门话题)”可知,第一段中的统计数据表明美国监狱人口庞大,需要控制犯罪。故选D。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“The broken windows theory states that visible signs of disorder, such as broken windows, create an urban environment that promotes even more crime and disorder. As such, policing these minor issues will help create a safe society where crime rates, including violent crime rates, are low.(破窗理论指出,像破碎的窗户这类显性失序现象,会营造出一种助长更多犯罪和混乱的城市环境。因此,整治这些小问题将有助于打造一个安全的社会,在这样的社会里,包括暴力犯罪在内的犯罪率都会很低)”可知,破窗理论的重点是处理轻微混乱。故选B。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“A broken window, for instance, symbolizes a defenseless, disorderly community that cannot handle crime — opening the doors to all kinds of unwanted activity to occur. 故选A。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中“with the broken windows theory being one of the most influential.(其中,破窗理论是最具影响力的理论之一)”和最后一段中“Crime regulation is not easy, but the broken windows theory provides an approach to reducing offenses and maintaining order in society.(犯罪管控并非易事,但破窗理论为减少违法行为、维护社会秩序提供了一种可行方案)”可知,作者首先指出破窗理论的突出地位,在第二、三段详细解释它的逻辑,在第四段介绍支持和反对应用它的声音,在最后一段肯定了它为减少犯罪提供了一种可行的方法。因此,作者对该理论是支持的。故选C。

第二节(满分25分)
注意:1.续写的词数应为150左右;
2.请按下列格式作答。
There, underneath the tree, was a beautifully packed gift box.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
But I could see Mother watching me, waiting for my response.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 There, underneath the tree, was a beautifully packed gift box. Inside it was the “doll” I expected. With butterflies in my stomach, I breathed deeply and then opened it expectantly. However, much to my disappointment, it was nothing like the one that we saw at the store. She wore a plain skirt with a simple face. Her black woolen hair was pulled back in a pony tail, with no shiny tiara at all, not to mention the crystal shoes. She was nothing like Cinderella; she looked more like the ugly stepsister.
But I could see Mother watching me, waiting for my response. I knew Mum would be sad if she knew what I really felt. Hiding my disappointment, I shouted with delight, “She’s hard to resist! Thanks, Mum!” A relieved smiled appeared on my mother’s face. From time to time, I would take the “ugly stepsister” out and admire it. It is a reminder of my mother’s love. Her love would make me special and happy even if things did not always tick all the right boxes.
